Personality

Personality:
Garrick is a quiet man. From an early age, he preferred listening to speaking, and this preference has followed him throughout life. As he climbs the Blood hierarchy and becomes more involved in the Courts, he finds that this listening habit has garnered him a lot more than previously imagined. People are willing to tell him all sorts of things, mostly because they believe that he’s harmless. And not speaking tends to let him overhear enough conversations to either get him in trouble for knowing or get someone else in trouble for admitting.

Regardless, Garrick carries himself with a quiet air of someone solidly grounded. He attributes a lot of this to finding his Queen early on in his life but, being a Prince, he probably would have exhibited this anyway. Garrick loves to go over situations and connections in his mind. While giving his attention to a conversation, there’s no doubt that he’s also considering where this person or this piece of information fits within the larger scheme of things. Patterns are a particular favorite thing of his to find -- they’re predictable and thus he has less factors to track.

Within the whirlwind that is his Queen, Garrick livens up a bit. That calm quietude dissipates and there’s a set to his shoulders and eyes that indicate how much he is watching. He smiles more in Diana’s presence because he knows how much appearances mean to her but also because he feels more at ease with her than anyone else. He talks more, joining into conversations without being prompted. He only uses formality with her when he’s nervous or concerned for her well-being and that’s usually only in public. Alone together, they drop all titles and laugh like kids. He’s less inclined to stick up for himself but he’ll jump the gun protecting someone he loves. And someone insulting his Queen always gets under his skin.

When not in a social situation, Garrick tends to seek out solitude and places that lend to it, like libraries, coffee shops, and shorelines. He tends to think a lot, both about the world larger than him and the world he inhabits, and he’s at an age where he’s trying to figure out where he fits in all of that. Hence all of the thinking. He knows that Diana doesn’t judge him for his sexual preferences (it’s a running joke they have that they both have the same bad taste) but he doesn’t feel the need to let everyone know that he’s into men.

Likes:
  • 1 - Seashores. He’ll take the quiet lapping of a lake or river if that’s his only option but Garrick loves the seashore. The susurrus sound of the waves, with their white caps and arching crashes. The warm sand that, yes, gets into everything, but shimmers like little crystals in the sun. The calls of the birds and the fins of the fish. He loves the ebb and flow of this environment because its rhythms resonate with something deep in his life.
  • 2 - Dancing. Since he’s so restrained and reserved for most of his public life, Garrick takes the chances he can get to dance. When he’s dancing, he feels free of social constraints and his mind. He needs to move and if his stress level is particularly high, he’ll seek out a dance club for the night to grind out his frustrations.
  • 3 - Learning things. Garrick seems to be a fountain of information, probably because he soaks up data like a sponge. Facts, fiction -- doesn’t matter. Garrick likes to learn. It gives his mind something new to mull over and something to toss into conversations when needed.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Loud places. Garrick has a slight problem processing conversations as is. Whenever he’s in a loud place, it gets a lot harder to filter out what he needs to hear versus what he doesn’t. He might be convinced to go to a large gathering or a music festival but he will try to remain on the periphery so that he can still hear normally. The only exception to this is when his stress level is high and he goes dancing at a club -- he’s actively trying to drown out conversations then.
  • 2 - Paperwork. Organization is fine but paperwork just seems to bog everything down. He knows that this dislike is weird for his Caste but he really just finds paperwork to be inefficient and dragging. Plus, it can easily be lost or destroyed. He prefers to organize everything in his mind, keep to verbal contracts, and keep the use of paper to a minimum.
  • 3 - Being judged/considered weird. Garrick knows he’s quiet, he knows he can be a little bit of a dichotomy. He feels different from most others at some level and most days he’s fine with that. But if someone judges his lifestyle or his hobbies, it leaves him in the awkward place of wanting to defend himself but not wanting to cause conflict as well.
Fears:
  • 1 - Losing Diana. Garrick would rather lose a member of his family before losing his Queen. She has been a pivotal part of his life -- his anchor, his lodestone -- and without her, he knows he would feel absolutely adrift and apart. This fear manifests as tension to his shoulders and eyes when Diana is surrounded by unfamiliar people.
  • 2 - Getting dragged into something illegal. Garrick is a pretty upstanding citizen sort of guy. He tries to live honorably and do well for others. But he knows that Little Terreille is a hotbed of illegal activity and as much as he tries to avert his gaze, it’s there. It’s only a matter of time before it finds its way into his life and he spends a great amount of time worrying that once he crosses that line, even a small one, he’ll never get out of it again.
  • 3 - Being Broken or maimed. Without the strength that he has, Garrick can’t protect Diana like she needs. It doesn’t matter that she outranks him in Jeweled strength -- it’s a male’s right to serve and the power physical or psychic power he has, the better he can serve. Garrick’s fear of being Broken has led to him conserving his Jeweled strength and avoiding conflict if possible.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Jewel Management. Garrick is very careful on psychic expenditure in general (work smarter, not harder) but his strength in this is how he has learned to boost his Rose with little drops of his Purple Dusk to give a spell a quick, efficient punch of power without draining him.
  • 2 - Extended Duration Spells. As a side effect of learning Jewel Management, Garrick has figured out how to apply this quick punch of power to duration spells, which means that they don’t take as much Jeweled power to fuel.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Sensing Spells. Garrick realized early on that he was weak in this area. He didn’t understand why but a Craft weakness here has led to a hyper awareness at times, as though he could somehow make up for it.
  • 2 - Contracts. Because Garrick tends to rely on his mind and not on paperwork, as well as assume other people have honor in their hearts, Garrick tends to be poor at crafting contracts. His wording allows for plenty of loopholes, which is another reason why he dislikes paperwork.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Lianne Merritt, Yellow to Summer Sky witch (age 42, born 152 AP)
Father: Tobias Merritt, Rose to Opal Warlord (age 47, born 147 AP)
Siblings: brother Easton, Birthright Purple Dusk Warlord (age 17, born 177 AP)

Queen: Diana Reis, Birthright Opal Queen (age 19, born 174 AP)

History:
The Merritt family are an established line of clothiers and textile suppliers, starting three or four generations back. So Garrick grew up in business -- learning dyes and weights, counting coins, and cataloging textiles. His family made certain that all of their members worked every aspect of the business at some point. Not because they didn’t have reliable workers -- no, it was so that the leadership of the company knew what it was like to work at the bottom and how to take care of employees and customers. That sort of experience grounded Garrick immensely. He remembers learning important life lessons from father and grandfather, as well as playing hide and seek with his little brother in clothes racks and factories.

But of course, even in the midst of a Rose Birthright ceremony, there was school. And with school came extracurricular activities. Garrick showed no interest in sports or anything physical but obviously needed some outlet for the growing energy of a boy. Later, Garrick would learn that his father had gotten the idea for putting Garrick into a painting class from one of his suppliers, a man named Ezra Reis. It was in this painting class that a pre-pubescent Garrick would meet the woman who would change his life forever: he met his Queen, Diana.

As he got older, he would joke that she was the only woman to ever turn his head, but for most retellings, he kept it simple: seeing her walking into that brightly lit studio for the first time, clutching her sketchpad and brushes tightly, ready to take on the class and everyone in it. She never got good at painting but they both continued the lessons because...well, how else were they going to spend time with each other with such schedules?

Garrick remembers his teenage years as a time of balancing and juggling. Between learning the family business, discovering his sexuality, outings with his Queen (especially after the breaking of her father), Garrick felt like he was constantly going from one place to another. It became clear to him how badly the brutal assault of Diana’s father affected her and that, in turn, affected him. His Offering wasn’t what it could have been, and he’d never be as dark as she was, but at least it was a Purple Dusk. Still, he isn’t sure what he’s going to be doing with his life, since it has always been about the family business, and as the time nears when Diana takes up her own Court, he feels more torn.

Character in Play:

The snow, dulled and dirtied, still crunched under foot as he strode down the street. Normally, by this hour, it would have been cleared from the street, yet for some reason, it lingered, markedly recording how many feet had tread across it over the last few days.

Garrick fiddled with his fingerless gloves as he walked, his gaze roaming left to right to left casually as he took in the sights. Merchants, mostly fishermen, were hauling their catch on to the docks. Luckily, Garrick was used to the oily smell, though he did tip his face down just a little to avoid catching wind of it. He knew it would still stick to his coat but his family’s factory had ways of dealing with unpleasant odors.

He was here looking for the captain of a certain ship but as he passed berth after berth, he noticed someone he did not expect to see at the docks, speaking with the captain of a ship definitely not from Little Terreille. Actually, the only odd thing about that interaction was that it didn’t appear as though the ship had anything to unload, so why was one of the First Circle for Queen Marchesa Talbot just...here?

Garrick was about to cast it from his mind, discard it futile pursuit, when he noticed the name of the ship: The Firn. It was not misspelled. Garrick remembered that a firn was a type of glacial granular ice. And judging by the looks of the crewman that Lady Talbot’s Warlord was speaking with, glacial also applied to his features. A Glacian ship then. Interesting. Not unusual in Little Terreille but something about it still drew Garrick’s interest.

He would mention it to Diana later. There were far too many rumors circulating about Lady Talbot and her dealings but hardly any of them factual. This could possibly be another one of those instances.

Yet, as he walked towards his legitimate business with the captain of the Dawn Forger, Garrick had a sinking feeling that all of those little things that seemed just a hair odd were going to turn out to be much bigger things eventually.
