Appearance

Distinguishing Features:

Gustav’s once dark hair has gone white in his old age, lending him an air of respectability originally not present in his humble roots. His deep blue eyes are sharp and clear, seeming to catch everything around him at a glance. He is a powerfully built man, but a failed assassination attempt from a couple of years ago has left him with a slight limp, which he offsets with the use of a cane. He has a penchant for dark colors, preferring his suits to be brown, black, gray, or navy.

Personality

Personality:

Gustav Fyers is a kind man with a grandfatherly attitude and a kind word for everyone he meets. He enjoys his walks in the park each afternoon, his daily teas at nine am, noon, and three pm, and games of chess and trivia with some of the other men he’s befriended over the years. He’s a quick study and an excellent teacher of Protocol, combining a rigorous training regimen with explanations of the purpose behind everything he teaches. He’s possessed of a courtly polish not seen in men half his age.  Gustav’s outlook on life wasn’t even soured after he was mugged and viciously beaten just a few years ago during the onset of the gang violence in Goth. The attack left him with a permanent limp but Gustav sees through Little Terreille’s darkness and loves it all the same. Crime is an unfortunate side-effect of society, but that is no reason to give in to despair.

Gustav Fyers is a nice enough man, the rich people say, and a fun diversion at dinner parties. But he’s an elderly man with the lightest jewels one can possess and treads a thin line between being endearing and a doddering old fool. With any luck, Mother Night will show him mercy and he’ll return to the Darkness in his sleep.

Gustav, for his part, just smiles. It secretly delights him when people take him at face value.

The real Gustav Fyers is a shark in human form who devours others on the way to achieving his goals. Only children are spared from his wrath; if he is at all the gentle, grandfatherly man he portrays to the world, then it is only when he is teaching young men and women how to use Protocol to the benefit of themselves and their families.  The loss of his only daughter early in his life fuels his anger toward the rich, aristos, and anyone else he considers doing better than him at any given time. The people who look down at paupers and beggars, the people who ignore the damage they do the slums with their power games are the ones he hates most, the ones whose secrets and lies matter the most to him. Growing up in the slums of Dena Nehele, the Jacks Guild directed his intense interest in Protocol and Blood Law into a lifelong hunger and obsession with accumulating knowledge on everything around him.

Recognizing early on that he was outclassed in terms of raw power by most other Blood, Gustav forced himself to adapt subtlety, misdirection, and outright treachery as his primary tools. Bribes, subversion, blackmail, compulsion and even outright murder are acceptable to gain even an inch of ground toward his goals. He’d open (someone else’s) veins to fuel his ambition if it means creating a legacy he can be proud of. He’s slaughtered Landen and Blood like for the sole purpose of honing his timing and precision with his Craft.

If he must kill an entire Province (minus the children) of people to gain deeper knowledge and precision of his Craft or for greater advancement of his aims, then that is the Price for greatness. Physical pains and maladies take up the balance of his attention whenever he isn't focused on improving his Craft or advancing his station. The small guilt he does feel over sins long past isn't enough to keep him up at night or make him rethink his life.

Let others conflate his elderly status with weakness. Let them call him a liability or overlook him based on their own small-minded thoughts.

They’re doing exactly what he wants them to do, whether they know it or not.

Likes:

  • 1. Being Underestimated: It rankles the ego of most people to be overlooked in a crowd or not recognized for how amazing they think they are. For Gustav, it’s a personal point of pride. When one is underestimated, their adversaries don’t use maximum effort to defeat them or bring improper tools to combat them. If people consider him an old fool, he’ll gladly play the part, even as he moves to take everything they hold dear. The upside of being underestimated is that when you do something noteworthy, people never attribute it to you.

  • 2. Information: Power is power, but information tells you how to wield it. Gustav has spent years collecting information on the gangs and the rich people of Little Terreille. Long hours were devoted toward tracking who owned which businesses, who made deals with whom, and whose children engaged in drugs and all other types of depravity. Information like this gives one an edge in negotiations and people are willing to pay dearly for any scrap of knowledge that puts them a step ahead of their competitors.

  • 3. His Light Jewels: Gustav recognizes that his jewels are a blessing from the Darkness that many Blood never receive. The Dark Jeweled certainly have a greater amount of power to draw from, but they also must take greater pains to keep that power in check. They must eat more or risk their jewels feeding off of their own bodies to stay powered. Gustav relishes the fact that unintended consequences usually don’t come into play when he calls upon his power. A Black Jewel can destroy mountains (or Territory Courts) , of course, but it’s just as likely to destroy its bearer.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Harming/Murdering Children: His own daughter was murdered solely because her caste represented a threat to a group of out-of-control, money-grubbing aristos. Gustav does not take many things personally but the harm, or murder, of children forces the old man to divert his attention from his current plan and engage in payback for the parties involved. He makes that payback as lethal as possible, as the Price for taking a life unexplored is the taking of a life unworthy.

  • 2. Old Age: Getting old is hell on the knees. And the hips. And the back. Gustav’s survived assassination attempts, one of which gave him the limp he now bears. He can’t run as fast as he used to and his shoes don’t bite the ground the way he likes. Aging cannot be stopped, bargained with, or blackmailed. Each day he gets out of bed is a victory, but he gets out of bed just a little slower and sleeps just a little later. Eventually, his body will betray him and he’ll be of no use to anyone.

This, to Gustav, is a fate worse than death.

  • 3. Getting his hands dirty: Gustav doesn’t like physical combat or having to defend himself from attack. He can do it in a pinch, but he prefers to work through subordinates, safely insulated from the initial repercussions of his gambits. Some people call it cowardly and Gustav is fine with being thought a coward. Brave men who do their own killing eventually run into someone they can’t overpower and then they are dead men who benefit no one. A street rumble is for young men with more balls than brains.

Gustav is too old for that shit.

    Fears:

  • 1. The Guilds of Dena Nehele: There are days when Gustav doesn’t think about his old life and all of the horrible things he had to do to get here. There are other nights when he thinks he sees a shadow move in a way it shouldn’t, or someone on the street watches him just a second longer than he likes. Paranoia is a healthy thing in the life of a spy, but Gustav is not paranoid. He abandoned one of the three Guilds after murdering or enslaving members of the other two. His reasons for doing it don’t matter. They’ve already tried twice and they’ll try again until they succeed. They won’t let old age steal their victory.

  • 2. Memory Lapses: Gustav’s mind is as sharp and clear as it ever was, but now and again, he forgets a name that he should know. As those lapses become more frequent, Gustav wonders if his wits are starting to go. This is a terrifying idea to a man who prides himself on being the most well-informed person in the room. Details are where deals are made and broken and Gustav does not want to die or lose face because he forgot to account for something minor.

  • 3. The Dark Jeweled: Despite his teachings and belief in Protocol being the greater equalizer among the Blood, the fact is that Dark Jeweled Blood have a distinct advantage in the amount of power they can call forth in a pinch. If Gustav was twenty years younger or five steps darker in the Abyss, he’d pit his skill against anyone. Unfortunately...he’s not. If one of the Dark Jeweled attacked him, Gustav would be fortunate to get out an elegant “oh shit” before he was nothing more than a bloody smear on the concrete. He prefers to deal with the Dark Jeweled where possible and manipulate them where unable, but the fear of being destroyed by one is always close at hand.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Advanced Compulsions: Compulsion begins long before one ever reaches to their jewels for the power to back their desires. Gustav's skill in this craft to replaces the blunt force of compulsion with more subtle touches to achieve his aims. His use of compulsion is so insidious that his targets usually aren't aware that he's using it at all. He further cloaks his use of Craft in a series of leading questions designed to get his targets to open up and share more than they intended to a seemingly attentive listener. Decades of trial and error have shown him that he can even influence Landen minds to a small degree with the barest whisper of Craft, rather than the cudgels of will that most Blood are known for, usually leaving them a headache that will pass in a few hours’ time.

  • 2. Extended Duration Spells: Gustav has mastered the art of tying his Craft to specific triggers that take effect long after he has left the scene. He uses this Craft most often in conjunction with his Compulsion Craft to continue the effects of his compulsions after his targets have left him behind. Even when resistance occurs, it usually happens so long after the initial delivery that the victim cannot be sure just when they were influenced.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Memory Crystals: The last few years have seen Gustav turn his attention to training in this skill, but the going is slow and the successes are few. Creating memory crystals is difficult for Gustav after his most recent attempt where he tried to create one with an image of his daughter's face. Something went wrong and now there is a stranger's face where his baby girl's once was. Whenever Gustav is tempted to try again, he takes out that memory crystal and wonders if girl pictured truly is his daughter or one of the many children he's manipulated into his service along the way.

  • 2. Physical Enhancement: Once upon a time, Gustav was deeply fluent in the usage of this Craft. After surviving two assassination attempts and having his knee nearly shattered, Gustav finds that the most he can do with this Craft is increase his physical dexterity, letting him write faster or manipulate small objects with precision. Attempts to increase his strength or stamina just leave him winded and drained.

The last attempt nearly induced a heart attack and it was among the most terrifying moments of Gustav's life.

    History:

Andrei Ionescu was born in the slums of Lower Caeceian, Dena Nehele to a cobbler and a seamstress. His parents sacrificed so that he could go to bed with a fully stomach each night, but Andrei dreamed of living like the aristos who inhabited Bidea. One of the first books he ever read was a history book on Dena Nehele that he found in the trash. He fell in love with the glamorous lives of the well-to-do, which only lead to further frustration with his actual life. More reading impressed upon him that learning Protocol and being assigned to a Court would allow Andrei to lift his family out of the slums and into the life they dreamed of.

His father passed away in his sleep due to natural causes the morning after his Birthright Ceremony. When he received his White Jewel, Andrei realized that he’d never possess the titanic well of power those around him were blessed with. He was also smaller and less stout than the other boys and girls he knew, lending to most people discounting his skills outright. The local butcher, Victor Pavel, saw what few others did.

Andrei loved learning and he knew his village better than most adults. Victor offered Andrei marks to deliver cuts of meat to the wealthy residents of their town. Each day, upon his arrival at work, Victor quizzed Andrei on the place and people he saw the day before, sometimes several days before, granting him a little extra money when he brought back choice pieces of information. By the time Andrei turned sixteen, he’d been a member of the Jacks Guild for over half of his life. Spending his money with an eye toward the future, Andrei purchased a few nice suits for Court. He still held onto the idea of getting his mother out of the slums and making her life better. Being a courtier would solve their problems and maybe, just maybe, his children and grandchildren would never know hunger or want.

Once he received his Yellow, Andrei made peace with the idea that he’d never be overtly powerful in the realm of Craft, or win duels of outright power. But then he doesn’t need to be. His jewels were only a measure of his potential, not ability.

The Village Court gave Andrei his first glimpse into the world of the rich he so coveted. Lord Girigu, Steward of the Village Court, took one look at the man wearing second hand suits and dismissed all of his skill with Protocol. Girgiu refused to ever let his young man better himself, reasoning that slum trash should stay in the slums where it belonged. Andrei hated every second of Court life and, over time, grew to hate the aristos and their favored pets, who’d all gained their lives and money through accidents of birth, rather than hardwork and sacrifice.

When he discovered that Lord Girgiu was siphoning money from the Court’s finances, Andrei confronted him. Girgiu beat him senseless and dismissed him from his position at Court. Dejected, Andrei returned home to the slums and the Jacks Guild. Looking back over his actions, Andrei realized he’d gone about the entire thing the wrong way.

A year later, he returned to the Court and spoke with Lord Girgiu once more. This time, Lord Girgui recognized the error of his ways and apologized to Andrei for humiliating him. Then the Warlord confessed his crimes to the Queen, who promptly stripped him of his position. His mother died that year, but Andrei possessed a new confidence and had a new family in his brothers among the Jacks. He especially watched out for the children, teaching a few of them himself. He also met his wife Diona at his mother’s funeral and the two were inseparable from that day forward.

Had the story ended there, Andrei Ionescu would have remained a footnote in history.

The birth of his first daughter drew the attention of greater forces.

Natalia was her father’s pride and joy, but she was also born a Queen, a caste with dire implications in Dena Nehele. Andrei did all that he could to keep her hidden, but someone found out. That information made it’s way through the ranks of the Guilds and eventually, the Myos Guild was contracted to remove the girl before she became an issue. Andrei was away with his team when the assassin came.

He returned to find Diona and Natalia long dead.

Grief gave way to rage as Andrei worked to locate their killers. It took four years of watching, waiting, and planning to find the assassin who’d done the deed. Gustav caused that man’s jewels to be broken and for him to be sold into the employ of an up-and-coming Prince named Garen L’Voide. But eventually, Andrei located the person who’d sold out his family, only to find that it was his former teacher, Victor.

You got soft, Andrei. The Guild is above family. Above children. You forgot that, so I had to remind you, old friend.

Enraged at his old friend’s betrayal, Andrei drew upon the full power of his jewels and compelled Victor to drive a knife into his thigh without making a sound until he ran out of strength. It’s the only time in his life that he’s ever used anything more than a light nudge against someone’s mind. With his mentor now dead, Andrei realized that angering two of the three guilds of Dena Nehele would cost him his life. The Guild Master would see him dead before the end of the year if he didn’t leave now.

    Leaving Dena Nehele was easy.

The Service Fair was a chance to start a new life.

Andrei left his old life behind and became Gustav Fyers, teacher of Blood Law and Protocol. He’d hoped to be assigned to Dharo or Scelt upon arrival, but the longer he remained in Little Terreille, the more he loved the place. Sure, it was a rank shithole of corruption, but it was also a melting pot of food, culture, and art from both Terreille and Kaeleer. Diving into his new life, Gustav opened a small school for the training of young men and women in Protocol to better serve the Courts. Several of his students grew up to open their own schools under his aegis or went on to serve in Village, District, and Province Courts across Little Terreiile.

Meanwhile, Gustav recruited children in the slums of Goth to act his new agents, beginning his own “guild” of sorts to insulate him from reprisals by the guilds of Dena Nehele and to create his own network of spies to blanket Little Terreille.

It’s been twenty-seven years since he arrived and Gustav has fallen in love with “Little T”, though he hates that particular sobriquet for it. Bride Marchalan’s mother was Queen and that passed down to Bride, who nearly crushed the Territory helping refugees. Logan Morr took over, collaring the Queen and practically ensuring that he wouldn’t receive much in the way of help from Gustav. He has a soft spot for Queens despite never finding his own, in memory of his little Natalia. Business, both legal and not-so, have done well enough that he doesn’t want for money, though he’s always been frugal due to his childhood. An assassination attempt by a member of the Jacks Guild damaged his knee and left him with an enduring limp.

Oh, and he’s now sixty-seven and feeling every single day of it every time he walks down the street.

He had spies in a number of Courts across the Territory, knowing where the money and power in the Territory lay. The very slow rise to prominence of the Dark Claw caught his notice and Gustav resolved to watch the organization as he watched the Gangs of Goth for any indication that widespread violence was coming.

He was utterly blindsided by the destruction of Logain’s Court.

Two of his best spies died in that conflagration and the Gangs of Goth are doing an excellent job of murdering the very children he uses as his spies. Rumors swirl of a Black Jewel setting up shop in Little Terreille. And recently, that same Black Jewel wiped out the Hell Lords with what appeared to be an army of help (though why a Black Jewel needs help with anything is a matter of deep interest to him).

It’s never been worse in Little Terreille, but Gustav Fyers is a survivor. The new Territory Court can benefit from his skills and he can benefit from putting as many young and able bodies between himself and whoever comes trying to kill him. He considers this an equitable arrangement.

Besides, retirement would kill him faster than the gangs possibly could.

    Character in Play:

Five children, three girls and two boys, took their seats and directed their attention to the front of the room. Gustav raised both hands, as though holding an invisible set of ropes and let his gaze wander over each of them. He raised his arms a fraction of an inch and the children, as a single unit, sat up straighter, opened their eyes wider, and smiled  in accordance with their Gustav’s wishes. The children who attended the Fyers School would someday represent their families in the Courts of every Province. Lesson Two for his students defined his goals:

Perfect posture is the key to perfect Protocol.

Satisfied, Gustav lowered his arms and folded his hands in front of him. His charcoal gray suit was expertly tailored, the best that money could buy, in conjunction with Lesson Three:

    Proper appearance precedes proper Protocol.

All right, children. Pens up. Stop writing.” Gustav said. Within seconds, the five children lifted their pens from their papers and sat waiting for further instruction. Gustav walked forward, leaning on his cane to support his shattered knee, and gathered up the papers from the desks. He returned to the front of the room and sat down at his desk and skimmed the papers for salient information.

The children of the idle rich saw and heard the damndest things.

Lord Rourke came to the house begging for money today. Daddy said he’s a worthless druggie now.

Mommy cried all night last night because Daddy said that we’re poor now. The Territory Court is outlawing slavery. Mommy said she doesn’t want to go back to Westwood.   Soraya, his star pupil scrawled, lips pursed in thought.

Uncle Leandro told Papa that there’s a Black Jewel in Little Terreille.

    Gustav stared at those words.

...there’s a Black Jewel in Little Terreille.

He looked up at the boy who’d written it, Henri, and reminded himself to talk to him after class.

The door to the building opened and a Raejian man entered the classroom. He looked around, his eyes drifting over each of the children in the room before settling his gaze on Gustav himself. He wore Purple Dusk and Gustav set the papers down and took off his glasses. The Raejian wore the insignia of the Gatekeepers, a gang of idiot thugs that had been extorting businesses in Goth for a couple of years. The man who usually came to Gustav’s place was a Scelt, but no one had seen him in a few weeks.

You own this place, pal?” the Raejian asked.

Yes, I’m the proprietor, Prince Fyers. Can I help you?” Gustav asked.

No, but I think I can help you. I’m here to sell you insurance. We’re living in dangerous times, my friend. You never know when mayhem might strike. I’d like to make you a deal.

Gustav’s smile was brittle, but polite.

Another one. I suppose another lesson is in order.

Cloak and Dagger, his normal escorts, were out on business. Gustav sighed to himself and rubbed his face, every one of his sixty-seven years coming back to him in the process.

Well, please come in, my friend. I suppose we’d better get down to business. Henri, will you please close the blinds and then step outside? Lessons are done for now.” Gustav asked politely, even as he beckoned the Raejian forward to the seat on the other side of his desk. The Raejian came in and sat down, leaning back in his chair and propping his feet up on Gustav’s desk. The Prince bristled inwardly, but said nothing.

Henri rose from his desk and walked over to the window, quickly pulling down the blinds. Then he stepped outside and closed the door behind him.

Thank you for being smart about this, Prince. Look, the Gatekeepers only ask for twenty percent of your earnings a month. In exchange, we--

--will consider not doing physical harm to myself or my students, until you decide to jack up the prices. And the cycle will go on and on until I leave or I can’t pay, at which point you’ll just kill all of us anyway. Do I have it right?” Gustav asked.

Well, I wasn’t going to put it like that, but--

Shut up.” Gustav said, and this time he drew upon his White Jewel and locked eyes with the gang member. The Raejian tried to speak but his sentence died on his tongue. Now Gustav leaned back in his chair and considered the man.

For the next five minutes, you’ll focus on my voice to the exclusion of everything else. You will not attempt to strengthen your barriers. In fact, you will lower them and leave them down. You will answer questions when I ask them. Otherwise, you'll not speak for any reason. You will sit in that chair and listen while I give my students their next lesson.” Gustav said.

    He looked to the class.

What did this man do wrong?

    He didn’t make an appointment.

    He just walked in.

    He didn’t introduce himself.

Yes, that’s correct. He didn’t follow the basic rules of Protocol. Announce yourself. Determine who is higher in caste and station. Show appropriate respect. What does that tell us?” Gustav asked.

"He had a bad teacher!" they answered as one, giggling at their unified response. Gustav smile contained not a small amount of pride. He looked at the gang member spoke.

"Why did you come here today?" Gustav asked.

"Because I need to bring in some insurance fees." the Raejian said.

"Don't call it that. That's not what it is. Speak the truth." Gustav demanded.

"I need to bring in some protection money."

    "What happens if you don't?"

"I'll get kicked out of the gang and they'll beat me up pretty bad, too."

"And you figured an old man teaching a bunch of children was an easy mark? Do I have it right?"

"Yeah. Figured you'd break a hip if you ran too fast."

"You should be so lucky." Gustav murmured. "Well, it's your lucky day, my friend. I'm in a giving mood. I'm going to help you get into your gang."

He turned and went back into his desk, opening the second drawer on the left and withdrawing a stack of marks. He placed them in the gang members hands. The man looked up at him in disbelief.

"No, no. Don't fool yourself into thinking my help comes without a Price, young Lord." Gustav said.

"What is the first rule of the Blood, students?" Gustav asked the class.

"There is always a Price." they answered in unison once more.

He reached further into his power, calling upon his Yellow as he spoke to the gang member once more.

    Yes. Always a Price. Always.

Your Price for my help will be worth a lot more than just a few hundred credits, my boy.” Gustav said, as he thought about how he planned to phrase his questions.

"Children, I want you all to pay attention to how effective Protocol is when wielded properly. People tell you nearly anything you want to know. Please take out your pens and write down his answers to my questions." Gustav said.

"When this is all said and done, all you're going to remember is that the owner of this place paid through the rest of the year and he's not to be bothered again. You'll handle my account personally.

Now who is your leader and what does he do?
    "

Okay, Troller.

Awesome as this is, it doesn't fit the concept I have in mind. I'd like to bank that roll and try again.

Your roll has been banked!

Your new General Random roll...

Weighed by Mother Night...

You've risen from the Darkness twice blessed with an uncut Yellow birthright Jewel, and were gifted with a cut Rose Jewel at your offering.

Congratulations

May I reduce that to White to Yellow with the +10 to Descent,  please?

Thank you! <3
