Richard Marko

    The Basics

    Character Name: Richard Marko
    Nicknames: Ryder
Age and Birth Year: 50 (Born 144 PP)
    Race: Half-Long Lived
    Caste: Warlord
    Birth Territory: Little Terreille, Kaeleer
    Home Territory: Little Terreille, Kaeleer

    Birthright Jewel: Uncut Tiger Eye
    Offering Jewel: Uncut Summer Sky

    Role:
    Faction: The Black Claw

    Appearance

    Play By: Leon Chiro
    Distinguishing Features:
Marko is a big guy. He stands at 6’6” and is built like a house. He bears a number of scars and the wear of a hard life of former drug addiction and rough and tumble of life on the street. He bears the golden eyes and dark hair of his mixed heritage.

    Personality

    Personality:
Marko’s a big loveable guy on the surface. He laughs often. He jokes. He’s friendly. He’s warm. He’s the best drinking buddy you’ll ever have and he’ll knock the teeth out of the asshole who puts their hands on your girl. He is a good son to his parents and has consistently gone out of the way to help them. He’ll be the first guy to buy your kid a stuffed doll or help you move if you need a hand. To a Lady he is the perfect gentleman, kind and polite in his own non-aristo way. He does his very best to put on the face of a big loveable teddy bear.

    But Marko’s also an asshole.

When it comes to people he doesn’t know, Marko’s fine with selling you down the river for a quick buck. If Marko doesn’t know you, he won’t think twice about walking across your dead body in the street. He won’t shy away from violence to get something, won’t regret beating the shit out of some snotty little aristo, and he doesn’t mind breaking rules to get something done.

With no real family he prioritizes the friends he has, but his loyalty isn’t ironclad. While he won’t seek to kill his friends, he’s not above a little betrayal for money or getting something if it doesn’t seriously harm said friends.

Marko’s a womanizer, a brawler, and a bravo. He talks a big game and isn’t afraid to back it up. He thinks might makes right and if you get in the way of a hammer you deserve what you get. He doesn’t believe in Mother Night, a higher power, or karma. He thinks that the world is made out of those who fuck or get fucked, and he plans on doing the fucking.

    Likes:
    • Beer: Marko doesn’t just like beer, he loves beer. Be they Sceltic darks, heartier brews from Dharo, bitters from Little Terreille, or that fru-fru stuff from Dhemlan he drinks a wide arrange of beers. He has at least one in the morning, and at least one before he sleeps.

    • Nicknames: Marko has a nickname for everyone and everything. Sometimes to the point of annoyance.

    • Jonny Boy: ‘Ol Jon’s probably the best friend Marko has. Jon literally saved Marko’s life and gave him a job. Jon’s paid him well and he’s a fun person to drink with, scrap with, or play cards with. He’d do just about anything Jon asked him to do; as long as Jon paid him a fair wage, of course.
    Dislikes:
    • Marchesa: Yeah, he takes Marchesa’s money. Yeah, he likes her money enough to not exactly be loyal to Jon. But in the end, Marko thinks the dusty old bag could die off tomorrow and the world would be a better place. Her self-centered uppity garbage really annoys him so he tries to make their transactions as quick as possible.

    • People calling him “Dick”: Do you want to get punched in the face? Cause calling Marko ‘Dick’ is a quick way to get punched in the face.

    • Glacians: Jonny Boy is just about the only exception. Almost every other Glacian Marko deals with he thinks is a dick. They’re a cold, prickish people who are the definition of arrogance and the qualities Marko would rather get away from. If only they didn’t pay so good...
    Fears:
    • Getting found out: In the back of his head, Marko knows that he’s playing a dangerous game. Playing both sides of a con can turn out messy and even worse when you’re messing with people who are on the scarier spectrum of the Blood. Marchesa would throw a collar on him or melt his brain, and Marko has seen Jon kill people and know it’s a bad end. While the allure of the profits has kept him in the scam, he still treads lightly.

    • Becoming poor: Marko was poor for most of his life. It’s only in the last ten years or so, working with Jon and then on his own that he’s finally had a very comfortable income. It’s part of the reason that he’s taken on more and more risks, as he wants to stay in that comfortable lifestyle.

    • Getting on the wrong side of Glacia: While Marko doesn’t feel any specific sympathy for the poor bastards he hands back to the Glacians, he is cognisant that he’s in the wrong category as far as Glacians are concerned. He knows that sooner or later one of them is going to try and slap a collar around his neck. He just has to be smart enough to not let it happen.
    Craft Strengths:
    • Managing Collars of Obedience: Marko’s range of control on the collars and rings of obedience is much longer than the typical person making use of the Control Ring.

    • Deception Craft: Marko’s lies tend to be much more effective; the minds of those he talks to twisting to make it sound like logical conclusions or reasonable requests. His use of this Craft is much more subtle than the average Blood user.
    Craft Weaknesses:
    • Compulsions: Ugh, if only he was good at this he wouldn’t have to zap so many Light Jeweled Glacians. Or lie. Or punch people in the face. It’d save him so much effort.

    • Power Bolts: If Marko has to hit someone he wants to hit them, not laser them like a little bitch.
    Life Story

    Family:
Foster Mother: Kara Marko (Jeweless Blood) Born 118 PP
Foster Father: Cain Marko (Jeweless Blood) Born 120 PP
Foster Sibling: Charles Marko (Jeweless Blood) Born 151 PP

    History:
Richard Marko doesn't know his actual parents. He was left on the door of a teacher and a Hell Lord in Goth. Raised in a life paid for by altruism and crime in turn, Richard came to see that the world was more shades of gray than it was black and white. His parents were Jeweless Blood, having more power than most of the Landen who lived around them but not able to separate themselves from the millions of other people that lived in Goth.

Marko’s youth was a somewhat rough and tumble one. His parents didn’t have a great deal of money so the boy often would steal or rough up other children to take what he wanted. A bit of a bully, his mother was often at her wits’ end trying to keep him in line and not let himself get in trouble. Much of Marko’s attitude changed after his Birthright Ceremony where he was blessed enough to receive a Tiger Eye Jewel. It was seen as a source of great celebration for his family and his neighborhood, as many of the families were either Landen or had no Jeweled Blood of their own.

Shortly after Marko received his Tiger Eye his brother, Charles, was born. Again this put a slight change in his perspective as he now had someone to watch over. He grew into a large young man who became less of a bully and more of a jokester. Given his size and strength he could have easily fallen into a trope of physical abuser, but he found that jokes and levity were better tools in most cases. Laughing helped reduce the anxieties of being poor and having family that he felt protective of better than beating up on some poor sap. As he grew up he followed his father into working with the Hell Lords, but the brutality of that particular organization was something he found distasteful and he separated himself from it as soon as he was able.

When Marko received his Summer Sky he became part of a fighting ring that would exhibit in bars and small arenas in Goth. He made a fair share of money in the rings and for the first time in his life he wasn’t scraping by. For a few years he received some minor fame and fortune in the ring and would both support his parents who were growing older and also keep himself in a comfortable lifestyle. He got badly injured during one fight where he was soundly beaten when he was around 37, a sign he was getting too old for his particular chosen arena.

While he was recovering his funds dwindled and he was at a loss of what to do, given that no-one wanted to sponsor him after his loss. He considered going back to the Hell Lords, if only because they had tried to (nicely) recruit him a couple times. Jonothan Harmaa found him instead.

A mutual friend of theirs told Jon about Marko’s size, his temperament, and his prowess. Jon offered Marko a job in his organization, and offered far more money than the Hell Lords ever would. The two became fast friends, as Jon’s easygoing charm and his ability to turn a profit made him someone Marko could rely on and trust. While Marko was no idiot, he also recognized that Jon was far more cunning than he was, and he tried his best to learn from the Glacian Warlord who seemed interested in making a great deal of money smuggling Glacians into Little Terreille, as well as trafficking goods back into the frozen Territory.

For nine years Marko became one of Jon’s principal agents in Little Terreille. He would find jobs and homes for the Glacians that were brought into Little T by the other members of the Black Claw, he would protect them from the Gangs of Goth (for a fee, of course), and he would help bring them into and out of Nharkava alongside goods Jon wanted brought in from the Dark Gate. And for a long time, that was enough. He was making good money, he didn’t have to work too hard, and he was working with and for someone he trusted.

That changed sharply when his parents both took ill in the Winter of 190. Though Marko had a comfortable lifestyle, he couldn’t afford the constant Healer visits out of Goth, and he lacked the Court connections to get in good with some of the best Healers in the Territory. Too proud to ask Jon for more money (as he felt he owed the man a great deal already), he was starting to grow desperate. Marchesa Talbot, the Queen of Courtland, found him when he was hitting a new low.

Marchesa had become aware of Marko and some of Jon’s Black Claw bringing Glacians into her Province. Bride had ignored her calls to expunge the Glacian immigrants and Logain seemed content to simply make money off of them. The Province Queen couldn’t just get rid of them all, but she believed she could both thin the population as well as make more profits for her Province. She offered Marko a deal too good to pass up: Kidnap Glacian refugees and sell them back to Glacia, and in return Marchesa would have her own Court Healer care for Marko’s parents and give him a portion of each sale. The money that she offered far outstripped the funds Jon had ever paid him, and though he wanted to be loyal to his friend, loyalty to family (and greed) overcame.

For the last two years Marko has covertly continued this double operation: Helping Jon smuggle Glacians into Little Terreille and then selling some of them back to Glacia. Up until now Jon was too busy with his own work in Glacia to notice. But now that Jon has roosted in Little Terreille and has a Black Jewel backing him, making him the Steward of the whole Territory, Marko is in an unenviable position.

Eventually Jon will find out what he’s been up to, and Marko’s afraid of what the fallout of that is going to be. He’s going to have to figure something out quick.

Because if he doesn’t, he’ll be dead.

    Character in Play:
“Hey Mack.” Marko offered the slim bald man a smile as he entered the bar they came to every Friday night to share drinks, onion rings, and cards. Mack had been a friend for nearly ten years, ever since Marko joined the Black Claw, and the two often worked as a team to muscle over Hell Lords, Gatekeepers, or whoever else wanted to pick on their clients. “You look spooked.”

Mack was shaking when he sat down across from Marko, his hands trembling as sweat seemed to form a sheen on his forehead. “Just came from the South End. Hell Lords are gone.”

Gone? Marko was a little taken back by that. ”Gone. What do you mean?”

“As in gone. As in Jon just came down there and started killing them. Walked right up with a sword and started hacking them to pieces. The whole fuckin street was covering in ice, Marko. And then Lord Black showed up. Man made out of fuckin shadow he was, and blew the building up that was their main distro center.”

Marko’s stomach dropped out a bit. Normally Jon doing a bit of violence wouldn’t bother him. But there was a difference between killing one guy who was being a consistent pain in the ass and getting rid of the Hell Lords entirely. His mind raced back to the conversation the two had shared when Jon first arrived in Little Terreille and made it clear he was staying here.

The people that get in my way are going to have short life expectancies, Marko.

Marko had thought that,t to a degree, that was just some talk. Glacians got off on sounding hardcore, and as much as Jon acted different from the usual cold stiff, he was still one of the blonde bastards. But the thought of him going in and taking on the strongest and most ruthless gang in Goth head on was crazy. The fact that he won was crazier. It hadn’t even been Lord Black showing up and leveling the place. Mack said Jon did it himself.

He had wanted to stop working for Marchesa, and when he’d said it she had told him she’d let Jon know that Marko had betrayed him. I wonder how your friend deals with traitors, Marko.

His stomach sank, and sank, and sank. ”Well…” He forced a smile he didn’t feel and turned to Mack, laying a heavy hand on his shoulder. ”Ain’t that some shit! Sounds like cause of a celebration! Anna! Two extra for me and Mack! We got a lot to celebrate!”

His smile covered his terror so completely it was as if the two were one in the same.
