Personality

Personality:
Tibor is generally a calm, patient man, sometimes stubbornly so. He smiles easily and has a dry sense of humor. He has a kind, grandfatherly air about him, especially when his granddaughter, Naomi is around. He is very protective of her, sometimes to the point of hovering as he learns for the first time how to be a parent who is present in a child's life.

Having calmness and patience do not prevent him from ever getting angry, though. He does, but his anger is slow, smoldering fire rather than a flashpoint, and he has become good at employing the 'I'm not angry; I'm disappointed' attitude. Different situations bring out different expressions of anger. He will yell if needed, but it is less common than standing in silence while someone stumbles over explaining him- or herself. The one person most capable of getting under his skin is his son, Ivor. Anger comes more quickly when Ivor pokes because he knows exactly what to say and do.

Sometimes, when Tibor thinks that he is alone, there is a sense of sadness around him. It's something he tries to keep contained, but the deaths of his parents and his daughter, Eileen, weigh on him even though his parents lived long lives and died of old age. He misses them some days more than others. Eileen's death is much heavier because he feels like he failed her as a father by being gone for much of her life, and it is impossible for him to make up for that now.

Likes:
  • Giving Advice: Tibor likes to offer advice to people, though he tends not to do so unless he's asked his opinion. He received a lot of unsolicited advice when he was young, most of which he disregarded. So, he won't usually waste his time on that now, but he does very much enjoy when the younger generation seeks him out to get his opinion.
  • Listening: When it's clear that someone doesn't want his advice, Tibor is happy to simply be a sounding board. He appreciated people who just let him talk at them, and so he is happy to fill this role for others who need it. Tibor also likes hearing about things people are proud of, or his granddaughter's latest imaginary adventure.
  • Strategy: Tibor likes strategy games because he feels they keep his mind sharp, but he also likes strategy in the form of battle plans. While he has never been in a large battle on land, he has had to think his way out of situations while sailing. He likes sometimes being able to best someone Darker than himself, especially when it's unexpected.
Dislikes:
  • Rain: The weather changing to rain didn't used to bother Tibor when he was a younger man. Now he feels like it affects him much more than it ever used to. It makes his joints ache to the point that he has sought out Healers in the past to help ease his movements. This makes him sad because he used to enjoy the sound of rain on the roof, but that enjoyment has been lessened.
  • Playing Pretend: As much as Tibor tries to connect playing pretend with Naomi to coming up with plans and strategies for things that haven't happened yet, it's just not the same. Tibor did not play much with his own children, so he feels awkward and clunky when she asks him to play.
  • Being told he can't do something because of his age: He's not that old! He's also not ill or injured or an invalid. He can walk just fine, thank you, and yes he can ride that horse, swing that sword, and quite possibly beat you at chess.
Fears:
  • That Naomi's father will try to cause trouble: Tibor does not know who his granddaughter's father is, nor does the male have any rights to her if he did show up. Nevertheless, Tibor worries that he might try anyway since Naomi's mother died before the Birthright Ceremony. Mostly, he is concerned about the effect it would have on Naomi, who he wants to have a good life without more hardship.
  • Death: Tibor's daughter's death from illness has caused him to think more about his own mortality. The deaths of his parents were tough, but they were old and it was almost expected, though still sad. Eileen's death was different and reminded him in a real way that age was not the only factor. The more he thinks about it, the more it has begun to scare him.
  • Regret: Tibor has made the decision to give up sailing for life on land, and he worries that he will regret his decision to remain in one place to raise his granddaughter. It's not the sailing that he thinks he will miss, but the traveling, and he doesn't want Naomi to think that he wishes he was somewhere else.
Craft Strengths:
  • Security Spells: Since Tibor is relatively Light, having any sort of advantage often means that he need to know when someone is approaching who shouldn't be. His skill here is most specifically in spells that alert him of an intruder, rather than ones meant to keep others out.
  • Jewel Management: Tibor has learned to make every little bit of the power he has useful because he has a comparatively small amount to work with. He is constantly aware of how much Craft he is using and works hard to conserve it.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Whimsy Craft: Tibor's poor ability to perform Whimsy Craft is a recent discovery as Tibor attempted to use it to entertain his granddaughter. The illusion he tried to create ended up looking like a tiny explosion, which Naomi found hilarious, but it was still not what he wanted. Despite practice, he has not gotten any better at it, but Naomi is still no less entertained, so he us unwilling to declare himself a failure at it.
  • Travel Craft: Tibor feels like he finds it more difficult than many to ride the winds, and it means he usually ends up paying for a coach. It gets expensive to travel this way, but it's usually better than struggling along on his own.

History:

Tibor's mother was a Scelt native, but his father was not. Tibor and his siblings were given his father's surname, which caused them trouble sometimes with people thinking they were foreigners. As a child, Tibor's desire was always to adventure. He watched the ships come into and leave the port and dreamed of going with them, though it wasn't the sea itself that called him but the romanticized idea of adventure. His mother was not so eager to have her son leave, especially when the Jewel he obtained at his Birthright was the Yellow. She was afraid that having such a light Jewel would mean he had trouble. Even so, he snuck out of the house to hang out at the wharf whenever he could, learning whatever the merchants and other men there would teach him. As it turned out, he learned most of what they taught him quickly, including sword fighting and using his Jewel to create shields and, as he got older, deliver punches with Craft.

Eventually, his family needed money desperately enough that his mother relented and allowed him to go sailing. Tibor sailed with the men earning money to bring back to his family. When they were on land, he did some court training when his family could afford it, but it was broken up and somewhat ineffective. At the usual age of twenty, he returned to make his offering, where he descended to the Tiger-Eye. This disappointed him, but he had no choice except to make the best of it.

Throughout his life, Tibor split his time between land and sea, always leaving courts when his contract was up instead of renewing it because he had no ambition to move up to anything higher than a District court. He also fathered two children, a daughter named Eileen with a women he met at a port, and a son named Ivor, with a woman met at a court. Despite his absence from both of them, he was granted paternity, which he guessed was more to do with the fact that the women were poor and he was earning some money than anything else. So, he did his best to support them as well.

During his travels, when his children were teenagers, Tibor’s ship was taken over and he survived the fight only barely. He then spent several years as a prisoner forced to work since he knew how. Fighting his way out was not an option despite his fighting skills, but an escape plan was. He and the other survivors from his ship hatched a plan and when they were at a port and the moment was right, they escaped.

From there, they split up and Tibor was left without work. His original ship captain and most of its crew were dead, and so he returned home, found where his daughter and son each currently lived with their mothers, and began life again in a district court that would allow him to see both of them. He stayed for a long time, doing his best to be happy remaining in one place because everyone needed him to contribute money along with their own earnings and he even rose to Master of the Guard in the court. His children grew up, and Tibor again found himself feeling restless.

When the contract was up, he decided to leave again. He got a job on another ship and set sail. He saw his family whenever he could and several years later, Elieen gave birth to a little girl named Naomi, whose Healer caste became apparent before her Birthright. Before she could have this ceremony, though, Eileen grew ill and quickly succumbed to it. Tibor’s son was not in a position to raise her, and so against his own better judgement, Tibor volunteered. Having never really raised a child, it was a learning experience, especially for a man who was beginning to feel his age. Having Naomi with him changed Tibor’s outlook and he knew that he could not return to sailing. Raising Naomi would be his new adventure.

For a few months, he lived off of his savings while trying to adjust to his new life. He worked odd jobs just to earn money, but they didn’t provide the sort of stability he wanted for Naomi, and so he decided that he would find another job at a court. He wanted it to be a ‘retirement court’ of sorts, one where he could work in a more distant circle that would provide him both income and time to spend with Naomi.

While he was looking, he also saw that Naomi went through her Birthright Ceremony after counseling with a Priestess who thought that she would be fine, despite her mother’s relatively recent death. Naomi was thrilled with the Yellow she received because it matched Tibor’s, and with the ceremony complete, it was time for Tibor to start hunting for a job in earnest.

Character in Play:

Until now, the only Birthright Ceremony Tibor had ever been part of was his own. He had missed his own childrens’, though he had been given paternity of them anyway. It was something he regretted, along with all the time he had missed in their lives. He was away supporting them, but it didn’t seem to matter. Their father wasn’t around. No number of apologies would make up for it, especially now that his daughter, Eileen, was dead.

Sometimes, Tibor felt like he wasn’t allowed to mourn her. It was hard not to think of Eileen as Tibor watched the Priestess take his granddaughter, Naomi, away to the altar for her Birthright. Eileen should have been here. If only they had gotten her to a Healer more quickly, maybe she could have been.

Eileen had already said she was not giving anyone Paternity during the ceremony, and no one showed up hoping for it to be granted. Tibor was secretly glad for that. He didn’t want to deal with that when this should only be a happy day for Naomi.

Tibor tried not to let his mind wander too much on what should have been as he waited for Naomi to return. He wondered what Jewel she would receive, what sort of life it would let her have, and he hoped that she would be happy with it.

“Papa! Papa! Look!”

Tibor looked up to see his granddaughter running towards him, holding her Jewel out in front of her, clasped in both of her hands, and he wasn’t able to immediately see it even though she wanted him too. The Priestess trailed behind her with a soft, amused smile on her face. Naomi was practically bouncing as she reached him, and her wild curls fell into her face.

“Let’s see it,” Tibor said, kneeling down in front of her so that his eyes were level with hers. He reached up and pushed Naomi’s hair out of her face. Someday he thought he might figure out how to tame it a little bit. The Priestess stopped several paces away so that they could have their family moment.

“Look! It’s just like yours!” Naomi said in delight that struck Tibor with how earnest she was. She moved her hands to reveal a bright Yellow Jewel, cradled on her palms. Affection swelled in Tibor’s chest, and he smiled at her and kissed her temple. He didn’t have memories like this with his daughter, and he regretted it, especially now that she was dead and he was not able to make new memories with her. Naomi couldn’t replace what he had missed out on, but he was not going to make the same mistake again.

“Yes it is,” Tibor said, calling in his own Yellow Jewel. He collected the chain it was on so that it didn’t get tangled and then held it up next to Naomi’s.

“Can I have it on a necklace, too?” Naomi asked, taking his hand while closing her fingers around her Jewel as he stood up. Kneeling for too long made him ache. “Please? Please? Pleeease?” She tugged on his hand, looking up at him.

“Of course,” Tibor agreed with a smile as he lead her away.

I'm high maintenance today. xD Could I have this reduced to Y-TE please? (I've already got Y-R) and the +10 added to his descent? I think this is possible even though it's already uncut?
