Appearance

Play By: Nicholas Hoult
Distinguishing Features: Dale is about 6'4", broad-shouldered, and narrow everywhere else. His legs and arms seem almost a bit too long for the rest of his body and though they hold only a moderate amount of muscle he's usually able to do well enough in a brawl just by flailing the heavy limbs about in a semi-coordinated manner because when they hit something they hit hard.

Personality

Personality:

While Dale is an intelligent and keenly observant man, he has little insight into people and is, in a word or two, incredibly awkward. His intentions are usually right, but he has trouble deciphering a person's emotions, thought process, or motivations on his own. As such, his reactions to people are often unexpected and/or inappropriate to the situation. This is something that was much worse when he was a child, before his mothers took the time to work with him on social interaction, but though he is older and much more practiced now in his awareness he is still unnatural and awkward when it comes with dealing with and interacting with people in just about any situation.

Aware that his limited instincts are often incorrect or at least incomplete in their suppositions when it comes to people and how to react to and interact with them, Dale often attempts to instead base his actions on what the people around him would do. He chooses in his head whom he believes the best person to emulate in a given situation would be, then tries to think of what they would do. Sometimes he is correct, and sometimes he isn't, but he does try. If there is someone he knows and is very familiar with right there with him, he will usually take his cues from them on how to react.

That he doesn't always understand people doesn't mean he doesn't care about them, though. On the contrary, Dale has a very big, warm heart. He cares deeply for the people around him, and typically chooses to believe the best in people - sometimes even beyond being disproven by fact and reason if they are someone he is close to. Dale tends to take an "Us" or "Them" mentality - if you are one of "Us", you are a good guy. If you are one of "Them" you are a bad guy. It's very hard for his mind to accept a switch in sides, especially if you start out as a very close "Us" - like his family or the rest of the Unchained.

Caring for people and showing it appropriately are two very different things, however. Never quite sure the best way to express things, Dale will usually show affection in random, strange gestures that others may or may not fully recognize for what they are. As a minor example - if he thinks you are cold he will find you very warm socks and then put them where he thinks you are most likely to find them. Perhaps in your bag, or in your coffee mug in the cupboard.

Dale also notably attacks problems with a single-minded intensity that borders on obsession. He is not easily frustrated or dissuaded, and is content with repetition as long as he does not have a better way to go about his task. It is this fierce dedication that really drives his ability to find some of the things that he is able to find - he just never gives up. It is also what enabled him to spend hours a day, every single day, for almost two years asking every single person he could if they had seen his mothers. He still will spend hours at a time searching - but he has found an alternative method in extensively questioning any adversaries the Unchained detains in their ventures, as it has been logically proposed to him that bad guys will have a better chance having seen or heard something about his mothers than the average layperson who has never left the six mile community they were born and raised in.

Likes:
  • 1 - Cooking. One of the things he loves most about cooking - and baking in particular - is the measurements. He always knows what to do. He can follow the recipe the same way every single time and every single time he will get the same, predictable, tasty result. People are not like this, and he does not like or understand that. But cooking will always give you expected (delicious) results that then produce more (usually predictable) results when given to people. Cooking is soothing for him, and also helps him feel like he's interacting with people on a normal level - especially those he cares about.
  • 2 - Finding things. Perhaps it's the thrill of things coming together or a substitute for not being able to find his mothers after almost ten years of looking, but seeking out odd objects or resources has grown beyond just a profession or a hobby to him - it's almost an obsession. Connecting the dots, hunting down a source, finding that item and bringing it to whomever was looking for it sates this need for order inside him that nothing else can quite tend to. A place for everything, and everything in it's place - and he's the one to put it there. It makes him feel important, and necessary, gives him a purpose and a role in a world that he otherwise struggles heavily to understand and assimilate within.
  • 3 - Feeling accepted. One of the best things about being a part of a group like his gang is that he always has this feeling of being accepted (whether he actually is by the individual members or not). He is needed. He is a part of a working machine. He is an ingredient that contributes to their recipe. It's a very satisfying and steadying feeling, and it's been one of the only things that has kept him so stably on his feet in the years since his mothers disappeared. He always relied on his mothers and his best friend Balen to give him a baseline for how to interact with people - and in the time before he met Silver he lost that and was seriously floundering. Now, with the Unchained... he has a purpose, he has a place.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Being underestimated. Due to his social ineptitude, he was often treated as if he were not only less than intelligent but completely inept in all walks of life, not just pleasantries. He would be called cruel names and targeted by children and adults just because he was different. He hates being judged on the rest of his abilities just on his lacking in one area, and also cannot stand when others are treated similarly.
  • 2 - Bullies. Dale cannot stand people who make others a target of cruelty just because they can. The reason the bullies have come up with doesn't matter to him - only that they're making another person feel small and unwelcome and less somehow. Both as someone who has been targeted and who has seen so many others been subjected to such things over the years, he will react instantly when he recognizes someone taking advantage of or belittling someone else. At the very least he will say something, and it is not uncommon (especially in recent years) for him to intervene more physically in any situation he witnesses.
  • 3 - Alcohol. Beyond the taste, which he isn't particularly fond of anyway, Dale does not like anything that lowers his reasoning skills. He doesn't like feeling like he isn't in control of what he's doing, and it makes him nervous to think that he may say or do something wrong that could have been avoided if he'd had his wits around him. He has no problem with other people drinking - and in fact quite enjoys watching others get drunk and behave foolishly.
Fears:
  • 1 - Never finding his moms; or finding out they're dead. It's been almost ten years since his moms were taken, but Dale has not let go of the surety that one day he will find them and bring them home safe and sound where they will be happy and together again. Any suggestion that his moms are dead or that something irreparably horrible has happened to them is usually either met with a cold shoulder or a violent outburst. He cannot handle the idea of that reality.
  • 2 - Being unable to help his friends. He has a purpose with his friends - and that is what the Unchained are to him, whether they see him that way or not. They are his friends, and he loves them and he trusts them because they are a group, a unit. They depend on one another. The idea of being unable to help them when they need him the most fills him with a tight and dreadful anxiety, harkening back to the notion that he could do nothing to help his moms -- and the creeping oily feeling that he never will.
  • 3 - Very deep water. Dale is not a very good swimmer, and the idea that miles below his struggling feet are living things never seen by man truly chills him. Once as an adolescent he fell overboard during a family vacation out to a small island where they had been fishing just out past the reef. He was not in the water for very long, but he swore that he felt something very large and very slimy brush against his feet and try to wind around his ankle as he flailed and cried out for help. Ever since, whenever he's had no choice but to get in a boat he's stayed firmly in the middle of the craft, worn a life-vest, and taken any other possible protection available.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Psychic Communication. Perhaps because he has always been naturally adept at multitasking and compartmentalizing his thoughts, he is excellent in expanded psychic communication. He is able to maintain several lines of communication at once without getting confused or dropping the connection, and is also able to host expansive communal psychic threads.
  • 2 - Sensing Emotions. Dale cannot identify emotions on his own. He can't look at someone and just intuitively understand "oh, they're upset". From the beginning, his mothers recognized this ineptitude and set out to give him the tools to compensate for it, teaching him how to sense others emotional state. When he thinks to and remembers to do this, he is quite proficient at detecting their emotions. That he can figure out what they're truly feeling doesn't help him understand why they are feeling that way, however, and he still struggles and fumbles interacting appropriately with them, especially since once he senses he will then be responding to an emotion that other person may very well be trying to hide or ignore, a concept which he doesn't really understand.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1- Calming Rage. Despite being a Warlord with a fairly good grasp of Craft in general, Dale lacks the ability to calm the rage of just about anyone, especially not the volatile Warlord Princes. Any attempt at this particular craft has a high likelihood of backfiring completely, either accidentally pissing the person off even more, or potentially even infecting Dale with the rage himself.
  • 2 - Healing. One of the other areas that he just isn't particularly apt in. Of course he isn't a Healer, but he struggles with even the basic healing that most people can manage such as sealing a small wound or creating easy brews against pain and discomfort. The former doesn't bother him so much, as with small wounds he's able enough to wrap and tend to them without craft - but he doesn't understand how he is able to succeed in cooking but cannot make a simple healing brew. In his mind they should be much the same.

History:

Delarius never knew his birth parents, who they were or what happened to them. He didn't know if they were alive and didn't want him or if they'd died tragically when he was just a baby. He spent the first seven years of his life bouncing between group homes that typically housed anywhere between eight to fifteen other kids at a time.

Dale was small as a child, scrawny, and had trouble fitting in, which often made him a target of cruel pranks from the other kids. His complete lack of natural ability in social skills also made him stand out to the adults as well. Many found him unsettling and a nuisance. They didn't know how to handle or support him, and even those who were genuine in their desire to help any child that crossed their threshold were at a complete loss at what to do with him. Wounded, antisocial children they knew what to do with - but Dale wasn't exactly antisocial. It wasn't that he avoided other children or was afraid of them or the adults. Even when other kids were mean to him, or adults abused or talked down to him, he never shied away from them after. Outside of the very moment it was happening, he seemed oblivious to their disdain.

His attempts at conversation or socializing ranged from awkward and ill-timed to completely inappropriate, and he was a wild card in his reactions to just about anything. Something that would make a normal child excited or happy might scare him or make him cry. Sometimes he'd get extremely angry and even violent at the most minuscule slight. Sometimes when one of the other kids was trying to hurt him or make fun of him, he'd laugh and attempt to give them a hug.

When he was seven years old he was adopted by Leona and Galena Winton, a young couple with too much love to keep just between the two of them. They looked at Dale and they didn't see a freakishly awkward child who maybe had something wrong with him to where he couldn't interact well with others. They saw a child - one who desperately needed love, acceptance, and guidance. They took him in, they were patient with him, and they taught him everything they could. They helped him grow, helped him learn more about people and how to interact with them. They guided him, and they loved him.

Dale's life from age seven to nineteen was quite wonderful. He struggled with learning people but he never felt unloved. Even when he would err greatly, his moms would take the time to explain to him where he had gone wrong, why it was wrong, and what the better reaction would have been. He genuinely wanted to do better, to fit in, to be good - and so he worked at it.

When the Warlord was nineteen, his mother Galena was offered a scholarship to study at a prestigious university in Dhemlan for a year. The family owned a small tavern where Leona tended bar and Galena ran the house when she wasn't tending her Priestess duties at the local Sanctuary, and while they were in no way stricken by poverty they also weren't extraordinarily wealthy either. This was an amazing opportunity, and they all agreed as a family that Galena would be quite foolish to pass it up. So she accepted the scholarship and set out for Dhemlan, leaving the tavern in the care of her wife and son.

Except... once she left her family did not hear from her again. After two weeks hearing absolutely nothing from her wife, Leona took off for Dhemlan herself - intending to drag her out of the library where she had likely holed herself up in and remind her quite passionately about the importance of sending letters to your family to make sure they knew you were alright.

A week passed, and then another. Leona did not come back either, nor did any sort of letter arrive. Dale grew worried and left the tavern under the charge of one of his only real friends, Balen, to go after them. He arrived in Dhemlan and went straight to the university admissions office only to discover that not only had his mother Galena never arrived at the university but the scholarship she had been offered never existed. The person she had been in contact with throughout the application process... didn't exist - or at least if they did they certainly didn't work for the university. Leona had been there, and when the administrator told her the same thing he was telling Dale, the Black Widow had gone off. He didn't know where she was now.

Dale... had no idea what to do. So he did the only thing he could think of - he started asking. Tirelessly, he asked every single person he came across if they had seen either of his mothers. He returned home to the tavern only to get pictures and print flyers. He did this not for days, not for weeks, not for months, but for almost two years. Every single day, every single person that he saw with a dogged single-minded dedication that never tired, never waned.

At first he lived off of a stipend sent to him by Balen from the tavern, the Warlord Prince having no idea what else to do after repeated attempts to get his friend to come home failed. Along the way, however, Dale eventually began to develop connections - especially in the city around the university. While he wandered around Dhemlan in his search, at least every couple of months he would work his way back to that initial area and try again - to see if they had come back, or if anything similar was happening again. He would do odd jobs here and there, or stay at a particular inn and do their books for room and board. Dale discovered that - with the frustrating exception of his mothers - he was quite proficient in finding things. Possibly because his mind worked in a different enough way that where he chose to look - although usually not conventional - was precisely where he needed to in order to find whatever it was he was looking for. Maybe his mind connected dots that no one else could see, a process gained for the trade of his social skills - or maybe he was just very lucky. Either way, acquisitions became how he started to make both money and a bit of a name for himself.

He was the guy that was looking for his moms. And he was the guy that could find you... whatever you were looking for.

It was through this "finding" business that he met Silver. She had been looking for something and he had found it for her. What it was was rather irrelevant, because it wasn't really what she asked him to find that stroked his interest. It was what she'd been going to do with it. It was a woman's shelter - or at least it looked like one. In actuality, when women went there to hide from their abusers the facility cared for them for a few days, promised to help them get back on their feet again - then took everything they had and even sold them out to their abusers.

Dale had been curious, and he was good at lurking... so he lurked. He followed Silver, and in an impulsive moment jumped in and joined in the fray when Silver and her gang attacked the criminals behind the whole operation.

It occurred to him, in a dark moment after the dust had settled, that if his mothers were someplace bad, if they were in real trouble and not just "missing"... he wanted people who would help them. He wanted this. And just like that, Dale decided that he was going to go with them. He was a part of the group now.

He was the only one who thought this way. Silver outright told him to go home. To go back to finding lost pocketwatches or whatever it was he was looking for. Unaffected, Dale said he needed to be with them. That he could be useful. He could get them what they needed - and he could keep them connected when so many different things were happening at once. AND he could hit things. Granted, he wasn't spectacularly skilled at hitting things, but he wasn't bad at it either.

Still she said no, and the gang left.

Dale found them. Then he found them again. And again. And again. He tagged along until, eventually, he was accepted into the group. For seven years, he's been with Silver and the Unchained. He never stops looking for his mothers, and it's almost always the first thing out if his mouth when he meets someone new. Sometimes he thinks he has a clue and he'll disappear for a few weeks, but he always finds them again - broodily silent and empty-handed on his return.

At least with the Unchained he has a purpose, he's moving forward and accomplishing something. he's doing good, which is something he knows his moms would want him to do... and doing that is about as close to them as he can ever get.

Character in Play:

"I need you to find something."

Dale continued to carefully portion out the flour, holding the full measuring up over the tin, bending so that he could be at eye level with the rim of the cup without lifting it too far away from the tin as he gently tapped the dull end of a knife across it and scraped off the excess.

"I said I--"

"You need me to find something. Mhm. What is it?" His voice came out clipped and rather rude, but any offense given wasn't intended despite her being unnecessarily impatient. He'd heard the girl the first time, of course he had. He did not have a hearing impairment, and the girl was standing close enough that he'd require one to have not heard her words. Still, apparently logic had escaped her and he would try to keep that in mind. Perhaps what she was looking for was so important her mind had been addled.

"It's... um... do.. do I have to tell you?"

Dale paused, and considered this questions seriously. "Well, that depends. What else can you tell me?" For the first time since she'd entered the kitchen he looked over at her, standing up to his full towering six foot four to do so. The girl was small - maybe five or six inches over five feet. She was also fiddling with her blouse and there was a lot of color in her cheeks, like she'd just been running a long time.

He frowned at her. "Do you need water?" If she got dehydrated, she might faint.

The girl looked surprised, then very confused. "Oh n-no. No I'm okay." Her lips turned up in a small smile that Dale couldn't help but think looked like it wasn't quite sure of the right shape. Like maybe she wasn't sure about smiling. Figuring it was better to be safe than have an unconscious girl on the floor, he crossed to the cupboard and pulled down a tall glass, filling it with cool water from the tap. Not truly cold, but cool. He set the glass decisively in front of her and tried to mimic the look his mother always gave one of her patients, his expression drawing into a stern frown as he nodded at the glass and narrowed his eyes at her.

Looking confused an a bit worried, the girl picked up the glass and took a sip before clearing her throat. "Alright, anyway, um... I can tell you when and where it was.. um.. misplaced. And, um, the general shape and size..."

Dale considered this, then nodded. "That'll work." Then he turned around and went back to making his cake.
