Appearance

Play By: Michelle Dockery
Distinguishing Features: Buttons. One could not possibly have too many upon a sleeve, the back of a gown, or hat. Especially in the most stylish mode possible. Almost never is Elisabeth seen without a hat and gloves, unless of course in a variety of delicate situations, though even within the quiet of a bedchamber, gloves might still be worn for ... presence.

Curling, deep brown hair that holds touches of a rich auburn in its hue is worn typically respectfully bound, though when loose falls well past the woman's trim waist. Willowy does her figure appear, while the warm brown of her gaze seems practically unknowable even to those that she would allow defending her life. Smiles are seldom a gift; the Black Widow's psychic scent is an elusive one but in lingering near one might take note of the faintest hint of vanilla and lavender. The seductive nature of Elisabeth's Caste reveals itself in the manner of her speech, appreciation of the subtle. Soft, delicate freckles cover the woman's face when not hidden by Craft-touched cosmetics, which is most of the time. Whether they are elsewhere isn't something one ought to ask a lady, is it?

Personality

Personality: Controlled and Black Widow do not often mesh together in the best of ways, however, distinct training and knowledge where Elisabeth would walk in her life from her tiniest understandings of logic have made this possible. Beyond this, the knowledge that there are others that can and will both defend and fight for her defence, honour, and especially when beyond her own Jewel Rank allow the runaway Duchess a sense of peace from within which she may slowly spin her webs, both in a figurative sense as well as the literal. If there is one thing Elisabeth might be known for it is finding out information.

Intel. Perhaps something of an irony given the deep unlikelihood of first, ever speaking of herself or confirming the slightest idea regarding her own life. It is one of the ways that being a Black Widow that knowledge is a forefront interest. If it can be known, the Lady Carlisle will find it whether by spreading her own means about or paying someone to tell her the information. It helps to have such a ... not calm demeanour, but disciplined one, and with deeply trained patience that so many tend to spill their secrets, seeking to be soothed.

There are the great beauties of the territory or realm, in neither of these places does this particular Widow feel she walks, even though a considerable modicum is enjoyed being spent upon the detail of gowns and hats. Especially hats and the most stunning pins and accoutrements one can obtain in the very cosmopolitan city of Goth. If the Lady Elisabeth is lovely, it is presented in the patience she exudes that wraps through and around a deeply, professionally and safely restrained presence of the Black Widow that she is. It is in this particular way that as a member of the Unchained, she is able to assist her ... rather rougher and tumble partners gain access to doors that would otherwise be sealed shut to them. After all, there are certain things even in being Blood that doors will not open with brute force, but with a perfectly placed smile when one would rather commit murder and be done with the task.

Elisabeth, called the Duchess with some irony because she is or was one (depending on the asker, her estranged husband would firmly say is) despite having walked away from most of that life, has two very favourite words that could well make most that deal with her sigh with annoyance until realising she is almost always right, and her instincts are spot on, even for a Black Widow: the words wait, and no. Among her acquaintances, Silver Thrax has had a litany of snarls around said two words. Indeed, given her number of secrets, one might wonder why she has not been dubbed Shadow instead. No one, and indeed, no one, is aware of this woman's past, and keeping said truths hidden is practically part and parcel of her personality - to be as secretive as possible.

Likes:
  • 1 Quiet Evenings: A pleasant, roaring fireplace with a game of chess pleases Elisabeth immensely with those she trusts; one should never play such a revealing game with an enemy, after all. The soft moments when Goth is as close to rest as one could ever find it, the middle of the night, the evening of a tavern that is mostly full and lacking for once of a bar fight. These moments are ones that the Lady Carlisle lives for, where she might take a mental accounting of what has gone past, and what might yet become reality. Such evenings are excellent for reflection upon the self, one's surroundings and those held close along with those that could spell one's end.

  • 2 Musical Recitals: Musical recitals are wondrous for the music, but moreover for making and breaking allies. No one goes to the Opera, says the Duchess to actually listen to the beautiful music. They go to be seen and to have more. You'll never find the altruistic darling in the best box seats, nay. It is the schemer that has and always will purchase the most. The one with the loose tongue one needs to have on one's side.

  • 3 Romantic Novellas: Ah, novellas, where the gentleman is always better in a book than in real life. If her husband had been of actual use beyond his name, perhaps she might have remained with him and the children she practically died to give him. Real romance, she feels does not exist, and if it does, the work it takes would come from a rare beauty that all sides wish to bring forth. But sometimes when no one is watching Lady Carlisle likes to pretend that such a thing would be possible for her, too. It is in a book at least, and the shorter and the more sex, the better.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Card Cheaters: Elisabeth adores card games as they are both a wonderful source of intel on those playing as well as the lie of the land as much as the people living. Cheaters that cheat for the sake of doing so, however, annoy the Black Widow intensely. In short, if one is going to defraud someone, it ought to have a purpose, not just watching the world burn for inane, insane laughter and kicks. Tendencies such as this often are most apparent to Lady Carlisle in games of chance with patterns. Such activity sets Elisabeth's Widow senses in motion, and thus someone that cannot be fixed or read is very deeply an irritation.

  • 2 Pointless Roughness: Wickedness feels wonderful at times, just to let free a little of the darkness that curls even within the fairly lighter jewelled Black Widow. Fairly, because in truth even a lady of the Blood with a Purple Dusk Offering is still akin to a deity for the Landen with no power. With a deepened preference for orderly matters for following precedents and percentages, useless roughhousing that offers no social gain, nor wealth doesn't exactly make Elisabeth angry, but more she is likely to turn her well-born head away in disappointment. Blew up a tavern because one person made another angry? Boring.

  • 3 The Other Gangs of Goth: Those other people. The vile ones that would do the unthinkable to the denizens of Goth that have no say, regardless of Jewel strength. While it is technically true that any "gang" is bad news, Elisabeth is somewhat blind to the fact that the Unchained are not really that much better in terms of following the laws, the give and take among those appointed Courts. But what "hero" good or even anti in terms of 'doing the right thing' actually cares to look in the mirror for truth? Lady Carlisle certainly won't. So the other gangs should go; the destruction of the Hell-Lords was good in her mind. The rest can take a fiery end in addition.

    Fears:
  • 1 Past Lives: Secrets. Oh, the lady does have ever so many, even a whole other life in another territory, a family, that she loves, not that it would be easy to get the words to part her lips. Her husband is not a weak man, either in terms of strength in a political sense, nor jewels. She'd rather not go back to being his little wife while he runs around and fucks everything with legs. So, she won't. Or at least that'll be the case so long as no one can dig deep enough into her past. Thankfully, most denizens of Little Terreille won't think to look to Dharo, nor be able to unwind the tangles to get at the truth. It's one of the few things she'd consider killing for herself rather than having someone else do the work for her: her little ones. It keeps her up at night, wondering if her son and daughter miss her and if their father even pays enough attention to them at all. But she cannot go back. Not even for them. Truth hurts, doesn't it?

  • 2 Assassins: While the Unchained has plenty of firepower, growing up in Dharo taught the daughter of a Duke and wed to another that there's always someone stronger, faster, smarter, and better. Everyone has a mark on their back, she knows this as a skilled Black Widow. Somewhere, she expects that she's made someone enraged enough that they've marked her out, and there's only just time enough to wait for an end. Yet it is not her death she fears, as being short-lived among a number of half long-lived makes one comfortable with mortality. It is her children not growing to keep that legacy she has in the back of her mind for them, that the rot at the centre of what it means to have power at all will snuff out that innocence.

  • 3 Lord Black: The man, the mystery? If it is a man at all. While some doubt that Lord Black exists, Lady Carlisle does not. She saw a great change coming for Morr's Court but misunderstood what her Webs were trying to tell her; making the assumption that the Court was going to rise in power. On the one hand, it did rise in power after a Black Jewel obliterated it. She'd missed her appointment that day due to having a sore throat from being in a bar filled with a tad too much smoke, and instinct telling her to take it easy that day, and to go the next. The waves of dreadfully dark power that woke her from a deep sleep that night are ones she'll never forget. It means only much more that she'll follow Silver Thrax quite likely to her end, so long as its a good one. It doesn't change the shivers that roll along her spine in seeing the tall spires of the buildings that are replacing what was old for the new.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Social Craft: Elisabeth's primary skill with Social Craft is to soothe and persuade others in to either doing as she might wish them to, but as well works with convincing the listener that what she is explaining to them is precisely what they wanted to hear or do in the first place. For those that are lesser gifted than she is in Jewels, it is strongest, while for those at the same or deeper ranked the Lady Carlisle's Craft could be much compared to a skilled, persuasive orator.

  • 2 Compulsions: Elisabeth's compulsions work best when she is gently pushing away at the will of the bearer, rather than directly and forcibly changing the desires. Said craft skill works best when woven into a Web of some type and placed upon the person directly to wear away at the senses over an extended period of time, rather than at the moment.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Power Bolts: Though she is capable of them, Lady Carlisle's power bolts are fairly weak and can only stun or deprive a person of consciousness at best. Though she has often tried honing this skill it is to date the furthest the Black Widow has gotten, as if her other more thoughtful skills have made her somewhat inept at casting furious offensive craft on the fly.

  • 2 Most Defensive Craft: Akin to Power Bolts, though Elisabeth is certainly able to shield herself and hide in plain sight if needed, she cannot effectively within a roughened battle actually defend from strong foes even at equal or slightly less than her Jewel rank. When she does try, her reserves are swiftly depleted, due to a lack of understanding as well as advanced training in this specialty.

    History:

While her father was a indeed a ranking Duke and had been given claim of his daughter along with the remaining seven children Prince Ashworth fathered, his only place in the lives of his children was a gift of a considerable monetary inheritance which took care of all the training required of the Blood in a general sense not to end up in a chain of violence and murdering left and right. As such, the Birthright of Elisabeth Carlisle was a pleasant matter with the receiving of a rare, and precious Uncut Rose.

The Ashworth estate itself had no heirs and as such, at the Prince's death, passed back to the control of the Territory Queen unless his eldest son was to marry, as such things are oft come to pass. The only son the Prince fathered had chosen to live well away in the city of Goth, and none of the remainders of the man's very scattered children were fit to inherit his titles and graces. That said, it still meant that Elisabeth's life as the daughter of a very talented Red Moon House Lady by her own choice lived a very charmed life as a youngster.

Wanting for nothing, not even affection gave the Lady Carlisle a bright, and pleasant outlook upon life, even considering her early planned betrothal to another Duke, rich in the family lineage, but horribly poor in terms of ready cash. It made for an excellent ideal. Yet, these stories seldom turn out as one might wish.

Elisabeth's life and early Basic Craft as well as deportment education, and general learning whirled by; her once-beloved mother was ecstatic at the idea of a daughter that gained a snake tooth at the age of thirteen and the bloom of the young woman's first hints of a deeper sensuality than the average Blood - which were Jewelless - could enjoy. A Caste and middling Jewel ensured Elisabeth's success as much as her lineage did; through her mother, she had been descended from a family of very wealthy merchants turned to the rank of Vison through male ancestors. It offered connections and at a minimum, a distance from the usual cutthroat political grasping that is beautifully common within Dharo.

It offered the young woman plenty of male protectors to ensure that her Virgin Night at age nineteen was not fraught with too much politics that might leave her broken and dependent upon others. Instead, it was a simple matter for her long betrothed, Aloysius Brently, a Green Jewelled Descended Warlord Prince, to take up the honour of tending to his soon to be wife. While not entirely awkward given the depth of Elisabeth's interest in carnal display at least in private, the efforts came a long measure toward ensuring the betrothed couple, rather distant in age from each other, had at least the sensual to smooth matters between them.

However, rather than an immediate marriage, Elisabeth's education continued at her mother's demand and Prince Brently's frustration. It was said learning that no doubt made the eventual marriage that much easier to stomach for the part of the Black Widow. Her tutelage continued until the age of twenty when Elisabeth had her Offering. A swift and elegant wedding followed weeks later; and before her twenty-first birthday, the new 'Duchess' had fallen pregnant given vigorous efforts by her husband, who had grown well tired of waiting to have what he considered his, both the fortune and the woman herself.

Early on, Elisabeth's marriage was reasonably pleasant, filled with parties and get-togethers of local Aristocratic Blood. Yet, in terms of personality, it began to become exceedingly apparent that the new Duchess by marriage and her husband, Aloysius did not match. A sharp tempered man and perhaps less so by simple fact of lighter jewels, less sharp but certainly stubborn woman found themselves bound in any arrangement that pleased neither of the parties while the single exception of the children that Lady Elisabeth had borne.

Once the twins were outside of the baby years, the free-spirited manner in which she wanted for the children to learn was the precise opposite of what the Lord Brently demanded. It offered for a deepening of conflict once Elisabeth gained control of the remainder of her father's monetary fortune; despite the known fact that the people of the Blood were matriarchal, greed especially spurred her husband to try and remove her funds and independence, until Lady Carlisle could take no more of it, and left despite being forced and threatened to leave her children behind. During the same period of her marriage, further training among the Black Widow's arts continued, with a greater emphasis upon information gathering and the more subtle manners in which Social Craft might be linked with the mental discipline and tending of gentle, and sometimes less so, compulsions.

To be clear of course, it was not that her husband was truly worth turning into a red stain upon the wooden floors he trod in their once pleasant home but taught a lesson. Thus, Elisabeth's movement to Little Terreille, while painful in the expectation that she might never see her children again, her freedom was worth far more. Elisabeth's first time in the both cosmopolitan and oft gang filled territory was being assigned to one of the District Courts in a Second Circle for a few years. In that time, she spent it not only solidifying contact back in her native Dharo but also those within Goth.

It was during the tail end of her required service as a new resident that she again met a very dark jewelled Healer, bearing the Grey, named Silver Thrax, having run into the woman during the latter part of her escape from Dharo. As a reasonably gifted Black Widow and given that both women were well used to emotional pain and despite the incredible aloof and cool nature of Elisabeth herself, they managed to make a supporting statement toward that of unexpected friendships.

Having been offered a place among Silver's band of somewhat misfits, initially, Elisabeth declined, despite having a considerable interest. Given time and knowledge gain due to the fairly consistent strict observance of those moving in and out of the Territory, particularly since the violence often went entirely unchecked, Elisabeth eventually placed herself among those of the Unchained. Within a year however of remaining with the Unchained, and showing herself to be a punctual woman to the minute for every job assigned, her disappearance without even the slightest word while it might not have alarmed most, it was eventually Silver that discovered Elisabeth returned to her home and confined there by her husband, who had sent word that their son was ill with a request for the Black Widow to return.

Truth was that their son Addison was indeed ill, but it was not too long after the young man's recovery that the reasons why Elisabeth had left became clear given the fact that she was locked within her quarters by her husband's Green Jewelled shields. Of course, Elisabeth's reaction to being "rescued" by Silver and thus her secrets being revealed to at least that woman: extreme wealth, being a mother barred from her children, an actual Duchess by marriage explaining the annoyance of said nickname, and the social status that explained the Black Widow's incredible sense for knowing people, or being quickly able to discover useful facts about them.

Silver pounding her Warlord Prince of a husband into his place and making it clear that not only would Elisabeth not do as he wished, but he would be required to allow her to both visit her children in addition to living her own life as she pleased. It made the choice of returning with Silver to Little Terreille a simple and very easy one. Since, it has been a few years of reasonably lucrative work with the Unchained, particularly in terms of information.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

Dark, unfathomable eyes lowered toward the teacup balanced between lean fingers while slowly the Duchess sipped the bitter brew. It was a terrible idea in terms of execution and she was certainly within a margin of a few percentage points that she had any chance of getting out of her own home. It was a prison, despite the beauty of the space. Every bit of silk or delicate pair of shoes were all traps.

Assuredly, it would have been less an irritant for the Lady Elisabeth if her husband, Prince Brently would simply ask that she remain a time. Then, at least arrangements for the job that she was now late for could have been salvaged. Instead, the Duchess was sitting as calm as one could manage in such an irritating situation, gently pulling a brush through her daughter's hair. The curls were a soft, deep brown whirling in rich ringlets.

Both children were dressed in bedclothes, while she wore her travelling dress, midnight with grey trim that swept to the floor. Elisabeth's son remained resting upon the bed, who was better, but still relatively tired, which was evident by the way the young man was completely still in his slumber. She had managed to get a note out to Little Terreille some days ago, but given how tightly mail and correspondence were controlled upon entering the place she had once called home, expecting and receiving a response was unlikely and yet ...

The softness of the sound of hair being neatened halted; Lady Elisabeth lifted her daughter and placed the girl in her own bed, the motion stirring the young one slightly. In a rare display of outward emotion, the Black Widow kissed her daughter's cheek. In the moments that it took for Elisabeth to cross the room and stand to walk out to stand upon the balcony for a small taste of peacefulness and quiet. However, that quiet did not last. Suddenly followed once a whirlpool of air with a sense of very, very dark but familiar sense of jewel strength that eventually allowed the smallest of smiles to curl the Lady Carlisle's mouth.

In the passing of moments, seeing the Green Shields she'd been trapped inside shatter under the force Silver placed upon them caused the Lady Elisabeth to laugh, the tones bright, warm and sweet, which was enough the antithesis of her typical behaviour to cause one to watch for some moments. "As you can see, I did not try to be late. You, however, are later than I hoped you might be. I have but two requests. Do not kill or maim him. Someone has to watch the children that have an emotional tie, after all."

For the Duchess, it was a considerable emotional thank you.
