Appearance

Distinguishing Features:
Vevina is missing half of the ring finger on her right hand.

Personality

Personality:
While Vevina’s Rose Jewel does not grant her the same power or intensity that darker-Jeweled Widows have, she typifies the caste’s enigmatic, passionate, mercurial nature.

She does not speak and her expression is typically unreadable, with pale eyes that look through people rather than at them. She is kind to those she likes and ambivalent towards most others, preferring not to spend energy on people and things that don't concern her.

When her calm breaks, it does so explosively and without control, rage or terror or grief riding her until she is exhausted and empty.

While Vevina can be inattentive and distractible, the topics that matter to her or catch her interest are the subject of intense focus and passion. She throws herself completely into whatever facet of her work or hobbies is at the front of her mind and will get irritated if something distracts her. She is fiercely proud of what is hers and even more fiercely protective of it; this is most apparent in how she interacts with those in her care.

The Black Widow’s affection towards her charges is neither maternal nor objectifying; rather, it is somewhere between one’s relationship with a dear friend and a beloved pet. The people she is responsible for are delicate if not fragile. Vevina sees anything that threatens their safety as a personal transgression and does not react gently to her work being disturbed. If a charge wanders off on their own or hurts themself, it is because Vevina has made a mistake that she needs to rectify. If an outsider so much as upsets one of them, they are a threat to everything she has worked to create and there will be consequences.

Likes:
  • Her wards. Once she decides a person is hers, Vevina develops an intense sense of loyalty and obligation to them. When she was a child this often led to her overwhelming and alienating her few friends, but she has learned to channel this attention into keeping those in her care safe and happy.
  • Fibercraft. Growing up in a fishing fleet, Vevina learned all manner of sailing knots and was skilled at net repair and decorative ropework. She has since expanded to related crafts; she prides herself in weaving Widow’s Webs which are as beautiful as they are functional, and is  always carrying some bit of macrame, braiding or knitting.
  • The Sea. Vevina is as comfortable on the water as she is on land, and infinitely freer. The ocean is vast and beautiful in ways that make her believe she is one breath away from understanding the true nature of all things; chaos and silence and oneness all surging with the tides. Living where she cannot see and hear and smell it every day has left a void in her, and someday she hopes to make her home on the shore once again.

    Dislikes:
  • Speaking. Vevina is able to communicate verbally, she just won't do it unless there is no other option. No matter how many times she practices a phrase in her head, she feels like she is forcing the words out and will stammer, jumble syllables or say something entirely different than she intended. She much prefers to communicate psychically or through writing whenever possible.
  • Landen. Their antagonism towards the Blood, especially in Dharo, combined with superstition about Black Widows has caused its share of conflict in Vevina's life, but her discomfort around Landen is more personal than that. Even when they are accepting and kind, the inability to communicate psychically means it takes much longer for Vevina to make herself understood and their lack of psychic scent means she must rely on physical and vocal cues instead of emotional projections.
  • Loud noises. Vevina’s senses are all delicate and easily overwhelmed, her hearing most so. Unexpected sounds can be distracting to the point that she has difficulty stringing together thoughts, and she cannot process what she hears if there is much else going on.

    Fears:
  • The Twisted Kingdom. Vevina had some terrifying experiences when she was young and untrained that she has never been entirely able to move past. She's also seen some of the worst of what can happen to a Black Widow who was careless or unlucky enough to be lost in its paths, and is sure that if she ventured far she would never find her way back.
  • Small spaces. Once her caste became apparent, Vevina was sequestered below deck whenever the fleet docked, usually alone and always afraid of what would happen if she were discovered or if her family didn’t come back. Though the substance of these fears no longer haunt her, if she's in an enclosed area with no fresh air or easy escape then the feelings return.
  • Self-reliance. Vevina went from the security of her family to the security of the Coven. She has come to rely on the support and structure provided by her sisters in Westwood; alone, she would need to find her own place and make her own way, which feels impossible some days.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Whimsy Craft Webs. Vevina is adept at Illusion Craft and Illusion Webs in general, and has a particular skill in making durable, intricate Webs that create abstract patterns of light and sound. They rarely have the practical applications of more realistic illusions, but have the simpler function of bringing pleasure to their beholder.
  • Communication Craft. Vevina uses psychic threads and projections constantly when interacting with other Blood. She can form complete sentences more easily than with verbal speech, but communicates most quickly and precisely using scattered words combined with images and flashes of emotion.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Visions. Vevina’s fear of the Twisted Kingdom has brought her to avoid dealing in this aspect of Widow Craft beyond what was required in her training. When she does have Visions, Vevina finds their cryptic, vague nature incredibly frustrating and has no skill at all in drawing useful information out of the Darkness’s symbols and metaphors.
  • Vanishing and Calling In Items. She is able to vanish objects easily, but it takes focus and concentration to call them back. She often loses track of what objects she has stored in her psychic cabinet, or transports them to a location without mentally registering where that is.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Iona O’Clery, Blood Female (age 72, b. 121 AP)
    Father: Dalach O’Clery, Blood Male (deceased; b. 119 AP, d. 188 AP)
    Siblings:
  • Ruadh O’Clery, Blood Male (age 50, b. 143 AP)
  • Saoirse O’Clery, Blood Female (age 33, b. 160 AP)
History:
Vevina was born in Illanagall Quay, Blood village tucked among the cliffs of Wexol in the south of Scelt. She was a quiet infant who delighted in being near the sea and on her family's small fleet of fishing boats, securely swaddled against her mother's chest. As she grew, the young witch’s silent, watchful nature was increasingly marred by tantrums and screaming fits. She was slow to walk, reached her second birthday without speaking a single word, and seemed more comfortable among the boat dogs than among other people. Other families might have labeled Vevina a slow or difficult child, forcibly correcting her behavior or simply ignoring her. The more superstitious might even name her a Changeling, with her deep gaze, clever fingers and lack of instinct for interacting with other folk. In her family, however, she was not she first among her cousins to have similar struggles, and the others managed fine. Vevina interacted with her world with intelligence and curiosity, and would find her place in it. She just needed time and patience.

Vevina and her family used a combination of gesture, pantomime and adapted naval hand signals to communicate, helped along by Vevina's affinity for manipulating her psychic scent, projecting different emotions than she felt to convey her thoughts. Eventually, she taught herself to form rudimentary Psychic Threads even without a Jewel.

Vevina had gone out with the fleet through her entire life, and with time she gained responsibilities. Some upset her so much she was unable to do anything for hours after, and her parents would console her and find something else for her to do. She had always been clever with rope, and when her cousin showed her how to repair one of their bait nets her heart was captured. As she grew older Vevina settled into her role with the fleet, doing what she was capable of and doing it well. Everything changed with Vevina’s Birthright Ceremony. Most of her family didn’t wear Jewels, and the White felt like an enormous well of power. More than that, it gave her a voice. Psychic communication didn’t catch in her chest the way spoken words did when she tried to force them out, and she studied and practiced fervently to improve her skill.

Vevina’s work and studies propelled her into adolescence, but before long her psychic scent began taking on the edge of a Black Widow. Her life changed just as abruptly as it had following her Birthright. The family who had always encouraged her and given her space to be the person she was meant to be suddenly were controlling every detail of her life. She wasn’t allowed to go out alone, then she wasn’t allowed to go out at all. At home she was confined to a few rooms, and when the fleet was docked elsewhere she was locked in a hold below deck. She was constantly surrounded by the psychic scents of fear and uncertainty, without really understanding why. The lines between Vevina’s autonomy and her parents’ wills had been shattered and redrawn too many times, and she felt more lost every time one of her many new rules changed.

When her mother had another daughter, Vevina withdrew and resigned herself to things never changing. She comforted herself during the long hours locked away practicing Craft and fiberwork. Witchlight became dancing stars and colorful ribbons, then more complex illusions. She rarely mimicked reality, finding solace in elegantly flowing shapes and fractaled patterns instead. Her family, who had been so proud of every other piece of Craft she learned, were troubled when they caught her playing with light.

As her Snake Tooth grew in, Vevina struggled to remember to milk it regularly. Usually she could do it even if it was painful, but there was  one time that she couldn’t. She put it off, sure she would gain the willpower to milk the crystallizing poison with time, too scared and ashamed to tell her family. By the time they found out, it was impacted and their daughter was ill; there was nothing the Healer could do but remove the finger, and the secret of Vevina’s caste was out. She thought that this would mean the rules and fear would lift—if everyone knew about her, there was no point in working to keep her a secret—but her family closed in around her even tighter. it was decided that she would be sent to live with a distant member of Clan Clery in Dharo, where the stigma against Black Widows was less severe. Before Vevina had processed what was happening, she was on an unfamiliar boat and Scelt was farther beyond the horizon than it had ever been.

Vevina didn't know how she would survive away from her family, but the Clansmen she had been sent to took her in with open arms and her new sisters in the Coven understood her in ways her family had never been able to. When people in Illanagall Quay had learned of Vevina’s caste, there had been whispers of we always knew that child was odd, but the Widows here didn't seem to share her difficulties with language and interaction the way some of her extended family had. Instead, they were like her in other ways.

She had never learned Craft in such a structured way, and she was full of questions and eager to learn in almost every class. The Twisted Kingdom still terrified her and she was mediocre when dealing with poisons, but illusions came naturally to her and she enjoyed weaving Webs. She had only been taught the most necessary bits of Protocol as a child, and she began to rely on what she learned as she navigated the social landscapes of a larger city and the Coven.

Years passed. Vevina made friends, fell in love, made her Offering, progressed from student to teacher, and fell out of love. She began watching over the Black Widows of the Coven who were lost in the Twisted Kingdom or had damaged Chalices; she had always been drawn to them, and often they just needed someone who would listen to them talk and make sure they ate and didn't wander off. To help ground and calm them, Vevina wove soothing scents, sounds and emotions into illusion webs with shimmering clouds or slowly-morphing shapes. When her inspiration surpassed the needs of her wards, she made decorations for other members of the Coven or sold them to wealthy Blood who collected Craft art or who just enjoyed the pieces.

Vevina’s life developed longer and longer patterns with few significant interruptions until she received an unexpected letter from Little Terreille. Rayne Callis, a former student and the niece of her oldest friend in Dharo. She was now the Court Seer at a Province Court, and the skill set that had led Vevina to carve out her own niche in Westwood made her the ideal candidate for a position at a new school in Rockland.

Vevina didn’t come to a decision immediately. She had built a life where she was, with friends and acquaintances and people who depended on her, but she had also learned long ago not to let fear of change keep her from a life that might be better. She exchanged letters with Rayne, gathering details and making arrangements as she organized her affairs in Dharo and prepared her charges for her departure.

Character in Play:

Vevina closed her eyes and pressed her forehead to a smooth wood wall, her fingers tracing the grain as she hummed at it in thanks. This place had been a good home, and she was sad to be leaving, but it had not been her first home and it had never felt like it would be her last. Her spontaneous Visions were as impenetrable as ever, but they had started coming more frequently since she decided to leave for Little Terreille. A beautiful, unusual leaf or a porcelain bowl she did not recognize would impress itself on her consciousness, always accompanied by a wordless call.

Hello. Almost here. Almost home. Hello.

Throughout her life, Vevina’s glimpses into the future had left her disoriented and scared, but these messages enveloped her in a feeling of determination and peace. She knew, instinctively, that there were not simple prophetic visions, but she never detected malice in them so she regarded them with only a cursory suspicion.

She stepped back from the wall with a deep, slow exhale, her eyes scanning the mostly-barren room. The furniture belonged to the Coven, so it would remain, but all of Vevina’s personal effects were gone. The books, the handmade blankets, the gifts she had collected over the years. The blue, green and gray tapestry that had hung on the wall, woven with a spell so that, when charged, it would fill the room with a gentle, salty breeze.

She paced the room slowly and meticulously, looking for any small thing she might have overlooked while she mentally cycled through every security web and shield she had laid in the residence, checking that each had either been removed or rekeyed. There were Widows who could break any of her spells if she forgot one, but she preferred to be thorough and this was her last chance to catch anything.

“Lady Vevina?”

She jerked at the unexpected voice. The spells that told her when someone entered her room had been the last she had disabled, and she hadn’t heard a knock or the door opening. An apprentice Black Widow and former pupil named Hortense stood in the doorway, her hands clasped tightly in front of her.

Vevina motioned for the girl to speak.

“I apologise for the interruption, Lady, but the porters have been waiting some time and are asking after you.”

Vevina sighed. Time often passed more quickly when she was alone in her thoughts, and she hadn’t intended to spend so long thanking her quarters and saying goodbye. She sent a distaff thread to Hortense, who accepted it without hesitation.

Vevina pulsed regret on the thread as she gathered her last few belongings and arranged her bag.

All Moe and Chiara references look good to me!
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead, We'll wander back to home and bed.
