Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Leevi is not a particularly happy-go-lucky personality. He does, however, bear that spark unique to Warlord Princes that drives his progress through life; less of a joie de vive than a thrill of the hunt. It’s all out there for him to prowl about in, push his boundaries, dive into the unknown. He could bring him the prize or get gored by it and he’d be smiling either way. He is very much a man who believes that life is the journey, not the destination. Age and responsibility have settled him slightly from the tempestuousness of his youth, leaving him both saddened and oddly pleased to be finding different foci for his energy.

It is his mission in life to be competent in everything he may called to provide information on or choose to do. Interests are never just passing hobbies with him; they are obsessions to investigate until he understands every nook and cranny of his latest enthusiasm. Sometimes he comes to regret this, as when he looks deeper into the smuggling trade and the hurt caused by both Court officials and unscrupulous fleecers of the desperate. But attention to detail is a point of pride with him and he can’t not do it. Nature and training both demand that he be his best and give his best if he is to serve properly.

And yet, there is a curious shyness about him when called out on his own successes. Though he rebelled against it, Leevi was raised in a Court. He absorbed the attitude at a young age that truly great things are rarely accomplished alone. It takes a Court to serve a Queen, or a territory and one should always give credit where it is due, or to the Mother which makes all possible. He’ll accept individual accolades with a grin, but always with a twinge of discomfort beneath the urbane charm.

He always did have a bit of a rebellious streak, fueled by his Caste’s restlessness and some orneriness all his own. He grew up the baby of his family, too. With his siblings, he often had to fight for what he wanted before someone older and stronger got to it. With his parents, he was perhaps indulged a bit more than the older children and given more attention than the rest of the brood. If not paired with an equal and thorough grounding in Protocol and responsibility, it could easily have been the ruin of him instead of forging a man with strong with in Law, but a willingness to break Rules as needed.

Likes:
  • Family- Leevi is the youngest of six and wouldn’t know what to do with himself without his family around him. He might hate their guts sometimes, but even at a relationship’s worst he’d rather get screamed at by a sister or punched in the face by a brother than left to brood alone. And there’s nothing like the comfortable buzz of a happy family getting along to warm your heart, or make you feel safe in the knowledge that these people have your back no matter what. He was even drawn to a ready-made family when seeking his own mates and would love to have children of his own.
  • Jewelry- For a male, Leevi is deeply appreciative of jewelry. He adores it for the craftsmanship that must go into every piece. He loves the shine of a polished gem and the gleam of well-formed metal. He finds the weight of rings and bracelets and pendant chains to be solid and reassuring; visible signs of confidence and position in a highly uncertain world. Every treasure gifted him is unique, and cherished.
  • Cats- Leevi is not immune to the charm of a companion animal. He always has one of his own and a habit of setting food out for any strays. Where others breed hardy dogs that can thrive in Glacian winters, he prefers the sort of independent hunter that can take care of itself rather than a creature with more of a pack mentality. It makes the beast’s companionship more valuable when it chooses to honor him with its friendship. Also, dogs can’t purr.
Dislikes:
  • Fighting… or at least fighting fair- Leevi received the standard combat training of any Warlord Prince destined for Court service. He can wield a combat shield or throw a power bolt with the rest of them. But he disdains mindless brawls or even duels of honor as a massive waste of his time. If a conflict ensues that he cannot talk his way out of, he finds it more efficient to simply wait and ambush his subject unknowing to take care of the problem... even if it means multi-tasking and going about more profitable business for twenty years before he can gain a suitably advantageous position to do so. He’d have made a good Summit recruit if he hadn’t had such wanderlust in his youth.
  • Light-Jeweled apologists- Leevi is a rather spiritual man and regular adherent at services. Even if the finer details of theology are not to his taste to argue, he would never dream of revolution as regards the Dark Religion. But something just rubs him the wrong way about a Light-Jeweled person who meekly accepts that they are, in more modern parlance, a trash-person because of it. They are Blood, children of fire and life! He’d rather be around a Light-Jewel spitting defiance all the way at the judgement Mother Night has leveled upon them than one who has accepted the flaw and feels they have to make up for it. Perhaps he has accepted more of the greater Realm’s attitudes than he knows, or is simply more of a religious revolutionary than he’s comfortable with admitting.
  • Inactivity- Leevi is a high-energy man who was raised in a busy household. He always has to be doing something, even in his downtime, or he feels lazy and unproductive.. If he’s sitting quietly, he might also be taking care of some paperwork. If he has taken some actual time off, he’d rather be skating or sailing than taking a nap or staring up at the stars.
Fears:
  • The Silent Civil War- Leevi is quite aware that his love of and trust in family is a horrible liability in the Star of Kaeleer. He’s been very lucky so far in that his whole family has been blessed enough for the subject not to come up much within the family. But should one of his sibs turn out to be an Underground sympathizer? Not all of them would be as forgiving. He dreads the day a pair of loose lips sleeping down the hall might mean he has to, as Steward of Ilsalmi, pass judgement or turn on one of his own in any way.
  • For Ilsalmi- While he may not have a Queen’s connection to it, the District is his home and heart. His mother’s rule of it is all he has ever known. Now that hand is gone and times are growing dark. The Light-Jeweled grow restless and angry, the Dark grow defensive and angry and Leevi can read the signs on war on the wind. For all his misgivings about a new Queen’s rule, he’ll gladly kneel at her feet if she can save his home.
  • A loveless marriage- Leevi believes in strong familial bonds as a source of love and comfort and a Warlord Prince will not accept anything less than a relationship of passion over business. But that isn’t always the way these things go in Glacia. Unofficially, he has an understanding with a local married witch and warlord. But his eldest sister seems to be taking it as a mission from Mother Night Herself to continue his mother’s quest to ‘see him settled’ and Leevi isn’t sure how much longer he can put her off. The least witch in Glacia may rule before a male, so she is head of the family now.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Travel Craft- When traveling alone, Leevi has traveled enough to have developed adeptness with navigating the winds with greater finesse and less power usage than many others of his Jewel rank. He has a sense for switching between Winds with ease and can often find lesser-used paths to get him where he’s going a little faster.
  • Voice Manipulation- Leevi has a strong, confident voice and was trained early on to use his natural charm to best advantage. With Craft, he is adept at pitching his voice to be most pleasing to a subject ear. He can calm one who is shaken, charm the wary or entice the reluctant.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Battle Craft- One on one, Leevi is a decent fighter who can channel the instincts of his caste to hold his own. But he is ill-practiced at large-scale battles and has a poor grasp on how to keep track of multiple targets. In such a battle, he does not know how to rate his strength and drains his Jewel much faster.
  • Hunter’s Mark- Leevi never showed much affinity for the caste Craft that allows a Warlord Prince to locate his chosen quarry. It’s particularly irritating when one’s abilities do not match his instincts to either find and kill or find and protect, but his Hunter’s Marks do not last as long as they should. He can only Mark a single target at a time and the Mark only lasts as long as one wearing the Rose would be able to power it.

History:

Leevi grew up safe and loved, in an unusually big family for a woman of Jeweled strength. But his mother was a Queen who seemed to genuinely enjoy having family around her and whose ambitions apparently never reached higher than her District. His memories before his Birthright were a bit hazy, as expected of a young child. But he remembers emerging from the Altar with his Blood Opal, his parents beaming and his siblings cheering behind them.

Leevi was the rebel child. His older brother had already been called to serve a nearby village Queen when Leevi decided to take off for the sea. His actual time on board turned out to be limited when he discovered a greater passion for ship design and construction. More than a few Glacian hulls came from his brain and hands, before he began bouncing about the Realm to study shipbuilding in the great ship Territories: Dhemlan, Dharo and Scelt. The travel was an eye-opener both personally and professionally. He saw great beauty and great cruelty. He saw for the first time what lives were like when lived in worship of Mother Night, but without the domination of the Dark Religion. It was the greatest freedom he’d ever known and he reveled in it even as he knew it wouldn’t last forever.

Eventually, his mother called him home. Her Steward had discovered a calling with the Patriarchs and it suited her to have her clever son train to take over the role than corralling some young pup from scratch (who might come with some ambitious young Queen of his own). Leevi was a rebel, but a good son who would never ignore a sincere plea from a mother who needed him. He wrapped up his business and traveled home, resolved to be as good a Steward for Ilsalmi as he’d been a shipwright.

Settling back into home was a bigger adjustment than he’d anticipated. He coped with extended trips into the District, exploring its countryside and hole-in-the-wall places more than he ever had as a young man. It was on one of these rambles that he met a young artist and his wife, who sought his help with a Dark-Jeweled cousin who was cheating them out of profits from the gallery they owned. Leevi ended up buying out the gallery himself. Of course, he knew virtually nothing about art or its business, and sought out the couple on a regular basis for some education and advice. Or at least, that made a nice official excuse.

Per and Marja might have worn light Jewels, but Leevi found it hard to find any flaws in the pair (he’d learn, once the first blush of new love fell off the rose). Per’s lively humor complimented Marja’s brisk competence, leaving Leevi fascinated by the dynamics of their relationship. Their warmth and care made him feel safer and more relaxed than he had in a long time and it would have taken a stronger man than he not to be drawn to them like a moth to the flame. Fortunately for him, they proved to have enough love in their hearts for three and a delightful willingness to experiment. His parents weren’t so thrilled when they found out, still set on a properly advantageous marriage for him. It was virtually the only thing he fought them on since his return to Glacia. They “compromised” by genteely ignoring the relationship so long as he did right by Ilsalmi as its Steward and continued to entertain prospective matches presented to him. Per and Marja (and chance to be ‘Uncle Leevi’ for their sweet daughter) were important touchstones for Leevi as he got his feet under him at the Court and tensions rose around them.

As he dug deeper into the Steward’s office and its records, Leevi also made a startling discovery: neither he nor his siblings were their parents’ natural children. Those, from what he could tell, had been discreetly delivered to an Orphanage of Light after failed Birthrights. For each lost child, a replacement had been searched out and with bribed away from its natural parents or outright seized by a Queen who had the power and Court to make sure a reluctant family could be… properly motivated, and knew it. With some carefully-placed work by her Court Seer, to bend the memories in the developing young minds of the new children and to adjust the memories of their elders now with replacement siblings, none of them were ever the wiser.

He didn’t know what to do with the knowledge. Even the black sheep of the family loved their mother and knew she loved them. She was old now, and frail, and did he really want to upset her by making an accusation? On the other hand, their beloved mother had done wrong. In some cases, horribly wrong. And to think that he might have more family out there… his mind reeled. In the end, he ‘lost’ the files and locked down his thoughts on the subject until he was ready to process the implications therein.

Upon their mother’s death, he finally shared the secret of their parentage with his siblings. Two of them still won’t talk to him- one out of resentment for ‘making up lies’ and the other for holding the truth for too long. Most of the rest seem to have chosen his path and ignore the revelation in their day to day interactions, though one or two have made vague noises about reconnecting with their birth families. He’s pledged his support and that of his office to their efforts if they ask, though for himself he remains undecided.

More urgent was the matter of their mother’s replacement. Bad enough that he must mourn her death, but to realize a new Queen must fill her seat before it grows cold… he did not look forward to the notion. He was, however, proud. He wass his mother’s son and Ilsalmi’s Steward and would not disgrace either position by being obstructive or offering less than his best. By the grace of the Mother she was reputedly young enough that this would be her first ruling position. Frightening, to an experienced Steward, but comforting in that she had no established Triangle with which he must compete for a voice in the Court. He only prayed the new Queen will keep him on long enough to prove himself.

Character in Play:

As the sun touched the horizon, Lady Greta Karjala of Ilsalmi District took one last, ragged breath. Leevi wondered with the grieving and sleep-deprived part of his mind if the Priestess, standing vigil with the Triangles and the rest of the Queen’s brood, could feel her soul as it fled this world for the shelter of the Darkness. Wails and tears rose from the rest of the room as the others also noticed what he’d seen. Leevi buried his face in the neck of one of his sisters as she sought the comfort of his arms to fill his senses with the reality of family left to protect instead of howling over the one now gone.

The Warlord Prince caught a glimpse of his father over her shoulder, the old man still holding his wife’s fragile hand as he murmured comfort to the dead woman through his own tears. Theirs had been a love match and Ilsalmi had had only one Consort through all of Greta’s rule. It had become his golden standard in his own relationships and he ached to have Per and Marja here with him now. But his parents wouldn’t have his Light-Jeweled lovers here, where they might discourage a properly Blessed marriage offer, and he wouldn’t buck their wishes in his mother’s final hours. They might have had their problems, but he’d never questioned their love for him, or failed to respect it.

After a time, the Steward carefully disentangled himself left the rest of the family in silence. Let them have the luxury of mourning however long they needed to. He itched for activity and distraction. Leevi sought his office and performed the duties required of him at this juncture, floating through the process in a numbed sort of haze. There was the District to inform, official mourning to institute (though not, of course, of the duration or scale merited for poor Lady Brenden), and a new Queen to be extended an offer to rule. If only he knew who that would be.

He’d consulted with the rest of the Court and tried to get his mother’s opinion on her potential successor. But the Court favored no particular candidate and his mother had put off the reminder of her mortality until it was too late. Now the choice was his alone. He stared at the files he’d collected on each Lady, thinking hard. Some offered experience, others the good connections of impressive family. What would be best for Ilsalmi?

In the end, he chose because the Lady had a sweet smile in the memory crystal attached to her petition. Because she had an earnest voice that made him marginally less likely to yield to the urge to destroy his office to soothe the howling in his soul as she outlined her qualifications and desire to serve as Ilsalmi’s Queen. He chose to be hopeful that her record of service without rule spoke of a dedicated personality instead of a lazy or faulty one, and despite the possible double-edged sword of her impressive cousin’s regard. All that remained was the invitation he silently scribed in a careful hand:

Lady Riia Lindgren,

The Court of Ilsalmi regrets to report the loss of its late and beloved ruler, Lady Greta Karjala. We would like to extend to you an invitation to take up her seat and tend her people. May you forge a legacy as great.

Prince Leevi Karjala, Steward of Ilsalmi

This was it, then. His last duty, the last official act of the Court of Lady Karjala, for none of them might be offered new contracts. The old Queen was dead, long live the new.  Leevi threw a solid Sapphire shield around the office, laid his head down on his desk, and wept, with only a tumbler of fine whiskey to keep him company. If his underlings had any sense, no one would interrupt him for the rest of the day.
