The Basics

Character Name: Sofia Vasile
Nicknames: Sofie
Age and Birth Year:  27, 167 AP
Race:  Short-Lived
Caste:  Queen
Birth Territory: Dena Nehele
Home Territory: Dena Nehele

Birthright Jewel: Cut Purple Dusk
Offering Jewel:  Uncut Green

Role:
Faction: Court of Flowers

Appearance

Play By: Nadezhda Zaytseva
Distinguishing Features: Sofia stands at medium height (5'4") with raven black hair that frames a heart shaped face, and full lips which do not smile easily. What is most distinguishing about her lays not in her curvy physique, but in the intensity of her dark honey colored eyes and her ability to make others feel like she is looking through them. The subtle but ageless scent of roses lingers in her hair.

Personality

Personality:
Since Sofia was a child, she has been stubborn headed, and though it has often manifested in quiet protests, her mind was not easily swayed when it found a course of action. In order to turn her around, she would have had to be presented, not only with reasonable alternatives but  in a manner that appeases the ultimate goal she wanted to achieve.  She was never a child prone to fits and often rejected the notion that anything special was owed to her, and she remains steadfast and humble. This was instilled at an early age by her parents who sought to humble their daughter.  While Sofia has opened her mind more and has found her voice, she has retained just enough of that stubbornness that commands conciliation and while she still rejects entitlement she understands that ruling is not just a matter of her birth right but accepts it as Mother Night's very will.

Pragmatic to a fault she prefers not to push her will on anyone and reasons that through open discourse one can achieve a goal as easily as with force. This could lead her to come off as more than a little naive at times. Having very little social interaction outside of the Long-Lived people of Hayll and her surrounding family, Sofia eventually learned the virtue of humility and how to make her presence quietly known. She does not seek to conquer but to convince, or coax and her ambitions have been described as limited in comparison with her potential. This never seemed to bother her and in fact the more that it was brought to her attention that she should seek to draw people around her, the stronger the urge became.

She recognizes her dueling values and is very quick to self criticize. This is only because she dislikes receiving critique from others.  Holding herself accountable has always been a strength as well as a detriment, as the same reasoning she gives herself to do better, often knocks her self esteem down. Sofia can be selfish, often prioritizing her own immediate desires over responsibility and duty. She knows this about herself and always tries to do better, often after the fact. She is not infallible however much she wishes to be. She strives to grow and learn not only as a Queen, but as a person. Counting her flaws far too numerous to properly lead, she knows this too is only an excuse.

As a friend, she is engaged and respectful of space, but will feel left out if information is omitted, and worse yet if it is done so for the purpose of placating her.  Though she is mostly even tempered, her anger when stoked is quiet and festering, she is not one prone to outbursts but these can be just as dangerous. She enjoys interacting with nature, especially old growth and listening to most forms of music. Sofia finds beauty in the weathered and the bizarre.  She wishes nothing more than to let her roots spread, but awaits a time when she feels it would be right to do so. As of late she has felt the calling to take up the mantle that should have been hers, finding the denial of such for so many years exhausting she seeks to lead a people she's never known.

Likes:
  • 1. Music- Just returning from Hayll she was spoiled by a culture enriched by art.  None has captivated her more than the sound of a beautiful voice crying out in tragic opera or the playful plucking of strings. Music calms her mind and spirit. As such she will collect music crystals whenever she can. Due to this she could be swayed to look leniently upon an artist in order to protect their gifts.

  • 2. Ancient things- There is beauty in age, physical proof of history still existing grounds her. It is a reminder that there was a time before and will be a time after, but some things can withstand.  May it be a book, or better an old structure that has weathered its way into its foundation and made permanent residence should always be preserved. While she does not desire to return to a Long-Lived territory she feels that the Short-Lived should strive to record and safeguard their histories.

  • 3. Flowers (Especially roses)- Sofia especially loves those that grow under her blessings and treats them like gifts from the Darkness. As such she has crafted new hybrid varieties from grafts down to seedings. Some of these varieties resist pest, grow larger, more vibrant or aromatic flowers. The urge to preserve and create manifest in this hobby. Often times she will take a single flower and place it in a vase near her bed. The scents help her sleep and remind her of her purpose.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Manipulation- While it is in a Queen’s playbook to often rely on this technique but it doesn't mean she has to like it.  People who manipulate in underhanded ways are always looking to save their skins by putting heads of others on the chopping block.

  • 2. Entitlement- Though she can say she was born into opportunity she rejects the notion that by simply existing she is entitled to its benefits. Trust like power should be earned not given away and she must never forget that the true purpose of her Caste has always been to serve. Sofia tries to be ever conscious of this fact as she too can fall prey to her comforts from time to time.

  • 3. The idea of a Bond- Sofia dislikes the idea of a Bond, how a single person could become the entire focus of her life. She dislikes how it seems to so deeply affect those who have one. Like they lose themselves! Having never experienced a bond before she cannot imagine an all consuming relationship ending in anything but grief.

    Fears:
  • 1. Being corrupted- Power can change a person and warp them into someone they are not. Just starting to actually enjoy who she is, Sofia fears that the draw pulling her to rule will mold her into someone she no longer recognizes. All her life she's known that she could use her power for selfish reasons and she does on small things, same as most people, but she's worried it'll get out of hand or worse. This makes her second guess her choices more than she should.

  • 2. Being used-When a Territory kills off their Queens they tend to rank the rest by their Jewels. Sofia fears being used as a puppet in someone else's rule may it be through coercion or the warping of her Chalice. It brings her fear to think that one day her words or her actions would not be her own. Due to this she might also be distrustful of ruling Queens above her.

  • 3. Spiders- Her first memory of these eight legged monsters was as a child, a large one crawling up her back while she slept and sinking its fangs into her arm. The pain will never be forgotten, nor will that fear. As such even the sight of a spider will sent Sofia into in a paralyzing panic.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Jewel Management- Queens were not always looked after properly in her homeland. Those that were not kidnapped were often killed. Due to her Birthright her tutor focused on teaching her to managing Jewel reserves. This allows her to use her Craft with less drainage of power as well as offer her a conscious awareness of how much to use. It also allows her to hide the existence of her Green Jewel for longer durations of time.

  • 2.  Queens Gift- With no Court and working in a Vineyard with a Queen to guide her full time,  Sofia was able to hone the Queen’s Gift on the land. This allowed her to Bless the land to provide plentiful harvests, sweet yields and even to diagnose  all sorts of ailments to the soil and expand her reach to larger swaths of land.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1. Aural Shielding- Having mostly been surrounded by her family her whole life Sofia did not have the luxury of a whole lot of privacy, nor did she have much desire to obfuscate what she said when it needed to be said. As such due to a lack of use her Aural shields are flimsy at best.

  • 2. Compulsion Craft- Being surrounded by family and later in life holding such little experience with other Queens she had never really found a reason to tie someone to a task that needed to be done. Usually asking was enough, and as such Sofia held relatively no interest in this Craft. Deals could be negotiated without force to both parties benefit.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Charani Vasile (143 AP) Blood female
Father: Nicolae Favell (144 AP) White - Yellow - Warlord
Brother: Iago Vasile (164 AP) Rose - Purple Dusk- Warlord
Adoptive step sister :Maerina Augustinus- Healer (193 years old Long Lived) Summer Sky - Opal

    History:

Charani Vasile and Nicolae Favell had been in love before they even knew what the word meant.  Having grown up together, their families facilitated the union from an early age.  Charani was a Blood female who loved weaving and dancing and Nicholae a Warlord who believed hard work was the mark of a good life. They enjoyed the simplicity of their union, having no obligations other than to one another but wanted children to share it with. Iago was born one year after Charani’s Offering.  He was a brave, eager child, wildly independent from an early age. Nicholae doted on his Warlord son, hoping to instill the same hard working values. Only Iago was often distracted and dismissive. He rejected most authority except for his father’s.  Much of that they thought had to do with his younger sister, or at least, the special attention placed upon her at such a crucial time in his life.  The moment Sofia was born, the  Vasile’s lives changed.  Though Charani had yearned for a daughter and her prayers had been answered, that blessing too soon became a curse.  Sofia was a beautifully round faced baby, with wide dark eyes and soft rosy lips. She grasped her mother’s finger tightly and would not let fo. She was a Queen, and in Dena Nehele, let alone Bidea, that was as good as a death sentence. No matter if she was stolen away in the night, or slaughtered by dueling guilds, her daughter would be ripped from her breast before she could truly know her.

Unwilling for this tragedy to come to pass, the family decided to flee the homeland they loved, for all its faults lest the Aristos find their daughter and she too become another forgotten stain in Dena Nehele’s history.  They crossed borders into Hayll, where the Long-Lived would pay little attention to a Short-Lived child. It was a place, where she could hide in plain sight if need be. At the age of five she was a refugee.

Settling in Capua the Vasile clan slowly filtered down to Faro over the course of two years. That is where they met Maerina after Sofia’s father suffered a devastating accident while assisting with renovations of a new building. A large stone block tipped off its access practically killing him and crushing his leg. The Healer tended to him and after learning of their daughter and the flight that took them far from their homeland Maerina invited the family to her Lowland Vineyard, and took them to see her mother Lady Lana Titania Augustinus-Agrippina, District Queen of Citra, near the Dhemlan border. The fields were lush and plentiful, the perfect place for a fledgling Queen. Iago took to Hayll quite well and was beginning to thrive.  They lived a humble existence until then, but Sofia was beginning to show urges to tend to the land and directed her father constantly. He doted, spoiling the girl with his attentions when he could. In turn Nicholae took a job as a guard on the vineyard and the family tended to the house while Sofia was placed under Lady Lana’s wing, as a Ward of the Court.

The ailing Queen had a hole in her heart from lost bonds from long ago. These were wounds that would never truly heal.  Being a precocious and perceptive child, Sofia recognized her mentor’s pain at an early age. Though she was easily dismissed within Hayll as a Short-Lived queen would grow old and die before making any significant change in the scope of their lives, she grew humble and observant of their culture.  It did not stop Lady Lana from raising Sofia as her own, though she already had two daughters named Maerina and Caelissine, whom she loved dearly. She even went as far as to facilitate the aid of her daughter,Priestess Caelissine Tatiana Augustinus-Agrippina who would in her preside over all of Sofia’s important Ceremonies.

Lady Lana focused her lessons on what Sofia was most interested in, such as navigating the vines that produced sweet nectar for their wines and tending to the land properly. Starting with a small rose garden which quickly thrived under Sofia’s attention. As Charina still had concerns about her daughter’s safety, she insisted that Sofia apply herself to Lady Lana’s Craft lessons instead of risking attention by seeking position either in Lady Lana’s Court or as a village Queen in Citra.  So Sofia suppressed her urges, fueled by the fears of her mother. Lady Lana taught Sofia how to recognize her Jewel’s limits and better prioritize her Craft.  Maerina was kind, if not a bit distant, their relationship was not one of two sisters but that of tentative friends. Sofia was often confused by the distance that Maerina placed between them and though she was not her age by any stretch, her visits well well received and anxious.

Maerina would also save her life as at the age of 10 she was bitten in the arm by a rather large spider. The venom worked quickly and Sofia’s anguish could be heard throughout the home. The reaction was so violent that her arm swelled. It would be Maerina who would tend to her during that harrowing time. As Sofia’s father had discovered, once Maerina Healed someone, she took an interest. So Sofia found herself regularly visited by the aloof Healer. Maerina never lied, or made light of an injury or illness; the young Queen could always count on the unvarnished truth from the Healer.

Later, Impressed by Sofia’s skills,Maerina offered to let the Sofia run one of her vineyards on her own. Maerina thought this to be an excellent next phase in her tutelage, believing that administrative, accounting and financial skills would help balance her already highly nurturing instincts as well as set up Sofia  to make a living.

Iago on the other hand pulled farther away from his family, seeking out his own place in the world. They speculated that he joined the rebellion early on in the last year, though none of that could be verified. Though his sister had been in his life as long as he remembered and their ages were not so far apart, he was protective but to a controlling degree. Eventually Iago left the home to find himself, though he had grown resentful of his life in Hayll where he felt that the Long-Lived lorded their near immortality over others.

When the rebellion surged, it was Lady Lana who urged Sofia to leave Hayll and return to Dena Nehele where she would find her place and learn from her people.  There were rumors that the contracts against Queens were no longer enacted and a new Queen had come into power with support of the guilds. A Dark Jeweled Queen of Dena Nehele could do more good there than in Hayll. She would be the first their land had known in a long time.  Most surprisingly of all, was that Charina was in agreement and though Sofia had fears nurtured throughout the years by Charina herself, she also felt the call to know the place of her birth and the culture that her mother and father spoke of with such awe and nostalgia. Relenting, knowing the rebellion was upon them, she now returns to Bidea, hiding her Green Jewel to begin anew in a stranger world.

    Character in Play:

    “What will you name itchikni?”

Fingers ran over the delicate petals of the blossoming rose. It stood apart from the rest of the bush whose buds matured from a shy pink to a bold, emblazoned red. The bush had been here, in this land of ancient things since before she arrived to tend to it, perhaps even longer than she was alive.  The main branch stretched straight up through its center always producing the crowning achievement of its display, only the richest largest flowers. Water collected on the petals and leaves, its sharp thorns a reminder that some beauty was just meant to be admired from afar.  However it was not the rest of the flowers, the ones that vined up a wooden trellis to her window in which her mother spoke of, but of a single out of place branch. The shy flower just began to warm to the sun and find its place. She had waited some time for it to mature as many of her previous attempts to join the vines had failed. Already she could see a darkened center of goldenrod, opening into tangerine, salmon ringed with a rebellion of bright  pink at the very rim of each petal.  The flower was alone among hundreds of branches of crimson, it could not be more out of place. It did not fit, and yet it thrived amongst them.

“I don't know yet. Perhaps I will name it after you. Mama-Charani’s rose?”

Her mother scoffed shaking her head, though her smile brightened from the muted melancholy that had become so common in the few days since the decision was made. For her. With her. She wasn't exactly sure which, but she had put off the farewell as long as the flower had yet to bloom and secure its graft. From there it could become its own, no longer beholden to the rest of the plant for sustenance. Its roots would grow and already tiny legs were beginning to emerge.  The flower shivered in the cool breeze and she pulled her hand away. The sun to her back she could examine her creation. “Whatever you come up with will be wonderful. Is it ready?” her dia asked and though Sofia did not turn to look, she did not have to in order to know they shared the same tightening in their chest. It was time. Mother to daughter, heart to heart they knew. Her family, her life was here and she was expected to start a new in a place that in her mind had rejected her. Charani would have frowned had she captured her daughter’s thoughts and insisted for what felt like a dozen times that Dena Nehele, despite the decisions that led them to Hayll, was home. Its people did not abandon her but power had a way of creating beasts that were far too hungry to sustain themselves. The choicest cut of meat had been the women of her Caste, but that had changed and she would find her place. Where she belonged.

It wouldn't help, so Sofia said nothing of her reservations. Anger and resentment were difficult to shield herself with against her mother’s pain. “You will say goodbye to Baba Lana before you go. You will write me or I will take the first coach in a long line of coaches to reach you.” Charani stiffened with the threat, raising a large wooden pole that she used to batter an elegant rug. It hung on the line just feet away from the rose bushes. “I have packed what you need and probably quite a bit of what you don't. “ Her hand tightened and she struck the rug a few times, her eyes glossing.  Lips pressing to take a slow, measured breath Charani drew back her shoulder to strike it again.

Sofia tangled her arms around her mother’s waist, resting her chin on her shoulder as she swayed slowly. Drinking from her dia’s warmth she clung, feeling the older woman still and then surrender her breath. A hand clasped Sofia’s shoulder tightening and releasing as she borrowed strength that should not have really existed. “I'll miss you. Everyday. Every hour.” Sofia whispered against her neck. She smelled of spice, and sweet ginger. Charani turned, taking her daughter’s  face in her hands, thumbs brushing beneath her honey colored eyes and holding her there before finishing the same words she had recited to her daughter every night for so many years. Her voice steady voice, unwavering. “I will miss you with every breath, counting them all until we meet again..” The embrace lingered until it would serve to shatter them both. Only then did she break away, Charani gathering her skirts and pulling the rug down from its hooks, shielding her face and the tears that beat behind her eyes for release. “The coach comes soon. Hurry. I have to get get your father a meal before...”  Her voice drifted off as she wandered into the patio and through the large glass doors into the house.

She admired the rose a second longer  and it blossomed, full and bright against her Gift. A sunrise of color, never quite conformed, it could not be any more perfect. More beautiful. Sheers sliced into the branch, separating the rogue stalk from the older growth and severing it from the safety of its communal roots. Taking a wet cloth and a but of dirt, she wrapped the thickened bark in a piece of wet silk and cradled it in her arms.

Looking back she could say she knew all along what to name it, but never so true until she walked away.  A gift from a man and a woman who struggled, often floundering in unknown lands to save the thing they loved the most. Their hopes, their dreams, to give life where none looked so bleak and frightening,  For without, it would not exist.  A "Mother’s Sacrifice"
