Distinguishing Features: Delaney is a true Little Terreillian mutt, with curly, dark golden hair and blue eyes that testify to her short-lived origins, but also a dusky cast to her skin that suggests some long-lived blood somewhere in her family history.

Personality

Personality:
Delaney is, at her core, an opportunist. Unlike so many of the less fortunate in Little Terreille, she grew up amidst a family unit that was strong and relatively loving. Many kids of the cohort with which she grew up were less blessed, and Delaney did not suffer from the same ignorance that plagued many of those who grew up sheltered by love and (relative) safety. Rather than softening her towards the world at large, however, this succeeded only in teaching Delaney how much she stood to lose if the winds changed. She responded by holding on tightly to what she could, and working her ass off to try and build some kind of security for everything else.

She cares very deeply for her family, even though they’ve had some incredibly painful disagreements about the choices she’s made for her life (her father in particular was vehemently opposed to her entangling herself with the Hell Lords). Still, she draws strength from their love and support to this day.  Delaney is an odd mix of a hard worker and a fussy woman who enjoys being spoiled. There’s a time and place for everything, and she’s learned over the years that committed effort towards hard work when it’s appropriate allows for more spoiling and decadence later. Gifted with a pretty and deceptively youthful face, Delaney rarely has trouble wheedling all sorts of concessions out of her patrons. This is no doubt helped by her innate charisma, a facet of her that her family insists she inherited from her father. She can light up a room with her joy, or pull sympathy from the hardest of hearts, when she’s motivated. This is as much skill as it is natural disposition, as she’s learned to wield it with intention.

Likes:
  • Being underestimated. Delaney plays up her youthfulness on purpose. She looks quite a bit younger than her years, and she uses this and a practiced skill at acting to give the impression of someone less experienced and more naive. She has found that it often sets people at ease and makes them easier marks. She also enjoys the flip side of this, when she has an occasion to get dolled up and look her age. She enjoys surprising people.
  • Violet Kaos. Violet embodies the no-nonsense businesswoman that Delaney wishes she was. She watched over the years as Violet ran the brothels with an iron fist tipped in flawless nails, and has long envied the woman’s confidence and competence.
  • Secrets. Delaney loves few things as well as when she leads people into confessing things to her that they wouldn’t normally share with others. It makes her feel powerful, and though she rarely has cause to pull any of these secrets out into the light of day, she nonetheless keeps a little arsenal of them to make herself feel empowered.

Dislikes:
  • The New Regime. Delaney lost alot of friends and sisters when the new Territory Court decided to do away with the Hell Lords via wholesale slaughter. She’s not blind to the fact that the gang was responsible for some toxic shit, but in her mind alot of innocents died along with the guilty.
  • People looking down on her White. For most of her life she didn’t HAVE a Jewel. That she has one now is a tremendous boon for her, so much so that she doesn’t care if it’s the lightest one possible. It’s still afforded her more power than she could comprehend before, and she hates when people dismiss it out of hand.
  • Sharing the spotlight. At the end of the day, Delaney’s pretty self-centered in most cases. She will not work group affairs if she can avoid it at all, because all of the Sirens have their talents and she hates not being the immediate focus of a given room.

Fears:
  • Breaking her Jewel. Delaney spent most of her life without a Jewel, and was therefore not careful with how roughly she let herself be treated. She hates that now she feels like she has to be careful; she doesn’t know exactly what it would take to break her Jewel via sex but she’s terrified it’ll happen accidentally.
  • Harm coming to her family. Delaney isn’t the only one of her family to be involved with the gangs, though not everyone knows it. What’s more, even normal court intrigues can prove dangerous to those not careful enough. Delaney depends heavily on her family for support and would be crushed if anything happened to any one of them.
  • Being Manipulated. As much as Delaney loves her White, she understands that the people she’s servicing are exponentially more powerful than she is. Every one of them has the power to make her do, feel, even think anything they want, and she secretly fears being manipulated this way and being oblivious to it. She’s constantly investing in trinkets and webs to help make her feel like her mind is safer, with varying results as far as effectiveness.

Craft Strengths:
  • Item Enhancement. Delaney has learned how to imbue mundane items with a tether that links them to other Craft. She can purchase a web from a Black Widow to help shield her mind, for instance, and using this finesse she can tie that web to a ring that changes color when the web is breached.
  • Jewel Management. Ever the opportunist, Delaney won’t miss out on an ounce of Craft available to her. She has devoted actual study and experiments towards finding the limits of her White. Though she’s very careful about not pushing herself too far, she can successfully eek more juice safely out of her Jewel than most.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Healing Craft. Many of the girls who work for Violet have been taught basic triage as a precaution, but Delaney has never be able to accomplish this in any sense, not even with focused and extended study. She must rely on others or on healing brews to take care of any injuries she suffers - an occasion that’s not exactly rare.
  • Vanishing Craft. Delaney’s psychic cabinet did not seem to grow at all with her descent to the White. She is still limited to vanishing only small personal items, just as she was when without a Jewel.

History:
Socially speaking, the Shaws have never been extraordinary people, really. Wedged firmly into the all but silent middle class of Little Terreille, they were neither wealthy enough to be influential nor poor enough to be on the street. The father of the family was a Blood male, a skilled carpenter with more charisma than sense who managed to charm the young witch of one of the families for which he worked. His skilled trade and his bride’s service in a low-level court were enough to meet the needs of even their full family, though there was never much in the way of money left over at the end of the month. The baby of the bunch, Delaney was the only one of the children to not receive a Jewel at her Birthright ceremony, though she inherited enough of her father’s glowing charm that she still never lacked for attention. As she grew older she wasn’t entirely free of envy over her siblings’ abilities with Craft, but Delaney made an opportunity out of her lack and milked her Jewel-less status for extra concessions with the skill of a born con artist. No one, not even Delaney, would deny that she was spoiled rotten as a child, but she was sweet enough in general that no one really seemed to mind. Her father in particular was enamored of her, and she of him. They shared a bond in their lack of Jewels and their proximity to the living gods who were their family, and she spent many a day “helping” him while he worked, handing him hammers and holding onto boards to steady them while he cut them.

For Delaney, growing up was a balancing act between running the streets with her friends (of which she had many; she was just that type), relishing the reckless freedom of youth, and keeping out of the way of the dreaded gangs that all but owned the inner city. Politics and court matters were well above Delaney’s head, even as her siblings grew to join their mother in court service, one by one. Still, it was known that when certain groups of people showed up somewhere, you disappeared if you didn’t want to get pulled into trouble. Both of Delaney’s parents shared a blend of fear and distaste for the gangs, and preached the same to their children. When rebellion set itself into Delaney’s heart, as it did so often for growing young women, it was therefore almost natural that she wound up tangled up with one of the gangs her father so despised. For a few years there was painful tension and fighting amongst them, but during that time Delaney went to work for The Madame. Delaney was no stranger to the touch of men, and was looking for some way to corral some sense of personal power. Her natural charisma and fondness for cultivating attention helped the art of seduction come easily to her, and she was a quick study when someone took the time to teach her. She not only enjoyed learning to be a companion for the clients of the brothels, she found she was good at it. She grew incredibly fond of the demanding but ever-professional Violet Kaos, who helped reinforce a young girl’s spine with the steel of real confidence, and helped aggravate an already formidable sense of ambition in the witch. Delaney adored her enough that when she eventually made her Offering and received a Jewel, it was to the Madame that she ran first in her excitement.

When the Hell Lords were obliterated, Violet helped her girls to flee in order to protect them. Delaney didn’t want to leave. Even if she’d been willing to abandon Violet, she was still tied strongly to her family, who were all knitted into the fabric of Goth. She refused to leave, and she and Violet eventually got into a fight over the matter, with the Madame being less than kind about her words. Hurt and uncertain, Delaney returned home, where her family all but kept her sequestered for the same fears that had moved Violet. Suddenly bereft of the life she’d built for herself, Delaney wallowed for a little while in misery and sulking before she realized no one was going to fix things for her. She sought out some of her old clients and worked out deals with them one on one in the wake of the Hell Lords’ passing, and has managed to collect enough work to keep herself provided for.

Character in Play:
Of course it was raining. It was fitting, Delaney thought, as she stood in the street and looked up at the house before her. Underneath her umbrella, her curls were perfectly coiffed (at least they had been, before she’d left; the damp air was a challenge, now). Her makeup was heavy but perfectly applied, pure artistry, really. Her dress was tailored to fit her, her long coat was sleek and flattering. Her heels, currently soaking up rainwater that would undoubtedly stain, had cost her more marks than she’d ever admit to her family. They wouldn’t understand. She’d been living in a different world from them, and it hurt to be standing there in front of that house again, with nowhere else to go.

The front door opened. Framed there against the backlight of the interior was the familiar shape of her father. He paused in the doorway, squinting through the rain at her. She could tell when he recognized her; he stiffened in surprise. There was a pause, though she could only guess what he was thinking. His baby girl, standing in the rain dressed like a woman grown.. what was she doing? But that pause was only a second, and then he stepped back, the door opening further, and gestured with some agitation for her to come inside as though he couldn’t understand why she was standing there like she was. That was all it took, and Delaney’s composure crumbled. Her lip trembled and sudden tears spilled down her cheeks. Not only was he not refusing her, but he couldn’t understand why she’d hesitated at all. That was the difference between family and friends, she thought. It wasn’t just a house that she was standing there staring at - that she approached now with tears in her eyes and a hurry in her step. It was home.

I approve of her mentions of me, even if she was a stubborn twit who refused safety when it was offered.
