Personality

Personality:
At first glance, Benjamin comes off as untouchable, creepy, and (unsurprisingly) dark. He tends to observe and listen a lot when a conversation first strikes up, his makeup ringed eyes catching every movement and his keen ear picking up each nuance. His attire is impeccable and nearly always all black, which he uses as a warning that he is a dangerous man and to keep up the appearance of being mysterious and unapproachable. Benji wants people to prove they’re worth the waste of his time.

He’s constantly thinking, mostly about what his next business venture will be or what carnal delight he can partake in. He’s a material man, mostly given over to hedonism. He does enjoy intellectual pursuits and philosophical debates, though these things usually happen hand in hand with the thick scent of sensimilla. And he does have morals. Just...interesting ones. He’ll sell drugs to the willing but he won’t drug someone unwilling (unless they’ve done something very bad to him). And he’ll craft a death spell for a client but never if the intended victim is a child (and if threatened to make one, he’ll just make one for the buyer instead). He’s willing to let Blood law dictate most avenues of justice but should someone appropriately misuse his craft or betray him, Benji will extract payment from that person’s hide drop for drop.

He’s not a nice man but at least he isn’t entirely a bad man.

He can’t really name anyone that he trusts but there are a handful of people in his life that he considers highly unlikely to backstab him. That will do just fine. He will not be settling down with a witch and bearing children -- ever. He’s in this life for what it brings to the decadent feast -- sex, drugs, music, money, power. Companions flock to him because of the things he can give them and he revels in that spotlight -- the dark god of exiles, heathens, and misfits.

Still, people are willing to deal with his shrewd tactics because he produces results. And, for the most part, if you leave him alone, he’ll do the same to you. He can be charming, he can be benevolent. He knows that most of society wants to be left alone to their happiness...or their misery...and he respects that. Hell, depending on your flavor, he might just have the concoction for it. Just don’t try to cut into his market or spill on his clothes, please. He’s worked hard for those things.

Likes:
  • 1 - Orgies. As a connoisseur of the very products he sells, Benji’s idea of a proper, delightful party involves plenty of naked bodies and lots of drugs. He’s a man who loves sensual contact and inebriation and has a reputation for throwing wild parties that last throughout the night. Leave your inhibitions and commitments at the door.
  • 2 - Showmanship and the art of it. Benjamin LOVES the sleight of hand, snap of the fingers, that collective gasp of the audience as he surprises them. Benji thrives on that moment of reveal and the reaction it creates. This is why you’ll find him eyeing fine clothing, practicing certain movements, brushing up on his whimsy Craft, or buying interesting accessories. It’s all in the presentation...
  • 3 - Power over someone. Be it through secrets, knowledge, the upper hand in a business transaction, or straight out black mail, Benji knows that a lot of his empire is built upon the bones of those he has destroyed. He revels in knowing that he holds power over his enemies and allies. At least with his allies, he treats them well. But his enemies...
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Bureaucracy. Protocol and Blood society is one thing. He can respect that. But bureaucrats...ugh. The tax collectors. The lawyers. The politicians. The city planners. They’re unoriginal. Boring. Stuck in their little laws, creating their own impossible realities and exerting them on the rest of the world. Who decided that they should have such power?
  • 2 - His privacy interrupted. Whether it be while he’s sleeping or taking an hour to himself, Benjamin loathes having it interrupted because those are the moments he uses to plan out more of his business ventures or simply escape from the expectations for a moment. Expect a very upset man to answer the door. Or a power bolt to the face.
  • 3 - Being plain or normal. Benjamin judges most of the Blood for being uninteresting and boring. They have great power, interesting power, different power, yet they like to be creatures of boring habit and not use that power to create something original or unique. Benji’s attire and mannerisms are partially in place because he doesn’t want to be perceived as just another cog in the machine, like the rest of the Blood seem to be, and he doesn’t want to squander this gift.
Fears:
  • 1 - Losing his power. Not his Jewel power, his financial empire, which is the only true power he sees as having. He has put blood, sweat, tears, and sex into this empire and he will not see it fall before he draws his last breath. This fear manifests as a meticulous counting of his recordkeeping and a near maddening pace of setting up new contracts.
  • 2 - His family being used against him. Even though they are still somewhat at odds, Benjamin goes to great lengths to make certain that his family is protected from those that would seek revenge. Desperate measures from desperate, destitute lives who cannot get to him will look for easier prey and Benji fears that will be his family. Wards and protective spells cover his mother’s home and, to a lesser degree, his brother’s as well.
  • 3 - Death. Not the pain that might come with it or the uncertainty of when it will happen (although that does sometimes send him into sheer terror) but rather the absolute finality of it. Yes, he could possibly become demon-dead and continue some half life but what about when he burns out and becomes a whisper in the Darkness? What of that seeming oblivion? How does anyone make peace with becoming nothing after living such a decadent life?
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Exploit Weakness. Benji’s strength with this Craft is a blend of emotional knowledge and martial technique. He can tell what will emotionally disarm or unbalance someone and tends to use that sort of thing to either get the upper hand in a fight or an advantage when brute force bargaining. He greatly enjoys using this to dismantle someone.
  • 2 - Security Spells. As part of his fear of losing his empire, Benji has developed strong security spells that do not need as much power to keep and are a bit harder to detect. If detected, they appear as little glowing spiders.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Jewel Management. Driven by a need to continue succeeding, Benji struggles with just knowing when to stop. He will often push his reserves into empty, though he has learned to stop just before breaking (what good is he dead?). He usually has to be reminded to eat and rest, which means that he tends to run on low Jeweled power.
  • 2 - Telekinetic Craft. While in possession of gracefully fine motor skills, this did not translate into telekinetic skills. If Benjamin has to transport something over a distance over a few feet, it wobbles terribly and will probably be dropped.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Marissa Laine, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk witch (age 58, born 136 AP)
Father: Andrew Laine, Yellow to Summer Sky Prince (deceased at age 53, born 133 AP)
Siblings: brother Jericho Laine, Tiger Eye to Summer Sky Warlord (age 30, born 164 AP)

History:
Benjamin didn’t start off as an eccentric child.

He began as quiet, bookish. He had a vivid imagination and an insatiable curiosity. Growing up near the docks, he could fill his ears with tales as true or fantastical as he wanted. He always knew they were stories, though, even if he wished they were something more. For most of his childhood, he was happy to play by himself or with his younger brother. Sometimes, he would follow his father down to work. Sometimes, he went to school. But most people remember young Benjamin as a child always staring at the sky, as though he was trying to figure out what more was up there.

What turned Benjamin eccentric were the bullies, the other children that hung around the docks or in Benji’s classes that had decided that this child with his head in the clouds was the different one. And we all know what becomes of the different children at a young age.

Not even Benji’s Summer Sky Birthright was enough of a detractor for the most persistent. Over the years, that quiet, bookish young boy, besieged on many sides, became angry and lashed out. He found ways to fight back -- not with fists but with Craft. He learned how to craft spells that humiliated his tormentors, which often meant retaliation, but at least it made Benjamin feel less helpless.

His teenage years is where he began to find his tribe -- the other misfits and exiles. This upset Benjamin’s father, but by now, Benji’s chosen way of dealing with someone who tried to force their beliefs, fists, or way of life on him was to fight back in some form.

Don’t worry, he didn’t kill his father. Someone else did that. Later.

Benji moved out of his parents’ house after he turned nineteen. He didn’t invite them to his Offering because he didn’t think they deserved to see the beginning of his ascension into dark glory. An Opal, in his mind, was perfect for his plans -- not dark enough to be feared but not light enough to be taken advantage of. In his early twenties, built upon enough connections in basements, he began to lay the foundation for what would become his financial empire -- shops that catered to those lacking in love. In some neighborhoods, this was as tame as lingerie and simple aphrodisiacs housed in a simple, clean, nearly cookie-cutter chain of stores. Eventually, he was even able to find a public market for some of the more daring fetishes and desires, branding them as sort of a gateway store between the two extremes. Those stores practically invited the miscreants of society into their arms, selling dark themed clothing, chains, cuffs, and all sorts of accoutrements associated with socially deviant lifestyles.

But the best, most profitable ones were in places the upstanding wouldn’t go -- at the end of an alley or down dark steps to a basement. These were the places where vetted regulars could get a different fix or fetish. The air in these places was thick with sensimilla smoke, with drinks rimmed with nightmare vine dust, and plenty of willing sex to be consumed.

Within a decade, Benji and his business partners had a fair market share of the sex and drugs passing through Little Terreille. The only thing that threatened the collapse of this rapid rise was when Benjamin’s father found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time and was killed when Benji was twenty-eight. Benjamin found himself dealing with his family more than he wanted to, helping his grieving mother get back on her feet. But he didn’t want to conform to that “good son” life anymore. It didn’t fit him. So, even though he helped his mother get back on her feet, he still stayed apart.

Now Benjamin is at the place where he can attract clients from all over the Realm. And, while he thinks that he can definitely do it, does he have the supply chains and connections in place to do it?

Time to find out.

Character in Play:

Benjamin Laine stared at the map of Little Terreille without really staring at it. Staring through it, perhaps, because he knew every inch of that map more intimately than he knew his own pale and pierced body. He knew where the invisible lines of socioeconomic status were drawn, where the divisions of power and poverty were compartmentalized. The map in this office, proudly splayed like the whore she was across an entire wall, had no markers indicating the extent of Benji’s drug and sex empire.

But he did not need markers to tell him the limits of that empire either.

He remained staring at that map even though a knock came at the door. When he ignored it, another knock, and then, some fool walked into his office. “Do that again and I’ll take your left hand as payment,” the man known as Nocturne said. Nocturne to some, Bentley to others, Laine to an elite few. He had many names, just as he had many things to sell. His name was just another flavor that he offered to his customers.

As he swiveled his chair around, his long black hair cascading down the front of his impeccably pressed suit, Benji regarded the messenger and decided that, this time, shooting him would be a bigger waste of his precious time. “She’s here,” said the man who had rudely interrupted Benji’s ruminations. No need to ask who “she” was. She was early. Benji liked that in a woman. It meant she understood the value of one’s time.

Prince Laine slipped from the sumptuous chair with the grace of liquid in motion. With an elegant, theatrical flick of his wrist, a long black coat appeared, sliding over his suit like ink dripped onto a page. Now protected from the elements, he strode forward, ignoring the messenger but not forgetting his threat, as he went to meet a woman who was going to help him expand the boundaries of that invisible empire.

If he didn’t kill her first.
