Home Territory: Dea al Mon

Appearance

Play By: Poppy Drayton
Distinguishing Features: Her hair color is something to note, if only because it isn't the blonde that would be expected of someone from her bloodline. Instead of inheriting her mother's aristo coloring, she wound up with the dark brown that obviously stems from her father's side of lineage. Also, she tends to romp around in nothing short of full exploration and/or combat attire pretty much all the time. Are there dresses and outfits more befitting of a Dea al Mon Queen in her closet? Maybe, potentially... but they've been collecting dust since forever ago now.

Personality

Personality:

Anyone who meets Virtuosa discovers shortly within a mere conversation or observation of her that she is incredibly aptly named. A Queen with a hero complex beyond compare, the notion of which is only surpassed by her fierce determination to enact upon that very complex. Years of indulging in fantastical adventure stories and mythical tales of derring-do have undoubtedly made her this way, along with the encouragement of this behavior from practically all of her loved ones.

She possesses an unflappable sense of justice and an extremely black-and-white view of the moral spectrum. There is good and there is bad, shades of gray don't exist to this idealistic woman. Sadly, this tends to leave her conflicted when she actually does encounter people within the gray area that she so vehemently disregards. It leaves her unsure of where to categorize them in her head and as such puts them in a precarious place as far as her trust is concerned. In turn, this has made her... not necessarily distrustful of people by default, but certainly far slower to reward people with the full extent of her good faith until she's discerned where they fall within her mindset of heroes versus villains.

To earn her trust fully is to have a steadfast and courageous friend for life, but to break that trust is to likely find yourself as a sworn enemy and to-date there's been no sort of redemption path one can take to recover from that.

Virtuosa is... something of an oddity as far as her caste goes, especially for a Dea al Mon. She is rough-and-tumble against the prim-and-proper of other Queens, she lacks the tactful, courtly graces and the political acuity expected of her most of the time. Those things instead having been replaced with blunt words, stubborn (and often unpopular) opinions, and an attitude as sharp as the honed edge of her favorite blade. The desire to tend to both land and people resonates within her desperately, but she has no desire to sit around idly and rule over others with flowery, duplicitous words and trudge through murky, diplomatic waters. She would much rather charge into battle alongside them and guide them in that manner despite society's expectations that she not do that.

And really, in her mind, why shouldn't she be allowed to? If she is of the ruling caste and someone whose notions are to be respected and held as law, then why should the method in which she wants to care for her people and her home be called into question simply because it differs from the norm? It's in these instances that she often laments not being born one of the other female castes - they have so much more freedom and so many of them don't even realize it, or they take it for granted!

By all standards, the young Queen is, well... still young. Life is a journey and hers is still within the early chapters. She makes mistakes, she's prone to rash decisions, doesn't always look before she leaps and has a propensity for not following advice she's given even if she's the one who asked for it to begin with. She has her doubts and her insecurities about many things, though many of these circulate around her loved ones and the same societal norms that she opts to shirk. Her Bonded are connected to her, yes, but they aren't obligated to serve her. And what if they find they would rather not? What if they want a more poised and regal sort of Queen?

Her relationship with her mother has been strained since she was born and appears to have no remedy, what if the cause has been her all along and others follow suit with Majesty's mindset? Additionally, these things tend to leave her somewhat emotionally distant as far as romantic endeavors go, not because she doesn't want them but because she's concerned that somehow she just won't end up being good enough. Naturally, these aren't things that she regularly voices or acts upon, but they do flit around in the back of her mind frequently enough to warrant her acknowledgment of them.

Gregarious, optimistic, headstrong, full of seemingly boundless energy and life, Virtuosa is irrefutably a force of nature to be reckoned with, faults and all. A true Child of the Wood still very much within the prime of her lifespan and determined to lift everyone else around her up as well - whether they like it or not.

Likes:
  • Fantasy Novels. Ever since she was old enough to have stories read/told to her and read on her own, these have been her go-to genre of choice - the more fantastical the better. While Dea al Mon is fairly mystical in its own right, she enjoys the escapism and adventures that these tales provide. Furthermore, they've inspired much of her personality and sense of adventure and heroism. The good guys always win, valiantly vanquishing any foe they encounter no matter the odds. Which is exactly what she plans to do against the Brood.
  • Combat. The fact that Queens aren't typically supposed to be exposed to this sort of training is not something Virtuosa has ever cared for or regarded. As she sees herself the heroine of her adventure story, this was a necessity from the start in her mind. That being the case, she has always (and continues to) relentlessly badgered the likes of her father, Fenor, the Master of the Guard, and any of her Bonded to teach her anything and everything they know about weaponry, martial skills and Offensive/Combat-related Craft.
  • The Red Cloaks. She admires them as much as she envies them. It's always been a sore subject that she was forbidden from joining these ranks because of her caste. (How can someone be filled with too much fury? That's the whole point of combat!) At any rate, she has always looked up to these valiant and powerful women and has every intention of fighting alongside them, even if she isn't officially one of them.

Dislikes:
  • Her Mother. Virtuosa loves her mother as she's still family no matter what, but liking her is another matter entirely. Majesty has always been cold and detached towards her no matter how hard she strove to impress the older Queen and earn her affection. Ardent (and Fenor, additionally) were generally always much more present and warm both during her childhood and even today. This rift between mother and daughter has only seemed to widen as she's gotten older, even despite the way her mother indulges her fancies of combat training and Brood-slaying.
  • Court and Politics. Boring. Absolute snoozefest and she hates it. She's essentially only within her mother's First Circle by default of being Majesty's daughter and because those around her insist that the experience and training is proper and necessary. It's begrudgingly that she performs the tasks required of a courtier and she'd almost always rather be sparring or adventuring, but Virtuosa is dutiful enough to not shirk these responsibilities. Additionally, if there are ever any tasks that require a traveling liaison to another court or part of Dea al Mon she's always quick to volunteer.
  • Fire. Dea al Mon is, in and of itself, a massive forest. A simple spark could turn into a raging wildfire at the drop of a hat if someone is being particularly careless (or intentionally malicious) and she has no desire to see her home burn right to the ground. There was also a mishap when she was younger and learning how to conjure up witchfire that adds to this unease as it nearly caused injury to several bystanders.

Fears:
  • Having to Rule. It's practically her birthright to end up ruling some section of her homeland, with her mother ruling Esgarth and having the connection to Lady Galoneth that she does. Majesty won't live forever and she knows the situation will eventually arise. She feels the subtle nature in which both Quietus and her father try to instill that sense of responsibility within her, but she doesn't want it. There are a multitude of ways to help both the people and the land with her caste, she doesn't think she needs to be sitting upon a ruling throne to do so. Furthermore, what if she's just plain awful at it? What good would come from her running some village or District or Province into the ground, however unintentionally?
  • Additional Losses. Virtuosa has already lost one of her treasured Bonded to the enemy. Strife having gotten ill from the Waste and taking up the lifestyle and rituals provided by the Broodmother. It pains her greatly, moreso because she can still feel the connection in her soul. Their Queen Bond was not severed by the Warlord Prince's transformation and it remains as strong as ever, but she can't bear the notion of what Strife has become since joining the Brood. So unlike himself and so unnatural to what the Dea al Mon are as a people. That sort of emotional and spiritual pain of watching someone so close to her suffer or change violently is not an experience she wishes to repeat with any of her other loved ones.
  • For Her Father. Something is... off with Ardent. As of recently he's been behaving more than a little strangely, having lapses of movement and memory both that are far more befitting of a Dea al Mon in their twilight years, much older than her father is at present. These moments have been sporadic and spread-out in their frequency thus far, but she fears the progression of whatever might be ailing him. As much as she'd like to label it as a temporary thing she isn't entirely sold on that and constantly worries that it may be far more permanent and grave than they realize.

Craft Strengths:
  • Land Sense. Virtuosa has been exceptionally in tune with this sect of Queenly Craft ever since she was a girl. She's able to navigate the lay of the land by instinct alone and effortlessly so, even in areas that she's never visited; she's never gotten lost or turned around. Being able to maneuver both herself and those who accompany her without so much as a second thought is handy in both getting a jump on enemies who don't possess such an ability, as well as evading and hiding if they're chased. Things like mineral deposits or gemstone veins, bodies of water, natural (or unnatural) landmarks, etc. also don't escape her notice thanks to this proficiency.
  • Finishing Kills. The Brood are powerful and persistent foes, dealing with them undoubtedly requires more attention and care than the norm. Virtuosa has tackled this sect of Craft for precisely that reason. Able to channel such spells through whatever weapon she happens to have in-hand at the time, it's one of the measures she takes to ensure that once an enemy is down and dead, they stay that way.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Geas. Much to her - and surely her mother's - chagrin, Virtuosa is entirely lacking in the ability to evoke what is usually considered commonplace Craft for Queens of Dea al Mon. She's attempted it on many occasions throughout her life and each attempt has been a failure, with the spell either dissipating well before its supposed to or just having no effect at all on the intended target. This sort of thing, when she needs to use it, tends to be deferred to one of her Bonded who happens to be a Prince with a knack for Contract Craft.
  • Breaking Mind Barriers. She doesn't care for the idea of forcing one's way into someone else's mind, it strikes her as far too villainous and unnecessary to breach someone's inner sanctum without their consent or invitation to do so. Thus her training in this is the bare minimum and she's never pursued it further. She's tried for the sake of practicing on a couple occasions but found herself hitting a mental brick wall regardless of how much jewel strength she expended, only resulting in giving herself intense headaches.

History:

One would've thought Majesty Illion would've been downright giddy to have a daughter who shared her caste. Her youngest child being someone she could train, pass down her legacy and leadership of Esgarth Province to when she was old enough. Most Queen mothers surely would have, but Majesty had proven many times over the years that she was neither "most Queens" nor "most mothers." Thus, her last child's birth and development of her caste was instead unwelcome, met with aloofness and ice from the very get-go.

Virtuosa hadn't noticed this until she was a bit older, though. Despite the young girl's countless attempts to make her mother proud of her and gain her affection in some manner, any manner, it all proved to be fruitless and it was around the time of her Birthright Ceremony that she simply stopped trying to do so. Instead accepting the denial of a mother's love at a much younger age than anyone should have. It was fine, though, in her mind. She had her siblings, her father Ardent doted on her endlessly and there was also Quietus (though he would always be Fenor to her), who was much the same.

The same but different, she was informed when she was old enough to have the Queen Bond explained to her. He'd been her first Bonded, the mystical connection snapping into place while she was still little more than a squalling infant, though it did certainly explain her unusual predisposition for trying to trail after him constantly when she was small. As much as it was explained, so was the fact that she absolutely had to keep it secret and especially from her mother, as he was bound by contract to her court and it would've simply made things messy. (There was also the factor of her ever-growing jealousy, but that was another matter.)

So no, between all the people who did love the Queen during her formative years and beyond, it was infinitely much easier to deal with the one who did not. She'd been determined to thrive and forge her own path regardless, moreso when the outbreak of the Waste began to rise and rumors of monstrous creatures known as Brood started swirling around the forest Territory. Always having been a fanciful reader, these tales about the Brood reminded Virtuosa of the villains in her favorite novels and from then on she was insistent upon the fact that the Dea al Mon were the heroes who were tasked with slaying and redeeming these foul creatures.

So it was then that the young Queen figured out what her legacy was meant to be: she would help champion her people and help them defeat the Brood.

A task, while grandiose and seemingly unlikely, she was determined to see through. Although one made difficult in that Queens weren't typically permitted to the sort of training required to do such a thing. She wasn't allowed to join the Red Cloaks when she was of age, that much she'd been told upfront, and finding people who would actually help her seemed slightly more difficult than she expected. Her father and Fenor were the first of those she'd managed to convince into the antics, though they were wary they knew she couldn't be dissuaded.

Others followed after. Other Bonded she ended up acquiring as she got older were of course more than willing to offer their aid to their Queen's cause, even Majesty had changed her tune when the endeavor was mentioned to her (for reasons unknown to Virtuosa, but she'd never thought to ask anyway). While her mother didn't warm to her any more than she ever had, she had no issue using her political clout and social status to call in favors owed to her that would benefit her daughter in such training and guidance.

This was how the years passed. Between her martial training, required attendance within her mother's court and that of her caste training, the years between Birthright Ceremony and Offering flew by, as did the years that followed into the present. Her experience didn't remain all theoretical, much to the panic of those around her. There have been some skirmishes with those that align themselves with the Brood, and whether or not the Queen's victories were due to the skill of herself and those that followed her or sheer, dumb luck remains to be seen (depends on who you were to ask, really), but thus far her conquest has been successful.

Will it remain that way? Only time will tell, but with the recent passing of her 25th birthday she is as bound and determined as ever to be the heroine that her people deserve.

Character in Play:

"Leave it alone, Virtuosa."

Arbutus' words from several feet behind her didn't register within Virtuosa's mind right away, too busy she'd been staring out across the expanse of the grove that made up some of Esgarth's Province Seat. Unblinking except in long intervals, fingers curled tightly around the metal railing of the terrace that she was leaning against. She'd been deep in contemplation, her thoughts having shifted inwardly to her psyche and the few chords that consisted of her Bonded. Though on this night it was one in particular she was fixated on, much as she usually was when this mood struck her.

Strife.

It had been a year since she lost the Warlord Prince to the Waste, since he decided to solve his ailment by succumbing to the machinations of the Brood. She'd have rather he just died from his illness. At least that way she wouldn't be forced to think of him out there. Every kill, every surge of emotion he probably felt from whatever he enacted at the Broodmother's behest reverberating within the recesses of her imagination as clearly as if he were still whole and with her instead of the twisted creature he'd become.

At least if he'd died he could've been mourned properly, the grieving process able to be worked through. The severing of a Bond via death was not a pleasant experience, she'd been told, but at least that was a pain that would've faded over time. One that would've been far easier to accept and cope with rather than what remained between them now. Instead it was a daily reminder of how she failed to protect one of her own. A reminder of what she'd now be forced to do; because now she'd have to kill him herself.

Frankly? She didn't know if she'd be able to.

Until that moment came all she could do was lament. Lament and strum hopelessly at their connection while trying to figure out if there was another way to fix what had been broken. She could've went out to find him if she wanted to. The Brood were becoming far more prominent in their attacks and their presence lately, and there were many days in which the urge to seek him out regardless of the obvious dangers were stronger than her sense of caution (which was already not terribly high to begin with). Days exactly like this one, in fact.

"Leave. It. Alone." Arbutus repeated more sharply as his gaze bore into her back, for he knew exactly what she was thinking about, knew exactly the considerations and the guilt that was circling within her mind right then. He would have none of it and certainly wouldn't allow her to indulge in such folly.

The second time seemed to be the charm, thankfully, Virtuosa spinning around on a heel and suddenly affecting the expression of a toddler who'd been caught with their hand in the cookie jar. "I wasn't doing anything," she hissed in response. A lie, they both knew it to be; and the arched, blonde eyebrow from her Princely companion conveyed as much.

Instead of arguing or calling her out on either the lie or what she was dwelling on again, he seemed satisfied enough that he'd gotten her attention away from her reverie. "You should sleep. We have to be up early," he rumbled before moving to make his departure, leaving his Queen alone with her thoughts and the peaceful nighttime sounds under the presumption that she'd simply follow and listen for once.
