Personality

Personality:

For someone born into a world of ice and snow, Katarina is a blazing fire set into a witch's body. Her temper almost always runs hot, whether that's with anger or joy, and she will continue to move forward at the risk of burning herself out at the end of the day. Balance is not something that the Black Widow does well, reaching instead for an all-or-nothing desire that pushes her ever forward into the future that she sees for herself and the people of Glacia.

She is a fierce creature that comes back with sharp words and an even sharper intellect crafted over the years she was raised by the aristo elite. The passion which stokes her flame and drives her is something that she was born with, however, and she will attest to that fervently. No one gave her this raging desire to do something more with her life, she decided to do it on her own. To need anyone else to validate who she is seems laughable to Katarina, and the only person she looks to for a sense of reassurance is her Queen.

If there is one more thing that her aristo upbringing has left her with, then it is a streak of pride whose lengths could rival the mountain ranges in Glacia. To hear Katarina apologize for being wrong is a treat if only because it does not happen often, even when she knows she should. Being so stubborn about her own opinions and desires has kept her going when she's felt the pressure to fall into line though, and it has made up a large part of who she is today. Besides, it is all a part of embracing the passionate, aggressive, sensual creature she is.

Black Widows are known for being alluring in many ways, lusting after physical contact and pulling others to them with a sense of sensuality. Katarina is no different from much of her caste in this way, and she utilizes this aspect of her personality as a warrior might use a weapon. At times it is one of the best in her arsenal whenever she needs to draw attention away from her Queen, while at others, it is simply meant to enjoy herself and fall into her most base desires.

One might expect Katarina to have grown up spoiled and demanding for all that she's been blessed with: Dark Jewels, her Caste, and both honed under the care of wealth and stature. In some ways, they wouldn't be wrong. Katarina is a creature of desire who loves to fulfill her whims, but she believes at her core that everyone deserves to be happy, and equally so. Others trying to control her own actions and options in life rankles her greatly, and this disdain extends to how others are treated. Having Darker Jewels is no excuse for treating someone else as if they are incapable of handling their own life. It is this belief that formed the foundation for her disagreement with the Dark Religion.

At her worst, Katarina is not just a prideful and stubborn individual burning herself at both ends, but someone who decisively uses these traits as she was taught; becoming the manipulative spider waiting on her web. She can become tireless in her schemes, free of remorse in her decisions, and dangerous when turning toward manipulative tactics. Perhaps it is a good thing that this part of her personality is most often spent on helping the Underground or traversing the intricacies of court life.

Likes:
  • Riding: Katarina found a love for horses and riding even before she met her Queen, having learned how to ride at a young age thanks to the lessons that her great aunt deemed appropriate. Much of the riding she learned was about being proper and eloquent though, but it has always been the thrill of jumping and riding out in the forests that Kat loves the most.

  • Physicality: Touch is something that comes naturally to Katarina, whether that is to crave it or give it to another. She conveys much with her body as well, drawing on a Black Widow's natural sensuality to pull others to her with a sense of allure. She's a very physical creature that desires the warmth of another and reassurance she can feel rather than the kind she can hear.

  • Theater: From the time she was a little girl, Kat has loved the theater. The arts were a large part of her upbringing, but it was always the stories put on by actors and actresses that she adored the most, and which she enjoyed dabbling in as well during her younger days. It's bled over to more day-to-day theatrics as well. Katarina has a flare for the dramatic, especially when it comes to drawing attention to herself or a distraction.

    Dislikes:
  • Loneliness: As one might expect of someone who puts so much stock in their physical nature, being alone cuts deeply into Katarina. It doesn't help that she feels as if she hasn't been alone, truly alone, a day in her life. There has always been someone close by, either as adopted family, assigned escort, or chosen friend. As a result, the witch hates solitude and silence.

  • Being Made to Wait: There is a big difference between choosing to wait and being made to wait. Katarina has patience a plenty when it comes to waiting for something she's chosen to pursue. Someone else telling her when to wait and when to act, especially if they chide her for her resulting impatience, however, will quickly earn the bristling, dangerous parts of a Black Widow's nature.

  • Children: Don't get her wrong, Katarina doesn't hate children, she just doesn't want them to be her responsibility. When she gets to dote on a child or ward of the court as an older sister figure, she's perfectly fine with them. That's because she gets to give them back though, and usually she's content to do so with their bellies full of sweets and a mischievous smile on her lips.

    Fears:
  • Being Caught: The fear of being caught working with the Underground ties into many other fears that Katarina has: her Jewels and chalice being broken, not receiving a full death, leaving the people she cares for behind. It is the first two of these that she's most afraid of, dreading the possibility of living the rest of her life, or what lies beyond it, as half a person.

  • Losing Someone: In particular, Katarina is afraid of losing someone that she's meant to be helping in the Underground. The idea that she may grow close to someone she's trying to help, feel for them and care for them outside of a sense of duty, only to have them cut down during their escape for freedom keeps her somewhat distanced from those she works with. It's easier when she can move on from the failures. It keeps her from wanting to avenge their deaths.

  • Failing her Queen: Katarina's Queen is her best friend and the closest confidante she's ever had. More than that, however, Sloane has become the epitome of everything that Kat has built her life around now. Seer. Dowager. Friend. To fail her Queen is to fail herself, to lose everything she has worked for, and to admit defeat, which is something that Katarina does not do well.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Illusion Webs: Katarina's strength in illusions began with her playing with whimsy Craft as a child, and from there it only flourished into more and more complex webs as she settled into her caste. The more elaborate or intricate the web, the more fun it is for her as she pieces together all the physical and psychic aspects that must go into a believable illusion. She's worked toward drawing out these illusions for as long as she can as well, building on her stamina and timing.

  • Delivery Webs: What Katarina's enjoyed most about creating her illusions is being able to hide them in seemingly harmless objects, or in people themselves, digging them deep into someone's mind so that they are difficult to sense. It's helped her in her work with Sloane and the Underground as well, providing a way to shield someone's Jewels or self with illusion webs attached to their person so that they can skitter under the radar.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Mind Healing: Katarina's more suited to placing things into a mind to alter it than to put it back together and heal its cracks. She doesn't have the tenderness and finesse needed to weave the pieces back together, and has never had much of an interest in the work to begin with. Ask her to break apart someone's mind or place something on a Delivery Web inside of someone and she can do, but fixing the emotional and psychological damage is simply beyond her capabilities.

  • Inner Barriers: A secret that she keeps very carefully is how vulnerable her inner barriers are. It is seldom that she ever lets anyone past the outermost portion of her Self. When someone does manage to slip in, or be let in, however, they will find that it's quite easy to get to the very center of her mind and her chalice. Despite trying to fortify them, Katarina has never been able to muster the same sort of shields and barriers that others can. Her outermost defense is her only defense, and she keeps it up at all times because of that.

    History:

Katarina didn't know her parents for all that long. Orkovvi and Jyri Halonen were Light Jeweled, working class despite having a distant relation to the aristo populace, and altogether seemed unimportant and insignificant in the wider array of Glacian society. They were overjoyed to have been blessed with a baby girl that they named Katarina, even if she seemed to have been born without a Caste, and raised her with adoration up until the day of her Birthright ceremony. That was when things ultimately changed.

The little witch went into the Darkness, guided by the Priestess' hand, and made her initial descent. The Jewel she opened her eyes to was the Purple Dusk, and within a matter of days a mysterious figure showed up on their doorstep with pocket watch in hand and a muttered scolding about how they were already late. Katarina, all of eight years old, was removed from her family and put into the care and guidance of Cecilia Jeravano, her own surname cast aside for the old Black Widow's as was customary for any of the Dark Jeweled children she took in.

At the time, three other children had been brought to Lady Jeravano's estate as well, and it was with Edvin, Inkeri, and Tarja that Katarina was raised throughout a large majority of her life. They were taught etiquette and Protocol, art and history, whatever seemed to be proper for a young aristo, for that was what they became the moment that Lady Jeravano took them for her own. Out of all the children though, it was Katarina that could trace her blood back to the Black Widow's family, and it was also Katarina who sprouted a tiny fang when she experienced her first moontime.

She remembers praise having been given to her that day, but also a new set of rules and lessons as she was prepared to leave once more, this time for the Hourglass Coven. It was there that Katarina flourished the most, utilizing the things she still was taught when she visited home to navigate the intricacies of Glacian aristocracy and society. Though she had never been power hungry, there was a fair amount of ambition that was groomed within her, tempering the mischief and playfulness that had been more present as a young girl.

Lady Jeravano took her 'great nieces' Virgin Nights very seriously, ensuring that they all would meet with someone trusted and who wore Dark Jewels to secure their power. Where some of her peers might have grown uncertain in the face of the ceremony, Katarina took to it as if she had been born to work at a Red Moon House, enjoying the game of pleasure and carnal desire that felt as natural to her as being a Black Widow was. It was all a part of growing into herself, and she took to her Offering with that same sort of attitude, reaching into the Darkness a second time, deep within herself and making a full descent to the Sapphire.

It was then that she took her first job as a Court Seer, signing on with a village in the district of Nivalla under Lady Halston, a young Queen of about the same age. Katarina greeted her like a friend, feeling a connection in the other witch's spirit, and the two became friends over the years that they worked together. From time to time, Katarina would return back to the Jeravano estate to visit with her family, but always she would return to serve at her Queen's side, having made her choice. That decision was tested when she found out about Sloane's dealings with the Underground movement and her work to get Light Jeweled Blood out of Glacia.

She wasn't sure how to feel about it at first. To say that she was unconcerned would be a lie, which she'd promised to not do with her Queen. Instead, she spoke freely about her worries, but also about her own reservations where the Dark Religion was concerned. Primarily, Katarina found it stifling in what it allowed and forbade for the Blood, particularly the Lighter Jeweled, and disagreed with the treatment of Light Jeweled Blood that had started to take root in Glacia. She asked for some time to think over how she felt about this new information, and in the end, Katarina returned with a request to be at her Queen's side in this as well.

The Black Widow began to weave her illusions into more and more subtle and intricate webs, placing them into minds and onto people to help the process along. The work was rewarding in its own way, and Katarina settled into her role as Seer, juggling the two lives she led. It wasn't always easy, particularly when grief hit her Queen hard as it did with the death of her Bonded male. Katarina was there for that too though, offering whatever strength to the grieving witch she could, and staying at her side as Sloane ascended to the role of District Queen.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:

A frosted glance settled over her, daring Kat to speak out of place, to move before she was allowed to, and yet, the teen stared back with an equal amount of passion burning in her eyes. If Lady Jeravano was ice and steel, then she was the fire which would melt it. This was not something she was willing to negotiate on, and perhaps it was only because the old witch knew that the girl would ultimately do it anyway that she finally sighed and backed down. Katarina didn't miss the way that the woman's lips twitched at the side of her mouth, so small and seemingly insignificant a movement that most would have missed it entirely.

She and the other children who had been raised at the Black Widow's estate knew better though, and that small twitch was about as much praise as they'd ever get unless they somehow exceeded expectations. Which, considering where the woman's expectations lay, was nearly impossible. The last time she'd done it was when she had sprouted her snake tooth. Katarina hadn't been able to do it since. She didn't lack in satisfaction though as she smiled back, brighter and far more obvious with a cheshire grin. "It is a deal then. If I can make an illusion that you believe, then I can join my friends on their trip."

All of sixteen, Katarina was impulsive to be sure, but she also took calculated risks. Lady Jeravano might have had years as a Black Widow, but her strengths were not in illusory Craft, and her mind was not what it used to be. She had worked for days on one web - just the one, though woven over and over again until she was sure it was right - which had been tucked away in the woman's jewelry box. It was three hours later when she was waiting for Lady Jeravano to meet with she and the other children for their outing that a surge of power could be felt rising up in alarm. Edvin, bless his heart, raced up to the woman's quarters to see what was going on, while Tarja and Inkeri looked toward their sister questioningly.

"What did you do this time?"

Inkeri's lips were pressed together in a line that looked terribly unpleasant on her already pinched face, which was exactly what Kat told her in a silken voice as she slipped her arm through Tarja's and made for the door. She ignored the terse questions which followed them out as the youngest of the witches pursued, but Inkeri had always tried to grasp at an advantage, digging at vulnerability and pulling at straws until her hands bled. A narrowed glance was swept over the Casteless witch as Katarina turned over her shoulder.

"Nothing short of what she asked for," she began. Anything else she might have said about the matter was cut off by the arrival of Lady Jeravano escorted by Edvin. If anyone else less astute or less understanding of the woman's behaviors had tried to look at her now, she would have appeared to be as she always did. Katarina saw beyond that though, diving for the vulnerability like a dog let loose during a hunt, and gave the same falsely sweet smile she had when the deal had been struck. "I take it you've had a chance to think about our earlier discussion?"

Oh joyous Night, how she loved the poisonous look that the woman shot back at her.
