Distinguishing Features: Bishop has an unusually aquiline nose for a Dharoan.

Personality

Personality:
He's rather devoted to the concept of Protocol, though more to the spirit of it than necessarily the letter.  Every Territory is different, after all.  That belief in the spirit of Protocol drives him to be better, to DO better - and to accept the consequences of being better.  Protocol is necessary.  It keeps the Blood from killing everything and everyone around them.  It is the glue that protects the world, and so even when it hurts, he will follow the spirit of it.

No good deed goes unpunished, they say, and he can prove it.  His belief in Protocol means that he never gets to see his daughter - that he must allow her to grow up without any interference from himself because her mother denied him at the Birthright Ceremony.  That conflict has settled into his soul, and it makes him view most Blood as selfish creatures that need to be managed, else they make the wrong decisions.

Rather than allow his heartache to control him, Bishop has turned to controlling everything he can about himself and those around him.  He learns what makes his people tick, and he will find a way to get them to let him dominate the bigger parts of their lives in order to ensure they live comfortably.

He's damned near compulsive about the place that everything should have, from the writing tools on his desk, exactly where his Secretary should sit, and especially how drinks are served.  Those that are his, he will manage.  Those that are his, he will protect.  He's charming, and logical, and precise.    Arguing against his 'suggestions' is often a futile matter, and so most that he claims as his own won't argue for very long.  Especially as they have noticed that his normally soft spoken voice disappears into complete silence when he is truly pissed - and in those moments, they are reminded as to why Protocol is so damned important.  His silence is far more frightening than his soft sarcasm.

If someone leaves his life, it will be because he allows it.  If someone attempts to harm those few he calls his own, he will make sure they die at his feet.  If they are lucky, that death will be swift.  If they are not.. well, he's precise.  He'll make sure that things last long enough for him to gain some satisfaction.

Beneath the cool discipline and the orders, however, lies something softer.  It's rare that someone might see it - and where Bishop is picky about those he takes under his wing, he is even more picky about who gets to see the softy and chewy center of his heart.  It's been ripped out before, and he's still not recovered from Edora's betrayal.

Those that manage to get to it?  They will find that everything about Bishop is about protecting himself, and those he gives a damn about.  They find that under the discipline, and the Protocol, and the bluntness of his commands he is in fact a passionate male full of need and fire.

Yes, he wants things just so but he wants them that way to guard those he cares about from the overwhelming desire to connect, to be remembered, to be loved.  Bishop wants at least one person to give as much of a damn about him as he does the few he calls his own.  He wants someone to love him at least as much as he loves his daughter - meaning they should want to burn the world to help him if he needs it.

Likes:
  • 1.  Coffee :  This isn't just a like. This is an obsessive love.  Bishop collects various strains of coffee, and there is nothing he loves more than to savor a cup of coffee while he looks over the paperwork involved in his life when it comes to morning routines.
  • 2.  Correcting Rebellious Streaks : For someone who loves obedience and routine, it seems odd that he would enjoy the rebellious souls he comes across.  And yet.. he does.  He gets great amusement out of watching them try to buck the rules, and he especially likes to discipline them when they are his.  Their rebellion is adorable, so despite his efforts to correct these moments, he finds he almost hopes they continue to occasionally show up.
  • 3.  Cats : Goddess save the souls of those he sees treating a cat poorly, because he won't.  These creatures are the Night Personified, he is certain of it.  A dog will love anyone who feeds it - a cat makes you earn their affection.  On top of those very good points?  His daughter loves cats, and this is one of the few ways he has to feel as if there is a connection to his child.

    Dislikes:
  • 1.  Glacians : Religious fanaticism rubs him badly.  Don't get him wrong, he feels badly for the Light Jewelled Refugees, and they totally deserve to live a life uncollared; but their religion still follows them.  Just because they disagree with the tenet that sees them oppressed doesn't mean that the problem goes away with Light Jewelled Glacians.  It just means that they aren't as obviously awful.
  • 2. Long Lived : The Long Lived are assholes.  He's yet to meet one that doesn't treat normal people like they're somehow less than dogs, or one that gives a short lived Prince the respect that is his due.  Every time he has to deal with one, he wants to scrub his brain to rid himself of the frustration they cause him.
  • 3.  Street Bullies :  There is a difference between putting people in their place and being an asshole just to be an asshole.  Street bullies may think they deserve respect, but they don't, and he enjoys putting them in their places - beneath his boot heels and sobbing their apologies.

    Fears:
  • 1.  Odelle Returning to Dharo : He was sent to Little Terreille in order to keep tabs on Odelle Ackley.  A Sapphire Queen, born to a Cymrean parent, could be a problem if she ever returns to Dharo.  Not that he cares if a Cymrean runs the place or not, but when one is directed by their Province Queen's Court to go do a job, one does their damned job.  So he regularly writes home, letting them know of what he's seen regarding Ackley and her willingness to leave Little Terreille.  So far she seems interested only in running Rockland - and so long as she does that, he is guaranteed to be able to continue sending money to family without having to worry about a damned war.
  • 2. Fathering Another Child : He was never happier than he was when his little Kalia was born.  For eight years, he doted on her.  Raised her and taught her all of his tricks, his methods for how to deal with the world, and showed her how to find joy in things like books and stories.  When she turned eight, and had her Birthright?  Her mother denied him paternity, claiming that his brother's being a pirate would bring nothing but trouble and she wanted nothing to do with them.  His heart was broken, but the law was clear.  Since that day, he has avoided having children as he is unwilling to endure that heartbreak again.
  • 3.  Leaving No Legacy: Protocol demanded that he step back from his daughter, and so he did.  But there is a real fear in him that he will become insignificant, forgotten, and ultimately left in a trash heap for his daughter's thoughts.  After Tanner died, he found that his own parents tended to reflect on their more jovial son, despite his faults; and frankly the idea that he will be forgotten by all those he cares about terrifies him more than anything else.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Death Spells - He is not as talented at pummelling opponents into bloody smears on the ground; and so he taught himself to work in more elegant ways.  If you have raised his ire enough for him to want to kill you, he won't stab you. He'll set a spell to set bubbles of air in the bloodstream and watch as his enemies fall at his feet.
  • 2.  Psychic Monitoring - Clients will often come thinking to have the advantage - and he will often monitor their behavior for signs of stress.  Where is the trigger, where is their weak point? When he finds it, he hammers home, cornering them to get what he wants without ever having to leave his chair.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Travel Craft - He can't do this, even with the assistance of Landing Pads.  Every time he tries he gets 'spit' out into the most awkward of locations.  He is forced to use carriages driven by others, and it annoys him to no end.
  • 2. Physical Enhancement - There is a reason he learned to lob spells rather than punch people more effectively in the face.  He CAN fight.  He's not even bad at it.  But he will always be at more of a disadvantage against Jewelled blood when they increase their speed or strength and he.. can't.

    History:
Norna Thatcher and John Bladsen were surprised when their first born son sprouted the scent of Prince on his second day of life.  Neither of them had expected a casted child, but they embraced the challenges eagerly.  Bishop was taught Protocol, both the how and the why, and he was trained to weigh his every action against the standards that kept the Blood civilized.

Considered to be an intense and quiet little boy, he spent more time attending his studies than trying to play with other children.  Despite this, he showed clear signs of wanting to take care of people.  If his mother needed help moving laundry about, he would do it without a word.  If he thought that a child in the village was being picked on, he would plant himself between that child and bullies, willing to stand for those that needed protection.

Mother Night must have created him to be a protector, his mother said, and when he came out of his Birthright with an Opal, she worried that perhaps she was too correct about it.

She gave birth to Tanner that year.  Bishop loved no one as much as he loved his baby brother.  He was always willing to change diapers, to help watch his brother, to teach him to read.  He helped teach his brother the basics as he grew, everything from reading to writing to mathematics.  But he worried, because his brother wasn't so much interested in the studying as he was in playing with the other children.

Tanner got in fights.  Not because he was mean, but because he just didn't care as much about what he should be doing.

It didn't matter.  Bishop loved him anyways.  Bishop grew up to claim the Sapphire at his Offering, obtained a job working for a village Steward, and courted a Jeweless female named Edora.  He had known she was his when he met her, had felt her scent grab hold of him and demand his attention in a way that was not ignorable.  He took her through her Virgin Night, he cared for her and doted on her.. and a few years later they had a little girl together.

He still loved his little brother, but that love paled in comparison to the love he felt for Kalia, his little girl.  From the moment he laid eyes on her, he knew his purpose in life was to take care of her.  He knew that the world had shifted, changed, and that it would never go back to the way it was; and he was completely alright with that.

When his brother left home to go learn to sail, he wished him well.  When word came that Tanner had gotten himself involved in shadier sailing than they had expected.. he couldn't bring himself to damn his little brother.  Tanner had always been more of a free spirit, a wild soul, and he was certain that Tanner would calm down eventually.

Edora always made her opinions about Tanner clear.  Bishop would grit his teeth, enduring her growing anger about his brother's choices.  She wasn't wrong.  Piracy was obviously not an honorable choice.  But he couldn't bring himself to speak ill of his brother.  So he would remain quiet, and dote on Kalia, and try to forget about the way Edora kept trying to pick fights about it.

Kalia's Birthright had her coming out with a Purple Dusk, and a brilliant smile.  He'd wanted to hug her, to sweep her up in his arms and shout his pride to the world.  And then his heart shattered - because Edora declared to the Priestess that Kalia had no father.  His little girl's heart broke after a moment of shock.

His heart shattered.  The Priestess took the girl to the side, consoling her while Edora confronted him.  Your brother is a pirate, and your family does nothing to stop him.  I want none of you near Kalia, not ever again.

He never told Tanner why Edora denied him paternity.  He only told his parents so that they would not try to speak to her themselves, now that they could not see their grandchild.  He also told them not to tell Tanner.  If they disobeyed, he wasn't sure.  He dove into his work, desperate to distract himself so that he would not fall to temptation and sneak out to see his child.

The law said she wasn't his.. but she was his daughter.  His purpose in the world was growing up without him, and every time he wavered, he would take on an assignment from the Village Steward that would send him elsewhere for a while.  Protocol is everything to the Blood.  The world would burn if we do not follow it.  He would repeat that to himself every evening.  He would repeat it to himself on his daughter's birthday while he would drink himself into a stupor in local bars.

Four years after her Birthright, he was approached by a man who worked for Lady Margaret Webster's Court.   A circle member, a trusted male in her orbit.  Oliver Denholm was older than Bishop.  He was a Prince, lighter than Bishop himself, and more than willing to endure Bishop's glare as he brought up that he had seen Kalia and that she seemed a talented girl.  Kalia, it seemed, had sprouted the scent of a Black Widow.

He was starving for news of his daughter; desperate for it, he bought the male drinks.  By the end of the night, he'd signed contracts that made him a subordinate to Prince Denholm.  In return, Oliver was going to make sure that Kalia became a Ward of Lady Margaret's court, and that she got the best lessons available.

Bishop couldn't take care of his child on his own, but he was able to make damned sure that Kalia had a good shot at rising higher in life than he ever would.  He settled into Arinthorpe, keeping an eye on how the business of Lady Gwenyn Webster's court managed.  He helped in the Steward's office, running numbers and finding good deals for fresh stock.  When word came from Oliver that Edora had an accident and had died, he knew that Oliver likely had something to do with it.  Oliver assured him that Kalia was in good hands, that he would adopt her as a niece himself and make sure that she was raised with money and prestige.  A small part of him, the part that had loved Edora, mourned her.  The rest of him was happy the bitch was dead - and so he didn't dig into the accident.  He let it go.

A year after his assignment started, word came that Tanner had died.  His ship had sunk, and there was no body to be recovered.  His parents were a mess.  Bishop?  Bishop found himself rocked for the second time.  His little brother, with his wild nature and perfect smile, was gone.  His daughter was forbidden to him, and he felt adrift and without purpose.  He ran on auto-pilot for the rest of the year, communication between himself and his parents growing more and more scarce as it became clear that they were too busy grieving Tanner to tend to him.

The end of that year brought him a breath of fresh air, a new purpose, because Prince Denholm had a new assignement for him.  He was to go to Little Terreille as a merchant, and set up a shop in Rockland to ensure trade between the Province and Rockland.  While there, he was to keep an eye on Lady Odelle Ackley and report any suspicious activity.  She had just taken the Province and already she had made Prince Denholm nervous.

Bishop did a little digging while trying to determine why.  Bishop's research showed that Odelle Ackley was a Sapphire Queen - something Dharo could make use of-but sadly, she was also half Cymrean.  He didn't personally give a shit about someone's ancestry.  He didn't really care if the rulers of his Territory were Dharoan or Cymrean.  War was bad for business, though, and Oliver was taking care of Kalia.

So he left his home territory, Arinthorpe village, and his grieving family.  He took enough money from Oliver to be able to buy a bit of property in Rockland to set up shop, and hired on enough Landen workers to be able to set up a decent trade route, and he made his way to Eastville.

Like the year his daughter was ripped away from him, he dove into his work.  He bought a decent building for his business, he hired on more workers, and he began running goods between Rockland and Dharo.  He partnered with a Dharoan Black Widow to make sure that all of their goods were authentic, that nothing had been tampered with, and to scare off any gang bully boys that might get it into their heads to try to extort him.

Between the Widow and himself?  No one seems to have wanted to risk attempts yet.  And that's just fine with him.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:
    "Prince Thatcher, I'm Iyan Bailey."
    "Sir."
    "Excuse me?"

Bishop lifted his eyes, studying the male with the intriguing scent across the desk from him.  He had beautiful eyes, it was the first thing he noticed about the male, other than his scent.  The second thing he noticed was the taste of Warlord, and then the Jewels, and then.. then the hair.  It was beautiful stuff, that hair.

His eyes slowly scrolled back from Iyan's hair to the beautiful eyes that he had spotted first.

"I am aware it is not typical, but I prefer my employees to call me Sir.  It keeps the Landen workers at ease if they don't have to worry about trying to keep titles straight."  His voice was soft, even while he lied through his teeth about why he wanted his employees to call him Sir.  The happy perk was, he wasn't wrong.  The Landen seemed to prefer to not have to try to keep track of castes if they didn't have to, and Bishop didn't mind bending Protocol a bit to keep his employees happy and unafraid, and the bonus of hearing that word out of people's lips just made his day.

Really though, he just enjoyed hearing Sir come out of people's mouths.

And when Iyan experimentally said 'sir', he felt his cock harden beneath his pants.  But he didn't make that clear to the male.  Instead he turned his attention to the file beneath his hands.  "You're twenty five.  You'll be one of the youngest people working for me.  I expect a great deal of responsible behavior from my employees.  You will be capable of that, won't you?"

He turned his eyes back up, watching as Iyan Bailey assured him that he could be responsible.  The male was eager to please.  It probably had something to do with the fact that Bishop offered good pay, honorable work, and was known to be a fair employer.  Sure, he was a bit intense.  And sure, he had been known to scare the piss out of people on occasion, but he was fair.

And he was known for following through on his word.  And shit, the male's scent was still tugging on his attention.  It demanded his attention, grabbed him by the pants, and said 'look at me'.  So he looked, and he liked what he saw.  Iyan Bailey seemed a good male, with a solid head on his shoulders, and there was an almost playful glint to his eye.  He liked him.  He really did.

"Welcome to the family, Lord Bailey.  I look forward to seeing how you do."  He said it quietly, watching the male in front of him, and the way the male looked at him.  That settled it.  This male was his.

Iyan Bailey just hadn't figured it out yet.
