Distinguishing Features: Sparrow is a girl with a wicked sense of humor, and moves like someone who knows how to stop someone in their tracks... because she does.  She always binds her hair in a braid when working, though prefers to leave it down when she is relaxing, or not busy.  Sparrow has an almost irreverent sort of air about her when dealing with just about anyone, even those of rank, though she always TRIES to follow protocol.  If she seems subdued, something is probably troubling her.

Personality

Personality:
Some people, by the very virtue of their personality, seem so much larger than they actually are.  This is how Sparrow seems to be.  When she laughs, smiles, growls, or simply speaks... people assume she would be so much larger than she actually is.  The wiry archer is short.  Barely breaking five feet, though she'll very clearly make out that she has an extra two inches... thank you very much.
She has a zest for life, an irreverent humor, and a sometimes extremely vulgar repertoire of jokes.  Despite this seemingly care-free personality, she takes her duties very seriously.  While making jokes regarding the size of one's hands, she will in fact be making certain that every bone is in place, every wound cared for.  Those who get to know her begin to realize that her humor is her shield against the pain and has little bearing on her skills or drive to be the best Healer she can be.  They may not have a cure for the Waste yet... but if there is anything she can do to assist in defeating it, she will do it with no qualms or hesitation.
Regardless of what some may believe, she IS capable of following protocol and trying not to step on important toes.  Of course, just whose toes are important may vary from day to day... but that isn't the important part. The important part is making sure that everything runs as it should, that the body she works on functions and functions well... and that the forest she loves thrives even in the darkness that is the Brood and Waste.

Likes:
  • 1.  Good Food.  Everyone likes to eat.  Well, everyone worth dealing with, at any rate... but Sparrow truly LOVES to eat quality grub.  She has no skills in the kitchen, much to her chagrin... so once she finds a good cook, she'll do what she can to ingratiate herself in an effort to make sure that she doesn't have to live off her own cooking.  It's something she could survive on... but she really, REALLY doesn't want to.
  • 2.  Pre-Dawn.  This time of day is the most peaceful, the most anticipatory.  Animals begin to wake, but haven't quite started their routines.  The wind seems to hush, and the entire forest seems to hold its breath for the few moments just before the sun rises.  There is that most brief of moments when the world seems to get just a shade darker... and then that burst of light comes over the top of the trees.  It never ceases to amaze her, the beauty that so many seem to ignore or be unaware of.  Whenever she can manage it, Sparrow will arrange to be up before that brief stretch of time, just to experience it out amongst the trees.
  • 3.  Snakes.  Yes, she knows.  It's a damned odd thing to like... but she does.  There's just something peaceful about serpents.  Or perhaps it's the intelligence, and the patience.  Shortly after she came to live with her aunt and cousin, she discovered a snake in their yard.  She would often move to sit beside it, studying and watching.  It had a calm way of dealing with the world... until it wasn't.  From then on, she decided to mimic the snake.  She would deal with what the world gave her in a calm manner, studying and accepting... until it was time to strike.
Dislikes:
  • 1. Giving Up -  Sparrow is hard headed.  Stubborn.  The thought of giving up is one of the few things that can make her get a bit violent, whether it's her own thoughts or someone she cares about.  Seeing orders for a retreat makes her bare teeth.  Giving up ground during a fight makes her ready to kill.  She has learned to bite her tongue and bare it, but it's always obvious that she'd rather not.
  • 2.  Seeing Children Cry - if a child is upset, Sparrow gets uncomfortable.  When a child is wailing in loss, Sparrow does what she can for them.  Every inch of her soul commiserates with such misery.  Having lost her own family to the Brood, Sparrow has vowed to help drive them back, to wipe them away where they are found.  Every child she sees in such pain haunts her dreams.
  • 3. Alcohol -  It is a shame that so many people think drinking is a fine way to spend time together, because Sparrow sees drinking as an enabler for terrible decisions.  Her people are passionate, and fierce... and alcohol does nothing but make that worse.  She has seen fights erupt over the smallest of insults because alcohol drove passions to greater heights.  She has seen it slow reflexes, and cause injury.  Sparrow avoids drinking, whenever possible.
Fears:
  • 1.  The Brood -  As much as she hates them, she fears them.  They've taken everything.  Mother, Father, Brother.  Her home is gone.  Everything she held dear stolen from her when she was only Twenty.  Ever since, her nightmares often feature the monsters that killed her family.  At least, she hopes her family is dead.  If they lived, they are no longer her family, and she can't imagine that sort of fate for the kind people her family were.
  • 2.  The Waste -  Who doesn't fear the Waste?  What sort of worse end could there be for anyone?  No healer has found a way to fix it.  The Priestesses are not equipped for it.  It cannot be fought with sword, craft, or arrow.  It is an enemy unbreakable... and the only option is to run.  She hates running.
  • 3.  Weakness -  Not in others.  She fears it in herself.  Against the Brood, only the strong survive.  Because of this, she strives to perfect her craft, her will, her fighting.  And always, in the back of her head... she wonders ... what if she isn't good enough?

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Mending Flesh -  Her mother's strength was in tonics.  Sparrow knows her families recipes, and she isn't terrible with tonics.  But her natural talent shines with wounds.  From piecing ruined flesh together to ensuring there are no scars, she's gained a small amount of renown with her units for being able to make it seem as if the wound was never there.
  • 2. Combat Shielding - Most think of shields as something to block incoming strikes and damages... but Sparrow learned to think of them in other ways.  As children, Ash always took to getting up close and personal.  She herself preferred to fight at a distance, and so had to come up with creative ways to take away his advantages.  She learned how to use shields to throw him off balance, trip him up, and use his own momentum to send him flying when he would come after her.  She has maintained that habit now that he is gone.  Every opponent that trips and falls is an ode to her brother and the lessons he taught her.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Emotional Manipulation - Sparrow isn't just weak at this, she's terrible at it.  She wishes that she just couldn't do it at all... sadly, that isn't true.  Usually when she has attempted to use Craft to manipulate the emotions of others, she has tended to drive them into a Rage.  She's never sought counsel as to why... she has the sinking suspicion it is because she herself is so torn and angry on the inside that she can't offer anything else to another through Craft.  For this reason, she leaves the mental healing of patients to others. That being said... it is a most excellent way to get someone to do something stupid... provided she doesn't get caught.
  • 2.  Death Magic - Spar is a healer, and a damned good one.  But she is also a fierce fighter, and a lover of battle.  One would think she'd be able to turn her Craft specifically towards killing.  Alas, she can't seem to manage it.  For this reason, she focuses greatly on her strengths, working with her skills in bow and dagger to make up for where Craft would fail her on a battlefield.

History:
Dea Al Mon has its troubles.  Between the Waste and the Brood, there is plenty to cause tragedy in the forest.  Despite this, Sparrow never gave much thought to the troubles before they arrived.  Even before her tragedies, she had a sarcastic wit and a sense of humor that defied the reality of the world.  She could be found sparring with her brother, or working with her mother in learning the healing arts, for that was her mother's lot in life as well.  They kept themselves busy, and through their works, they were happy.

Sparrow was never found far from her twin, Ash.  They would often sneak away into the woods, having their adventures and coming home bruised, bloodied, and laughing so hard that tears were in their eyes from the various fights and stunts they would pull.  Always, their mother's long-suffering sigh would greet them.  Always, their father's laughter would echo in their ears.

It all ended when Sparrow turned twenty, shortly after her virgin night.  They came at Dawn... a terrible force that wrecked havoc on her home... and her world.  It was only the numerous sparring battles with her brother that let her trip up the Brood that reached for her... it was only reflex and instinct that sent her running for the river, leaping into it and letting it carry her from her village.  She lost track of her family.  She lost track of... everyone.

She was found three days later by Red Cloaks clearing underbrush from the forest, shivering and doing her best to warm herself beneath a tree.  She was like a wild thing, twitching and ready to run when they came upon her.  It didn't take long to decipher her terrified chattering... and when the scouts returned from her village, their news was grim.  Survivors had gone along the roads... but there weren't many.  Sparrow's family was not amongst them.  Her village, as it turned out, was not the only one to fall. The Brood had come to Kassel.

She required drugs to sleep for the first few weeks.  Most of the trip to Nieste is still a fog, even after ten years.  Her first clear memory after learning of her brother's likely death is of her Cousin gripping her hand... and her Aunt bending over her bed with a worried expression on her face.  She hadn't seen them in five years... but she knew them, and finally let her tears fall.

The first year was the hardest.  Trying to pick up her Healing again felt... empty, without her mother.  Trying to pick up her new bow set her into tears.  It was Thrush that pulled her out of it.  Thrush didn't tell her to get over it.  He simply set upon her one day, forcing her to defend herself.  The fight woke her up.  The fight made her remember more than the loss of her family... it made her remember her anger.  It became their routine for the next four years.  Every morning, she would practice her healing.  Every afternoon she would help her aunt around the house... and every evening she and Thrush would battle against each other until they were exhausted.

Thrush was not her brother.  He was not Ash.  But he became more than a distant cousin, too.  He became a brother, a confidante, a friend.  He was the harsh motivator that forced her to pick herself up when she wanted only to weep... and he was the solid shoulder she could lean on when she needed a break.

It was Thrush that readied her for her time in the Red Cloaks.  It was her Aunt that taught her patience, and how to hide her rather volatile temper.  Her Aunt readied her for her Offering, and saw to her soul, as Wren would call it.  Perhaps it worked.  When she emerged from her night of Darkness, she came with her sapphire... and a new desire for battle.

She was not to be a Healer who remained in safety at all times.  She was meant for the fields. She was meant to be in the thick of it, where she could keep her brothers and sisters from falling to their foes.  This sense of purpose motivated her above the rank and file.  She hasn't tried to reach for being an officer, and has instead settled herself into the role of a Sergeant.  Sergeants, it turns out, can be a bit pushy without having to worry too much at times.  And Sergeants can make judgement calls, so long as they have a solid reason.

This attitude has gotten her a bit of a name amongst the units she has served with out in the Forest.  She may be a bit irreverent, and a 'touch' undiplomatic at times... but Sparrow is a tenacious healer, and a downright vicious killer when it comes to the Brood.

Character in Play:

She was relying on her sister's use of Craft to remain hidden, the both of them in the trees as they watched the lone monster lumbering along.  They were safely tucked in the trees, though she wished they weren't.  She wished she was on the ground, ramming her blade through that damned beast's throat herself.

But they were to observe.  This monster had caught on to the scents of the unit.  It was tracking them.  Most likely, it intended to let its masters know where the Red Cloaks were.  More women for them to take.  More bodies, more death.  Her arm went up, pulling an arrow free.

She could almost feel her sister's sudden intake of breath, but did not hear it.  Her hand pulled the bow string taut, eyes narrowed on her target.  The beast's head was lifting, nostrils flaring in the air as it caught... something.

Perhaps it had caught a whiff of aggression.  It didn't matter.  Whatever sense the beast had, it was too late.  Her arrow whistled through the air, sinking into that furred throat.  And then another, and another.  As the beast twisted about, two more landed in its chest.  It fell backwards with a gargling sound, as if attempting to roar... but she'd already leapt from her post in the tree, her long knife in hand so that she could use the momentum of the fall to plunge the blade through the beast's open mouth.  Down into the gullet... Death.  She felt it crawl through her senses as her left hand moved down to push at the thing, using that shove to pull her blade back up and out of its target.

A thrill of elation left her, her eyes closing for a moment as she forced herself to refocus.  The beast was dead.  It had been alone... but it wouldn't have been for long.  She turned her head up, nodding to the figure in the trees until it fell to land beside her.  "We need to go.  The unit needs to move, and send word to the Ebon Guard... where there's one, more always show."  She didn't kick at the corpse, though her every instinct told her to.

Then again, she had instincts screaming that this beast had once been like her.  Maybe it had once been a mother, brother, sister... but that didn't matter.  It no longer was.  It was... something else.  Something twisted, and WRONG.   She took another steadying breath, using a small amount of craft to clean her blade up before putting it away.  She took her time pulling the arrows from the body.  No need to waste quality heads on such a wretched thing.

"It might not have noticed us, Healer."
"And the beast might have turned back into a slim maiden."  She turned, lifting an eyebrow at the woman in front of her.  "Shieldwoman... that thing had caught wind of us.  It was tracking the unit.  Was only a matter of time before more showed up.  This way, we have the opportunity to move... and maybe lead them away from a village or three.  Besides... I like killing the damned things."

She forced herself  to crack a grin.  That was both a lie and the truth.  She loved killing the things... but she feared doing it.  What if someday she recognized something about one of them?  What if, someday, she found her mother?  The thought always made her hands shake... so she set them busy to cleaning her arrows and putting them away.

"I see that you went about impaling things with your sticks again."  She turned, cracking a grin at one of the Black Widows that traveled with them.
"Well... someone has to do it.  You didn't bring any of those lovely men back with us this time."
"Oh ha ha.  Honestly though, I'd think you'd have better taste."
"Are you offering?"

She reached out, catching at her partner's hand to peer over her.  The woman was shaking a little.  To be expected, she supposed.  She smiled, patting her shoulder before sending her on the way.  "Shieldwoman..."
"Yes, I know.  Pack up.  We're moving out."

She chuckled, ducking her head as the Shieldwoman glared at her.  "I know.  Sorry."  Still snickering, she started back for their things, plucking up bags and setting them on her shoulder while she waited for the marching orders.  Her fingers went to drumming against her legs, eyes twitching this way and that out of habit to see if perhaps there was anything worth nabbing while they were here.

She knew there wasn't.  She'd already gathered the quality plants around here for her work.  But she looked anyways.

"We're heading back to Nieste."
"Nieste... why?"  She blinked, looking back to the officer.  She'd been hoping they would remain in the area... maybe pick off more of those bastards while they could.  Not that she'd say it aloud.  That would just invite trouble.
"There has been trouble.  The Black Castle was attacked."

Her fingers went numb.  Her face went slack.  It was a relief that hers wasn't the only one that did so.  For the Brood to make a move on the Castle... her aunt, her cousin...  Her heart began beating quickly, pounding.  She couldn't lose more family.  She just... couldn't.  the thought of Thrush dead on the ground, or worse... no.

"To Nieste then.  We need to let them know about the movements out here anyways."  Sweet Night... how had they gotten to the Castle?  She shuddered just thinking about it.   They're fine.  Aunt Wren, Thresh... they're fine.  They have to be.  They didn't live that close to the castle, and they didn't work there.  They were fine.

Any other outcome was unacceptable.  She took a deep breath, setting off with the others.  All humor had fled.  It was perhaps the only hint that her sisters would get of how truly worried she was.  But by now, some of them knew her better... and they knew her humor for what it was.  They were going home to Nieste... now they just had to see what they were going home to.
