Appearance

Play By:  Karrueche Tran
Distinguishing Features:
Roshan takes after her long-lived parentage in most ways.  Only the darker gold of her eyes, muddied and less clear than it should be, really gives away her mixed heritage.

Personality

Personality:
The Izar have had to fight, tooth and nail, for everything they have.  Some have done this physically, some have done it with kindness... and then there is Roshan.  Her tools have always been cunning, manipulation, sex, and fear.  Let her brothers flex their muscles and distract the enemies and opponents from the real danger of the Izar... her.

She isn't afraid to completely decimate those she views as inconvenient or as threats.  She doesn't bother hiding that fact either - and in fact seems to enjoy the caution others hold around her.  Her words are honeyed addiction, her smile a prize to be obtained at any cost.  As a child, she learned how to make the other slaves of the mines bend to her will - to grant unto her anything, everything, even their own lives.

She has hidden her heart from easy capture, and to those who do not know her well (admittedly, almost no one does) she will seem a cold and cruel spider who is willing to do anything in order to get what she wants.

The truth is - she has a heart.  She DOES care.  She cares so much that she is willing to commit any atrocity to protect those that are hers.  She has seen and survived the worst that people can throw at her - and she will ensure that her family can survive it too.  Once she believed that the only real justice in Pruul was vengeance. Now, after spending time in the Overlands, she has amended that belief. Vengeance still holds a high place in Pruul's justice - but now so too can she ensure that the need for Vengeance is avoided by removing threats before they strike.

She will be the public face of the Izar, and she will play the political game of cat and mouse - and behind every action, every statement, she will be weaving her webs to ensure that no one and nothing can take what is hers.

It is time that Pruul embrace change, and time that Pruul's people accept the Izar are here to stay.

The Izar will flourish, and their enemies will fall.  There will be no more running from her truths, and no more hiding in the shadows.  Now it is time that the Mineborn, and the Izar, step into the light.

Likes:
  • Sex- She never had the traumatizing experiences or sexual questions that some of the others do. Male, female and any combination thereof are all fair game; males are simply more convenient most times. Sex is an uncomplicated pleasure- unlike many things in the Overlands, it’s something she already knows how to do. It’s just another need to slake just as thirst or hunger for food. It is also a weapon unavailable to many of her soul-siblings and Roshan has no problem with using her looks to try twisting their enemies about her little finger when her compulsions don’t work.
  • Power- Her childhood taught her that power means safety. Since being freed from the mines, she has compulsively set out to increase her power in every way available to her (knowledge, Craft and physical training).
  • The Fear of Others - there is something just delicious about seeing and sensing others' caution and fear around her.  She is the Madness Bringer, after all.. it pleases her to see that even after the last two years, people still give her a wide berth.  In this, at least, she and Lucky are similar.  They both seem to enjoy making others uneasy.

    Dislikes:
  • Sabbah - The Geiba were a Tribe of the Sabbah.  The Mines belonged to the Clan Sabbah.  The horrors they endured, the pains and the death, are thus the property of the Sabbah.  And then.. there was Adramalech.  So the Sabbah have to work harder to get respect, let alone trust, from Roshan.  It's possible - but she doubts most of the Sabbah would think the work worth obtaining her respect.
  • Free will- Life would be so much easier if people only did as they were told- even the other Mineborn. They could trust her to look out for them. But on their own they stumble about and hurt themselves and each other, and it’s painful for Roshan to witness.
  • Being chained down- She spent a lifetime being confined to the mines and hates anything that makes her feel chained or obligated to people or places. She can stay in one place or with a people, but it’s always to a specific purpose and with the knowledge she can choose to stay or go at any time.
Fears:
  • Losing the friendship of the other Mineborn- Roshan compels and manipulates as easily as she breathes. It’s second nature by now and takes active effort to stop. She does make that effort with the other Mineborn, but would unhesitatingly use on even on them if she thought it was for their own good. So it does make her fear that their reactions aren’t real and she’s just manipulating them into liking her.
  • The Mineborn bond- It’s useful, yes, and she’s grateful to have a connection to someone else. But no one ever asked her permission to form it, some of the things that come along the link are irritating and frightening, and it makes them one hell of a target. She fears what it is capable of and what it will mean for them in the future.
  • Being devoured- Roshan regularly dreams about being swallowed, devoured by an unspecified, menacing presence. Sometimes she is the victim, sometimes her fellow Mineborn, but it always leaves her feeling unsettled and wary. This fear will extend to Clan Bali when she finds out they are called The Swallowers.
Craft Strengths:
  • Compulsion Craft (Advanced)- Compulsion was the first thing Roshan truly dedicated herself to learning:  she was a willful and determined child who grew into a willful and determined young woman, with the focus and motivation to force her will on others and know she’d succeed. It saved so much time, effort, and can be a powerful tool to motivate those who witness her ability to control her chosen prey. Her skill has only grown in the few years she was sequestered by the Sayyadina for study in her Widow's arts, taking a natural flair for this particular skill and refining it to an extra level of strength and subtlety as it takes root in the victim's mind. She has also learned how to blend the compulsion skill with a Widow's Delivery Web to affect a longer-term result on a victim.
  • Mind Webs- The more subtle cousin of her favored compulsion, Roshan has taken to this area of Widow’s Craft with a deftness that surprised and worried her tutors. From her perspective, it’s just telling someone’s mind what to do on a different scale.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Pruulian Mind-Anchor Craft- In the two years since she began studying, Roshan has never been able to master this specialty of the Sayyadina. She is so desperate to experience all she can of life that deliberately creating a barrier between herself and anything is anathema to her. She has her own anchors against madness: her focus on her Craft and her connection to the other Mineborn.
  • Mindhealing- Roshan won’t be able to fix the minds of her fellow Mineborn. She’s too broken herself and doesn’t have a good perspective on what constitutes a healthy thought pattern. She’d also have to admit there is a problem and the whole situation is something she’d rather not think about at all. If she must, she’d rather use a mind web or compulsion to control the aberrant behavior.
  • Jewel Management: Roshan is no more used to rating her power use than any of her siblings, and has a tendency to draw on her Jewel as much and as hard as necessary to go for the quick (if usually metaphorical) kill to put her target down. Her lack of facility with this aspect of Craft has only gotten more apparent in the Overlands: Roshan's zeal to take advantage of the wide array of Life and Craft available to them leaves her vulnerable to running through that power much in the manner of a Healer who's heedless of her power levels when there's a task at hand to be done.

Guardian: Felipa Pèrez y Martín, Rose - Opal Dhemlanese witch, 803.

History:

Unlike most of the other Mineborn, Roshan at least knows who her parents are, though she and they have never met. She was taken from her Hayllian mother to be raised by the Geiba Widows in her first two years, but the prisoner who volunteered to raise her thereafter was a friend her mother had made in the mines. Felipa Pèrez y Martín was a witch who’d seen service with Scarlet Company during the Great War and who had been imprisoned in Pruul by an Eyrien Prince with a wicked sense of humor after a failed attack. It was Felipa who named her Roshan, for the light the young girl might never see.

Felipa also instilled in her charge a love of adventure and justice, telling her stories about the world above and what she used to do in the Resistance. Roshan never quite believed in life outside the mines, but it was nice to pretend it existed. During the day, she fetched water, sorted rock and tried to keep her head down among the desperate and downtrodden. At nine she found a new distraction: another child in the mines, who tried to steal her dinner. The younger girl stirred an empathy and protectiveness that Roshan had never felt before. She also began the game of hide and seek that helped sharpen Roshan’s senses of observation and gave her a new sense of companionship. Khadi never had to say anything, it was enough to know the other girl was there.

Roshan’s snake tooth wouldn’t emerge for another two years, but the tenth year of her life saw her wake from a deep sleep and dreams of a yawning abyss with a rough and beautiful Jewel, her body already building the poison tolerances she would hold as an adult Widow. The Geiba poison was powerful indeed, but her physiology gave her just enough of an edge to be able to make her descent before her captors had expected. When she showed her prize to Felipa, the woman urged her to hide it and taught her as much as she could about Vanishing things and other useful Craft as she could without having a Jewel at hand herself. Then Khadi vanished for days, defying Roshan’s best efforts to track her. She eventually lured the feral girl with gifts of food and water, using what Craft she knew to help ease the girl’s pain. But her injuries were too bad and Roshan no Healer- that wasn’t where her skills lay.

It was young Khadi who inspired the next phase of Roshan’s life and made her reputation in the mines. If Roshan couldn’t be Healer, she would instead be like those women her guardian told her about and be Vengeance instead. She vowed that the Overseer and those prisoners who’d betrayed a hungry little girl would suffer as much as Khadi had. When she presented the case to Felipa, her guardian had an unusual suggestion: Felipa would teach her how to compel the offenders to take their own lives, instead of teaching her flashy Craft that could get her caught. The learning took her a long time. More than once she was beaten when a compulsion failed to take root, or had to hide when she pissed someone off instead of the prisoner being amused at the little girl trying to order him around.

But by the time she was eleven, she had her first success- talking a bitter Prince into picking a lethal fight with one of the guards. From this came others- to get food, to get out of work, to protect the odd soul who won her sympathy, or for her own amusement. She tried not to let there be too much of the last, lest Felipa find out and be disappointed. But it was a heady feeling for the young girl who was used to feeling powerless. She consoled herself with the fact that Khadi’s betrayers were among those who suffered and died, victims of Justice at last.

The day her Snake Tooth emerged was both a triumphant day and infuriating one. Roshan was proud to have presented at least one of her guardian’s castes and to have another weapon in her arsenal, but the collar that came with them was not ideal. The Geiba came to take her to her Offering after that, and Roshan simply unVanished the Jewel she’d already been given by the Darkness. But she wasn’t about to let the Geiba take the only thing standing between her and safety- the biggest success of her compulsion Craft was convincing the Widow that the woman had taken her Jewel when she hadn’t.

She experimented as her confidence with her Craft grew, never using the same tricks too often. As Roshan’s reputation among the prisoners as someone not to mess with grew, the mines’ overseers grew suspicious. But the girl was careful and multiple searches turned up nothing. They separated her from Felipa anyway, taking her mentor off to another part of the mines where Roshan couldn’t find her.

Roshan almost lost Khadi at fifteen, when the eleven-year-old got dragged off for her own Birthright. To her sorrow and fury, her warnings not to fight only got the girl hurt worse. She lost track of her friend again, this time for weeks. Her fellow prisoners quickly learned to flee the infuriated Black Widow, who saw no problem with taking her temper out on anyone stupid enough to cross her at this time, or deny her information to tracks down her vulnerable friend.

Then Khadi resurfaced under the care of a Warlord Prince. Roshan stalked the pair relentlessly until she was sure she could trust Prince Ennead with the girl’s care. Something in her still balked at putting a compulsion on Khadi so the girl would keep herself safe, and Ennead turned out to be almost as good. Khadi grew strong and learned how to fight effectively and he even taught them the animal sounds that proved a useful code among them. Roshan grew comfortable enough with the Prince to ask him to handle her Virgin Night (that Felipa had warned her about years ago) when she was old enough, before one of the other prisoners could let his balls get the better of his brains and try something.

Then the pale Queen’s men came and pulled them out of the dark, offered them that big, bright world Roshan had only dreamed about. She was so fascinated with it and engrossed in asking questions of their rescuers that it was Khadi who found the others first, and dragged the Widow off to meet them.

She found the other Mineborn endlessly fascinating, each one so different, yet plucking a thread that resonated with the heart and soul of her Self.  She was leery of them too, and of the nameless feelings and shadowy visions their presence inspired in her, but slowly they drew her in. Bold Lucky, generous Hadjara, sweet-souled Omid and Ghanima with a fire to rival her own. But her feelings warned her not to get too close- she dreamed of hardship and separation and sacrifice that was somehow necessary. In time, her training would help her to understand these things were part of her birthright as a Widow. But then all she knew was to follow her gut and pour herself into that training while the Sayya scattered them to the winds. They’d survived the mines and they’d survive this too, stronger than ever.

She learned to love, and laugh, and live.  She learned to ride, to Weave, to BE the Black Widow she had been born to be.  The Sayya may have scattered her family, but her family came together to bring the Rains and kill the Spider that had tried to manipulate and control them.  She travelled to Hayll with Cadence and Khadi, fascinated by the strange land and the stranger people for a while.  She learned from a Black Widow in Hayll, for a time, and was taught to be more cut-throat in her defense of her own.  Hayll was a somewhat fascinating place, and she enjoyed many things about it.  Ultimately, she felt the call to return home.  Khadi, on the other hand, did not.

Roshan chose to return to Pruul, and Khadi chose to remain in Hayll for a while longer.  She understood the urge.  She saw the possibilities.. but the Rebellion in Hayll was not their fight!  Khadi should come home, where she belonged.  For a moment, she contemplated forcing her sister to come.  Contemplated forcing Khadi to believe it had been her own idea to return... and then she remembered that she couldn't do that.  Not really.  It would make her just as bad as Adramalech.

So she returned home, alone.  She returned to her Family, even as her Family began to grow in new directions.  Two of the Mineborn joined the Bali - but they were still family.  Her family made ties to other Clans, and Lucky began the process of creating a new Clan.  The Izar.  The home for all those with nowhere else to be.  She continues to learn from a few Black Widows in Onn, though it is through the exchange of labor for learning.

It has become clear that the Izar will need strength - they will need something that makes them fearsome to deal with, even while small.  She has taken on the role of the Master of the Guard's Second, and she is planning on training her own unit of Black Widows someday.

A unit of Black Widows that will be known as the Unseen.  This Unit will be charged with helping protect the Clan from enemies - and to defend from the shadows.  They will be the ghosts, the terrifying monsters that Pruulians will whisper of for generations.  She has been chewing on the idea of the Unseen for a year.  The Izar won't take long at all to become something unassailable once she gets a little more knowledge under her feet, she's sure.

And her?  She realized her purpose.  Her purpose is to guard and care for her family.  For all of her family.  The beginnings of her dreams, the goal, is now in her reach.  She just has to dare to grab them and hold on - to form the Unseen and make of the Izar a Clan that no one will dare to move against.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
She looked at the tray, studying the offerings upon it for poison or other mishaps. Not that she expected the one who brought it to her to have done such a stupid thing, but one must never be too carefree.  Sure, she could fight off poison witht he best of them - but that didn't mean she shouldn't be careful.

Her fingers slid forward, popping a bit of bread into her mouth as she nodded once at the hearth witch, turning her eyes back towards the display in front of her.  That display, of course, being sweating males that were sparring each other.  She rather liked watching this.  Always had.

Maybe she should invite Hadjara to join her sometime.  It would do that protective mate of hers some good to see Hadjara enjoying such a show.  And it would get little Fari used to the sight of handsome males working on her behalf.

Women needed to have better functioning brains.  Better to make her niece immune to the distractions of pretty flesh than to have to worry about trying to cause that when the girl was hitting puberty.  The very idea made her laugh, lightly, and then return to lounging on her cushion.

Yes, she would have to find a way to ensure that Hadjara saw things her way.  And she would have to speak to her sister anyways.  Hadjara.. She winced, just thinking of it.  She'd known, of course, that something would happen.  She'd known that someone could be hurt - but she'd been unable to stop it.

Hadjara had almost died, and it had almost been her fault.  She clenched her jaw, narrowing her gaze seemingly on the sight before her, though really it was at the memory of her failure.  She'd nearly lost Hadjara.  It would not happen again.

But she couldn't let Hadjara know she was hovering, either.. The female dealt with enough hovering from Lucky and her mate.  No.. she'd have to be more subtle.  Her eyes slid over the handsome males.. and then she smiled.

Yes.. a few webs might do.  Something to help her keep an eye on Hadjara.. and not let Hadjara know about them at all.  Yes.  That was perfect.  Let Lucky and Babak thump their chests and act like the Protectors they thought themselves.. Let them claim the glory.

She would make sure Hadjara was never, ever, hurt again.

Petitions (if any):
I would like to keep her Advanced Craft Specialty, as it was bought and applied from a Thanksgiving shop by Caryn and is important to the character.
