Distinguishing Features: Elham keeps her hair cropped very short and dresses modestly in simple masculine clothing. She wears no makeup, no jewelry. Her khanjar is always at her hip, proudly proclaiming her status as a warrior.

Personality

Personality:

Where her wife is passionate and outspoken, Elham is reserved and quiet, organized and deliberate. The intensity that runs through the Blood is not absent from Elham, but she channels it all into her role as a warrior. Anger and adrenaline are poured out into precise and controlled physical movements and applications of combat craft. It's not that Elham isn't emotional, but that she only reveals that side of herself to those close to her.

Elham is always thinking, calculating. She's vigilant of what's around her at all times due to her warrior training, and tracks the people around her with barely a conscious thought. It's not that she's always looking for a fight or even expecting one, but she's prepared if she needs to be. Her drive to protect those she loves is very strong: if anyone came after Naya or her children, the response would be automatic, swift, and lethal.

Get to know Elham a little, and you'll see beyond her calm, watchful surface. With her friends and family she's warm, caring, and empathetic. Elham is a good listener, and has a natural sense for when to just let someone vent and when to give advice or assurances. When she plays with her children her eyes sparkle with laughter and mischief, and she can usually be found play-wrestling or chasing Salma, Yari, and Barin around the courtyard before dinner. Her sense of humor is dry and can be self-deprecating, and people who don't know Elham often can't tell when she's joking.

The last few years have changed Elham as a person. The Geiba Massacre and death of Naya's mother, marriage, parenthood, and the death of Elham's own father all happened so fast and so close together, sometimes it all feels like a bizarre dream. She now has lines on her face where there were none, evidence of the emotional battery her family has weathered together. Elham has become even quieter and more serious since her father's death, feeling she has to stay strong for the children and Naya. She's taken to spending more time alone at night after the children are in bed, shutting herself in her room and sobbing into her pillow, ashamed of her lingering grief and of the water she can't stop wasting on tears.

Likes:
  • Naya. Naya, Naya. She is Elham's heart, her sun and her moon. She is like water in the desert, like part of Elham's own body: without Naya, Elham would surely wither and die.
  • Feeling strong. Elham has spent most of her life training her mind and body to be sharp and fast and sturdy. The energy that courses through her also flows through the sand and the mountains and the Darkness, and Elham honors that energy by building her strength in body and Craft.
  • Being a mentor. Elham loves her job. In teaching children to fight, she gets to see them build confidence and life skills, and grow as people. She's excellent with children, and she wouldn't trade her job for anything.

    Dislikes:
  • Meat. She'll eat it if there's no other option or if meat needs to be used up, but Elham has never felt particularly good about eating dead animals. She'd rather get her protein from legumes, eggs, and dairy.
  • Idleness. Time can always be filled, and to waste time is to disrespect what Mother Night has granted you. Children who complain of boredom are given training or meditation exercises.
  • Elaborate clothing. Especially elaborate feminine clothing. There are so many components and extras and there are wrong ways to wear it and people will form opinions about you based on the way you look. She has one tunic made of slightly nicer fabric than her everyday ones, and she pretty much refuses to dress up beyond that.

    Fears:
  • Someone coming for her family. Saiph's followers came for the Geiba. The followers of the Mineborn came for those who followed Adramelech. Elham is haunted by loss, and has recurring nightmares of nameless, faceless men dragging her wife and children away in the night.
  • Naya leaving her. To anyone else, this is a clearly ridiculous and irrational fear, but not to Elham. She worries that one day her wife will realize how silly it is to be married to someone who doesn't like sex, come to her senses, and leave Elham for a Warlord Prince.
  • Elenor's rule. How can a foreign interloper Queen possibly know what's best for Elham's Clan? At best, Elenor will make a mockery of the Sabbah's traditions, step on toes, and hurt families like Elham's. At worst, people will die. One option is clearly worse, but they're both pretty bad.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Combat Shielding: As part of warrior training, Elham learned to use shields to shove and trip and confine her enemies. She was top of her class, and is able to use them precisely and in quick succession.
  • Battlefield Triage/Healing: It won't be pretty by any means, but Elham has trained to be able to stabilize the severely wounded, quickly. They'll probably require revision by a Healer, but they'll live until then.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Whimsy Craft. As useful as it would be to keep her children entertained, Elham just never got the hang of using Craft for fun. It's unintuitive and awkward when she tries, and she's unable to produce more than a few sparks of light.
  • Reading Emotions. Elham is an empathetic person, but this type of Craft doesn't come easily to her. Instead, she relies on body language and facial expressions to show her what the people around her are feeling.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Gulnaz al-Sabbah, descent yellow witch. Born 132 AP, age 61.

    History:

Elham's earliest memories are of running shirtless around the Sabbah camp with the other little boys, wrestling and play-fighting in the dust, throwing rocks at scrub-brush, catching lizards and climbing boulders. She counted down the days until her sixth birthday and the start of warrior training, and took to it like a bird to the air. Elham fought hard and studied Craft diligently, becoming one of the top in her class, male or female. She emerged from her Birthright ceremony with her Rose jewel and reveled in the strength it granted her.

She met Nayarreh al-Sabbah for the first time on Naya's very first day of warrior training. She was little and ill-suited to training, and Elham immediately established herself as Naya's protector and friend. She helped Naya with the more difficult physical sequences, let Naya practice her abysmal shields on her, and ate lunch with her every day. They became inseparable.

Puberty crept on slowly and treacherously, and while Naya relished the changes in her body, Elham resented them. She had known herself so well, been so comfortable with her body, and it had betrayed her. Nearly all of her female friends were dropping out of warrior training, but Elham made it clear that she intended to continue through to her Trials. Her family was unsurprised– their daughter had always been a tomboy, and this was a perfectly socially acceptable way for her to express that as an adult.

Though they no longer trained together, Elham still spent every free moment with Naya. She listened with interest and a little jealousy when Naya talked about having crushes on boys, trying to imagine herself kissing a man and just not really being able to picture it. She never really felt that kind desire for another person to touch her– or, at least, the feelings Elham did have didn't seem to match up with what Naya told her. Her heart wanted nothing to do with anyone else. She was happy just to be near Naya, to hold her hand and cuddle her and exist with her. There wasn't one single moment when they realized they were in love– it was more that Elham and Naya always had been, and it took them until their twenties to see it.

Their vastly different levels of desire nearly tore them apart. Naya loved sex and wanted as much as she could get. Elham was indifferent at best and turned off at worst. Once in a blue moon she'd be in the mood to sleep with Naya, but even then the appeal was Naya's pleasure, not her own. They finally found a compromise: Naya was free to pursue all the casual sex she wanted, but Elham had final say over partners and dibs over her time. It was unconventional, but it was what made their relationship work.

When Saiph al-Kaid came, things changed all-too rapidly. The despicable slavery of Tribe Geiba was brought to light, and all its tattooed members were ruthlessly slaughtered, including Naya's mother and cousin. Elham helped her through her grief, and the two of them were married at the next festival. It was a simple ceremony, their henna-stained hands joined together by Priestess Zhaleh, with a goat slaughtered afterwards to celebrate. A few months later Naya and Elham adopted two orphaned Geiba boys, Barin and Yari, and dove headfirst into parenting. They weren't the only members of their Clan to do so– many of the orphaned children were absorbed into the Sabbah, and their adoptive parents learned to lean on each other for support. Naya and Elham made sure that the traditions of their sons' Tribe were kept alive and they worked together to try and fill up the hole Saiph al-Kaid had left.

About a year after the Geiba Massacre their old friend Matin al-Sabbah stumbled into their tent. He was bedraggled and exhausted, having escaped into the mountains with his infant daughter before her Geiba mother was killed. It was plainly evident now that Salma was a Queen, and the older she grew the more difficult it was for Matin to keep her hidden. Barin Bonded instantly to Salma, and they became a motley sort of family, Matin and Salma staying with them off and on.

Loss rocked Elham's world again the day the Mineborn brought the Rains (though she wouldn't know for weeks after). Her father had served Adramelech as a warrior for years, and was one of those killed in the chaos in that square. Elham wasn't even in Onn at the time, but she still feels like she should have been there. What use is being a warrior if you can't protect the people you love? The northern range where her family was camped was too far for Elham's mother's psychic thread to reach, and Elham was informed of her father's death by a sandrider messenger. Now it was Naya's turn to help her wife through grief.

After so much turmoil, their little family of four found some much-needed stability. Matin was called back to Onn by his mother, High Priestess Zhaleh, and Naya, Elham, Barin, and Yari followed. They agreed to help Matin raise Salma, housing the child Queen and keeping her safe from the world of politics. They settled in well: Naya opened a permanent ice cream shop, and Elham was able to continue her role as a fighting instructor for the Clan's young warriors.

    Character in Play:
(Adel al-Sabbah used with permission from mu!)

Elham had known from the moment she'd met the girl that she and Adileh al-Sabbah were cut from the same cloth. She was a half-naked barefoot wild thing, running and playing with the boys, scrappy and rough around the edges like Elham herself had been so many years ago. One look, one second of eye contact was enough to establish that they were somehow alike, born under the same queer star sixteen years apart. Adileh was far too frilly a name for girls like them, and Elham quickly shortened it to Adel. It was strong, sturdy, and easy to bark out from the other side of the training grounds. She took Adel under her wing and taught her everything she knew about being strong and confident and secure.

Watching High Priestess Zhaleh try to mold her daughter into the perfect young Priestess was difficult. Elham had so much respect for the woman, agreed with nearly all her political positions, but Zhaleh clearly didn't understand her daughter. Or perhaps she understood too well, and couldn't accept what Adel so plainly was. Elham tried her best to give Adel space to decompress. That Adel's future was so strictly dictated by her caste hurt Elham's heart. She'd never realized it before, but watching Adel be forced into utterly-female Priestess training made Elham so grateful. Grateful for her caste, and most of all grateful that her family had understood, had supported her decision to train as a warrior and earn her khanjar. Zhaleh seemed so determined to not only sculpt her daughter into a well-formed Priestess, but into a miniature version of herself, and the more Adel resisted the harder her mother pushed.

Adel turned up one night after dinner at Elham and Naya's tent, face clouded. She explained to Elham that she'd just had her first blood, that that afternoon had been her last day of warrior training with the rest of her friends, that she was only allowed to work with the Oasis Guardians now, and thanked Elham for all she'd done for her. Elham's heart shattered. She pulled the teenager into her tent, sat down across from her, and looked sternly into her puffy eyes.

"Listen to me. You are a Priestess, but you have the heart of a warrior. Your mother can't see it, but I can. Naya can. It doesn't matter that you can't come to regular training anymore. You will present yourself here, twice a week in the evening before dinner, and I will work with you. You will not neglect your Priestess training, but your physical talent won't go to waste. Is that understood, Adel?"

Adel nodded mutely, and Elham returned the nod. "Now go, get a good night's sleep. I'll see you tomorrow, right after you're dismissed from your other lessons."

Elham watched as the young girl got up to leave, and waited until she was nearly to the tent flap before speaking again. "And Adel? I don't think your mother needs to hear about your continued training." Elham winked, so quickly it might have been imagined. Adel just nodded again, and stood stunned for a moment before slipping away.

Elham's heart pounded in her chest. She shouldn't be going against the wishes of her clan's Priestess. She knew it was wrong. But something deep within Elham told her she was doing the right thing.
