Appearance

Play By: Lenny Kravitz

Distinguishing Features:

Terrible scars on his back, particularly at the points where his “Wings” should be.  The scars there are thick and the cut was clearly not a clean one.  His back is also criss-crossed with other scars, from beatings endured, and arena fights survived.  There are scars all over his body, in fact, but the worst of the lot are on his back.

Personality

Personality:

As Rufius, he had always had a sense of wanting something more, a general air or miasma of dissatisfaction.  He had felt this way for as long as he could remember.  Even as a child, he had known there was something more for him, that he could be more than just another Aristo.  It made him angry to be told otherwise, that he could be little more than a pampered noble, and he expressed that anger rather early on.  Only when he was challenged, was he satisfied, only when something was difficult did he feel like he was accomplishing anything.  No matter the field or the subject, even in matters of Basic Craft, he had to be pushing himself, or he simply was not satisfied.  This, he imagines, was one of the reasons the Tenebrosi Iarvis marked him early, because of his unbridled desire for a challenge and to be challenged.  Rufius views his own parents as excessive fops, wasting their own gifts, though he did not come to that realization until he was much older.

As Umbra, he is capable of assassination without any reservation.  He can be endlessly patient.  He is the result of many, many years of training and the adherence to dark vows and rituals, and it shows in his actions.  He is capable of extreme violence, but thus far expresses it with precision.  He prefers missions where he gets to express his natural rage, where he gets to be coldly efficient and deadly.  As the agent of the Tenebrosi Iarvis, he calls on the killing edge with terrible ease, and seems able to keep it in check because when he does release it, he can be brutal and final.   Umbra is also a cooperate member of the order, able to recognize his own shortcomings in Craft and Skill, and call upon the experts when he must.  He is not too proud to ask for help, so long as when the hammer falls, he is the one delivering the blow.  He is quite dedicated to the Tenebrosi Iarvis, because he believes that through them, he directly serves the Darkness if not Mother Night herself.  He believes in the supremacy of Hayll, and as before, cannot understand those that sit on their laurels when their needs would be so much better satisfied by taking action.

As Rhaegar, he is a strong straight-backed warrior who has suffered at the hands of the enemy, and tempers his cries for vengeance with service to his people.  He sees himself as a warrior first, and a leader second, though in recent years the reverse is probably a bit more true.  He still carries himself with the demeanor of a fighter, his aura, even without his Jewel, is unmistakably that of a dangerous man, despite his lack of wings.  There is a sense of surety and confidence to him, perhaps because with the loss of his wings, the worst has already happened to him, so he fears little else in the way of personal combat or war.  Rhaegar is also possessed of an excellent sense of humor, though occasionally that descends into gallows humor, and he has little patience for preconceptions or formalities, though he supposes the latter has its uses.  He is an Eyrien Warlord Prince, who appreciates the clash of blades, the hot wash of blood, and the satisfaction to be found with a willing woman.

Likes:
  • 1 A Challenge; This Warlord Prince for as long as he can remember has always enjoyed a challenge, indeed, he had yearned for such even before he knew how to articulate the desire.  Only through challenge and effort can he grow in skill, or simply in character.  He took up the challenge of the Tenebrosi Iarvis, and continues to wear that mask and meet that challenge as a deep cover agent in Askavi, Terreille.
  • 2 Physical Combat; this was a requirement of fulfilling his role, but despite a Hayllian upbringing, and their more cerebral culture, once he began to learn how to engage in hand to hand and combat with the Eyrien Warblades, he began to enjoy it.  He enjoyed the visceral feeling of slaying an an enemy with his own two hands, he had enjoyed the jarring crash of steel on flesh and bone, and the spray of hot blood.
  • 3 Deception; he is living a lie, and there is something perverse in him that is enjoying the deception and the deceit of it all.  At this point, he hardly needs to compound the act by lying as Rhaegar, when everything he does is, in essence, a lie.  He takes some pride and pleasure in being so deeply embedded in the Territory, that he also leads a Province -- which is as high an office as he dare allow for his mission.
Dislikes:
  • 1 Intellectual Lassitude; laziness, the sheer lack of desire to do or be anything than what one's fate and circumstances grant to them.  The aristocrat who is all to happy to inherit his wealth and his role, and do nothing with it.  Those who allow their money and position to be larger than they are.  Rhaegar, ironically perhaps, has always been a mover, earning his place, meeting his challenges head on.  Those who do not annoy him.
  • 2 Emotional Attachment; this is in no way crippling, but rather a psychological separation that can be summed up in terms of "Us and Them".  Umbra is Tenebrosi Iarvis, first and foremost.  If told to do so by his order, he would slit the throat of the consort he has known for a century or more.  He harbors a carefully maintained sense of separation, so that when the time comes, he is not unable to perform his duties.
  • 3 War; War is dirty, messy, and utterly lacking in precision.  It is absolute chaos, possibly guided chaos, but in no way can it be properly planned for, in no way can all variables be accounted for.  Even as he did battle in it, the part of him that was a finely honed agent of the Tenebrosi Iarvis hated it.  Participating suited his cover, but he was relieved when it was over, and he began to try his hand at politics.
Fears:
  • 1 The Ruination of his Cover; this is a legitimate fear in that it is potentially practical.  As things are settling, and the threads of the territories begin to mingle, even with all the care that he has taken, the possibility of his cover being blown is always a fear and a concern he must be prepared to deal with.
  • 2 Never Leaving Askavi; He worries that he has done his job too well, and that he will never leave Askavi while it begins to recover.  He still loves the challenge, loves that he is useful to the order and that he can still provide valuable intelligence, but the possibility of never leaving he finds deeply troubling.
  • 3 Ignoto; this is the faceless master or mistress of his order.  Umbra does not know who it is, and he does not want to know.  He had not had direct contact with this individual, having been a few layers removed while he was in operation, but the name is whispered even in the order.  If the Tenebrosi Iarvis are the bogeymen of Hayll, then Ignoto is the bogeyman of the order's agents -- certainly this is true for Rufius.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Incite Rage; He has the somewhat insidious ability to inspire the cold rage of a Warlord Prince in both Princes and Warlords.  This can be done without their knowledge, and with his Red, there are many that are vulnerable to this ability.  This Craft was part of what made him and his troops so effective in the war.
  • 2 Social Craft; charismatic leadership, or just plain charm, this Craft was a key part of his rise through the ranks in Eyrien society.  In fact, it was a key part of his deceit of his slave mentor.  He used this craft to build that Father/Son bond, and continues to use it to solidify his control and influence over his Court, and indeed, his Province.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Travel Craft; for both a Wingless Eyrien and a Tenebrosi Iarvis this is a large disadvantage.  He cannot ride the Winds up to the Red, and disliked riding either Opal or Green, even if those Winds are available.  This restricts his range, and means that going home and travelling on the Winds is unlikely.  He'll have to rely on others, or a horse, or his own two feet.
  • 2 Telekinetic Craft; he is capable of fine manipulations, but the movement of large objects, despite even wearing the Red, is difficult for him to manage.  He would rather blast such a thing to nothing, or move it with enhanced strength, because telekinesis must seem too easy to him, and so his mind turns from it.

History:

The Warlord Prince that would come to known as the Askavi Eyrien War Veteran, Rhaegar Kree, was born Rufius Tibault.  He was the Scion of one of The Hundred Families, and all but guaranteed a life of wealth and privilege.  From a very young age, Rufius had been made to understand his own importance, and had somehow been left unsatisfied by it.  Even at the tender age of five years old, he saw no joy in being handed a thing, and far preferred to strive for something and earn it himself.  He had been provided with tutors that would sooner tell his parents he was a genius, whether or not he applied himself, just so they could get their pay.  Something in the young Rufius rebelled at the notion, and seemed to reject the self-entitlement his parents seemed to think he rightly deserved.  Rufius came away with an Opal Birthright at Seven years of age, which for his parents, seemed proof of their overall attitude; while even then, Rufius felt the opposite.  He was guaranteed at least the Green, and he felt he should do something more than simply be a wealth gadabout to earn it.  At seven, he just had no idea what that would be.  The Tenebrosi Iarvis, who rarely choose from amongst the One Hundred Families, took note of this youth, and watched him without his knowledge.

For another thirteen years, Rufius grappled with what could only be called a Rich Youth’s problems.  He insisted that his tutors actually teach rather than simply give him a pass so they looked good with their employers.  In fact, Rufius reported their lies, even struck a couple viciously, and got more than one tutor punished, by claiming his Parents were being taken advantage of.  He did that when he was about ten, thereafter, he was much more satisfied with the quality and challenge of his education.  Rufius could not stomach what he saw as the intellectual laziness of his Parents.  Perhaps it was simply a flaw in his character, perhaps it was the Dark Blessing of Mother Night, perhaps his Caste, but whatever the case was, two things happened when he turned Twenty; he gave his Offering and received the Red, and he was recruited into the Tenebrosi Iarvis.  Rufius had always believed he would fully descend, thanks to his own surety, but the Tenebrosi Iarvis had surprised him, and they had given him a choice.  He could remain an agent in Hayll, walking amongst the pampered few, or he could accept a true challenge and provide an even greater service, but in utter anonymity.  Either way, he would don the mask, and wear it for centuries.

Rufius, ever seeking a challenge, chose the second option – and he disappeared from Hayllian aristocratic life.

The Tenebrosi Iarvis began to train Rufius in earnest, accepting him readily into the ranks of the Order.  His First Task; simply to agree that his Parents were the millstone around his neck, preventing his rise to greatness.  He did.  What became of them he did not ask, for he never saw them again.  Rufius was trained by the finest practitioners of Craft that most of Hayll had likely never heard of, or if they had, never knew the truth of their membership in the Tenebrosi Iarvis.  Rufius could count Black Widows amongst his teachers, as well as members of nearly every Caste.  In fact, most of his best instructors had been Female, even instructing him on the ways and nature of his own Caste and the Rut, which became a problem he had to resolve almost immediately upon his eighteenth year.  Until he was nearly thirty, his life was one of constant training and applied practice, he became the nameless and faceless hand of the Tenebrosi Iarvis, earning his way towards the goal that had been originally dangled before him, a task that would take him years to master, a task that would occupy him for centuries if done correctly.  One of his final Journeyman tasks, spending a week spying on his own House, finally earned him his name – Umbra, and so he left Rufius behind for good.

For centuries, Umbra was precisely what his name implied.  He was a shadow, he was darkness, he was faceless and he was everywhere.  He operated within Hayll, or as a returning infiltrator, for nearly five hundred years, assuring the order of not only his loyalty but his skill.  Umbra by the time his final assignment was given, had been in and out of most of the surrounding territories, operating primarily as a spy or an assassin.  The later task seemed to suit his Caste, allowing him to quietly express the violence and the cold focus of his nature, in as precise a manner as possible.  In fact, one or two of his assassinations had been disguised as outright attacks, in the guise of a brigand or a rebellious slave.  The Black Widows of the order always had his respect, and he worked closely with them to concoct disguises, and to use their webs to assist him in his deceptions.  Rufius concluded one of those decades that had the order not found and inducted in to their dark rites, he would have been pulling the wings off of insects, or dissecting cats, and eventually people.  Assassination, precisely applied murder, violence – none of these things troubled him.  The killing edge of the Warlord Prince was ever at his beck and call, and doubtless, that is true of all of his Caste, but for Rufius the process is indeed cold as opposed to hot.  This is not to say he is incapable of true rage, but the cold focus, the deadly thought process of the Warlord Prince is never far from his grasp.

Ultimately, it was this ferocity and precision that earned Umbra the Askavi assignment five hundred years before the Purge.  To prepare for it, Rufius had to learn new skills, and make certain concessions.  He was assigned with the task of finding a way to become Eyrien.  His disguise had to be perfect, his grasp of the culture had to be that of a native, or terribly close to it, with a proper story to fill in the gaps.  There had to be some truth to the lie, and so he would have to make sacrifices.  It was Rufius who discovered the Coliseum slave named Kilgar Kree.  He was a winged Warlord Prince, and the prize fighter of one of many Slavers under the thumb of the Tenebrosi Iarvis.  He was an older specimen, captured in some border skirmish, and shining in the arenas for nearly a year.  It was said that he chafed under the slave collar, but that even with the deadly risk of owning him, he was terribly profitable.  Rufius chose him as his Eyrien tutor, but first he had to make his sacrifice and earn Kilgar’s trust.  After all, Rufius had never had wings, and he never would, so he had to convince Kilgar that his wings had been cruelly taken from him.  In this, he was assisted by the Webs, Illusion and Shadow Craft of the Black Widows of the Tenebrosi Iarvis.

Kilgar had been dumped in a poorly lit cage in the subterranean halls of a privately owned arena.  His food was drugged to induce drowsiness in him, which was not uncommon, particularly if it was believed he might be in Rut.  Just as he was beginning to fall asleep, he was roused a ruckus beyond view from his position.  A scuffle that evolved into a full scale fight, and then ended with screams as someone put the collar to use.  Kilgar saw a young Eyrien male dragged past his cage, his wings gripped by his new Hayllian and clearly being painfully tugged upon.  The young Male was pulled into a room, from whence a bloodcurdling scream was released.  A moment later, the battered young Eyrien male was tossed into Kilgar’s cage, his back whipped brutally, and his flesh sliced open where once ther had been wings.  A satchel of medicines and bandages were thrown at Kilgar, and he was told that the young man’s life was on him now.  The Master wanted no part of the troublemaker anymore.  Kilgar could no more ignore the torn Eyrien than he could ignore the existence of his own wings, and so the slave Green Warlord Prince tended to the younger, making use of his own Craft of Combat Healing, allowed by his keepers, and the medical kit rudely tossed into the cage.  That was the day that Rufius, or rather Umbra, became Rhaegar.

Kilgar saved Rhaegar’s life that night, and as the young man healed, a bond began to form between them.  Rhaegar had descended Opal, but he had been taken by Hayllian slavers barely after his Birthright of Rose.  Kilgar had not seen his own sons in ages, and he had been impressed with what he perceived as the boy’s bravery.  It did not take long for a mentoring relationship to begin, and certainly Rhaegar’s apparently lacking education bore out his story of being enslaved so young.  Kilgar took it upon himself to teach the young Eyrien, not only in their culture but also in the user of the Eyrien Warblades, which he was allowed to wield in the arena.  Rhaegar spent the next ten years under Kilgar’s tutelage, learning and fighting in the arena, sometimes by his side, billed as Father and Son for the sake of spectacle.  Their bond had evolved over the years, from savior, to mentor to something that more closely the bond of Father and Son, just as their owner sold them to the public.  Kilgar inducted Rhaegar into the culture, into what it meant to be a Man of the Askavi people, and in the use of the Warblades,  In fact, Kilgar and Rhaegar would talk about what they would do if they were ever free to return home, and Kilgar told him that he would take him to the Kree Eyrie in the Province of Living Lake, and adopt him – and if Rhaegar should ever escape without him, that was where he should go.  Umbra was satisfied by that time, that he was prepared for his mission to Askavi Terreille.  His final task was to remove the only person that was not of the order that was there at the beginning.  Rufius cut Kilgar’s throat himself, he felt the older man had earned that much, and was pulled from the slave pits that very day.

Rhaegar departed with Kilgar’s Warblades, having been told they were the same weapons he had been bearing when he was captured.  Getting into Askavi would not be difficult, being accepted was the real challenge, and too that end, Rhaegar who was really Umbra who was once Rufius Tibault, sought out the Kree Eyrie, and moved through the territory with his power unveiled.  He was a scarred Red Warlord Prince, and there were few enough that could impede him, let alone those willing to try.  He ultimately made his way to the Kree Eyrie, who were involved with the Wars and Conquest of the Red Queen, and presented himself as Kilgar’s student, and told them that Kilgar had instructed him to seek them out if ever he needed a home.  He told them things only Kilgar would know; bore the lost Warlord Prince’s blades, and the terrible scars of his maiming.  Rhaegar also was a Red Warlord Prince, and with their greatest warrior having only worn the Green, they could hardly afford to turn away such a potentially influential and powerful individual   He was welcomed into the Household, and thus began the infiltration of Askavi.

Askavi Terreille was still fighting the Red Queen’s conquests, and the people of Living Lake, sent their warriors just as everyone else did.  Determined to make an unassailable reputation for himself, Rhaegar entered into battle with a bloody intensity that only a few could match.  He was somewhat remarkable because of the fact that he was maimed and without wings, but because the maiming had been inflicted upon him by the enemy, he was not pitied or ignored.  He was let loose on Hayllians, as if his superiors intended for him to prove his hatred for those that had taken his wings, and Rhaegar played his role very well indeed.  He fought under the Red Queen’s flag tirelessly, and as the war marched on, he began to rise through the ranks, earning a reputation as an especially effective storm trooper—able to smash defenses and establish beachheads where others had not been able to succeed.  Rhaegar made a name for himself, and by extension, he made a name for his House.

In time, after centuries of war, he became a member of the Red Queen’s Court, Savian Dakane-Ranosi, and joined her Third Circle when a vacancy by way of attrition appeared.  Rhaeger continued to fight in the War, despite the rise in resistance to the Red Queen’s conquest.  His hatred for Hayllians was something well known, though as time wore on, it seemed that even for the wingless-Eyrien Warlord Prince’s anger began to abate.  When the Province of Living Lake began to host whispers of resistance, Rhaegar, who had risen to Savian’s Second Circle, was sent back to the home of the Kree Eyrie, and asked to find those speaking out against her.  He did so,  finding those engaged in countering the Red Queen’s call, and after a series of personal duels, he managed to quiet the resistance and reorganize the Province, calling for diplomacy rather than violence channeled into rebellion.  In another century, he was appointed leader of the Province of Living Lake.

Rhaegar continued to support the Red Queen, albeit in quite a measured way.  He rotated the warriors of his Province back home with more regularity than most, and answered the call for more warriors and the like, with only the barest minimum.  In this way, he tried to preserve the Houses of his Province, while not engaging in outright treason against the Red Queen that had raised him so high.  In the fullness of time, The Purge became the Red Queen’s ultimate judge and confessor, and the War came to an end.  Rhaegar had been unconscious at the time.  He had experience a particularly sharp Rut, and after sating himself on his primary consort, he had been soothed into unconsciousness.  When he roused himself, much of his Household was either broken, or dead.  Those that had survived, had been, like him, asleep or otherwise protected from the rolling Witchstorm that all but gutted the Territory.  Rhaegar continued to lead his Province, and became fully engaged in the recovery of his people, reaching out once again to the Red Queen, and supporting her change of heart through to the end of her Reign.

Umbra, in his role as Rhaegar, fed his order valuable intelligence, and likely had a hand in the discomfiture of the Black Warlord Prince, Endevar Ranosi, who despite all appearances, was not apparently to the benefit of the Tenebrosi Iarvis.  When Renvar Yatskaya rose to rule the Territory, Rhaegar did not counter him, though his Province believed he had the power and influence to do so.  Instead, he supported the move, and encouraged the regrowth of the territory and the cooperation of the remaining leadership.  He was, however, a vocal opponent of reparation.  Hayll had yet to pay him a penny for his wings, after all.  Renvar had been made Master of the Guard under Endevar’s brief reign, and continued in that role, just as Rhaegar continued to manage the Living Lake Province.  Currently, Rhaegar supports the reign of the Sister Queens, and remains the Red Prince of Living Lake.

Character in Play:

There were times where Rhaegar Kree felt burdensome.  Rufius took a moment every day to remind himself who he was.  Rufius Tibault had disappeared from the ranks of aristocrats, but it was still who he was.  Umbra, agent of the Tenebrosi Iarvis, was what he was, and that mask was not a burden it was a job, a badge of office.  Rhaegar Kree was the mask, and he had suffered and sacrificed to wear it.  How many Hayllians had he laid low in his role as Eyrien Warlord Prince?  How much flesh had he sacrificed on the altar of secrecy?  Much and more, starting with his own flesh.  Such thoughts were a luxury he could not afford.  He sighed as he felt the breath of his lover at the nape of his neck, and her soft hands moving over the thick keloid scars on his back where his “wings” had once been.  He evened out his breathing, and feigned sleep.

He cleared his thoughts as he had been trained to do, and slowly subsumed them.  It was as if he were capturing air bubbles in overturned cups, and shoving them down into the deepest recesses of his mind.  Nothing of Rufius or Umbra could be allowed to bubble to the surface.  He had to be Rhaegar, from front to back, he had to have his 689 year history, and the notion that he was a little over 700, clear in his mind.  Certainly, no casual brush of Power would reveal him, but nothing short of Mind Delve by a more Powerful individual would uncover anything at all, and even that was no guarantee of breaking his cover.  In moments like those, quiet and contemplative, his greatest enemy was himself.  The Rhaegar mask was an old one, and it was easy to pull it completely on.  He continued to pretend sleep, and then slowly rolled towards his lover.

Rhaegar, as a war-wounded Eyrien, could lie down on his back, something that seemed to fascinate his current consort.  She moved over him, kissed the scars of his chest, and caressed his skin with a rolling breeze of Seduction Craft, and gently took advantage of his early morning state.  She mounted him, and spread her wings wide, and in that moment, Rhaegar had to admit that his life was not so bad.  Centuries of war, and now nearly two of peace, with a prosperous Province all around him, rich in fish and other resources seemed less burdensome as the Eyrien woman above him began to move.  It was almost a shame that he could never love her, and more of shame that for a brief moment, he considered how best to eliminate her if he had to, as well as the rest of his Court.  Ironically, this did nothing to diminish the moment…quite the opposite.

Why did this character became inactive?  Activity overall was low, and lapsed waiting for replies, and life attacked.

What will you do to prevent this character from becoming inactive again?  Remain active, and open new threads if the wait period is a long one.

What are your plans for this character?  To return to the plots and roles he was a part of,if possible

Number of previous Reactivations: 0
