Distinguishing Features:

Hrodi has blonde hair and blue eyes, and a lighter complexion than the average Little Terreille native because he is of Glacian descent, although he was born in Little Terreille.

Personality

Personality:

Hrodi tends to be standoffish and grumpy. He is an introvert in the sense that people mentally and emotionally exhaust him, sometimes to the point where he avoids everyone for as long as possible. There are a few exceptions to this, such as his cousin, Lucy, as well as his mother. Separate from being an introvert, sometimes Hrodi is just plain rude with what he says or how he says it. He likes to keep an emotional distance from most people, and this plays into it.

He is dependable: since he doesn't commit himself to much, if he says he will do something, he will follow through on it, even if it takes him a while to do so. Hrodi likes to do one thing at a time and finish that task before starting a new one, although he forces himself to be flexible on this when working with a group. It still makes him uncomfortable and he has to work to keep his mind on the current task if it was not the first one he started.

The violent passion of a Warlord Prince as dark as himself is something Hrodi has learned to control out of necessity. Being out to sea so often means that he cannot have explosions of emotion because they would be disastrous for everyone involved as well as those who were not involved. It was something he started learning very young. He is possessive of those he considers to be ‘his,’ but there are not many who fall into this category because he does his best to remain distant.

Hrodi’s control is not absolute. This shows, for example, through in the grouchiness he displays in general, in how adamant he is about pursuing his ideals to the point of sometimes arguing about them with others, and in how domineering he can be when acting as an escort. He is quite capable of leaving someone reduced to an exploded mass of flesh, and has done so in the past. If he is not given firm boundaries, he is likely to walk all over his charge, and even with boundaries, he may still try.

Knowing what those boundaries are helps leash the pushy, dominating tendencies of his caste. If he knows what repercussions would result from a loss of control from the beginning, he can use that knowledge to prevent it, especially if the consequences would include harm to someone else that does not deserve it. It helps, too, that he sometimes is able to use violence as an outlet, such as when the ships he is guarding are attacked. His job is to keep his ship safe; for that time it is his territory to defend, and he will do so with all of the power necessary.

Hrodi has very strong values. He feels that killing should be avoided whenever reasonably possible. He gets no enjoyment from it when he does have to kill someone, only grim satisfaction that his job is done. Hrodi also believes that those who need a hand up should get it, and he is not against handouts, either, because sometimes handouts get people by until a hand up is effective. He sees people's needs as more important than their feelings, and will act accordingly unless it's pointed out to him. Then he will accommodate... sometimes.

For all of his goals and ideals, Hrodi is not particularly interested in recognition, mainly because that means more contact with other people. He does enjoy seeing the results of his efforts and knowing that he's made a difference, but that's all he wants, and he would prefer that people didn't really know what he was doing. Hrodi also likes being told that he's done a good job, but mostly in a one on one setting.

Likes:
  • Solitude: When he doesn't have to be around people, Hrodi avoids them as much as possible. He owns a small house on a little piece of land for a reason: to get away from everyone. The more time he spends around most other people, the grouchier he gets until he has time to decompress. Some people don't infringe on his solitude and others do. It depends on who they are, how long he's known them, and how much talking they expect him to do.
  • The Sea: Being out to sea and unable to see any land is truly a humbling experience. At the same time, it is exhilarating. It helps satisfy his need for solitude with its vast, seemingly endless emptiness. He likes the sound of the waves on the shore at his house, the scent of the salt water, and the feel of the ship rocking as he falls asleep. It calls to him in a way no Queen has yet and even after a long voyage, he cannot wait to relax on his porch and listen to its sound.
  • Taking care of others: Although Hrodi doesn't like having other people in his space for the most part, he still likes to feel that he is doing something worthwhile when he does spend time around others, rather than that he is wasting his time. He will sometimes go overboard with taking care of others until there is push back, and even if there is, he might sometimes persist. He doesn't like to be told no when he's trying to help, but if the person truly does not want his help, he will stop. Part of this is about control as well: he is interacting on his own terms as much as he can.

Dislikes:
  • Not being in control: This includes both being in control of himself and the current situation, whatever that may be. In his experience, with his role in his family's business, it is when things get out of his control that they tend to go badly. This feeds into a fair number of other dislikes, such as horseback riding when he can't guarantee control of the horse and crowds when he cannot anticipate what everyone might do.
  • Bad Weather: Bad weather causes all sorts of trouble for ships and shipping schedules. Delays, damage, bad morale—all of these make for a tough time out at sea. The unpredictability of weather makes it especially frustrating for Hrodi who likes to simply get his job done and move on to the next one or go home to relax.
  • Asking for help: A combination of independence and pride keep Hrodi from being overly willing to ask for help. He will do so as a last resort, or if what needs to be done is outside of his abilities, such as Healing a major wound. This also feeds into his need for control: if he has to cooperate with others, he loses some of his perceived control over the situation.

Fears:
  • Being truly alone: Hrodi likes his privacy and his alone time, but he does like to see his family and friends, too. Although he acts like a hermit, he could not live alone one hundred percent of the time, nor does he want to. Equally, being alone to him includes not having a romantic relationship. He finds this to be a difficult goal because he is gay. Most often, he has experienced people attempting to embarrass him, rather than true interest.
  • Heights: Hrodi refuses to call this a fear; he claims to simply dislike heights. He will avoid them where possible, such as not going into the crows nest of a ship. If he cannot avoid them, he will complete whatever task is required with forced calmness while refusing to look down. Sometimes he will experience vertigo at great heights, or if he feels unsteady while at a smaller height, such as on the back of a horse.
  • Being Embarrassed: in social situations, Hrodi is very easily embarrassed. He is afraid of saying or doing the wrong thing, and therefore drawing unwanted attention to himself. He reacts to it with anger, sometimes by lashing out at whoever he is embarrassed in front of, or sometimes he will simply leave. Hrodi knows that neither action is productive, but he can't often manage to react differently in the moment.

Craft Strengths:
  • Incite Rage: his original aim was for a leadership role within the Navy and as such, he trained to hone this skill. Although he is no longer in the Navy, it can still sometimes come in useful. He certainly does not have absolute control over it, but he is quite practiced.
  • Healing Craft: Hrodi is not a Healer Warlord Prince, nor is he a replacement for a real Healer, but he has learned more Healing Craft than a Warlord Prince might otherwise know from his cousin, Lucy. It allows him to manage his own wounds or those of others for a decent amount of time until a Healer is available. He also just likes to be able to help people.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Whimsy Craft/Manipulate Shadows: It's really just not his style to cause diversions or try to distract someone in this way. He finds himself most often reacting to an immediate threat, rather than having time to plan out a distraction. He sees the use for this sort of craft in entertainment settings, but has yet to find a practical purpose for him to use it himself. If he did find a situation where it could possibly be useful, it would be pointless for him to attempt to use it because he has not practiced it at all.
  • Hunter’s Mark: To Hrodi’s frustration, this skill does not work well for him despite practice. It would be incredibly useful for him to be able to mark and later find a slave that the group wishes to free, but the marks either fade very quickly or if he gets a certain distance away, if they even stick at all. He would also like to be able to use it aboard ships if there is a specific person he needs to protect above the rest, to make it easier to find them during the chaos of an attack.

History:

Hrodi was born to a family of Glacian immigrants who emigrated several generations before his birth. They stayed largely in Little Terreille, although some have moved to other Territories as well in an ongoing attempt to expand their business.

Hrodi's father and uncle each captained a ship for their family business, and Hrodi was commonly on one or the other as a small child. He was given tasks he could manage when he was old enough, usually chores such as washing floors. After receiving his Birthright, Hrodi went to receive formal training and entered the Navy with the intention of eventually becoming an officer. At the time, his goal was to expand Little Terreille's small Navy to help protect the Territory's trade vessels.

Through his cousin, Lucy, Hrodi met a minor Aristo Healer early in his Navy career. He became very good friends with her, and his family mistook the closeness for more than just friendship and wanted him to marry her. Hrodi, however, never had a desire to stake a claim on her. He also realized how often his eyes went to the other males around him, rather than the females. Still, he tried to convince himself that he felt more than fondness for the Healer and for a time, he went along with their families' attempts to get them together.

It was stressful to work around and with so many people, but Hrodi managed to earn several promotions, eventually coming to command a ship. This success, combined with his Sapphire Jewel and his family's relatively lucrative business caused the Healer's family to become more persistent.

When Hrodi's family joined in the persistence, Hrodi realized that he had no future with the Healer. What he felt for her was no different from what he felt for his sisters or cousins. He felt no desire for her, not in the bedroom, and the few attempts he made with her ended only in embarrassment and hurt feelings. Hrodi broke off this relationship after a long discussion with the woman in which he explained his interest in men. She was angry about being led on, but was understanding enough that she agreed not to tell anyone so that he could have those conversations himself on his own terms. As he spoke with his family and friends, their reactions ranged from shrugs and acceptance to scorn and disgust, although they overall leaned towards neutral to good.

Some of the bad reactions among acquaintances included feigning interest in him to get a response or embarrass him. Although it only happened a few times, it was enough that he started having a difficult time trusting that the advances from potential partners were genuine.

Hrodi also struggled at times to keep his personal life from affecting his work, but he was too stubborn to give up. One assignment he got while in the Navy was to deal with a small pocket of slave trade being attempted by pirates who were taking jewels away from people in order to try to control them. It was not common in Kaeleer at the time, and there were not yet collars as those used in Terreille. It was the first and only time he ever had such an assignment because the attempt at slave trade was stopped there, but it left an impression on him. During this mission, Hrodi met up with Silver Thrax and some of her crew. Hrodi disliked Silver, and he did not think they were actually helping the cause. In fact, he got the impression that they were more like pirates than anything else.

When the collaring of Little Terreille's Territory Queen became public, Hrodi was horrified and angry. He wanted the Navy to revolt and put the Queen back in power, but this didn't happen. It forced him to examine his goals and comrades, and in the end, he made the decision to leave the Navy when it became clear that they were as a whole going to continue to do nothing. It was the most difficult decision he's had to make because his life goals were tied to the Navy and it felt like he was giving up.

From there, Hrodi joined his family's business, seeing no other immediate options. He began to see other ways to his goals as he worked: rather than trying to change the actions of a lot of people, he could control his own, and so that was what he did.

Collars slowly started to become more common, and Hrodi's disgust with the practice grew. He talked his father and uncle into hiring former slaves and other people who Hrodi found needing work as part of their crew. While they could not help everyone because they needed to make money and operate well, they hired as many as possible, offering training for those willing to learn and do hard work for fair pay.

One of the former slaves they hired was Nathaniel Troy, who eventually took the family name of Boesson. There was immediate attraction between the pair, though Hrodi turned down the other Warlord Prince's continued advances because he would have felt like he was taking advantage of his situation.

It was during one of his attempts to help a slave that he met up with Silver and some of her crew again. As far as he could tell, their methods and attitudes had changed little, but at least they were doing something, rather than simply looking the other way or worse yet, pretending to do something while taking no action. He somewhat reluctantly decided to join them because he liked their end goal. Hrodi hoped that he could help make some of their methods align with his version of honorable.

Character in Play:

Getting the ring from Nathaniel's owner hadn't been easy. The man was incredibly stubborn and all the talk in the world would not have gotten him to give it up. Hrodi had not felt rage quite like that in a long time; he had never been so tempted to kill a slave owner, either. It was something he usually tried to avoid, usually tried to get the rest of The Unchained to avoid, and yet he had been so very close. It would have been easy to dive to the depth of his Jewel and end the male's life.

Fin knew it too, knew it and surrendered the controlling ring Hrodi was asking for. Demanding was a better way of putting it. Hrodi had no problem with being demanding, and sometimes with threatening. The rage was an issue. It had been a close thing, but luckily Fin was able to see just enough reason to come out alive.

Finding Nathaniel after getting the ring had not been too difficult. Getting him to the Boesson family's private Healing House where his cousin, Lucy, currently was, was not quite as easy, but he managed. With a sigh, Hrodi glanced over at Nathaniel, who was covered in a blanket, while the coach bumped along. He looked much worse than when Hrodi had first found him a week prior, and Hrodi couldn't help but wonder if it was due to his repeated efforts to get his hands on the controlling ring. It made him feel guilty; he should have been quicker getting the ring.

Lucy exited the house when they arrived, and Hrodi helped Nathaniel out of the coach. She rushed towards them and he slowed her with a flash of his eyes. He could already tell she was sinking into her role as Healer, where her level of self-preservation lessened. He could think of no other reason she would run towards an injured Warlord Prince that she didn't know.

"Oh good, he gave you the blanket. Come in, I've got food waiting and your room is ready for you again." Lucy said and Hrodi stepped up next to Nate, silently offering to help him walk inside. Hrodi brought Nathaniel to the room he had stayed in a week before while Lucy headed to the kitchen. He eased the other Warlord Prince down onto the bed and then straightened, uncertain about what he should do.

He rarely got so involved when he helped someone. Usually he handed off their ring and that was that. His father or uncle handled the process if the person was being hired. Nate hadn't taken his ring, so Hrodi held onto it. Hrodi looked at Nathaniel and pulled down the blanket a little to look at the collar.

"Would you let me take that off for you?" Hrodi asked. He had never removed a collar for someone before; he generally thought it was something they would want to do for themselves.

"You could have taken it off before. You have the ring." Nathaniel answered in a tight voice. Hrodi swallowed.

"I-" Hrodi stopped and his jaw tightened. "Yes, you're right." He had been more interested in getting Nate somewhere safe. It didn't sound like a good excuse, though, so he didn't voice it. He was starting to think that his usual habit of not getting too involved was right. In silence, he called in the controlling ring. Nate didn't look at him while Hrodi fumbled with carefully removing the collar, afraid that he was going to somehow hurt the other Warlord Prince in the process.

When it came away from Nate's neck, Hrodi stepped back, his hands shaking a little. He stared at the collar, disgusting piece of metal that it was. Just holding it made his stomach turn a little and he wondered how someone could possibly think of putting this around someone's neck, how they could possibly want to have that sort of complete and utter control over another person.

Despite Nate's snapped response, removing it still felt like an honor to Hrodi. He wasn't sure what Nate was feeling, couldn't tell from looking at his face, but Hrodi was floored by the magnitude. He had just given Nate his life back by removing the collar.

Then wasn't sure what to do with it.

Nate held his hands out, so Hrodi placed it on his palms. Then it was gone, vanished by Nate along with the ring. Hrodi hoped he never saw it again.
