Personality

Personality:

Darien is full of funny anecdotes and enough crass stories to fill a night of drinking and debauchery several times over. He’s polite, but cool, with new people, expecting them to either stay awhile and listen or excuse themselves and find something better to do. He’s fine with the former and not offended by the latter. Those who stick around learn that Darien remembers lots of little details and he knows the best places (and people) to hang out with in any Province. Several people who expected Prince Embers to be a passing acquaintance in their lives were surprised to find a long-term friend willing to listen to their troubles and then help raise their spirits afterwards. Darien smiles when he receives that kind of praise.

Sometimes, he really is their friend.

He’s spent most of his life being (literally) spit on, pissed on, and treated like the lowest form of life by his father’s family, people he'd hoped to build a family relationship with after his mother's passing. But his father’s wife and her sons took great pains to make him an outsider in his own home, forcing the young man to choose his friends from among the criminals, thieves, and whores of Little Terreille. The streets taught Darien the value of community and gave him his first taste of a what a real family felt like.

He’s been building his own family ever since.

Deep down, Darien hungers to belong to something greater than himself and find people who accept him for who he is. The Unchained are a source of stability and acceptance that he’ll never admit to needing in his life because that's far too real for him. He cares about each member of the Unchained individually and as a part of the larger group.

Yet Darien is a hard man to satisfy, both personally and professionally. The Unchained work so well together because they understand that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Better still, they understand that all of them need to be whole in order to contribute.

He always runs two other agendas in addition to the one he mentions aloud; all three are made to serve a fourth that he keeps close to his chest. Helping himself helps the Unchained, allowing him to provide less reputable resources when necessary. This helps him feel like he's contributing to the group without regard to the disparity in their lifespans and standings in the Abyss. Darien is comfortable with being the most underhanded member of the group, helping each person achieve their aims as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Outside the group, Darien is always plotting, constantly searching for cracks in personalities and the chinks in others’ emotional armors. Calling him a conniver is accurate but a lessening of his abilities in his mind. If people don’t secure what is theirs, then it's his right to take it and bring it back to the Unchained for their own use.

His family will prosper, even if others must starve to make it happen.

All of this covers the deep, stifling fear that his time with the Unchained is laughably short. Most of them carry the blood of the Long-Lived in their veins and can afford to take the long view on everything. Darien knows that he's got a few decades, at best, to make his life count for something.

When its over, he wants to leave behind something that will make everyone remember his name.

Likes:

  • 1. Power: The ability to control one's life and the lives of others is intoxicating. Darien craves power and the ability to make his own rules. His pursuit of his own criminal empire stems from his deep desire to not only create something lasting, but to have the power to aid Tylmandra's ascent and build a place that she can rule.

  • 2. The Unchained: His allies among the Unchained grant him the drive to better himself. Working with them gives Darien the feeling of belonging to something greater than himself. He'd never voice how much he needs them. He just keeps showing up, figuring that they'll take the hint someday.

  • 3. The Seedy Side of Little Terreille: Darien never felt at home among the Aristos and the so-called "upper crust" of Little Terreille. Their clothes were too pretty, their parties too boring, and their people too shitty. He loves the bars, the nightclubs, and the brothels of Goth and other cities because they represent the true Little Terreille in his mind. He learned more about family and community in the bad parts of every town he's been to than he ever learned with his stepmother and step-siblings.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Child Abuse: His step-brothers used to beat on him when their father wasn't around, holding him down and spitting (or urinating) on him. While Darien isn't a crusader (he leaves that to the others), physical abuse of children is an excellent way to end up dead at his hands. He also enjoys killing anyone who defends or tries to avenge said abusers.

  • 2. Monogamy: Many experiences in life are meant to be shared and love is one of them. The idea of settling down with a single person for the rest of his life is anathema to Darien. The Long-Lived have several close partners in their lifetimes; why should the short-lived (read: him) be any different? Darien enjoys fun, no-strings sexual relationships with a few women he truly likes, but he's honest about it from the start. Better times for everyone that way.

  • 3. Illness: Darien despises being sick and one of the primary reasons he said yes to her offer (aside from her lovely physical proportions and sharp wit) was the idea of having a Healer close at hand. His mother died from illness because they didn’t know any Healers who could help them at a moment’s notice. Darien’s determined not to make the same mistake. While he’s not obsessive about his physical health, he often probes Silver for knowledge of various ailments and maladies and how they might be treated. He always asks for the team and his friends, of course.

    Fears:

  • 1. Getting Old: Silver, Marcos, Ishan, and Nadja will all vastly outlive him. For him, the next fifty years will determine if his life meant anything. For them, it’s just a small chapter in their lives. Darien would prefer for his family to remember him the way he is right now and not as a crippled old man that they had to take care of until the end of his life. Even now, he plucks the gray strands from his hair and strives to stay in shape so that he's always operating at his full capacity.

  • 2. Tylmandra's Death: Mother Night bound them together to support and care for each other. Darien likes his Queen and is still learning about her, but he's already very aware of her penchant for doing what she wants, when she wants, consequences be damned. Darien just found her and he constantly worries that she's going to bite off more than she can chew and that he'll be burying her before they truly learn how to work together. He's sick of burying people; losing his Queen would crush him.

  • 3. Success: If he fails to achieve his goals, Darien is really no worse off than he was yesterday. But he's never examined what becoming a successful criminal in Little Terreille means. He'll have to work around other crime lords and manage his territory. He won't be to just kill everyone who gets in his way without creating more problems than he solves. His problems will shift from being conceptual matters to actual issues to solve. Not to mention the hungry young wolves who'll eventually challenge him for everything he's built.

Getting to the top is easy; staying there is the issue, especially with individuals like Lord Black in existence. This causes Darien to constantly prepare himself to escape, fight back, or cajole his allies into helping him destroy his enemies so that he gets what he wants.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Witchflame: Darien can project blasts of Witchfire, but he loves tossing fireballs at his from long-range to immolate and explode his enemies. It’s one of the few times that the normally regimented and controlled Prince cuts loose, with the fire feeding his deeper hunger to destroy those that stand against the Unchained.

  • 2. Passing Through Objects: Getting beat up as a kid teaches you a lot of things. If you’re slow, get faster. If you don’t like getting hit, learn to shield. Or, if you’ve done both of those things and it’s still a problem, don’t let them touch you in the first place. While Darien is aces at phasing himself, his real skill comes at moving large groups through walls and doors without concentration. He can move the full gathering of the Unchained into and out of locations without ill effect.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Mind Delving: Darien has a difficult time attempting to read the thoughts of other people. He’s not able to discern more than the most basic surface thoughts of a target, even when the subject opens their barriers to him. He cannot read the surface thoughts of those who stand deeper in the Abyss than himself at all.

  • 2. Physical Enhancement: Darien was never physically larger or brawnier than his tormentors, forcing him to rely on his silver tongue to get out of situations. When that fails, fighting people with power bolts or Witchflame is a go to, so long as he doesn't have to go into physical combat with them. For this, he prefers to be standing behind Marcos, several shields, and maybe a wall for good measure.

    History:

Darien Embers was born to Tariel Embers on a hot summer night in 157 AP, in Midland District. Her father, Ludric, suggested that she leave him on the doorstep of an orphanage and spare herself the failure of trying to raise him. Tariel had loved Darien’s father, but he was married to a woman from a powerful family that would make trouble for the Dharoan family. Horrified, Tariel took her son and left her father’s house, swearing that she’d make it on her own. She never spoke to her father again, pouring all of her energy into her son. The pair were best friends throughout Darien’s childhood, with her being even more overjoyed than him when he received the Blood Opal during his Birthright Ceremony.

This also marked the first time that Darien met his father, Dallen Montano. It was a brief, cold meeting with the older man simply acknowledging that he was Darien’s father and providing his mother a bit of money. Then Dallen was gone again and Darien wouldn’t see him for several years.

Tariel moved Darien to Goth that year, where she got involved with the Gatekeepers for a time, working odd jobs to feed herself and Darien. Darien didn’t know much about her mother’s friends except that they did things that made other people angry. He played with a few of the local slum kids from time to time and saw how poorly many of them were treated. Tariel earned a position in a Village Court, processing paperwork. She started selling the Court’s official seal in order to supplement her income. She’d hoped to make enough money to live comfortably, but when her crime was discovered, she was removed from her position and blacklisted from serving in other Courts.

Tariel turned to crime full-time and Darien grew up helping her with various cons. He arrived home one evening in his fifteenth year to find his mother dead and their apartment trashed. He took the emergency stash of marks his mother kept for a needed escape and went to his father’s home in Midland. His stepbrothers forced him to wait until morning before his father would see him. When Dallen heard the story, he sighed and told Darien that he could stay.

Dallen and Darien got along easily enough as one man relating to another, though it was hard for them to talk about his mother. Dallen was also in the process of starting a new business in Nharkava, spending more time away from home than he spent in it. His departures left the young Prince at the mercy of his father’s wife, Kestra, who often disparaged Tariel in Darien’s presence. When Darien took offense, her sons, Cameron and Benton, were eager to “defend their mother’s honor” by assaulting Darien. Whenever he defended himself, Kestra told Dallen that Darien was a troubled young man who was disrupting their home. Rather than defend his son, Dallen stayed away from home more often, forcing Darien to do the same.

Leaving home at eighteen, Darien returned to Goth determined to make something of himself. He did odd jobs for a couple of the gangs, earning enough money to keep himself from starving, but not enough for true comfort. It was around this time that he made friends with Landa Sutherland and her daughter, Audra, both of whom invited Darien over for a homecooked meal now and again. They introduced Darien to a few people who needed their files and business papers organized from time to time, allowing Darien to buy better clothes for himself. These were the people who attended his Offering Ceremony and who comforted him after his father died during one of his trips to Nharkava. Darien was crushed to learn of his father’s death; he was further hurt when Kestra challenged his father’s will, robbing Darien of his inheritance.

This time, Darien immersed himself in the criminal underworld of Little Terreille, using his skill with Witchflame and his organizational skills to help a few small outfits organize themselves. He killed a few gang members during this time and earned his share of scars. Eventually, Darien decided that he’d rather run his own outfit than follow someone else’s rules, especially when it came to recruiting kids. A few places burned down after Darien passed through, and Darien slipped away to Midland for a time. He broke into his father’s home and stole several of his possessions. One lock-box in particular alerted Darien to the real reason for his father’s love of Nharkava:

    He had another family.

He wanted to dislike Ishanvi and Gulshan, to group them in the same category as his step-brothers, but he couldn’t. He liked Nharkavan culture and the emphasis that they placed on family. He introduced himself to her and, after some initial bumps, suggested that she look him up if she ever came to Little Terreille.

He returned home and soon ran afoul of Lord Talos Morgan, a crime lord who'd been trying to push people out of Darien's neighborhood in order to purchase the land for his own desires. When a pair of Morgan's men showed up and threatened Landa and Audra, Darien burned both men alive. He killed the next three men that Lord Morgan sent as well, then went to Lord Morgan's club and suggested that he find another neighborhood to operate in.

Morgan retaliated by killing Landa and having Andra beaten near death.

Darien went to storm Lord Morgan's home, intending to kill the crime lord and end the threat for good. He prepared himself for a fight...and arrived to find bodies littering the estate. Venturing in further, Darien killed a couple of stragglers before finding Lord Morgan at the mercy of an assassin.

An assassin that Darien immediately recognized as the Queen of his soul.

Initially, Tylmandra and the Prince were uneasy at the new tie between them, but the last few years have allowed them to find a rhythm that works for them. He's sure that she doesn't tell him everything and she hasn't asked the same from him. Tylmandra vouched for him with Silver Thrax, securing his eventual membership in the Unchained. Five years in, Darien's found his own bonds with the rest of the group and considers them an extended family.

Darien hopes to establish his own criminal organization in Little Terreille. The pieces are coming together, but the appearance of the Lord Black, the destruction of Logain Morr’s Court and the slaughter of the Hell Lords have changed the playing field. Darien’s a little worried over these changes but he knows that the Unchained will weather the oncoming storm.

In the meantime, he’s sizing up the Montano holdings, readying himself to destroy his stepmother Kestra’s financial empire. The Aristo woman and her sons have stolen the birthright of Darien and his siblings.

He’s going to make them pay for that.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

Darien told the others that he was visiting with family after business concluded at the docks.

He just let everyone fill in the blanks about the family he was referring to.

He entered the small house on the outskirts of Goth, one of the few places spared from the worst of the Gangs and their garbage. The house’s security webs were keyed to him; he’d paid good money to ensure it. The money came from the Montano family's coffers, but they had plenty of it, for now. They’d make enough to replace it by tomorrow afternoon. All that mattered now was making sure the house remained off the books.

The light in the study was on. Darien paused, sighing softly. She couldn’t sleep.

Of course she can’t sleep, fool. The pain only allows her a few hours a night.

    What’s your excuse?

Stepping into the doorway, Darien tried, and failed, not to startle her.

Andra Sutherland looked up at him from her place at the nearby desk flashed him a crooked smile. Years ago, it was one of the prettiest smiles he’d ever seen. Lord Morgan’s thugs saw fit to rectify that by shattering her jaw. Even after all of the Healers he’d bought, bribed, and outright bullied into helping him, Andra wasn’t making any new progress.

    You could always ask Silver.

Darien. ‘th late. Didn’t think I’d thee you tonight.” she said, her mouth having trouble with the words.

Just wanted to pop in and see how you were feeling, love. I was in the neighborhood.

’m fine.” she lied, driving another spike of guilt into his chest. He wanted to turn and leave, wanted to go join the others at the bar. But he forced himself to step into the room and sit on the opposite side of the desk.

Do you need anything? How are things going with Lady Jessamyn?

They’re good. And no, I don’t need anything. You take good care of me, Darien. You alwayth have.

He forced himself to smile and accept her praise. He made small talk. He even laughed a little.

Every time he did something terrible, or thought of doing something terrible, he found his way to Andra’s house. Each time he stepped through her door, he forced himself to look at her, to smile at her, to pretend that he was the good man she believed him to be. The same man that Ishanvi thought he was capable of being, if he’d just set his sights higher. If he’d just let go of all of his rage.

The kind of man that Tylmandra deserved when she finally decided she truly wanted to be a Queen.

Every time Darien came here, he looked at Andra, his Price for his victory over Lord Morgan and asked himself one question:

    Will you change your ways?

He forced himself to remember every single injury she’d suffered, all the ones that plagued her now and remained to be healed. He tallied up every mark he’d spent, every person he’d beaten and bribed, every person he’d killed for just a little more power or just because they’d pissed him off. He counted up the number of people they’d wrecked just this evening and the sheer thrill he got out of ruining someone’s plans...and the answer remained the same.

He helped Andra back to her bed and tucked her in, kissing her gently on the forehead as sleep took her. She’d be up again before sunrise, but Darien and his answer would be long gone.

    Not today.
