Appearance

Play By: Aya Ueto
Distinguishing Features:

Shizuri is quite tiny, standing at barely 5’ even. While this may not be strange for those in Tacea, she is shorter than many people she would come across elsewhere. She has large expressive eyes and a near constant smile of some sort, and she is slender but not in an unhealthy way. Rather she has lean muscle without a lot of definition. Shizuri keeps her hair cut short, above her shoulders because she finds this to be more practical.

Personality

Personality:
Shizuri is simultaneously the good cop and the bad cop. Bright and sunny, she can often (but not always) lull someone into a false sense of security, only to pull the rug out from under them with a simple change in her smile that promises pain and suffering. She uses her short stature to her advantage in this way, playing at being innocent--or at least, as innocent as a Black Widow can be--with kind smiles and light jokes.

And she is almost always smiling. It’s only the type of smile that changes, ranging from a truly joyful smile, to predatory, to one that is more of a grimace than anything else. If there is absolutely no smile, though, it’s time to start running. Trip the closest person and just run.

Sometimes the constant smiles make her appear to be a bit of a space cadet, or as though she’s not taking the current situation seriously. It doesn’t help that she tends to bounce when she’s excited, or almost skip around. The perceived lack of seriousness couldn’t be further from the truth. She takes her job, whatever it is at the time, very seriously; Shizuri just doesn’t see an issue with having some fun at the same time, especially when the work happens to be something she really enjoys doing.

In general, the effusive cheer isn’t always a front, but sometimes it is. Sometimes the smiles are a shield to hide fear or sadness, and truly take on the saying of ‘grin and bear it.’ This used to be the case much more often right after the death of each of her parents, but the grief is not so sharp anymore, except around the anniversary.

The bad cop routine generally comes out when Shizuri is working for the seedier side of her family’s business. Even though they have been trying to extricate themselves from it for years, it hangs on, and Shizuri doesn’t mind it so much. She finds it fun to ‘play with her food’ as one of her sisters calls it.

Likes:
  • Brightly colored clothing: there is hardly any black in Shizuri’s wardrobe. She’ll wear it if she absolutely has to, like when she’s part of the crew doing special effects or working for her family’s minor less than legal business, but if it’s not a requirement, it’s just not her thing. All the black outfits look exactly the same, too, since they amount to a work uniform.

  • Crowds: due to her small stature, Shizuri has no problem getting lost in a crowd, which is often helpful when she needs to sneak away. She can easily slip between people, and combined with shields and some illusion spells, she can sometimes appear to simply vanish. Shizuri also enjoys crowds when she’s creating special effects at a performance; she’s energized by them even though their cheering isn’t really for her.

  • Physical contact: from a casual hand on a person’s arm while talking to sex and everything in between, Shizori wants it. She likes to cuddle, hug, tickle and caress. It makes her feel connected to other people on a superficial level and she can’t quite understand people who don’t like the same, but she does usually respect their boundaries when she realizes they’re there. Sometimes she’s a little slow at realizing that, though.
Dislikes:
  • Rain: it’s just so dreary! And sad! While Shizuri enjoys the fresh smell of outside after it rains, while its raining, she tends to feel sad. Thunderstorms are different--she loves the energy from thunder and lightning, but just a gray, rainy day is such a downer.

  • Silence: Shizuri likes to talk. A. Lot. She’ll talk endlessly at anyone who will let her and doesn’t always pick up on social cues that she’s monologuing and really should stop now. Part of why she talks so much is because silence makes her uncomfortable and she feels like she should fill it by saying something. Being quiet, even in companionable silence, is a rarity to her, usually reserved for the bedroom or when she is especially tired.

  • Reading: sure some books are about interesting topics, but Shizuri would much rather be doing something than reading about it. She has a tough time sitting still and concentrating on the words in front of her and doesn’t always take in all of the information because she’s either just skimming or her mind is jumping around to other things. Shizuri also has a tough time simply with the action of reading and feels like she struggles more than others do, although she’s not sure why this might be. She has the same issue with writing.
Fears:
  • Mice: the way they scurry and dart around sets Shizuri on edge. If she sees one, or merely thinks she sees one, she’ll be up on the nearest chair or table before she realizes what’s happening. In these instances, unflattering shrieks are not uncommon, much to her chagrin. A mouse sighting is definitely a no-smile moment. Unfortunately this is something her younger sister picked up on quickly and mice illusions just so happen to be her favorite kind to create.

  • That her sisters won’t be able to take care of themselves since she’s leaving Tacea: their grandmother is aging, and Shizuri is concerned that her sisters will end up on their own once she dies. Both have encouraged her to leave, reminding her that they’ve gotten much of the same training as she has had, but she still worries, especially because the two of them don’t always get along so well and she was often their peacekeeper growing up.

  • Deep relationships: Shizuri is usually a happy person, and despite her love of physical contact, the loss of her parents and aunt have shown Shizuri that she could lose anyone she cares about in an instant. Combined with knowing how dark the world can really be by seeing the effects of Tacea’s crime world first hand, she finds it difficult to fully trust and open up to others. Her smiles are both real and a facade, a shield to keep others away because she’s afraid of getting close, only to lose them.
Craft Strengths:
  • Whimsy Craft: since Shizuri’s family’s business is special effects for stage performances, Shizuri has had lots of experience at various aspects of this skill. Just after her Birthright ceremony, she started helping with performances, where she would create very minor effects. Her skills grew through teaching and practice.

  • Shadow Building: this was a skill Shizuri was taught by her grandmother. She uses it for both of her family’s business and developed a way to weave the spell into her sight shields in an attempt to allow herself to disappear better, hopefully causing the eyes of Darker Jeweled Blood to slide away from her or notice simple shadows rather than her presence itself.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Witchfire: wouldn’t it be great to be able to add awesome fire and cool, fancy flashes to the special effects shows she and her family put on as part of performances? Shizuri sure thinks so. Too bad her witchfire attempts are unpredictable at best and highly dangerous at worst, so someone else always has to do that part. She can add small flashes with witchlight, but the effect is nowhere near as impressive as witchfire. Unfortunately this inability seems to run in her family as it was a witchfire incident that killed her mother.

  • Communication Craft: perhaps fortunately for those in Shizuri’s sphere, she is not great at making psychic connections. It often takes her several tries to succeed, and if a person is more than a short distance away, it might not work at all. The exact distance seems to vary, making it all the more difficult for her to pin down whether or not she’ll actually be able to talk to the person she wants to.
Life Story

Family:
Grandmother: Juai Yukimura (b. 113 AP), Rose to Opal Black Widow
Mother: Sarina Yukimura (b. 135 AP), Yellow to Rose witch
Father: Nobuo Yukimura (b. 134 AP), White to Tiger-Eye Prince
Sister: Namiko Yukimura (b. 160 AP), White to Tiger-Eye witch
Sister: Rito Yukimura (b. 165 AP), Tiger-Eye to Summer-Sky witch

History:

Shizuri was the second daughter born to her parents, later followed by her little sister. Her parents were very proud to have three daughters. From young ages, they were taught basic Craft, practicing spells that would be useful for their family business of creating special effects at live performances. These ranged from plays and ceremonies to orchestra performances. Much more recently, they dabbled in rock concerts at the request of the youngest generation, though the older relatives are not too keen on it.

Along with their legitimate business, they were involved in small time crime dealings, doing things like delivering illegal goods such as drugs. This came about out of convenience and because it paid well, especially during times when there were lulls in demand for their other skills. As a young child, Shizuri was vaguely aware of this, but only in the sense that sometimes her parents were gone at night, and that no one would talk about why. Sometimes they seemed nervous, but they wouldn’t tell her about that either, even when she asked.

At her Birthright, Shizuri thrilled to receive the Summer-Sky. From there, she began learning more Craft, though not too advanced since she was only eight. When her snake tooth came in, Shizuri’s family grew very excited, especially her Grandmother, who started her Black Widow training. She also began learning skills that were geared towards their illegal work, such as how to defend herself and escape bad situations, though Shizuri didn’t really start participating in it until her late teens.

Just before Shizuri’s Offering, her mother died in a deal gone bad. In a last-ditch effort, she tried to defend herself with witchfire, which quickly went out of control. Thankfully no buildings burned down, but this was the only bright spot. It was then that Shizuri’s grandmother, Juai, decided that they were going to focus solely on their special effects work and drop the rest, in part because one of the Kagen was trying to take control, and they wanted to avoid getting themselves into trouble if some of the people they worked for didn't want to fall in line. At first, Shizuri agreed, driven by grief.

It was this grief, according to the Priestesses, that meant Shizuri descended only one rank, to the Purple-Dusk at her offering. Shizuri’s grief increased because now she was grieving what might have been for her own life, along with her mother. Still, she smiled through this, trying to remain strong, hoping that if she pretended to be happy, eventually she would be happy again.

Juai’s plan to extricate her family from crime did not go as planned. It meant breaking contracts and verbal agreements, neither of which went down well. Secretly, Shizuri couldn’t help but be happy about this. The danger provided her with a rush that let her forget everything else, even momentarily, and she lived for it. After a while, it was not so secret anymore, causing friction between Shizuri and her grandmother. Elders were to be respected, but Shizuri couldn’t help but want to keep doing it anyway.

On her way home one night, hidden from view with a sight shield, she came across an altercation, where there appeared to be only one victim with several attackers. After a moment, she recognized the victim as Akira no Kagen. Seeing the opportunity to help her family’s legitimate business through having him hopefully hire them more, Shizuri jumped into the fray to save him.

This failed spectacularly. While she managed to distract them a bit, it certainly wasn’t the amazing rescue she had briefly imagined, where she would swoop in and vanish along with Akira. At least she got the swooping in part right. They managed to get away in the end, and it did result in more business for her family and a friendship with Akira, but she still thought that could have gone much better.

Although Shizuri’s family was from mainland Tacea, she still suffered a loss when Mount Mago erupted. Her aunt was on the island searching for new business opportunities, and Shizuri’s father had gone with her to assist. They were not among the survivors who made it off the island. Although she has done her best to move forward, the grief lingers behind Shizuri’s smiles.

Through Akira, Shizuri was connected to Toyani no Kagen. With the Queen is forming a court in another Territory, it was suggested that Shizuri be her court seer. It was a completely different role than Shizuri had ever filled, but it sounded like a fun challenge, one that would allow her to experience somewhere new. It also gave her a way to hopefully escape the lingering grief over her parents’ and aunt’s deaths that remains pervasive in her family.

Character in Play:

Shizuri did not feel ready for this, but her protests fell on deaf ears. Her mind felt clouded as she forced herself to smile at the Priestess in front of her, ready to take her up to the altar. It was a brittle smile and it didn’t reach her eyes. All Shizuri could think about was that her mother wasn’t here waiting for her, supporting her. Her grandmother was as well as her older sister, but it just wasn’t the same.

As Shizuri headed to the altar, she did her best to focus her brain, to think about what she was supposed to be doing now, but it was difficult. Her brain felt foggy, and it was as if she was watching herself walk up rather than doing it herself. Still, she smiled at the Priestess as she began the ritual, and by the end of it Shizuri had her new Jewel.

The Purple-Dusk. It was lovely and bright and not at all what Shizuri wanted. A single descent. It could hardly get worse than this. She was supposed to descend to the Green, or at least to the Opal. Perhaps the Green would have been enough to help extract her family from the troubles they were tied up in.

The Priestess was silent as she walked Shizuri away from the altar. Shizuri stared at the Purple-Dusk, wishing she could give it back and try again when she was feeling better, less empty. When her mind was focused rather than thinking about everything at once.

There was an expectant look on her grandmother’s face when she came into view, which turned to a frown when Shizuri realized there wasn’t a smile on her own face. Knowing she had no other choice, Shizuri held out her cupped hands to display her new Jewel, watching her grandmother, hoping she would not be too upset. The older woman’s face did not change, but Shizuri saw the disappointment in her eyes anyway and closed her hands again. With a silent deep breath, Shizuri pulled a smile onto her face. If she pretended to be happy about it long enough, maybe it would eventually be true.

Dash is letting me snag the Summer-Sky to Purple-Dusk roll from Akira no Kagen's sheet purchased here, so could I have cut/uncut rolls for those, please? With +10 for the single descent. And five family rolls? :D
