Personality
Personality:
Jade Ramsey is very accustomed to getting what she wants. The apple of her father's eye, she was spoiled rotten as a child, albeit in as elegant a way as possible. She was never the sort to throw tantrums to get what she wanted, but sulking and other mundane emotional manipulation was well within her wheelhouse even at a young age. Grown now, those tactics have only been refined and made more subtle. Jade is less concerned with what's right and what's wrong, and more concerned with what's right for her and for those she considers hers. She has a hard time, in fact, drawing lines between abject morality and taking care of the people who matter to her.

She's a passionate woman, though she has little time for conventional notions of love and romance. She's a businesswoman at heart, born and bred, and while she appreciates the company of others in all available degrees, she's unwilling to allow herself to be slowed down by attachments that try to hang on too closely. The exceptions to this are her two Bonded males, Ilir and Jensen, in whom she has no reservations about investing as much of her time and affection as they wish. Keeping them happy feels like part of her life's calling, and she can be uncharacteristically tender with each of those two on occasion. To the rest of the world she's polite but shrewd, reasonable yet demanding all the same.  She drives hard bargains and isn't ashamed to rely on intimidation if that's what it takes to seal a deal. Everything and everyone around her is a potential tool to be used to get ahead.

Thanks to the tutelage of her father, however, Jade is aware enough of how people work to understand that well-kept tools will always be easier to use than neglected ones. She treats her people very well, whether they're her closest confidants or the gardener at the family estate. The flip-side of this awareness of her people is a tendency towards jealousy. In her outer circles it's something she notices but can ignore, but it gets gradually more powerful the closer in towards her inner circle one goes. The dance between Jade and the two Warlord Princes bound to her is a delicate one, one that has spiraled into violence more than once.

Likes:
  • Tidiness. Whether talking about her personal appearance, the landscaping of her Keep, or the way her business affairs are conducted, the love of neatness is a common theme in Jade's world. A well-oiled machine runs best, and Jade is loath to accept anything less.
  • Her Family. Some women might be overwhelmed or uncomfortable with such a large family, especially one that's so involved in her daily affairs. Jade's family is one of the most beloved things in her life, and she doesn't mind one whit that the means they've used to establish themselves so strongly aren't entirely wholesome.
  • Her youth. Jade has energy for daaaayyys. While she honors tradition for the most part, she's not imprisoned by it. She is willing to try new things and take risky bets, and she attributes this bravado to her youth because she notices the absence of these traits most commonly in the elders of her family.

Dislikes:
  • Her Inexperience. Jade knows enough to know there's a lot she doesn't know. As much as she enjoys her youth, she is simultaneously impatient for the part of her life where people will stop viewing her through the lens of her age. She's anxious to be the experienced, savvy Queen that Bethany was for her.
  • Odelle's Court. If she's ever met Odelle personally, she doesn't remember it. Still, this was the woman who had the gall to take up Bethany's seat before it was even cold. Jade's worry and frustration over being unable to find Bethany has tempted her to believe the worst: that Odelle has had Bethany removed in order to take her throne.
  • Amerys Tiernan's rule. This little upstart is no older than Jade herself is, and she's running the Territory. If Amerys was still skipping around Braedon on the Strand, Jade wouldn't have a problem with her. If there's going to be a 22 year old running things, however, Jade's pretty convinced it should be her.

Fears:
  • Josiah. Jade is convinced that Josiah was involved in their father's death. She successfully sent him away without revealing the truth to the majority of the family, but she quietly fears that Josiah is secretly plotting a coup to take the Authority from her. If that day comes, she's terrified that she's going to have to choose between keeping her father's legacy in her hands, and killing his son.
  • Bethany's death. Right now, Bethany Smithers is simply missing. Every day that passes chips away at the hope that she's not dead. Jade is clinging to the hope that she lives, Bethany was Jade's closest advisor in court matters, and as a woman in power. She misses Bethany's support and guiding hand daily, and the thought of continuing for the rest of her life without it makes her deeply anxious.
  • Failing to rise. Jade took the reins of her family from her brother by force. While at the time she was convinced that she would manage it better than Josiah anyway, the reality of running the Authority and a District Court has truly challenged her. The thought that she might make missteps that would prevent the family from flourishing under her rule literally keeps her up at night.

Craft Strengths:
  • Compulsions. A skill she learned from Bethany, Jade is extremely subtle in her use of Compulsion spells. She has trained to make the movement of power subtle enough that even other Red Jeweled Blood have a hard time picking up on it.
  • Telekinesis. Jade has been honing this Craft since she was a child, playing by herself with her toys while her father worked. She now controls her telekinetic effects so finely that she can make it feel as though she's touching someone from across the room.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Defensive Shielding. Jade has always been looked after, first by her father, then her extended family, and now by her court and the Port Authority. That is convenient, because her ability to defend herself via Craft is rubbish. Her shields can keep the rain off of her head, but any concentrated force will shatter them.
  • Jewel Management. Jade's Jewels, once depleted, take an inordinately long bit of time to refill. No matter how much she eats, rests, or prays in a given period of time, it takes her at least twice as long as normal to recover the power she's expended.

History:
A few generations back, a woman named Josie Ramsey retired from her position as Admiral of the Little Terreillian Port Authority, and it so happened that she had the great pride and pleasure of being able to watch her own son Oster take up the position of Admiral after her. While it couldn’t be said that Josie was an entirely good woman, she was a very good Admiral, and she raised up her son to hold the same exacting standards for work done under his name as those that had earned Josie renown before him. The Ramseys were a large but very tightly knit family, and Oster relied heavily on the advice of his more-experienced mother when considering how to deal with the Port Authority’s more troublesome quandaries. The Ramseys’ reputation for doing well in positions of authority spread easily, and whenever nieces or cousins or brothers came of age and began looking for work, signing onto the Port Authority became a common way for them to step out into the world. No one complained, really. The Ramseys were a hard-working lot, and the family name became almost synonymous with the Port Authority over the years.

Fast forward a couple of generations, and the Ramsey name was still linked tightly with the Port Authority. Creston Ramsey was at its head, and between his family, extended family, and in-laws, a solid half of the working Port Authority was related to him somehow. The other half was sworn to loyalty, as at some point service to the Port Authority became less about serving Little Terreille, and more about serving the Ramsey family. It became less about ensuring the safe conveyance of goods in and out of Little Terreille’s ports, and more about the conveyance of money into Ramsey pockets. Applications to join the Port Authority were denied unless the applicant was vetted and found suitable – with the primary deciding factor being whether they could be convinced to swear fealty to the Admiral. Those on the inside were treated well, and it became an unspoken rule that it was near impossible to be fired from the Port Authority. Those who truly caused problems disappeared eventually, but by the time Creston was in control, the need for such incidences was impressively low. Creston Ramsey was practically a king of his own little empire, and because tariffs and taxes were already built into port activities, few people on the outside of the PA had any idea.

...until they crossed the wrong person, that is. Ramseys stuck together, and that went doubly so when they were disrespected or harmed by an outsider. The Port Authority did still see to the security of the docks in Little Terreille, and random and unorganized crime was successfully swept out of the PA’s domain. Harsh penalties befell any who dared interfere with Ramsey business, whether they knew that’s what they were doing or not.

Despite how self-contained the Port Authority felt to those inside, it was technically still under the purview of the Territory Court, with the Admiral reporting directly to the Master of the Guard. Whether the Territory Court knew of how Creston and his family had turned the Port Authority into a mafia-style organization was anyone’s guess. Regardless of how sincere or token Creston’s visits to the Territory Court were, he made them regularly, as would look proper on the paperwork.

Jade was born in 170 AP, seven years after her brother Josiah. She was doted on from birth, as no one could recall the last time a Queen had been born to the Ramsey line. Creston in particular took great pride in his daughter, and often conducted business with her in his arms or on his knee. A reserved but precocious child, Jade absorbed more than anyone realized from her years spent quietly playing with her dolls under her father's desk, or in the corner of whatever room in which he was meeting his peers.

The Ramseys had every intention of seeing their darling on a throne in Little Terreille, and on the throne, in fact, in time. When Jade came away from her Offering with the Blood Opal, the matter seemed sealed to Creston. He began seeing that Jade spent time with Bethany Smithers, the Ramsey-friendly Queen who ran Thorton District, wherein the Ramsey clan was concentrated. Lady Bethany was a strong and ambitious woman, and Jade learned much under her tutelage. Though etiquette, Protocol, and the logistics of ruling were lessons taken to with sobriety and sincerity, Jade considers them perhaps the least important of the things Bethany taught her. They lived in Little Terreille, after all, where business reigned supreme. Not even Jade's very powerful family would make her a good Queen, even if their influence might help keep her in power. Bethany lit a fire in Jade to deserve the throne on which she'd eventually sit.

It had become tradition for the Admiral of the Port Authority to retire while still in good health, while bestowing the mantle of Admiral to his eldest child, provided they were fit to serve. It was expected that Jade's older brother Josiah would take the role when Creston retired, but things didn't go as planned. Creston died unexpectedly from what seemed to be an undiagnosed health issue in 189 AP. Simultaneously, Jade and Josiah had a very well-known falling out, after which Josiah disappeared from public life. Jade made her Offering to the Darkness slightly earlier than planned, and after descending to the Red, she took over control of the Port Authority. She did this quietly, however, and those outside of the Port Authority's highest positions assume that it is still Josiah at the head of the organization. The family grieved the loss of its patriarch, and business continued.

When Hyster Magdalen disappeared in 191 AP and Bethany charged the vacant Province seat to take it for herself, she appointed Jade to the Thorton seat she was leaving behind. Only two years off of her Offering at that point, Jade was very young to be handed such a thing, but with the combination of her frightening Jewels and the influence of Bethany and the Ramsey family, very few complaints were heard. It was a challenge unlike anything Jade had ever attempted, keeping abreast of not only a District court, but also a very complex organization that was incredibly important to her. The abundance of work was one of the ways she dealt with the loss of her father, as she knew managing both into continued success would have made him proud.

Jade was focused enough on managing her affairs that when Bethany mysteriously disappeared not long after, she faltered. Distracted by the sudden loss of a crucial arm of support, Jade did not move quickly enough, and another Queen swept into Bethany's newly-vacated seat. It's a temporary arrangement, Jade is certain. Let the usurper enjoy her view of Rockland for the moment, while Jade and her people find out what happened to Bethany. Soon, the mystery around Bethany's whereabouts will be solved, and then it will be time for Jade to turn her sights to the Province throne… or higher.

Character in Play:
"They're ready," Bethany said.

Jade opened her eyes, and once more focused on the metallic glint of her father's badge, nestled in her palms. He'd worn it for a long time, but not for as many years as he should have. His tenure had been cut short, and while most of Rockland thought it natural causes that had relieved Creston Ramsey of duty, Jade was certain it was a murder most foul. It made it a bittersweet moment to be sitting there, sequestered in her rooms while she'd prepared for the coming ceremony. Jade looked up from her hands, and met the eyes of Bethany, across the room. The elder Queen was watching the younger one thoughtfully, and then a sad little smile slipped across her lips.

"He'd be proud of you," Bethany said. Jade smiled and looked back to the badge.

"I miss him," she said, and her own voice sounded foreign and weak to her. Like a child's voice. She hated it, and she frowned and stood up. The crystals that decorated her dress tinkled softly as she moved to the mirror and looked at herself one last time. She didn't look like the child she'd heard in that voice. She looked very much grown, she thought, while Bethany continued to speak.

"As you should. As you will for some time yet. There is nothing to do but shoulder that feeling, and carry it with you. In time it will lessen. Until then, it's a burden that will motivate you to do well. You have much to prove, Jade. Starting tonight."

Jade drew a deep breath and vanished the badge. She turned to look at Bethany, and nodded once with more confidence than she truly felt. The pair of them turned then, and walked out of Jade's rooms and towards the parlor, where the young Queen would accept the Admiralty of the Port Authority, and with it the reins of the Ramsey family future.
