    Personality

    Personality:
Shiro’s presence in a room is not seen or heard so much as felt. The Warlord Prince speaks rarely, when he does it is often at a level barely heard above a whisper. He forces others to bend toward him to hear, to strain to understand. In this he draws power from others and takes control of a room. Those who have attempted to have him repeat his comments have found disastrous consequences.

When he was a younger man, Shiro had grown up in the shadow of a titan. His mother was feared and deservedly so. He grew up in a time of war and had lost cousins and friends before he’d made his Offering. He is unusual in Tacea given that he knows how to read and write and commands rather than serves. All of this has made him keenly aware of his status and the precariousness of it. It has made him deadly serious, but not all of it unforgiving. He has come to understand the preciousness of the moment; be it in words said to a loved one, in the sights and sounds that will never come again, and in the finality of action.

He is a man with a stone exterior. He is unflappable and unshakeable. He is a Warlord Prince that people cannot recall seeing show emotion. And yet it would be a mistake to confuse him with his mother and his younger sister. To them the cold face was a facade, but to Shiro it is part of him. He does not suppress his emotions, he does not allow others to affect his own. He is a deeply passionate man; for his wife, for his children, for the work that he has built, and in the Kagen name. He views his work as service to the Clan of the highest order, for the criminal empire he has helped shape fuels their coffers, gives them unparalleled reach, and puts them into a prime position in case a war begins again.

For while Shiro prefers peace, he has been preparing for war since he was sixteen years old.

    Likes:
    • His Wife and Children: Shiro’s wife, Nuan, is youngest daughter of a wealthy Tang merchant. Her betrothal to him was one of the last acts his mother had made before her illness. Their first five years together were difficult, but the last ten have been wonderful. Nuan and him have come to appreciate one another, both for each-other’s pride and their own intelligence and brilliance. They now work in step and as a team, rather than as competitors. Nuan has taught him much about himself and fatherhood has been the thing that agreed with him most. He dotes on his children. While he is hard on them at times, he is also the one who secretly spoils them behind his wife’s back.

    • The Tang: Shiro has always respected the Tang, ever since he was a young man and Nuan’s mother fought alongside his own. Yet his marriage to Nuan has made that respect grow to admiration and then love. He believes the Tang are deeply underappreciated in Tacea and the destruction of their home has saddened him greatly. He has put forth the efforts of much of his empire to rescue what (and who) can be saved from Chang’an. While eventually much of that will be sold on a black market, it will at least be out there, rather than burnt to a crisp or buried beneath ash.

    • The Finer Things: Wealth has its privileges and crime pays very well. He has become accustomed to finer clothing, suits made in mainland fashion, and luxurious spa treatments. Shiro’s skin is soft and he has a near-feminine perfect set of eyebrows and hair at all times.
    Dislikes:
    • His Siblings: Shiro has disdain for most of his siblings. He felt Mayu was disappointment to his mother, who deserved someone stronger willed as her heir. As such he has never respected his eldest sister to that position and always treated her in that light. Hideto’s loyalty to Yuki is seen as a betrayal to the Clan. Akira is a prostitute and a deviant. And Toyani is a grasper and spoiled child. He sees them all as wayward and has no patience for them.

His mother should have stopped with him.

    • Tacea’s Discrimination: It rankles Shiro deeply to not be able to be Aimi’s heir in the open. He dislikes how the Tang (and to a lesser degree, the Hanwa) are treated. He has a son and he is making sure he has as much of an education as his daughter. Tacea is locked into tradition that is wrong and he continues to push for it to grow every day.

    • The Wheel of Succession: Shiro remembers the war that his aunt brought to an end. To him the other Clans have no right to rule Tacea. It was the Kagen that unified them by blade and pen. The Wheel of Succession has led to civil war, the dereliction of duty by the Ariake, and mass murder by the Izayoi that have claimed more of his blood. It is time for a Kagen dynasty, now more than ever.
    Fears:
    • The Tang being fully assimilated: There are not many Tang left. They were never fully respected by the other Clans, though the Kagen had. There are many within his own Clan that suggest that the Tang should just take on the names of the mainland and their customs should die with their city. While Shiro does everything in his power to stop that, he is only one man. He fears his children’s children will grow up not knowing of their rich history and it is a point of restlessness in him.

    • Toyani ruining everything: His sister is too self-centered, too unstable, and too greedy to understand everything that he and his mother built. She never knew their mother, only the stories she’s heard. But she has the Red and because she is a Queen people will follow her, even into destruction. He will never show her his fear, but he does fear what she will bring in the coming years, and if her sociopathy will cause harm to his children and his wife.

    • Civil War: The madness of Ishiyo has refreshed memories of the war. At times Shiro does not sleep and instead paces the garden of his home in thought. Tacea is in a more precarious state than ever. The new generation, like Toyani, have grown up in a Tacean Golden Age (provided by the Kagen’s hard work) and do not understand the folly of their grasping. He fears the blind will lead them all to war again and with the mountains burning they will not have the foresight to save themselves.
    Craft Strengths:
    • Physical Enhancement: Shiro grew up in war and has trained with the traditional strengths of the Kagen Clan. When he hits you, you don’t get back up.

    • Skin Tight Shields: The other part of his Clan’s renowned skills, Shiro constantly shields himself beneath his clothes. A precaution that has stuck from a life of crime and war.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Power Bolts: The Kagen learn how to use throwing weapons and their blades, hands, and feet. He has never bothered to learn this coward’s craft, and he would not know where to start.

    • Incite Rage: There is power in focus and in fury, and Shiro’s organization is a haven for young men who do not wish to become an emasculated Geisha or be a trophy wife. He has a number of Warlord Princes on his payroll, but is frustrated he’s never been able to hone their fury into a weapon, or generate the same effects of the Killing Edge in the Princes and Warlords in service to him.

    History:
Shiro grew up during the era of the Warring Dragons. The oldest son Aimi no Kagen, one of the premier spymasters and strategists of the Kagen and the sister to the legendary Hinata no Kagen, he grew up preparing for war as was expected to be a soldier. His mother was a progressive and agreed with her sister’s stances on opening the world to men. As such she expanded Shiro’s lessons from more than the traditional sosho that was handed down from father to son.

His mother began work on cultivating criminal contacts and expanded the Kagen’s influence into the underworld during the war. The criminals of Tacea did business with everyone, but in time they began to prioritize working for and with the Kagen. His mother was strong willed and ruthless and war had sharpened her into a calculating and cold creature who saw that the only way to peace was a Kagen dynasty that would last for a thousand years. She began organizing her criminal contacts and used blackmail and extortion to expand the Kagen’s power during the war.

As the war came to an end and Aimi and Hinata feuded over the call to begin the Wheel of Succession anew. Aimi thought it was folly where as Hinata thought it the key to peace. But Aimi never trusted the other Clans and so she threw all of her energy into growing the criminal group she had begun. In this, she expanded the Kagen’s reach into the lands of the Tang and the Hanwa, finding weak points in the other Clans to keep them in check behind closed doors. Aimi worked hard to help her sister’s golden age through webs, intimidation, and at times assassination of those plotting ruin to the Kagen rule.

It was this world Shiro grew up in and became instrumental to. He served as his mother’s trusted lieutenant, and after he had his Offering he became her strong arm and enforcer. While Mayu showed none of the aptitude that Aimi had hoped would come to her heir in their black work, Shiro did, and she groomed him to be her soft voice and her arm in the rising days of Hinata’s rule.

While his mother turned to care more for her twin sons as they were approaching their birthright, Shiro took on a more active role in the organization. He would speak with his mother’s voice and it had begun to be known that Shiro and Aimi’s words were uniform. There was no question that Shiro held her absolute confidence, and indeed she trusted him implicitly. He was the heir she had wanted (if the wrong sex), and his strength of character reaffirmed her faith in the male sex and its potential.

One of Aimi’s last acts was before her pregnancy with Toyani was to betrothe Shiro to the youngest daughter of one of her closest allies among the Tang. Shiro did not appreciate being married off to a woman who hadn’t yet hit her Offering, especially to the Tang (though it was better than one of the other Clans). But his mother set him in his place and reminded him that the war had been won thanks to the blood and sacrifice of the Tang. To disrespect them was to disrespect the Kagen themselves.

That harsh reminder helped shape his interactions with Nuan. According to the marriage contract he was allowed to keep his last name. He saw her through her Virgin Night and though their first few years were difficult, as Nuan wanted to take on the role of master of their household. Seeing his mother degenerate after Toyani’s birth gave him patience for Nuan and their arguments, as he saw it as honoring her wishes to make the marriage work. Even after the birth of their first child, a girl, it was difficult.

No great event turned their relationship, just the building of conversations and hard work together as a couple and as parents that helped generate mutual respect for one another. Nuan’s education was different from Shiro, and her insights into his work as he cemented his role as the Kumicho were invaluable. In time he came to trust Nuan as his greatest adviser, and he became her strongest supporter as they intertwined business, pleasure, crime and legal business.

Toyani’s self-imposed exile had given Shiro some breathing room. While he did not fear his little sister per se, he was glad that she did not claim the Ebon Gray at her Offering. He had hoped she would come to recognize there was no need for her to try and steal his place at the head of the table, what with the Clan Seat available to her. They could have, in time, come to work together. But Toyani was unstable and entitled to the world because she was a Queen, and she was an endless source of frustration. In truth, he resented her because her birth had stolen his mother’s mind, and he had made no secret of his feelings to her on the matter as she came more of age and sharpened her knife toward him.

But now he has larger concerns than a petulant child; even a Red Jeweled one. With Ishiyo no Izayoi’s massacre of one great clan and the accusation of guilt to another, Shiro must turn his eyes toward the future of Tacea. He has some hope that Seung Corro’s place as the new leader of the Territory will expand the opportunities for his son as he grows of age, he also is pragmatic about the idea that this is a temporary measure. While Chang’ha sits beneath ash and rubble, Shiro’s become more cognisant than ever that Tacea is in a precarious state.

He readies the men and women who serve he as the Kumicho, for if war is to come, they will be invaluable weapons to the Kagen.

    Character in Play:
“You have erred.” Shiro’s voice was barely above a whisper in the small room. The young man, Keto, who sat across from him squirmed. The Warlord Prince’s eyes were like twin orbs made of tourmaline, small bits of light coming from them in the dark room. ”You were responsible for the shipment, and your lack of focus caused its disruption and its loss.”

Keto had, up until now, done well. He had shown a propensity for focused violence when it was needed and a charisma that was necessary for someone who could, eventually, lead others. This had been his second real opportunity after his first mission had been a success. But this abysmal failure, caused by the Keto’s arrogance and distraction with alcohol and a handsome boy he had taken a shining to was a black mark against his path for success. Keto was late to the pickup, which meant that it was now missing and possibly stolen.

It was known Keto hadn’t stolen it, just missed it. Shiro knew because the boy Keto liked was on his payroll (unbeknownst to the sweating young man in front of him). Homosexuality personally disgusted Shiro, but there was a market for it, and he wouldn’t berate the man for increasing the business.

    Just for losing it.

”You will be responsible for recovering it. If you cannot, you will be responsible for its value.” Shiro conjured a knife, a smooth and elegant curved dagger, and floated it across the table toward Keto.

”And a blood sacrifice.” The pinky on his sword hand would do.

Shiro is Ready for Review. I'd like Reid's approval on it for some canon stuff.
