Distinguishing Features:

Geralt has a scar that runs in a line over left eye.  It is a deep, old scar, that was either never healed or poorly healed, and begins just under his hairline, and ends in the middle of his left cheek.

Personality

Personality:

Geralt has very little in the way of shits to give.  He has seen everything the Territory and its Cities have to offer, at its best and at its worst, and is no longer shocked by the depravity of Blood and Landen alike.  By the same token, he is no longer surprised by the other end of the spectrum; there’s always a hero, always a man or woman of honor, and they always fold when the chips are truly down.  Jaded and worldly, Geralt prefers direct solutions to most if not all of his problems.  This does not mean that he is incapable of subtlety, but that subtlety is just the soft, silk glove covering the iron fist.  Force, naked and pure, is what gets the most results, and application of force requires power.  Geralt came by his power the old fashioned way, he worked for it his entire life.  He earned it, and has little to no patience with anyone that believes they are entitled to anything simply because of their Family or their Jewels.  Morality is a very personal concept to him, and his is unlikely to match anyone else’s.  He watched his Mother struggle all of her life to provide for herself and for him, and in the end, she died anonymously, in a rundown place, only a few steps above penniless, with only her son to mourn her.  Geralt knows that some day, he will die, but when he does, it will be with power in one hand, and a fortune in the other.  People will know the name of Geralt Shade.

Personally, Geralt can be fun to be around.  He absolutely knows how to have a good time, and he's generous with his friends and loyal followers alike.  Lovers are likely to receive lavish gifts, and members of the Syndicate never really have to worry about where their next meal is coming from or who’s going to tend to them if they’re injured or nicked in the line of duty.  Geralt believes that discipline must occasionally give way to pleasure and enjoyment; otherwise what is all the hard work for?  As a Prince, he can hardly completely disengage his analytical mindset, which means he is never as far into his cups as some might believe, but this does not prevent him from enjoying the fruits of his labors.  Everything has a time and a place, or so Geralt will gladly explain, there is a time for business, and a time for pleasure, and he does his very best to make sure the two do not mix, with rare exception.  However, for the leader of the Syndicate, his moods can change as quickly as blowing at a candle, and business has a tendency to overtake pleasure.  However, should business interrupt his good time, well ‘Don’t Shoot The Messenger’ is a metaphor for a reason.

Likes:

  • 1 Craft Lore; For a time, Geralt was raised and trained by his Mother, almost like he was an experiment to the Black Widow.  His lessons were early and harsh, mixing both the lessons and techniques of Craft as well as the faith in Mother Night and the Abyss associated with it.  Despite difficult memories of that time, Geralt enjoys learning more about Craft, particularly as it relates to his Caste or his Mother’s.
  • 2 Hands-On; He doesn’t get to do it too often, because it is a little beneath his station, but he remembers well what it was like to get his hands dirty.  He enjoyed the good work of a caper well done, or the blood and broken bones of a necessary fight or killing.  It is not necessarily the violence he misses, though that is part of it, it is the direct action he is sometimes wistful for.
  • 3 Silence; Sometimes you have to go dark.  You have to sit in silence, in the dark, and really clear your head and think.  He appreciates silence, as well as those that don’t feel the need to chatter simply to fill a silence.  He tends to like it quiet in general, but the stress of his positions causes him to occasionally take time for himself, where he can enjoy undisturbed silence and the embrace of Mother Night--or another goddess.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Being called ‘Shade’; When he was a younger man, this epithet was something he heard often, and even wore with pride.  There are a handful of people still alive that could get away with it, but these days he prefers ‘Mister Shade’, as it shows respect and perhaps a modicum of fear.  A small change, perhaps, but a necessary one.  And no one but the closest friends and lovers should call him by his familiar name, he will answer to Prince Geralt, but Geralt alone without being part of his inner circle will go poorly with him.
  • 2 Competition; Geralt has worked hard to carve out his part of the underworld in the Territory, and indeed, in Courtland.  He is not too greedy, as far as he is concerned, and is content to master this region and nothing else.  It has served to keep his organization tight and logistically agile, as well as loyal.  Everyone profits, and monopoly minimizes risk--but should someone muscle in, he will deal with them as punitively as possible lest someone get a similar idea.
  • 3 Taking Orders; This has been true since his youth, and is probably one of the reasons he labored to take over the Courtland Syndicate.  He hated being told what to do, and even worse, he hated knowing that he had to obey, even when it was in his best interests.  Protocol exists, for example, to maintain the peace, but Geralt didn’t work all these years to bend the knee to some Dark-Jeweled upstart with delusions. Respect will be given, but not obedience, that’s just crazy.
Fears:
  • 1 Betrayal; It happens.  In fact, it is sort of the way this whole criminal underworld boss thing works.  At some point, someone is going to start thinking things would be better with them in charge, rather than Mister Shade, and then they will start making plans to remove old Geralt.  He worries about this, and takes steps to encourage loyalty, rather than the opposite.
  • 2 Appearing Soft; Geralt projects strength and even danger, but the decisions that were easy when he was just muscle coming up the ranks are much harder when you are in charge.  As a Prince, he can see every ounce of wasted potential in a person when they have failed him, and logically understands that punishment should follow suit, sometimes final punishment, but he can see that cost to his organization.  Sometimes, a skill set is too valuable to let go, and yet if he does not--consequences.  It is a difficult balancing act, and an easy beam to fall off of.
  • 3 Whoever Killed His Mother; Geralt believes his Mother was assassinated.  He had seen his Mother make Webs of all kinds, and the likelihood that one somehow backfired seems terribly slim.  He has no idea why she was killed, who she was killed by, or if they would kill him if they knew he existed.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Shadow Manipulation (Forces); Geralt can manipulate shadows, some would say darkness.  He can shroud a room in shadows/darkness, making it difficult to see without vision enhancement, or an opposing amount of Witchfire.  Depending on the strength of the Jewels involved, even those efforts might not be enough to avoid being completely in the dark.
  • 2 Shadow Manipulation (Physical);  Geralt has managed to combine his mastery of shadows with intrinsic use of Physical Craft, possibly related to Telekinetics, that allow him to shape and use the Shadows in a physical way.  Tenebrous tentacles can take hold of things, or even be used to attack.  His own shadow can appear to move about on its own, or change its shape.  Geralt can form the shadows into weapon-like protrusions that have impact, and can be used for attack and offense.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Witchfire; Mister Shade cannot make a light.  He can peel back his own shadows, but he cannot create brightness where there was none before.  He cannot create a fire, light a candle that he has put out, or otherwise manipulate this element.  Whether it be for simple pragmatic and basic use or for combat this simply lies outside of his ability to access or otherwise conjure up.
  • 2 Diplomacy; A Prince Craft that he was never able to master.  Diplomacy requires compromise, a semblance of give and take, and Geralt has never been terribly good at that in Craft or in life.  He prefers to get what he wants via intimidation or force, giving up as little as possible.  It was made him efficient, but less than diplomatic in deed or in Craft.
Life Story

Family:
MotherSheala Vigo -:- Black Widow -:- Summer Sky to Green -:- Born 109 AP
Father:  James _____ -:- Prince -:- Purple Dusk to Broken Green -:- Born 129 AP
Siblings: n/a

History:

Sheala Vigo was a skilled Courtesan for a Red Moon House who supplemented her income with the occasional assassination or the sale of a deadly Web.  She was a highly trained woman, and very little was known about where she came from, though most assume she is a native of the Territory, some suspected otherwise.  Whatever she might have been running from, she left it behind for Courtland and Little Terreille.  Sheala managed to maintain ownership of herself and her time, though she paid a percentage of her earnings to The Red Moon House, who only agreed to do so once they realized that she was something of a draw for their clients.  She accrued enough wealth that she chose to have a child, for some reason selecting a Broken Male from among her clients to be the Father.  He was never informed, nor was he ever granted paternity.

Geralt lived a modest life, at least early on.  Sheala had saved enough to live frugally.  They did not dwell in luxury, and her son was encouraged to solve a wide variety of problems on his own, even if that meant he solved them in the streets.  His Mother was determined to make not only a survivor out of her son, but as hard a man as she could make him.  From the earliest, his lessons were hard, and failures on his part were met with harsh treatment.  Anyone else would have seen it as abusive, but for Sheala it was simply education, as though she were running her own harsh Coven of only two.  He learned to read and write early.  He learned to fight early, at first from her, and then from hard handed instructors she paid.  When he received his Birthright, a strong Summer Sky, his Craft training began in earnest.  If Geralt believed his Mother strict before, he had seen nothing.  She was far more specific and far less forgiving with lessons in the use of his Jewels and Craft.

When he was not subject to his Mother’s harsh lessons, he was otherwise a free range child.  Sheala would simply kick him out of the house, and tell him to go and do something useful, whatever form that took.  She didn’t even ask what he was doing when she did this to him.  She knew, of course, his Mother was a Black Widow.  Geralt had given up on keeping secrets from his Mother somewhere back when he was in the single digits of his age.  She knew that he had fallen in with a gang, and she knew that he had been in several street fights and skirmishes over territory and businesses.  She also knew that he was working for the Syndicate as an enforcer, well, something of an apprentice enforcer and lookout, earning money and reputation.  The money he brought home to his Mother, who let him keep a percentage of it, explaining how she arrived at her calculations.  Then she presented him with a challenge; when would he be taking over the Syndicate?

Geralt was a young man, and taking over had not really occurred to him until his Mother planted that seed.  He was encouraged to use all of his skills, violence with his hands and with Craft, his instincts as a Prince, even original uses of all of the above, ins his quest to be something more than just ‘muscle’.  It was his Mother that encouraged his development of his personalized version of Shadow Manipulation, she saw it as a unique expression of his sense of Craft, and still a success.  The first time he felt certain that his Mother was proud of him was after he killed a man, using both combat training and Craft, piercing his enemy’s heart with a spike of shadow.  It was the first time he experienced true warmth from Sheala, and desiring that feeling again, he continued to pursue advancement in the criminal underworld.  When his Offering came, she was clearly disappointed that he did not come away with a Green, but she simply made him work harder.

There was an urgency that developed in his Mother’s instruction, a sense that Sheala Vigo felt like her time was short.  Geralt never really understood that until after she was gone.  One day he returned to their home to find his Mother dead, bound in one of her own webs, and poisoned to death.  It was only then that all the pieces fell into place, and Geralt realized that his Mother knew this day was coming.  That she had an accident, which was the way the scene was staged, was the only thing that did not ring true to him.  Sheala was killed, he was sure of that, just as sure of that as he was that his Mother saw her death coming.  Without his Mother’s ongoing lessons, Geralt found that he was left with very little.  They did not own their home, and Sheala had spent their money on necessities, books for Geralt’s education, and either tutors or combat instructors for her son’s ongoing development.

His Mother had, in essence, given him all the tools he needed to succeed.  Geralt took the street name of Geralt Shade, just Shade to some, and quickly became a notorious member of Courtland’s criminal underworld.  He climbed the ranks in the Syndicate quickly, his skills as a Prince and his utter ruthlessness made him as efficiently successful as he was feared.  Shade helped to secure Courtland for the Syndicate, ultimately wiping out the competition.  Some were absorbed into the reining organization, but most were brutally murdered to discourage ongoing competition. By the time this happened, Mister Shade was very well thought of, and had a reputation for being even-handed and generous with his subordinates, the exact opposite of the Syndicate leader they worked for.  When Geralt made his play, he was so popular in the organization, that it was a near bloodless coup.  Mister Shade has run the Courtland Syndicate ever since--and expanded on his success.

Character in Play:

Geralt scraped the match on the hearthstone, and watched it burst into its tiny flame.  It was a Landen invention, he knew.  Chaillot?  Somewhere like that.  It was a constant reminder, thanks to his smoking habit, that he could not make Witchfire.  How many times had he been caned for that lack of ability?  Too often, with his mother breaking at least one of her canes across his back.
Despite her harsh upbringing, even as old as he was, Geralt still thought of his Mother, and even missed her.  After all, without her somewhat abusive regiment of physical and spiritual education, he could hardly have taken over the Syndicate when he was a much younger man.  The match went out, and he lit another, this time applying it to the end of his hand-rolled cigarette.  Geralt took a few puffs and stood there in the darkness of his office, sighing as he relaxed a touch, enjoying the shadows and the silence.

He was preparing to light the hearth with a Web his Mother had left behind, when someone knocked.  Geralt growled low and soft, and ignored it.  The veterans of his organization knew better than to trouble him during his scheduled personal time, but sometimes there was new blood that forgot, and had to be cuffed into remembering.  He lit the kindling with his Mother’s trick, and was gently guiding the fire to full life, when there was a second knock.  Geralt loosed an angry sigh, and without turning around, a tentacle of shadow separated from the corner of the room, and threw open the door, where it then reared like a snake in front of the man that had been bold enough to knock a second time.

”M-m-Mister Shade, s-s-sorry to bother you.”  The enforced looked at the tentacle and then at the more distant Prince, uncertain where to keep his eyes.

”That remains to be seen.”  Geralt warned.

”Yeah, um, Logaine’s been found.  Rickard wanted you to know.”

Geralt’s jaw clenched.  He had to agree.  He really did need to know.  The tentacle retreated back into the shadows, and reappeared in triplicate to help Mister Shade put on a coat, and a hat, and hand him a walking stick capped with spider.  He marched briskly out the door, and out to the street, where a carriage was waiting with a driver and a handful of men and women.  Behind him, the enforcer breathed a sigh of relief, and closed the door to the boss’s office, but only after making sure the fire in the hearth was well and truly going.

”Did we recover the goods?”  Mister Shade asked of no one in particular.  One of them would know.

”Yes, the full case.”

”Nothing missing?”

”Full inventory.  Logaine was caught trying to leave Courtland with the case.”

Geralt grunted, lowered his hat over his eyes, and leaned back to consider the situation.

No one disturbed him for the entire ride.
