Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Mara is a spirited, energetic, independent woman who seeks to experience life to its complete fullest. She can be hot tempered and very snarky under the worst of conditions but a good and sympathetic ear when needed quality that does do her service in her establishment, because honestly, everybody loves to share their problems with the barkeep.

She finds it very annoying when people discredit her due to her young age.  She might be an adult of the Blood, but she was still very young, and there were voices who couldn’t accept her success from almost nothing.  Longer, more established taverns in the capital resented her popularity and growing success, especially when it was known that members of the Queen’s court enjoyed spending their time and coin there.

She can be haughty, and she is a woman who knows what she wants and who she wants and will be damned if she doesn't get it when she wants it. Like most young female witches, she is very sexually liberated but still very selective on the men she agrees to take to bed. She has a very strong weakness for older men which sometimes can lend her trouble as most of the older men who come to her establishment have long committed lovers or wives. Mara will not take to bed with any man who has such ties.

Mara is playful and flirty, enjoying the lighter side of friendly customer service with all her customers, male or female.  She knows how to stay within the boundaries of play without leading on anyone she has no interest in pursuing or allowing to pursue her.  It’s part of her allure; younger men would always hope to wear her someday down or entice her to step over that line.
Above all Mara is driven, driven in her business, driven in her desire for companionship and pleasure.  She strives to rise above the mistakes of her youth that might have cost her stronger jewels and driven to wipe away the lingering reminders of her simple background and the obligations to her family that she ran so far away from.  She knows the difficulties of coming from little money, scraping by year after year and while she has no illusions of becoming gloriously wealthy, she hopes to become comfortable enough to someday think of raising a family of her own and having the resources to allow those children to aspire to whatever dreams they would want.

Likes:
  • Independence- Being free is almost a greater feeling than sex.  Being independent means you are the master of your path, choosing where to go and when to do it and no one can hold you back or keep you from stretching as far as you can reach.
  • Reading – Mara is obsessed with books.  If there is any luxury that she spends her hard earned extra coin on, it is the written word.  Books about everything imaginable.  She began looking for books to instruct her how to run the tavern that she had inherited, and then it was books on barkeeping where she developed her talent to mix drinks.  She moved onto financial investment books and began to start putting her money into developing projects that would give her back a good return.  When she isn’t reading to expand her mind, she reads to relax.
  • Financial security- She might not carry the darker jewels, but she knows that there is more than jewels that secure safety and security.  Money provides her the means to remain free and independent of anyone and anything - living her life as she wants.  Investment in her tavern and inn are key in her plans to secure her future of success.

    Dislikes:
  • Being cooped up- It might seem strange for a woman who spends most of her day inside, but Mara never sees herself as being inside.  There is always something to do, movement to be had, another new face or person to experience that she doesn’t ever feel stuck inside.
  • Young cocks - Is there anything as boring as young men in bed?  All cocksure and positive that they are the greatest gift between a woman’s legs.  Mara much prefers older men, mature men, men with the time and experience to truly show appreciation in the bedroom.
  • Aristo bitches - Uppity self entitled slackers, the whole lot of them, born with every pleasure and need satisfied from the moment of breathing and they believe that it makes them more than any other Blood.  She will serve them when they decide to “slum” into the Haven, but she gives them no more attention or special treatment than any other person, maybe just a touch less.

    Fears:

  • Her brother finding her and making her return home– The problem with having an older brother who sit so far in the abyss is that she knows if he ever decides to fetch her he wouldn't have to search very hard and she would not have the strength to impose his will. Like herself, he no longer wanted to be a part of the farm, but his Jewels and strong Court connections would make it no effort to find her if he wanted to.
  • Losing Rocky Haven- Rocky Haven is more than a name, it is her true haven.  A place that she has bled and sweat into to make her real home, the embodiment of her independence and her break away from her old life.
  • Being inconsequential - Being a farmer, one of thousands in her district, was practically an invisible life.  Nothing exciting, nothing unique.  Her former lover made her feel special; the tavern makes her feel important and recognizable by all who come into the establishment.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Fine Telekinetic Craft- She might not thank her father for much, but she does thank him for his insistence that her Craft training be more focused into harnessing her power into lifting and moving items.   He thought it would be a handy trait to have on the farm, but she has employed it quite usefully in the daily running of her tavern, perfecting it into an intricate dance to keep up with her quite busy establishment.
  • Reinforcement Craft- A handy bit of Craft, intended for strengthening overloaded carts and exhausted equipment, she has put it to use on her establishments doors, windows, chairs and whatever other items might require a little extra Craft to avoid breaking in a random bout of alcohol induced anger.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Shielding - She didn’t even know shielding was a thing until after she met her lover.  As part of her father’s opinion (or perhaps severe neglect in his training), she was never taught how to block others out physically.  Mentally she was aware of the protective barriers that kept others from her inner most thoughts but knows little to nothing on how to caste the protective shields around her body.
  • Power bolts - What does a sheltered little farm girl need to know about combat Craft, was what her father would always tell her.  Better to focus her attentions on using Craft to lift and move, to do the things she would need to help at the farm, and at her husband’s farm when she was grown.  So her education was severely lacking in any combative training.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Selene Durov, Blood Female (AP 138)
Father: Phillip Malley, Blood Male (AP 132)
    Siblings:
Geoffrey Durov,  Blood Opal - Red Warlord Prince (AP 158)
Joseph Durov, White - Rose Warlord (AP 170)

    History:
Mara was the middle child in a small family of five, small being a relative term to the other farming families in her district that would sometimes have upwards of six or seven children. Traditionally her family line was one of Blood males and females with only a fair few to come out with a Descent Jewel or very light Jewels. When her brother emerged from his birthright with the Blood Opal, it was a shock to everyone in the district. Their Queen immediately took an interest in bringing him to her Court to begin training for a future Life in the Courts. Mara had only been five when her older brother left, and the burden of the family began to fall on her. It would be another few years before her mother fall pregnant again,  having her little brother before the Healer pronounced she would have no more children.

From very early on Mara resented the pre-destined life of the farm that her parents instilled into her. She was the oldest,  and it was her job to inherit and carry on the family ownership and provide more little children to tend to the continuation of their family farm and their family line.  Mara had accepted this and had resigned herself to the life her family had planned for her until one day a stranger came to town, seeking refuge in a storm after his carriage had broken a wheel.  He was an older man, a Warlord wearing the Summer Sky and the tales that he spoke of the cities that he had seen,  even claiming having sat in the third circle of the territory Queen before she had been collared. Mara found him extremely fascinating and his attentions on her awoke a primal feeling of desire and lust herself. He remained in the village claiming to be making some business opportunities, and when her parents attentions were occupied, he would sneak out into the fields to meet her for stolen kisses, whispering promises of adventure, excitement, and travel.  She was only sixteen at the time and becoming romantically entangled with anyone at that time would have been unwise and far too reckless.  Of course, Mara threw herself into the idea without reservation.

He took her far from Northwood, and they fled east towards the Rockland Province.  When they arrived, she sought out a local Priestess to perform her Offering.  Knowing her age would cause complications, her lover procured her false documents that said she was 19 at the time and old enough to find a Priestess willing to perform her Offering as well as marry them.   She barely descended to the level of the Rose, a sign that she was far unprepared for the ritual.  She mourned the lacking of extra strength with a dismissive shrug.  Who needed power when you had wealth, that was true power, and her husband promised her a life of ease and luxury.

Her husband was 20 years older, worldly and exciting filing her head with promises of a comfortable life travelling the territories.    She moved with him to the capital of Rockland under the excuse of handling a few matters, like selling his inherited family tavern before moving onto his next assignment in Dharo as an ambassador.   Six months into the marriage, she discovered that he had been seducing some women around the city and was killed when he was caught cuckolding another man with his wife. She also learned that most of what he had told her had been a lie.  There was no money, no Court attachments and a great pile of debts that he had been intending to leave with her when he abandoned her and moved on to the next territory and next naive young thing.  The only truth he had left her with was the tavern, it had belonged to his family, and he had been attempting to sell it for seed money for his next venture.  As he had no living family, she inherited the tavern and after struggling for about a year began to turn a profit, enough to purchase the building in the adjacent lot and turned the tavern into a respectable inn as well.

    Character in Play:

It had been a quiet evening over all.  Middle of the week wasn’t quite as busy as the weekends, most of her patrons didn’t want the fuzz of a good drink to carry over into the early morning hours of work and as such there were only about two patrons curled up by the fireplace with drinks, having some chat about family or work or something.  She tried not to eavesdrop too obviously, picking up snippets as she moved around the room tidying or something.  She heard the soft chime of the door as it was opened and had the vague sense of more than one person entering, but as she had been bent over behind the bar putting away a few cases of ale, she couldn’t see who or how many.

“Be with you gents in a moment,” she called brightly as she huffed softly, using a touch of Tiger Eye Craft to shove the weighty container as far back into the recess as it would go before moving its twin in beside it.  Easier to do these things now while business was slow and give herself the luxury of sleeping in a little tomorrow.   Perhaps she might browse the new shop she had heard some talking about for a new dress.  The business had been booming, and since she added on the inn portion and took on tenants and rented out rooms, the extra coin had been a boost.

She heard impatient drumming above her head on the wooden countertop and held her snark, wiping her hands on her apron as she carefully sat back on her heels before rising to her feet, “How can I help…”  She paused her words as she looked at the handsome, grinning face of one of her best customers.  She rolled her eyes widely and tossed her head to pull some hair back behind her shoulders.

    “Jack, you’re an ass,”
she said softly enough that only he would hear her before turning to grab some glasses to fill his usual scotch request.   He gave her that sly cocky grin and held up two fingers, cocking his head back over his shoulder to gesture to his drinking partner.   She sidestepped him slightly to look back where he had been gesturing and stared.  Silver closely cropped hair with just a hint of dark shadow in the white scruff of beard.  Dressed in a neat jacket and dress shirt that was tailored enough to hint at the firm physique beneath.  Her eyes danced with interest as she looked him up and down.

“Oh….oh oh oh,” Jack chuckled softly, looking at her and back at his friend, “Oh girl, I have seen ravenous street dogs eying steaks with less enthusiasm.” He stopped, and a look passed over his face, a calculating look.  She stepped back out of view of the other man and leaned over the counter, grabbing Jack by his jacket and pulling him to within a hair’s width of her face.

“I’ll give you free drinks for a month if you tell me everything about that man right now Balton,” she hissed and watched his eyes widen a moment before shifting into something thoughtful and calculating.  “One month and free use of a room for two months.” She did the figures in her head, biting her lip as she thought about the loss of revenue as she looked back around him quickly.

“Alright you devil,” she hissed, “but you better deliver or I swear…” He reached over and patted her cheek, “Oh, I’ll deliver him right into your fragrantly ample bosom.”  She narrowed her eyes at him, “Keep your mind out of my bosom Jack, you’ve got more than enough other ones to think about.”  He just laughed and took the two tumblers in his hand, turning back to his drinking companion.   Mara watched him leave, but her eyes were only fixed on his friend as she set about finding reasons to be facing their direction, or make her way over in their area to tidy some chairs or wipe away invisible dirt.  As soon as the tumblers were empty, she sauntered over, making sure to lean close enough to give him a good view of the rise of her breasts above her corset as she picked up the tumblers.

“Well good evening gentlemen.  Jack, don’t you be rude now and forget your manners.  Introduce me to your handsome friend,” she purred warmly, sliding her hand against the silver man’s shoulder in a friendly manner with just enough heat to make it very clear she wanted to know quite a bit about him.

Jack just smiled, his face composed in a manner that showed none of his self serving interest in the whole venture, “Eirnan Connally, dear lady.  He’s just joined the Queen’s Court and is working as my second of command.”  Mara measured the name in her mind as she smiled warmly, “Prince Connolly, welcome to the Rocky Haven.  I hope to see you around quite often,” she said huskily.   “Let me get you, gentlemen, another round.”  She turned with a shift of her hip, walking away with enough sway that he would have to be blind not to be hypnotized by the sway of her skirts.
