Appearance

Play By: Sean O'Pry
Distinguishing Features: He's handsome and reserved, not often electing to engage strangers in small talk. His intensity can be disconcerting, especially when focused. He comes alive when faced with new experiences, but through the years, this happens less and less.

Personality

Personality: Quiet, observant and thoughtful, Tore is science minded, led by logic and analysis. He doesn't often lose his composure having mastered many of his hardier emotions. He favors practicality over passion, order over creativity. The only inventiveness he showcases is in his strategies and even then, he recognizes those as equations of chance and probability. He can be lured to recreation, but it's difficult to keep him from his work or some other pursuit for long. He's afraid to lose what he's gained after all the years. He's far from emotionless, he's driven.

Fervently seeking betterment, he can be turbulent when kept from his goals. His ambition is perhaps his best-known quality. He enjoys exploration and new experiences. On his ship, he is methodical and strict, holding himself to the same standards as his men. He is skillful and daring at sea, calculating risks with uncommon precision.

A dutiful son and brother, he cares for his family, but his interactions with them can sometimes be seen as indifferent or unfeeling. Laetitia, his housekeeper, often scolds him for not spending more time with them, but Tore argues quality over quantity, and truly, none of them feel slighted. He is well respected by his kin and he's quite protective of them.

Tore knows how to negotiate Hayll's elite, but that doesn't mean he enjoys all of the social events. Matchmakers work feverishly to pair him with a mate, but he rebuffs the offers, finding such services bizarre while acknowledging that he hasn't done much to help himself in the matter. He very much wants children, a line to carry on his renown into the ages, but has so far been unimpressed with the women he's encountered excepting their skills between the sheets. It doesn't help that he can be a bit of a devil when ashore.

Companions see him as independent, successful, and sophisticated despite his distaste for the hollow arrogance of Hayll's finest. He can even be charismatic in the right circles. He employs a younger man as his assistant and midshipman, though the Warlord's services are primarily meant for his protection. He isn't paranoid, he's prepared. In the case that someone ever comes to remove him from his hard-earned role, they will find him ready for the fight.

Likes:
  • Adventure. Barely a mature and established adult by long-lived standards, he's grown bored of life. He chases the threat of danger and takes risks that others might shy away from. Every challenge is a chance to better himself and a chance to feel alive.
  • Reputation. The long-lived often give a lot of respect to their elders, but he has a long way to go before achieving that status. He seeks to further his family name and cement it in history, as any honorable man might. The accolades that he's received as a naval captain are his badges of honor, he's quite proud of them, and ever seeks to add to his achievements. Not a member of the Hundred Families, he began his life with an obvious handicap but has made up for the difference by sheer drive.
  • Cultures. Having traveled much of the Realm available by sea, Tore has experienced strange and beautiful civilizations, enthralled by the unexpected elegance beyond Hayll. Even the short-lived have rich histories. Despite being inhibited by their brief existence, they persevere and find meaning in those few fleeting years. Even the long-lived in other territories have very different lives than Hayllians. Not racist, he judges others based on their contributions, not their territory of birth.

    Dislikes:
  • Politics. Hayll has always been a slave to one particular group or another. No matter who rules or which group secretly commands the government, Hayll has never been what it purports to be. Some have tried to bring him into different spheres of influence due to his ability to inspire loyalty but he's turned them all down, preferring the storms of the seas over the chaotic exchanges of power that take place in the senate.
  • Arrogance. In Hayll's cultural climate there are many who rule certain circles without the actual qualifications to do so. Whether or not they realize that their ill-advised appointments are unmerited, they always seem to act as though they have worked for what they have. It's rarely the case in his estimation. Having worked so hard to increase his own standing, he resents the attitude of any who've simply bought or been given theirs.
  • Excessive Leisure. Too much time spent between tasks makes him nervous. He always feels as though he's fighting time. He absolutely enjoys and requires downtime, but rarely allows himself to get comfortable for long.

    Fears:
  • Solitude. Remaining outside of the popular social circles and spending much of him time dedicated to work, Tore has had little time to establish the family that he needs to cement his prestige. He's not interested in the venomous women that inhabit Hayll's mafia, yet marrying a woman outside of an honored family could stunt the growth of his widening influence.
  • War. Not battle, but war. An excellent tactician and fighter, Tore isn't afraid of the fray, but rather what conflict could do to Hayll. He doesn't believe that his homeland deserves or has earned the status it holds and fears that it could be easily taken away. The territory military is more than sufficient to hold the borders but only if led by a strategic mind and not fools concerned only with the back alley deals they've brokered for their own personal advancement.
  • Stagnation. He is bookish, always absorbing new information and training in new skills. Concerned that his lack of established relationships and ignoble birth consistently chip away at his reputation, he worries that he can never simply rest on his laurels else they will be taken out from under him. Unless he is always seeking to increase his worth to his people, he will lose ground. Having shunned the kind of people that don't take kindly to such treatment, he is well aware that they could take away everything that he's worked for unless he continues to be indispensable to Hayll.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Efficiency. The Craft comes naturally to him anymore, evenly applied to every thought process to the point that it requires little thought on his part. Tore doesn't even know how to relax without strategizing the most efficient use of his time. He considers his every move with the mind of a tactician, consistently assessing and reassessing his plans. He manages his ship with the utmost attention to detail, prepared to shift to any number of alternate strategies at a moment's notice. He lives, works, and fights as though he's already plotted each course with diligent detail, mostly because he has. He could be a master of the senate if he applied his calculating mind there, but he's well aware that he's not welcome among their sort except to be a pawn.
  • Composition Sensing. Tore senses structures with the same acumen that others can sense psychic signatures in any given space. More geared toward broad and large spaces, with a pulse of this Craft he is able to ascertain the layout and contents of ships or buildings. Most often he applies the skill to determine an enemy at sea, their manpower, guns, and type of cargo. While distance is a factor, applying his strategic insight does help him accurately infer what he can't yet sense. He can map most any building, the layout of the furniture, locate hidden stores, and calculate the number of any unmasked bodies inside, Blood or Landen. While he would be able to tell whether or not a pouch contains jewels or coins, he wouldn't be able to count either, only to recognize the strength of the unique signatures that each type of item returns to him.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Calming Rage. Surrounded by other competent sailors and subordinates, Tore has rarely had need of such Craft. He holds his crew to the same standards that he holds himself to and has advanced to a station where he can handpick his shipmates and retainers. Anyone who cannot abide and wait for his signal to act will find themselves requiring a new master. He has no patience for those who cannot restrain themselves or those who need assistance to be their best.
  • Power Bolts. In his early years when he was just a sailor on lesser, more fragile ships, the use of power bolts was strictly forbidden along with other destructive types of Craft. Even the smallest crack of power could compromise the integrity of a ship. The ship he currently manages is a robust rated ship of the line, wrapped in webs and other protections, but the rule still stands that the only allowed use of such potentially damaging Craft is when it is employed during battle. As such, his own use of power bolts is at least a jewel rank weaker than what it should be and poorly directed.

    Life Story

Assistant: Primus Ovidia - Warlord - Summer Sky - Purple Dusk (b. 0 AP)

    History:

As a young boy, Tore was fascinated by the sea. Living on the coast and with his father in the Hayllian Navy, he spent most of his childhood in and around the ocean. He was mesmerized by the different types of ships that he saw from his window and their multicolored flags. The ships bore all manner of men, those of golden skin like him, but some were pale or dark as well. Tore lessened the monotony of being the only young child in the house by dreaming up stories for these men and these ships, imagining the adventures they had been on and those yet waiting for such brave souls.

When he was barely old enough, he sought work at a local fishery, joining the men on the boats, eagerly learning each skill and task. He was a good worker, always seeking for new ways to do old tricks. His youthful ambition didn't earn him many friends among the crews as he was always suggesting changes to established processes, but no one could accuse him of being unwilling to get his hands dirty either. It was difficult for anyone not to respect his dedication.

Recognizing Tore's proficiency in streamlining systems and processes, his father sent him to work for a senator Prince. Under his new boss, he received training in the intricate ways the Hayllian government operated, touching on diplomacy but highlighting Efficiency, teaching him to weave Craft into his already remarkable grasp of the concept.

Placidus, Tore's Father, worked his way up the naval ranks from the bottom, but he had higher aspirations for his own son. As a respected Captain, he was unwilling to show favoritism to the young prodigy. Placidus would not endorse his son for admission into the Naval Academy, but as expected, the senator was impressed by his charge and did so himself. After completing his schooling, Tore was appointed as a Lieutenant and assigned to a ship.

Tore earned the rank of Captain well before he was given command of a ship. He was passed up for the prestigious role by other, more well-connected sailors. At a certain point, they began apologizing to him on their way to their new post. Everyone knew that he was qualified, but luck simply hadn't been in his favor. He didn't press the issue or make enemies out of potential allies. He just continued in his way, always learning and proving himself indispensable. He would live long enough to have his chance.

His ship was at sea when the Purge struck. The storm churned the waves as it approached, tossing the huge boat despite the many protections woven into the hull. Whether he had been dead or simply knocked unconscious, he doesn't recall. He didn't come around until the following night, adrift on the sea, rescued by a comrade. It took them another day and night to get to shore, and only then did they realize the extent of the carnage that had struck the realm.

Much of the Navy had been splintered to toothpicks in the storm. The chaos that ensued and the reformation of the fleet gave him leave to search out his family. At home he found his father preparing his mother for burial. The elder Ristide had escaped the judgment of the storm nearly the same as his son. Tore's older brother and sister had never received jewels, but like most of Hayll, none of them were ever the same again afterward. They Navy suddenly desperate for leaders, Tore finally received the promotion he deserved.

In the years that followed, Tore finally began to show signs of his success. He was able to afford an estate for himself near his family home for when he wasn't away at sea. He appointed his brother as his steward. His sister tried her hand at marriage (or feigned it) a few times, and came and went between homes depending on her relationship status. Renata, a half-sister from his father's first marriage moved in with their father after losing her husband and her jewels to the Purge. Being so close to his family helped Tore forget the relative emptiness of his own home, but loneliness tugged nevertheless.

With his own vessel to direct, he threw himself into his work, seeking to further honor the family and the reputation of the Captains Ristide. Tore's father was a Commodore when he was finally forced into retirement. He was an older gentleman then, but not unfit for duty. A particular rivalry had changed him. Chasing the pirate Booster Slate had caused him to take too many risks and put his crew in danger well too many times. In the end, Booster was still free and Commodore Ristide was given a proper if unfulfilling and unwanted send-off.

Tore promised his father that he would continue the work that he had begun. He has traveled the realm, seeing lands that he dreamt of as a child. His reputation as a competent leader and military genius is unimpeachable. Once he was given a chance to shine, he stunned even his detractors to silence. Some resent his ability to command while being of common birth, but it would be hard to unseat him now and he's not even achieved all that his father did before him. At this point in his career, it would take the death or retirement of a superior officer for him to advance further, but as always, he is patient.

    Character in Play:

Removing his leather gloves before reaching the terrace, Tore took the stairs to his door two at a time. Primus chuckled softly, following at his back and glancing up to the tall three story home. Fitting as much space as the Captain's required into the line of coastal properties required a little vertical finesse. Tore would never admit to being excited, but it was clear he was thrilled to be home again after such a long absence. There was much to do.

Remigius, his brother, had informed him that all was well at home after the Coliseum had fallen, but Tore had rushed nonetheless to return to his family. With slaves on the loose, things were bound to be chaotic for some time. Plus there was the matter of Therava to consider, the pirate daughter of Booster Slate. Tore had put her into a collar and sent her off to fight instead of dealing with such traitorous Blood. She'd sworn her innocence, and truth be told, her story was well conceived, but she couldn't fool him so easily. He'd been chasing that damn ship for too long to let it go. Her father was still at large which only made the situation worse. He hadn't even come to settle the family debt much less attempt to rescue his daughter. If Therava was only half as bad as her father, she was still half-vermin.

Thrusting the door open, Tore nearly crashed into Laetitia who had been rushing toward the door to meet them. Stopping dead in her tracks, her eyes sparkled and she grinned. "Captain," she gasped, more breathy due to her sudden halt than anything else.

Tore spared her a slight yet honest smile and continued on into the hall. He tossed his gloves to a bench and began shaking out of his jacket. When he came to the end of the hall, Laetitia and Primus were in tow as he looked both ways for any sign of his brother.

"He's coming," Laetitia offered without committing to any real volume in her voice. Tore would look until he found him anyway. Stepping forward, she tugged the coat from his arm as he advanced further into the home.

The Hearth Witch greeted Primus finally, keeping pace with the Captain, but no longer trying to interact with him. He would settle in enough time. The two conversed quietly, happy to see each other again. Though they'd been lovers from time to time, they behaved more like adopted siblings and seemed to revere each other as such. Tore didn't seem to notice the tittering at his back as he turned yet another corner and then stared up the staircase.

"Well? Where is he?" Tore shot a stare back to Laetitia who instinctively reached for Primus' forearm when met with such intensity.

"Lord Ristide," she retorted, inclining her head toward a den. "Come and sit. I'll get you something to drink. He knows you're here."

Tore growled quietly and spun away from the banister, obedient, but assuring them of his dissatisfaction. They didn't pay him any mind either way.

"I'll fix the drink if you bring something to eat," Primus bid with a wink, clearly winning favor from the witch.

She shook her head nevertheless. "I have dinner prepared. We'll eat as soon as you'd like." Laetitia purposefully looked to Tore as she finished, though didn't expect much in the way of a response.

Primus shrugged and lowered himself onto the arm of stuffed chair. Tore had settled onto a couch across from him, but when he lifted his eyes and saw Primus abusing his furniture, it only took a subtle twitch to communicate his warning and the Warlord quickly moved onto the cushion proper.

Ruminating, Tore wasn't going to be much for conversation. For the moment, Primus and Laetitia had fallen silent, though still exchanging coy glances. Tore had half a mind to intrude upon their privy conversation that he wasn't supposed to know they were having. When he looked up, however, she was drifting over with his drink swirling about a sphere of ice in a lowball glass. He wouldn't dare bother a woman who gave him what he needed... not unless his brother didn't appear in the next sixty seconds.

As if aware of the countdown, steps sounded in the hall and the Captain forgot his glass atop a side table and stood. Laetitia and Primus pretended to seem disinterested. Remigius strode into the den, his smile spreading into a wide grin when he saw his brother. "Brother, good to--"

    "Have you found her?"

"--see you." Remi's smile faded and he shook his head, glancing to the other two while straightening. "No, not since I wrote the letter this morning that met you when you disembarked... Still no."

No one in the room thought anything was amiss when Tore stepped forward to embrace his brother with one of the deepest scowls he'd ever worn.

    "Dinner?" Laetitia offered meekly.
