Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:

Tezca’s first word was ‘why?’, and it’s continued to be a theme in his life ever since. He’s got the curiosity of a cat and the need to seek answers that might not occur to the average person. If he was told to gather plants for healing or cooking as a boy, he had to know why *these* ones and not *those*. And if he didn’t get a good enough answer, he would go out and investigate on his own until he was satisfied. It’s a trait that’s carried through to his life in the Blinded Vigil: Tezca will spent long hours at a stretch trying to get a complete view of a particular path and have to be gently forced to break from it long enough to take care of himself by the Vigil’s Warlord Princes. He funnels much of a Widow’s surly aggression into ferociously attacking his visions until they give him the answers he seeks.

Tezca is good with his hands and can’t resist figuring out how to solve any problem that requires a little tinkering. It might take a few tries, but with the right materials he can design and build all manner of useful little devices and webs to help with life’s tasks. It was what he did with the Huemac and why he adapted so well to life as a male Widow: he has physical and mental dexterity in spades. He has a history of being the one who goes ‘I bet it would go faster if we did this’, or ‘here’s how we can do it and not get caught’ that have also served him well in his adult life.

That gentle, innocent curiosity and experimental spirit are gone now: that one conversation on the Festival of the Dead left Tezca a lot grimmer and intensely focused. Every action in his life since then has been dedicated to averting the fate he was warned of for Shalador. Tezca has a lot of heart and no one has ever doubted his courage. Between that and his raging curiosity, he has always had the capacity to be a bit obsessive about his passions: whether it be out-Territory trinkets, his family or the saving of Shalador. He will do what he must to maintain order and has the patience of a Prince used to watching for weaknesses to exploit.

He used to love people: talking to them, trading stories, enjoying their company. That trait has carried over to his new life and is the foundation of his decision to join the Blinded Vigil; it’s simply that ‘his people’ is a larger group than it used to be. He is absolutely dedicated to his people and therein lies a startling capacity for ruthlessness. Sometimes it’s necessary to break a few eggs to make an omelet. Tezca will mourn for the hawks they could have been, but is practical enough to take what action he has to in order to save the nest and hope Mother Night has mercy on his soul later.

Likes:
  • Cats- Being a part of the Blinded Vigil is certainly an honor, but it can be a lonely one. Tezca likes to keep a cat or two as a companion to talk to- something that can fend for itself, but has soft fur to pet when the stress of saving Shalador gets to be too much.
  • Experimenting with his Craft- He just plain likes to tinker with stuff to keep his hands and mind busy and make it ‘better’. This is just as true now that the subject of his fascination is Widow’s webs as it was as an adapter of out-Territory devices for the Huemac.
  • Working with his hands- Tezca is a very tactile person who has always investigated the world through touch above all other senses, even before his blinding. Whether it’s a tool, Craft work, or a lover’s body, he prefers having something to occupy his hands.
Dislikes:
  • Being under the thumbs of the Elders- It grates on Tezca that Black Widows alone are subject to the oversight of the Elders. Every caste of Blood is dangerous in its own way, so why is it only they subject to outside supervision? He resents being hobbled in this fashion.
  • Being the dumping ground for unruly Warlord Princes- While it is useful in some respects, the Blinded Vigil have more important things to do for Shalador than babysit a bunch of damaged males. Any other Black Widow could do the same thing. It isn’t fair that “out of sight, out of mind” seems to be applied to both they and the Vigil.
  • Insomnia- Because he is blind and his body no longer receives the same signals to stimulate its circadian rhythms, Tezca is occasionally subject to periods of sleeplessness. He then requires a Healer’s aid to reset his internal clock and help him sleep again.
Fears:
  • Seeing his family again- It hasn’t been a risk until now, but with Tezca’s webs showing that it’s time for the Vigil to rejoin the world he is truly afraid that he will run into the family he left behind and have to face their recriminations for his abandonment of them. Or, worse, that this time he won’t be strong enough to leave them again. His loyalties need to be to the Territory alone, particularly as civil war threatens it.
  • The fall of Shalador- His grandmother’s warning only promised failure if he did not join the Vigil, not guarantee success if he did. He has seen the ash covered woman, he has seen the rock in the water, but fears he won’t be able to interpret what the visions mean in time. Or that he won’t be able to hold the Territory together at all (hence the importance of forming the Guardians to step up).
  • Losing more of his senses- His sight was a necessary sacrifice, but Tezca worries sometimes about being deafened, maimed or Broken as well. Any of which serves no greater purpose as did his blinding and which might impede his ability to save Shalador.
Craft Strengths:
  • Vision Webs- Those of the Blinded Vigil exist as Mindhealers and Visionaries and this is the Craft that Tezca sacrificed his sight and family to master. He can tread the Tangled Kingdom without fear, in confidence that he can find his way back to the shores of sanity without aid. He has greater success at both interpreting his visions and finding answers to specific questions in his webs.
  • Delivery Webs- Tezca is skilled at a particular kind of web that makes the subject both more docile in temperament and more likely to be obedient to his commands. He does not often bother to disguise his work, preferring to let his usual subjects (the Vigil’s damaged Warlord Princes) assume it is a mindhealing web to help their mental balance, and can put more effort toward strength and duration of the spell. If he had to be more delicate, both of those areas would suffer accordingly.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Craft Sight- Brothers of the Blinded Vigil learn this Craft to compensate in some small way for the loss of their physical sight and can at least navigate a room without aid. Tezca is only capable of it in strobe-like flashes, as an echolocating bat would, and that at great drain to his Jewels. He prefers to do without it unless absolutely necessary, favoring to memorize a location if he can, to use a cane to check for obstacles (obsidian, with a silver serpent-headed handle), or to rely on the escort of one of the Vigil’s Warlord Princes.
  • Mindhealing- One of the duties of the Blinded Vigil is tending to the minds of their Warlord Prince guardians: those too damaged or unsuitable to serve the females they should. But Tezca never adapted to this area of Craft like some of his brothers. He finds it more effective and reliable to use a combination of his male caste’s ability to calm, and his Widow’s webs to force docility and obedience. Those males have already been judged too unstable to function as normal people- who cares if their chalices are actually fixed when patched-over is just as useful?

History:
Tlaloc of the Great Tribe Huemac was once one of the least likely candidates for joining the Blinded Vigil that one could find in all of Shalador. The little boy was a bright, curious youngster with a quicksilver mind and an endless stream of chatter. As the boy grew up, he often accompanied his father out of the Territory to do one of the things the Huemac did best: bring back outside advancements to adapt for use among the children of Shal.

Tlaloc remained absorbed in his work as a young man, oblivious to problems such as the dwindling of Queens born to a Tribe once famous for them. He waxed enthusiastic about his puzzles and their potential to the one young woman of his acquaintance who seemed interested in them until the day the Healer literally knocked him upside the head and dragged him home with her. He got the point quickly enough, however.

Tlaloc couldn’t have been more content with life as a married man. He doted on his wife (after all, women could be said to be ultimate puzzle, yes?) and proudly exclaimed over each child’s birth. He was there for their first steps, their first time at weapons training, and the first time he had to glare at a male kissing his daughter (the fact that they were eight and innocently curious about what the adults saw in it didn’t matter- protective fathers had to get their practice in too).

But one Festival of the Dead, everything changed. His paternal grandmother came to see him with a dire warning: join the Blinded Vigil or all would surely be lost. Whatever argument she made must have been persuasive, because he renounced his Tribe and family the next day- including the wife now pregnant again with a child he would never see.

The bright, sociable man traveled to the sacred place where the Vigil sequestered itself and began learning its dangerous arts with a grim intensity. It was more of a struggle than he'd honestly been prepared for: he had the right turn of mind to adapt to the Widows' Craft, but determination could only do so much to make up for the learning of a caste and instincts so foreign to his own. But he persevered. It might take years, decades, but he had to get this right. The day his snake tooth grew in, he was blinded in accordance with tradition and took a new name for himself. Tlaloc of the Huemac was dead; Tezcacoatl of the Blinded Vigil had been born.

Tezca seemed to relax slightly after he had been sealed to the Vigil. He had a quick, facile mind that adapted well to the new work being asked of it and he found Widow’s spells as fascinating as any of his past puzzles. He spent long hours every day refining his skills and experimenting with the new Craft. Always, restlessness would return to spur his efforts if he left it too long. The Council of Elders expressed concern over his stability, especially after he rose to become the Vigil’s Leader, but Tezca’s sworn loyalty to Shalador and  agreement to submit to mind delving by the Leader of the Felidae served to reassure them of his sanity.

Tezca dreamed increasingly of ash and fire as the years passed. To his despair, the future that his grandmother had warned him about was still viable and he had no idea how to stop it. Pieces, yes, but nothing he could take to the Elders and demand action upon. His decision to serve Shalador as one of the Vigil seemed to be destined to be for naught.

One day, however, the Eldest Sister erupted and his webs changed. The vision they presented and the path he must follow became clear, but shook him to the core. But everything had a Price and surely the survival of a Territory deserved no less than what the Darkness had asked of him. After long hours spent in vigil and prayer, Tezcacoatl screwed his courage to the sticking point and followed where his visions led. It was he who led the Vigil’s Warlord Princes in ambush of the desperate and brave Elders who defied his warning for the sake of their people. All but the one who heeded his warning to stay away. That one still had a place in what was to come, as the only one of the old guard willing to work with Shalador’s Widows to save the Territory instead of maintaining control over them. The time of the Guardians was now at hand.

Character in Play:

Tezcacoatl sat comfortably before the blazing fire in a cross-legged meditation pose as his sightless eyes stared fruitlessly into the flames. Inwardly, however, the Leader of the Blinded Vigil was not so restful as his physical bearing might indicate. His hands rested on the frame of the web before him, fingers not yet touching the silken strands. He didn’t need to. Tezca had spun the first form of this web a moon ago and would not forget the images it provoked against his mind’s eye. But it was a familiar, comfortable gesture to attempt to bring some peace to his heart while his mind traced the paths of dreams and visions with all the devastating alacrity of a lightning strike, its branches forking down to test which of the forest’s giants would be its prey this time.

The vision within the web had initially disturbed him as much as the rousing of the Elder Sister Herself. In its first scene, seven lean, gray jaguars met and departed in peace- only to meet again in battle at the heads of whole Clans of angry jaguars. Only the vultures survived that killing field and the other Sisters vented their fury at the waste in devastating explosions of ash and fire that ate up the rest of the beautiful Territory. But in the second scene, spiders descended upon the (six, only six this time!) cats as they met. The old animals mewled and fought, but eventually fell to twitching and death. The missing jaguar flowed out of the forest to join with three black leopards, each beast standing guard at a cardinal direction of Shalador. The Sisters slumbered on in this path and the Territory stood true.

Tezca had known what the contrasting visions meant straight away, though he had dutifully requested blood from the Elders (to read the portents for their meeting, he assured them) and woven it again in hopes that he had read the first web incorrectly. Instead the message of the second had merely emphasized that of the first. His path was clear.

His heart did not sit easy with the decision, however. No matter how much he might chafe at the unwanted but tradition supervision of the Elders, the action he contemplated was pure betrayal and Tezca liked to think himself an honorable man. Still, he’d done what he could- if they chose to ignore his warning of danger (as he now ignored the knowledge that six of them would), on their own heads be it.

Tezca resolutely climbed to his feet, suddenly impatient with the delay: if this must be done, let it be done quickly. “Summon the men.” He directed Tenoch, knowing the Red Prince would know which ones he’d tapped for this duty. Death was coming, Elders of Shalador, and he had set it free.

Petitions (if any):

Caste Requesting : Black Widow (trained) Warlord
Reasons For Requesting these Castes: Tezca must have the Black Widow caste to fulfill the roles of Leader of the Blinded Vigil and a Guardian of Shalador. He’ll have trained into the caste as an adult; a conscious choice that required great sacrifice in many areas in order to gain the insight he needs to save Shalador. The Widow’s power (specifically a Widow’s visions) is to be used in the service of his Territory, not just to have a nifty new power.

I want him to have the Warlord caste because at heart he’s just an ordinary male who’s been asked to play an extraordinary role by fate. He will use a Warlord’s basic calm and steadiness to temper both a Widow’s moods and those of the Warlord Princes assigned to the Blinded Vigil. I believe if he were a Warlord Prince it would bring too much aggression to what I see as a more analytical role. If he were a Prince, he would go too far into that analytical side and begin to see the people as mere pawns to move on his chessboard. I want him to have that struggle of morality and ethics as he balances his love of his people with his need to take drastic and sometimes despicable action to preserve their lives.

Plans for this Character:

Tezca will clear the path for change in Shalador by ambushing those Elders who did not heed his warning. With their removal, the way will be clear for the Black Widows to step up and assume control of Shalador as its Guardians. As the Sisters continue to pose a threat and tensions threaten to send the Territory into complete chaos, Tezca will provide the visions that the Guardians will use to keep order and try to find a solution to the eruptions before it’s too late.

He will also be responsible for leading the reintegration of the Blinded Vigil. Not all of Shalador will be happy that these dangerous males are living among them again- and not all of the Vigil will want to leave their seclusion. He must also devise a way to keep control of the exiled Warlord Princes as they move back into society.
