Appearance

Play By: Daisy Ridley
Distinguishing Features:
Hayden is mixture of Sceltic and Dhemlanese blood. She has dark auburn hair that would be slightly wavy if she ever left it down long enough to be so. It's darker than that of most Scelts, thanks to the Dhemlanese influence in her blood, and her eyes have golden aspects that have turned green into hazel. Her skin is a little darker than the average Scelt, though she's retained a light portion of their freckles across her nose. More striking than any of that, however, is the natural exuberance and joie de vivre about her. Thoughtfulness will pull the smile off of her face, but she's quick to allow it back when someone pulls her attention away from whatever's drawn her focus.

Personality

Personality:
Youthfulness is as much a part of Hayden's personality as it is a part of her age. She's one of those people who seems to be lit up from inside, naturally energetic and wide-eyed. Though the energy about her is substantial and constant, it's less like a cheerleader-y sort of pep and more like an athlete: focused and even. She finds personal value in physical toiling, and enjoys sports and chores that require her to be up and moving. She is adventurous by nature, very curious and generally unafraid of exploring new things. She is a very physical and emotive person in general, not shy of touch or expression. In addition, she tends to be very forthright. Unless she's actively trying to be deceptive (which often ends poorly), whatever goes through her mind is all but written on her face. Hayden respects honesty and kindness, two things she feels are in short supply in the world as it stands. She tries very hard to embody both traits, and she is drawn to others she perceives doing likewise. She tends to try to assume the best about everyone she meets, giving them a fair chance to earn the faith she tries to place in them by default.

Hayden is perceptive, despite her youthfulness. Her optimism and desire to see the best in people can sometimes blind her to things that she doesn't want to see. However, once that caul of idealism is pierced and a person has shown themselves to be untrustworthy, they'll have a very hard time fooling Hayden twice. She is not naturally suspicious but she is intelligent, and she understands that she is just as apt to be manipulated as other people. She doesn't want to believe someone is trying to deceive her, but faced with proof to the contrary she readily accepts it. As much as she wants to believe the best in people, she does understand the world that she lives in.

Though her Virgin Night has passed and she is not completely unaccustomed to the touch of lovers, neither is she terribly experienced. The nearness of a male she likes will still make her into a nervous idiot, the way it does to so many young women. If there's no physical attraction, however, Hayden is just as comfortable hanging out with a group of male friends as she is with females; perhaps even slightly moreso. Something of a tomboy herself, she has never had a tremendous amount of patience for some of the frivolities that seemed to dominate the attention of the female friends she made at Salamanca. She cares little for fashion or jewelry or dolling one's self up to present an altered version of one's self for the sake of a paramour.

Despite being generally pleasant most of the time (extenuating circumstances aside), Hayden is still Blood. The passion and energy that drive her to be so outgoing and energetic are no less intense when she is upset. An emotional creature, she can go quickly from one extreme to the other, though the transition typically requires outside stimulation. She'll be the first to cry at a sad song, or laugh at a joke, or stand up and curse when she hears about some injustice being perpetrated. She feels her emotions more deeply than others seem to, and that is just as true of sadness and anger as it is of joy and optimism.

Hayden is generally content to go with the flow when decisions are being made. If she has to make a choice, though, once she's made up her mind on something she can be willful to a fault. She has spent much of her life being the most powerful among her peers, and those who know her well know that her anger is as deep as her joy is high. She's spent a lot of years having people do things her way, and she is prone to forgetting that others may know better.

Likes:
  • Animals. They are so much simpler than people. The older Hayden gets, the more confusing and complex a dance it becomes to navigate social situations. Animals have always been, and will always be, as straightforward as Hayden likes to be, herself. She does not have to be able to articulate herself well for them to understand what she's feeling, and she doesn't have to worry about saying the wrong thing and hurting their feelings when she does talk out her feelings. They are generally not deceptive, and will often give affection as freely as they receive it.
  • Doing good. Hayden sincerely believes that it is the duty of every Blood to put as much good and kindness into the world as possible. There is so much darkness and pain already, that to add to it when avoidable seems a crime against nature. She carries a great deal of guilt with her from accidentally harming Davos, a clan member, and from the knowledge that she might have been able to protect her family if she'd been home with them during the massacre. Despite how deeply she believes Davos was wrong to want to use her to level the Killan Queen and her Court, part of her nonetheless feels guilty that she ran away instead of avenging her clan. Doing good deeds and helping others helps to assuage some of this guilt.
  • Vilma Ahlgren. Vilma is the Glacian farmer near whose property Hayden fell when exhaustion dropped her from the winds after her escape from Dhemlan. Perhaps the world's most anti-social Hearth Witch, Vilma nonetheless nursed Hayden back to health and came to care for her wellbeing. She is a straight-shooter, which Hayden appreciates, and she has given endlessly to support Hayden while she hides, with no visible gain for herself other than some hitherto-unwanted company. With no family left to her (as far as she knows), Hayden has latched onto Vilma as the closest surrogate.
Dislikes:
  • Deception. Hayden spent her youngest years in rural Scelt, where people seemed generally honest and straightforward and noble, in their own ways. She went from there to the University in Dhemlan, where the culture shifted drastically. Lies and manipulations were everywhere, especially around a young girl with such a powerful Birthright. The social climate was downright bloody, and it was exhausting for Hayden to try and keep up with who was manipulating whom. She learned an intense dislike for people who try to present themselves as something other than what they are.
  • Glacia. Vilma is, so far, the only thing in the frozen wasteland of Glacia that doesn't deserve to be wiped off the map, in Hayden's opinion. That likely has something to do with the fact that her first introduction to the place was dropping exhausted from the Winds into the mountains in Winter. She nearly died while trying to wander towards civilization, and likely would have if Vilma hadn't found her and cared for her. More than that, though, Hayden has since learned about the people and culture of the frozen Territory. Their rabid Dark Religion, their collars, their smiling faces that hide daggers and malice, and she doesn't like any of it.
  • Being idle. Hayden used to be able to enjoy relaxing at a riverside, or leisurely walks through the woods. Now, she finds that if she does not have something to do, her mind wanders almost without fail back to Scelt, and the horrors from which she has run. She worries about what trouble her presence might bring to Vilma. She worries about her Offering, and whether she will actually have to do it, or whether she might get away with ignoring it indefinitely. For someone whose Craft is so keyed in to her emotions, such incessant worrying can create problems. She has found that having something to occupy her mind, a task to complete, is a handy cure for a wandering mind.

    Fears:
  • Davos Sheane. She has nightmares, still, about the night she fled. In the span of just a few moments, he changed from someone she respected and trusted implicitly to someone she couldn't even recognize. He seemed a monster to her, demanding and screaming and pleading with her to come back to Scelt to help slaughter a clan. He was so angry when she left him, and as unlikely as it may be, she is still quietly terrified that one day she'll turn around and he'll be standing there, ready to drag her back to Scelt to fight his one-man war.

  • Her strength. Hayden got upset and nearly killed Davos without meaning to. It was far from the first time an emotional outburst from her had caused an accident, but it was the most traumatizing. She has always been nervous about the strength of her Craft, feeling a bit like a bull in a china shop when it came to the delicate and specific lessons she learned alongside her peers. The depth of her Birthright made her stick out, and even before she ran away she hated being unable to blend in with those around her in that aspect. Now, living with the ghost of what she did to Davos, and knowing how volatile her emotions can be, she fears another accidental outburst and the very real possibility that she could unintentionally harm someone else.
  • Her Offering. She has been putting it off intentionally. It's hard enough on her with her Red, to keep herself hidden and fed and out of the public eye. It would be a little easier on her in Glacia, with so many very dark jewels about. Still, there's a chance she could emerge with a Black, and that wouldn't go unnoticed in any territory. She's terrified of what that would mean for her, as far as losing her ability to hide as well as her ability to control her Craft.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Stealth Craft. It did not take many games of hide-and-seek when she was younger for Hayden to figure out that her Birthright made her easier to sense. She began teaching herself from a young age to pull back on her own scents as much as she could. When she reached the age where she was formally trained in this skill, she took to it eagerly and excelled in its application. Her strength in this sort of Craft is really the only reason she's managed to stay hidden as long as she has.
  • Travel Craft. Hayden could sense the Winds overhead from a young age, though she did not know how to articulate what she sensed. When she eventually learned about the Winds and how they could be used for travel, she instinctively reached for one and let it take her away. It terrified her the first time (the landing was quite rough) but she eventually learned to navigate them with more finesse. She does not require a landing pad to join or leave a Wind now, and has in fact never learned to use one.
  • Advanced Combat Shielding. Though Hayden's accident with Davos initially inhibited her ability to construct shields properly, consistent practice under the tutelage of Jonothan Harmaa has helped Hayden to not only overcome her emotional hangups with this Craft type, but to find her stride and then excel beyond the typical. Hayden's shields are now stronger and longer lasting than average even for her considerable Jewel strength.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Deception Craft. Hayden is as straightforward as they come, for the most part. She typically enjoys people, and it seems wicked to her to try and manipulate who someone is or what they want just to suit her own ends. She tried to learn this Craft for the sake of her grades, but her distaste for it, combined with her fear of accidentally over-powering an effort, wouldn't let her succeed. She's not just weaker at this Craft; so far she can't do it at all. This is unfortunate, as a little Deception Craft here and there would make her attempts at hiding MUCH easier.

  • Defensive Shielding. Hayden has never seen real combat, and was never truly expected to. She lived the life of a Dhemlanese aristocrat for most of her schooling years, and though she had cursory lessons in this Craft, she never took to it. It was perhaps this inexperience that made her attempt to rebuff Davos go so awry and nearly kill him. Now, however, it is more than lack of experience that hinders her. She cannot call up a shield without remembering Davos, and how it felt for that instant where she thought she'd killed him. She can manage a shield when she has to, but it holds nowhere near the strength a Red should hold.

  • Mind Craft. The night the Territory Court burned, Hayden attempted to compel Draven Rook into stepping aside to save him from the carnage. That compulsion fired wide and hard, though, and severely damaged Draven's mind. Hayden felt his sanity give way beneath her Craft, and the memory of this accidental injury has handicapped her ability to call upon this and related Craft at all. She is unable to control the force of her Craft in such a delicate application, and any attempt she might make to influence another's thoughts directly would result in a similar disaster.

  • Seduction Craft. Jonothan has tried to work with Hayden on this as well, but has seen far less luck than his other efforts at training her. There is something in Hayden that abhors the thought of forcing someone else to admire or desire her, and perhaps it is this deep-seated reluctance that is the reason for her troubles with this type of Craft. She is not just unskilled in it; she cannot use this Craft at all; any attempts dissipate without any effect on the target.

    History:
Hayden Sheane was the product of passion more than planning. Her Mother trained at Dhemlan's Naval Academy in preparation for her service in Scelt's Navy, and while there she met a very charming Prince named Mateo who was more than happy to help Moira explore the sexual awakening she endured after her Virgin Night. Moira returned home to Scelt and to her childhood sweetheart, whom she married less than a year after Hayden was born. Moira bore Adam Sheane two children of his own, though Adam always treated Hayden like she was his own as well. Adam was a farmer in a rural village in Denford, and while his more adventurous wife was frequently home and then gone again during her service to the Navy for many years, Adam raised the three children with a firm but kind hand.

The personalities of Hayden's parents played a highly impactful role on her development. From her mother she inherited a ceaseless curiosity and a predisposition towards adventure and optimism. From her father she learned patience, the value of hard work, and the satisfaction that could be had from tending the land and having a stable home. Both of her parents were honest, blunt people. No one was quite sure where the child got her seemingly endless reservoir of energy from, though more than a few beleaguered looks between parents tried to suggest it surely came from the other side of the family. Though Moira never saw Mateo again and did not acknowledge him as Hayden's biological father, the two corresponded via letter on occasion. Moira had informed him of Hayden's birth, and while Mateo was fondly disposed towards the girl in theory, he did not mind in the slightest that Moira had no interest in making him part of the child's life. It was enough to know that she was doing well, somewhere across the ocean where she did not greatly upset Mateo's bachelor lifestyle.

When Hayden emerged from her Birthright Ceremony clutching a Red jewel, things changed. Not for Hayden, necessarily, not right away. All around her, though, there was suddenly a great deal of interest in her future. From the moment her Birthright was recorded, people began whispering that she might one day descend to the Black. And wouldn't that be useful? A Sheane with the Black? Eirne Sheane had just lost the territory throne to Loreniel Killan. Though Moira's family had been somewhat sheltered from the public consciousness because of the rural nature of their home, they feared the day when word got around to the ambitious Sheane Queen that there was such a dark Birthright in their midst. In his letters, Mateo began suggesting that Hayden come to Dhemlan for her schooling. He offered to pay her way through the prestigious Academies there. While Moira and Adam would have preferred to keep their daughter with them, they were not blind to what looked like the inevitability of Hayden being pulled into someone's political machinations or worse. They toughed it out for a while, trying to make life as normal for Hayden as they could. She had an appetite that could shame fully grown men, and her mood swings as she grew became sharper and more extreme. Still, raised among a family who loved her, the girl did alright.

The political situation only grew more tense and dangerous as the years passed, and Eirne Sheane only seemed to grow more determined to rope the young girl into her court. To prevent this, Moira and Adam eventually gave in to Mateo's suggestions. Hayden was loathe to leave her family behind, but also ecstatic about the idea of traveling to Dhemlan and seeing another culture. She left Scelt when she was twelve, joined Mateo's household in Dhemlan and began studying at one of the junior universities there. Dhemlan was a stark change from the life Hayden knew before. Eager to impress his (now potentially very useful) daughter, Mateo showered Hayden in luxuries. Hayden loved some things, did not love others, but was ceaselessly blunt in her evaluation of them. She was a very social creature, and the best part of being in Dhemlan was that there seemed to be an endless supply of people to meet and relate to. She learned some difficult lessons about trust and honesty among her young friends, but nothing the average young woman doesn't learn while growing. She found herself more naturally inclined to join in on the rough and tumble games the boys played than more delicate pastimes the young girls seemed to enjoy. Hayden was fair, but not pretty in the refined way the Dhemlanese teenagers were pretty. She had also grown up tending to two younger brothers, so she got along well with boys who were happier to treat her as one of the guys than be intimidated by a potential suitor with such a strong reservoir of personal power. It was just as well for Hayden, because none of them measured up anyway to her own personal version of Prince Charming, supplied by one Davos Sheane. Eirne had tasked Davos with keeping in contact with the girl, ostensibly to keep her informed of matters back home and be a line of support and camaraderie from her Sceltic roots. His visits were not terribly frequent, but he did travel occasionally and he was certain when he did to stop in and spend a little time with Hayden, who thought he hung the moon. He taught her about sailing and about poetry and about Scelt, and when the time came he saw her through her Virgin Night. Hayden was completely infatuated.

Back in Scelt, Eirne pulled the entirety of Hayden's family into service in Denford, a clear honor. Once she had complete access to Moira and Adam, it did not take long for the subtle, wily Queen to seduce them into seeing things her way. Finally convinced that Eirne cared just as much for Hayden's wellbeing as they did themselves, Adam and Moira eventually yielded and sent word for Hayden to come home. Mateo, unwilling to lose his own access to Hayden, refused to deliver the summons and instead argued back and forth via letter with Moira about allowing the girl to finish her education where she was. She would surely return to Scelt when she was done, he said, and he was loathe to willingly give up the last few years he'd have with her in his home.

Before the matter was resolved, Loreniel Killan killed Eirne Sheane and most of her court. When Davos failed to find the support he desired for enacting vengeance, he went to Dhemlan to recruit Hayden. Mad and desperate, he all at once informed the girl that her family had been killed and demanded that she return to Scelt to help him lay waste to the Killan Queen's people in retribution. Hayden, who'd never willingly harmed a soul in all her life, was horrified and understandably distraught. The more she asked him to slow down and wait, however, the more aggravated Davos become. He frightened Hayden, and distressed her to the point where one flinch too many in her direction drew an unintended and instinctual reaction. Hayden had never excelled at the wielding of Craft shields, and in that moment of duress she managed even less control than normal. Barriers at strength of the Red shot out from her at lightning speed, and the unprepared Davos was pummeled backwards and through a wall, unshielded and unprotected.

Though Hayden initially thought she'd killed him, he soon made it clear that she had not. He was wounded, but furious, and Hayden took to the Winds to flee. His screams of betrayal followed her until she climbed to the Red, and let it fling her far, far away from Dhemlan. She rode the Winds until she could not hold on any longer, and when she released them it was not gracefully. She was conscious enough to land without killing herself, though she was far from unscathed. Blind and near mindless with despair, Hayden wandered the frozen terrain searching for civilization, until exhaustion took her and she dropped. She was fortunate in that she'd nearly made it to a small village called Hvila, in the Salo Province of Glacia. Vilma Alhgren, a Tiger Eye Hearth Witch, owned a small farm on the outskirts of the village and came across the unconscious girl before she perished. Vilma took Hayden in and nursed her back to health, and Hayden has remained with Vilma since then, trying her best to remain hidden in the Glacian cold.

    Character in Play:

For a moment, there was silence. At least, there seemed to be. Hayden was still afraid, but that enormous, slowly-building pressure of fear and distress had resolved itself and for just a moment, things were quiet. Then a piece of the broken wall dropped, and then another. The world seemed to slow down, and Hayden opened her eyes to realize Davos was no longer standing before her. Neither, for that matter, was the wall that had been behind him. She found herself staring at a gaping hole torn through the exterior wall of her room. Beyond it, in the patch of grass between the house and the walkway that led down to the pier, lay Davos, prone and unmoving. Hayden's heart seized in her chest, and her stomach knotted.

"No," she whispered, horrified. She moved forward, stepped through the demolished wall even as her eyes welled with new tears. "Davos--" she started to call, started to weep, thinking she'd killed him. He moved, though, and she gasped. For a half-second she was relieved, until he sat up and fixed a burning glare on her the likes of which she'd never seen. He seemed as much demon as man to her in that moment, and visceral fear upended the fine hairs on her arms and neck. She took a step back. "Davos," she begged, devolving into tears. "Please." But he only heard more protestations, more refusals to submit to what he saw as her righteous duty. His fury manifested in the very air around him, and whether the thunder she heard was real or imagined didn't matter; it was absolutely terrifying.

"Traitor," he growled, as he pulled himself to his feet. He was wounded, but alive. The scent of his blood on the air was nearly as frightening as the electricity and power that was welling up around him. "TRAITOR!!!" he shouted, more forcefully when she tried to plead again. He took a step forward, and that was all it took to exhaust the girl's courage. She reached for the Winds overhead, and let them lift her away from him. His pained, furious screams followed her, chasing her all the way to the Red and promising her that he'd find her and return to her what was due. Hayden fled as far away as she could go, trying to escape the only remaining piece of the Clan that had birthed her.

The roller likes me when I roll for other people.

Every time I've done family rolls, I've gotten dark jewels for people and more often than not an opal to sapphire.

Now that I've said this, it's going to be all white to TE from here on out.

Nicole, as plot leader of Glacia, has looked over her too. Lovely job!

Congratulations!

Hayden has been blessed with Advanced Combat Shielding.

You may add this specialty & its description to this character's existing Craft Strengths section, along with an additional Craft Weakness for balance.
