Faction:
Appearance

Play By: Jessica Lucas
Distinguishing Features:
Silver has a multitude of scars from wounds in her youth that never healed properly. Her back is covered with proof of her many, many trips to the whipping post, and she has a smattering of other scars of varying depth over her hands, face, and torso. The most visible is one that divides her left eyebrow and presses into the cheek below it.

Personality

Personality:
When Silver was very young, she was orphaned and enslaved. A Healer held among other slaves waiting to be sold, she was constantly assaulted by their pains and yet unable to help them. This embittered her soul in a way that has echoed throughout her life. To protect herself from this feedback loop of pain, she instinctively tried to squelch the natural empathy that is so common to her caste, and taught herself to see those around her as opponents and competitors rather than supplicants that she might help. For a long time, the only victories she knew were the ones she took by force; the force of her will and her stubbornness were the only weapons she had. It's been several centuries now since she was that orphaned little slave, but the desperate will to survive at any cost and the willingness to put her own needs before others are learned traits that have never dimmed.

Silver's extensive travels through both Terreille and Kaeleer have given her a rather cosmopolitan outlook on life. For the most part, she is adaptable and not easily ruffled in the sense of being worried or fretful. Even when she does become nervous, it's important to her that she not show it. In fact, most emotional displays of a personal nature are things Silver would prefer to experience in private, if she must experience them at all. She learned early that not exploiting every available advantage could cost her, and in her adult life has no trouble holding back secrets, even from those to whom she is close, if she feels that doing so affords her a worthwhile advantage. She is less inclined to lie directly to those she's adopted as a true friend, but neither does she feel any obligation to volunteer information that doesn't directly concern them.

Despite this, Silver is fiercely loyal to the few people she has brought into her circle of friends. She doesn't have to get along with them, doesn't even have to like them, really. Once they pass whatever mysterious bar she sets for them to deem them worthy of friendship, she will use any means necessary to fight for them when needed. This doesn't mean she's always nice to them; Silver has a razor-sharp tongue and a dry wit, and those who have no sense of humor will suffer dearly for it around her. She does not coddle people, and though she would go to the ends of the realm to help a friend of hers that needs it, she fully expects them to be trying just as hard on their own behalf. Beneath all of that acerbic wit and intolerance for what she derides as 'bleeding hearts', she is very much still the Healer she was born to be. She is intensely passionate at her core. Deep down she aches to help people, even if years of experience and punishment have taught her that this is a weakness that ought to be suppressed in most cases.

Also, Silver might have a tiny problem with her temper. For the most part, she is congenial and even flirtatious in public situations, but it doesn't take much for that switch to flip the minute someone starts acting out of turn. She allows herself to mouth off and express her anger and annoyance freely, because the alternative - letting it build up until it forcibly vents - is usually far more dangerous. The up-side to this is that once she's expressed her anger, she's able to move on from it fairly quickly.

Likes:
  • Her "family". Though Silver is often friendly in a superficial sense, it's extremely rare that she allows someone in as a real friend. When it happens, she tends to adopt that person as a 'family' member, and attempts to convince them to travel with her, or keeps tabs on where they stay. She's intensely loyal to each of these people for different reasons, and craves the nearness of at least one of them on a daily basis.
  • Pain. Silver was abused when she was a slave. Maximinus in particular worked very hard at trying to break her will, most often using pain to attempt it. Every new level of pain Silver could bear without breaking became its own reward, and over the years this has twisted a bit. This isn't known by but a very few people, as it's a very personal, very vulnerable fetish for her.
  • Working. Silver has never liked being idle. Maybe it's simply the depth of her Jewels pressing energy into her at all hours, or maybe it's just that the past catches up to her more quickly when she's not moving. Whatever the reason, Silver needs to be engaged or working on something to be content.

Dislikes:
  • Slavery. Silver doesn't express many of her deeper emotions easily. Yet anyone who has spent any time around her will know how passionately opposed to slavery in all forms she is. Slave collars in particular draw a vehemently negative response from her, but any form of slavery grates her to the point where she feels compelled to try and intervene.
  • Bullies. Silver was the puny kid for a long time. She remembers what it was like. Just as she doesn't coddle people who need help, she doesn't spare her wrath when it comes to people who abuse the power they have over others.
  • Killing. As much as she insists that Mother Night made a mistake in giving her the Healer caste, at the end of the day she's still very much one. It's not a well-known fact, but Silver will go out of her way to avoid taking a life if there's any way around it. She doesn't like the way she can feel the life leave, and she has the odd sense that it stains her somehow, when she kills. Even Maximinus' death still shows up in her nightmares sometimes.

Fears:
  • Being collared again. Silver knows better than anyone that her agency and free will are only hers because Vespasian set her free. No one else would've taken the collar off of her. She is keenly aware of how little it would take for someone to separate her from her power once more, and that fear won't go away no matter how old she gets.
  • Winding up alone. Silver feels more at home in the short-lived Territories for some reason that she's never explained. As such, the friends she makes are often due to live just a fraction of her lifespan. Though she very much enjoys the people she has around her now (with a few exceptions) she fears that they will be the last true friends she makes and when they are gone she will be alone.
  • Having no legacy. If Silver was to die today, the world would not remember her. Those in her makeshift family would, but only until their deaths, and then there’d be nothing left of her in the world. Silver fears meeting her end before she’s figured out a way to leave something of herself behind to carry on after she’s gone. She started her life nameless and with nothing. She does not want to leave the same way.

Craft Strengths:
  • Defensive Shields. Even when she was bereft of her Jewels, the basic shields Silver could create were stronger than normal. It is an intuitive strength, no doubt fueled somehow by her innately defensive disposition. Now that she has both her Jewels and training, her shields are impressively unyielding.
  • Diagnosis. More often than not, Silver can extend her senses towards a person and determine their physical state without having to touch them. Injuries old and new, diseases, and other illnesses reveal themselves easily to her, and they always have. Sometimes this is a curse as much as it is a blessing, as on occasion she has to consciously extend effort to not sense such things and be distracted by it.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Death Spells She can snap someone's neck if she's brawling with them, or drop them off a cliff if there's one available. She doesn't LIKE doing those things, but if it's a matter of them or Silver, she can do it. Death spells, though, require too much of the power from within, and that power is ultimately sourced by a Healer who loathes taking lives. She has never been able to summon this kind of Craft.
  • Psychic Masking. Silver has a hard time hiding her psychic scent or that of others. She can suppress her own with concentrated effort, but only for a few minutes at a time. Even when she manages it, her efforts don’t stand up to scrutiny like a Gray (or even a Sapphire) mask should.

History:
If the woman had a name given to her at birth, she has never known it. By the time her mind was mature enough to begin storing long-term memories, she was known only as Healer. It was the most notable thing about her, and the Raejian slavers who owned her could not be bothered to name something they were only going to sell away in short order. Soon it became an ironic name, as the young girl was ill-tempered and stubborn, not at all the sweet little soft-hearted child her caste suggested she ought to have been. She changed hands a few times in those early years, as people were enamored with the idea of having a personal Healer who'd grow up loyal to them, and then discovered quickly that she was too intemperate and unruly to seem worth the effort of keeping. Her caste alone kept her alive in spite of her recalcitrance until she was eight. When she was allowed to undergo her Birthright ceremony and she emerged with the Sapphire, her value increased exponentially. Her owner at the time began to fear her, and fitted her with a slave collar. Such was Healer's stubbornness, however, that not even the threat of the collar's pain was enough to succeed in breaking her unruly spirit. Oh, it could hurt her terribly. It could put her on her back, or even make her black out from the pain. And perhaps for a little while afterward she would be less eager to disobey or cause trouble, but it never lasted terribly long. Unwilling to risk his life on that unpredictable temper, Healer's owner sold her, control ring and all.

Maximinus, the next owner that bought her, also thought himself capable of taming her, that he might raise a personal Healer for himself and his family. He took her home to Hayll and used the ring and collar liberally along with a number of other forms of punishment in an attempt to break her spirit. He reinforced one of the stalls in his stables and locked her in there for her "quarters", promising to treat her like an animal if she was going to behave as one. He never did break her, but he was determined to get his money's worth out of her, as he'd paid a good deal of coin for the young Healer with the Sapphire. Instead of allowing her to have her Jewel for the sake of training in her caste Craft (he didn't trust her to not try and kill him the instant she got her Sapphire into her hands - a legitimate fear), he put her in the training yard and had his sons teach her how to fight. She was a Healer who couldn't heal, but she had proven she could take a beating. He thought if she could be trained to fight decently, she'd make enough of a novelty in the Colosseum to earn him some of his money back. If she'd been a normal Healer it wouldn't have worked; no one would have wanted to be 'entertained' by seeing a young Healer get beaten up. If she could be taught to fight with weapons with as much ferocity as she fought to disobey, however, he was sure she'd surprise everyone.

And surprise people she did, starting with Maximinus.  The training gave Healer an outlet by which she could purge some of her anger and energy, and the plan had the unexpected side-effect of both tiring her physically and quelling some of her sizeable temper. She did not become entirely docile, but as she seemed to enjoy the training, the threat of taking it away from her introduced a bit of leverage that didn't require the application of pain. It didn't always work, but it was enough for Healer to eventually integrate into the household alongside the rest of the slaves rather than being treated like the near-animal she used to be seen as. Still denied her Jewel, she lived as one of the Jewel-less and performed mundane work for Maximinus' estate. Years passed in this fashion until Healer's body grew strong enough to manage adult-sized weapons. She grew to despise the golden collar she wore. It was fitted for a child's neck, not a grown woman's. It pressed so snugly against her neck that she had to turn it regularly to keep it from bonding with her flesh. Doing so was as likely as not to trigger its defenses, and more than once she accidentally knocked herself out that way. No one trusted her temperament enough to remove the collar long enough to replace it, though, and it didn't seem to affect her performance at all. When he thought her trained well enough, Maximinus took her to the Colosseum, and arranged a match for her.

It was a spectacular failure. Healer may have been able to best Maximinus' sons handily by then, but against a true gladiator she offered no real challenge. She was carted back to the estate, and the next time she awoke she was back in the stables. Maximinus was furious with her, convinced that all of the time and money spent had been wasted. Healer didn't care about making him mad, but it angered her that she'd lost so terribly. She obsessed over it, replaying the fight again and again in her head in an attempt to understand what had gone wrong. Maximinus took her back once more after she'd healed up, and Healer took the challenge far more seriously that time. It was a difficult fight, but Healer held her own that time. She came away bloody and staggering, but she won the match.

Slowly, she got better. She learned from other fighters besides Maximinus' sons, fighters who were more accustomed to facing real opponents in life and death situations. She did indeed become a novelty, the Healer who loved to fight like a gladiator. Eventually, Maximinus made his money back, and Healer grew to love the conquest of each fight as it drew near. She drew notoriety and interest, and it was only a matter of time before Maximinus began fielding offers to loan Healer out for uses other than combat. Healer was standing there the day he summoned her Sapphire to his hand to show it off to a prospective borrower, and in the blink of an eye, her life entirely changed.

Though her temper had never been entirely quelled, she had spent long enough being cooperative for the sake of being allowed to compete that Maximinus got overconfident. He turned a hair too much of his back towards her, and she'd jumped onto his back and snapped his neck before he knew what'd hit him. The potential borrower to whom he'd been speaking quickly vanished the Sapphire which rolled from Maximinus' hand, and assured Healer that if she killed him while he had it vanished, she'd never see it again. Healer had no idea whether he was telling the truth or not, but it seemed possible. She jumped him anyway, took him to the ground and began beating him to attempt to force him to return her Jewel to her. In her fury and passion, however, Healer failed to notice one of Maximinus' sons enter the room and take her control ring from his deceased father's hand. One moment she was making a bloody mess out of the face of the man beneath her, and the next moment the world exploded into pain, and then darkness.

Vespasian Thrax was a Warlord Prince of the Hundred Families, several millennia old and an owner of fighting slaves, as Maximinus had been. Healer had drawn his interest over the course of her fights, and he convinced the junior Maximinus to sell the murderous slave to him, rather than breaking or killing her for what she'd done. Vespasian spent the next couple of years slowly and carefully seducing her. Dark as her Birthright was, getting her through her Virgin Night without allowing her to break herself was a primary concern. Wise enough to anticipate that she would reject outright and obvious kindness, Vespasian worked a long game and eventually was successful. Healer succumbed to his seduction and not only surrendered her body but slowly came to surrender her heart as well. Vespasian, too, was pulled into sincere affection, and eventually removed the collar from around her neck. Its long presence and the tightness of its fit had worn a ring into her flesh that would not heal, but he did not require the threat of pain to dissuade her from hurting him or his people. She cared for them all in her own muted fashion, though Vespasian truly became the sun around which her world orbited. When she made her Offering to the Darkness, Healer gave her Descent Jewel to Vespasian for keeping when he convinced her that her lack of Craft training might cause her to harm someone she didn't intend to harm. He allowed her to begin Craft training at that point to help rectify the issue.

When it became clear that Healer missed the competition of fighting in the Colosseum, Vespasian permitted her to resume the sport. He paid for better combat trainers than she'd ever had before, but was rewarded in winnings made as her skill improved. If it hadn't been for the fact that Vespasian was still a slave owner, that period of time would've been near to idyllic for Healer. Vespasian had a wife and a family, but Healer didn't care. She knew he cared for her, and she spent the better part of two centuries flourishing under his hand. He treated his slaves well and it was easy for Healer to live among them, working with both the guards and the animals. Sometimes it still got to her, that Vespasian might love her but he also owned her the way he owned the other slaves. How could she think fondly of someone who held people against their will, no matter how soft their beds? She eventually confronted him about it, and after some consideration, Vespasian agreed that he would release his slaves if Healer would consent to stay with him indefinitely. As she loved him by then anyway she consented, and for a time she was happy.

When the Purge swept across the realms, it was to Healer that Vespasian went. She was known to him as Silver by then, a name he'd taken to calling her after an anecdote involving her aversion to anything gold (it reminded her of the hated collar she'd worn for so long). He shielded her against the storm, though it tore through his Jewels one at a time. Though they both technically survived the onslaught, when it was over Vespasian was fully broken and not long for the world. Silver held him as he passed, weeping against his insistence that she take what she wanted from his vault and go on to enjoy the long life ahead of her. Her Jewels were there, along with a bit of wealth and enough surprisingly sentimental trinkets to make Silver fall apart all over again. For two hundred years he'd dominated her life, and the prospect of going a day further with him gone suddenly seemed like more than she could bear.

But Silver was a fighter, and she eventually found the strength to pick herself up and move on. He had been wise in telling her to take the things he'd left for her and leave. The pieces of his family that survived the Purge would not have believed a slave's assertion that her master had freed her with his dying breath, and would have stopped her if she'd waited for them to find her. All of Hayll reminded her of Vespasian, so she left. She traveled through Terreille for a time, learning her Craft at last through an assortment of teachers, and experiencing life as a free woman for the first time. When nowhere quite felt like home, she ventured through the Dark Gate into Kaeleer. She was assigned to a Dhemlanese court in the service fair, though her court service was a laughable affair. She had no skills whatsoever in that particular arena, and it seemed like the entirety of the time she spent there was centered around trying to learn how to be a civil member of a court. When her contract was over she fled with haste, and bounced around Kaeleer for some time before finally settling in Little Terreille alongside a few friends she'd managed to make in her travels.

Character in Play:
“Silver, no.”

The woman’s Dharoan accent made everything she said sound more authoritative, more educated and crisp. More than her accent, her wealth of experience lent a great deal of confidence to her words. The Healer didn’t care

“Silver yes,” she countered, moving towards the door in spite of the Dharoan’s advice. The other witch slipped ahead of her and smoothly interposed herself between the Healer and the door.

“Might I remind you what happened the last time you ignored my advice on a similar matter?” the woman intoned, attempting to appeal to the hard-headed Healer’s sense of practicality. There were not always avenues available to their little gang that involved diplomacy rather than head-smashing, and the Duchess preferred to make use of them when possible. Unfortunately, the Gray Healer before her far preferred less delicate means of negotiation.

“Might I remind you what happened to the last person who wouldn’t get out of my way?” Silver snapped, though both of the women knew there was very little chance she’d actually lay hands on her gang-mate.

“You can go out there and pummel the Duke all you like, but it would take a mere thought for him to vanish that ring, and then who has the upper hand? Hm? Who is in control of the situation at that point?”

Silver shifted her gaze away, jaw tight in annoyance, and sighed out a growling noise to match. The Duchess simply waited in pointed silence until Silver finally relented.

“He is,” she admitted, sullenly.

“And is that the preferred outcome?”

No.”

“No. Agreed. So are we going to pummel, or are we going to swallow our pride and allow diplomacy to do its work?”

Silver slid her eyes back to the Duchess, her expression flat and unamused. For a long moment the women held eyes, one just as stubborn as the other. Finally, Silver tsked and sighed and turned away.

Fine. But if he puts his hands on Lowell again, I’m pummeling the fuck out of him, ring or no ring.”

The other witch straightened her jacket and adjusted her cuffs. “If he puts his hands on Lowell again, I may well assist you,” she said, with a mild smirk. The two shared a knowing look, and then Silver snorted softly.

“Alright, then. Let’s go be diplomats.”
