Appearance

Distinguishing Features:
Raild is tall, even for a Falkirk man.

Raild has a military bearing, and his finely trained body moves with a powerful grace. Despite his strength, it is not his posture or build people remember. He radiates the coiled tension of the Dark Jewel-ed predator he is. He rarely makes any effort to lessen this impact.

He has striking, pain filled eyes.

Spoiler:  Detailed Description (click to show/hide)
Personality

Personality:
Raild is the man entrusted with training the men and women of the Court with physical self-defense. As such, he works closely with the Bow Master, Master of Horse, and the Master of the Guard. He is a man keenly aware that a failure on his part will cost the lives of people he loves. He carries a burden of guilt for every student lost. His eyes hold a piercing pain that is sufficient to motivate most of his students.

Raild holds himself apart from his Clan and Court, needing to maintain emotional distance in order to do his job. This is slowly hardening him, killing him from the inside out. While every Blood struggles with anger, the poisonous rage that is killing him is entirely focused on himself.

He holds a position of great influence in the Court. He is the disciplinarian, the one who is most likely to hold a person accountable for their actions, or nip mischief in the bud. He is especially harsh with Yseult, fearing her ability to breach the walls of isolation around himself.

He is a man who rarely speaks of personal issues, preferring to keep interactions focused on fighting, or defense. He is capable of great subtlety, from arcane lessons with his students to thinking four or five moves ahead on the battlefield. This means his rare gestures of friendship and affection are often missed by the intended recipients.

Raild's Queen will have to be able to juggle both his intense need to connect, and his need for distance. Mishandling Raild would end in violence. Her willingness to risk anything to save her people will win his loyalty, make the price he pays worth it. She will need to prevent him from sliding all the way from sane, to psychopath, not an easy or safe thing to do.

Likes:
  • 1 Physical Perfection. Any physical task perfectly done pleases him, from sculpture to cliff diving. But a breathtakingly well performed combat maneuver brings moments of rare joy and peace, especially when it is a student who has demonstrated such mastery.
  • 2 Order. He likes schedules and an organized living environment precisely because combat is so chaotic. As long as everyone is on time, and everything is in it's place, he knows his family is safe. When anything is out of place, it puts him on edge. No matter where the disorder is, he has a tendency to correct it. He isn't interested in hearing how he shouldn't interfere with another person's possessions or place; he is driven to fix it.
  • 3 Combat Craft. His particular art and passion is to combine traditional physical combat with traditional Craft Combat. He loves combining them into a seamless whole, and hopes one day to have an entire branch of the martial arts named after him. It is his bid for legacy: The Falkirk Fighting Style. The perfection of this fighting technique is much more to him than a hobby or a job. He spends the majority of both his free time and professional time engaged in this pursuit, regretting if not actually resenting distractions from it.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Loosing Students. While any combat trainer suffers from this from time to time, Raild cannot let it go. He has nightmares, and sometimes flashbacks surrounding the loss of his students. He is driven to perfect his students, to let no weakness go by unchallenged. He is constantly testing, even when not in the salle or officially working. This severely limits his ability to engage in friendships, and feeds his intense isolation.
  • 2 Needing Touch. Raild craves touch, needs the human connection and reassurance, to the point that he perceives it as both a weakness and betraying his students. He eschews most physical contact and hates the craving this leaves within him. He often confuses the need for non-sexual touch, for belonging and acceptance, with the much simpler and still quite strong need for sex. As a result, he tends to frequent Red Moon Houses rather than risking sex with the same woman twice. He keeps his Ruts far, far away from friends and family.
  • 3 Mass Combat. Death should be personal. The person who kills, should have to look their victim in the eyes. Each death, justified or unnecessary, cool calculation or raging vengeance leaves its mark clawed into the soul. Vast Witchstorms, large military maneuvers, mass slaughters all leave Raild empty. They are sometimes necessary, and he accepts that, but he still hates them.

    Fears:
  • 1 Breaking a student. Part of his job is to run his students right to the edge of what they can endure without sliding over that edge and damaging Chalice or Jewel. He works very hard to avoid crossing over that line, but he knows that someday he will. His very need to perfect them, risks breaking them.
  • 2 Loving. Love, even that of family and friends, let alone romantic love, distorts perception and adds incredible emotional weight to a nearly intolerable burden. He knows that the tenderness and compassion such love creates will cause him to either be too soft, or too hard on his students.
  • 3 The Killing Edge while teaching. Warlord-Princes are prone not merely to rage, but to an unnatural aggression and the occasional need to kill. Raild is intimately familiar with the Killing Edge, often courting its siren song. In battle, it is a friend and a true release, allowing him to air without restraint or hesitation. But when teaching, it is a constant threat. He fears some idiot student pushing him just that far during training, and the bloodbath that will result.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Combat Craft. Raild has intensively studied combat Craft, and teaches it. He does not heavily emphasize power bolts and triage healing, although he teaches them; his specialty focuses on Physical enhancement, from increasing strength or dexterity to adding keenness to a blade or hitting an impossibly difficult target. Obviously, finishing moves and combat shielding are also integral, if to a lesser degree.
  • 2 Jewel Management. Teaching as he does, he has learned to squeeze every last ounce of power from his jewels, and is able to be more efficient with Craft, using less energy. He uses his Craft as regularly as any Healer, and his push towards perfection causes him to wish to use precisely the correct amount of energy. He is also skilled at doing more than one thing at once, needing to regularly Shield his students with his Sapphire, so they can practice against each other at full strength.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Intricate Craft. Raild has never been interested in the more esoteric aspects of Craft. He likes things with direct, physical effects. Most Intricate Craft is beyond him, particularly Memory Crystals; he would like to learn to make then, to preserve his art, but has so far failed to do so. He is incredibly private, and has especially avoided learning Breaking inner Barriers, Compulsions or Mind Delving. These three make him shudder; he has never and will never learn them.
  • 2 Timed Craft. Set Spells and long duration spells are likewise of no interest to him, but it does bother him that he has never mastered Death Spells. When he does his killing, it is with his hands or his weapons. To truly excel at his art, he will need to either overcome this lack, or find a student with a gift in this area to perfect the Falkirk Fighting Style. Right now, he searches for that perfect student.

    History:

    Spoiler:  Timeline (click to show/hide)
Raild was born precisely on time, as was expected from such an orderly and well-run household. His parents are one of the great love stories in the Clan, brought together by their shared love of creating Craft enhanced items. They have never been away from the Highlands, learning all they needed from old scrolls, books and legends, as well as the ancient sword-smith who apprenticed them both.

From a young age, Raild appreciated the need to perfect anything he studied. His parents had to do flawless work, or people died. Consequences that usually exceed the grasp of a young child were crystal clear to him. This made his relationship with others difficult; between his perfectionism and Warlord-Prince Caste, he made few friends, and those he did befriend were universally older than him.

He was only five when his sister was born, but she did not live up to expectations. First, she was late. Second, by the time she was one she had developed a Healer Caste. The family had been planning on training her to be a Priestess.

    He never quite forgave her.

Raild's Birthright Ceremony changed his life profoundly. He was gifted with an Opal. He was no longer allowed to skimp on his Craft training in favor of perfecting his martial training. The only way that they got the strong-minded perfectionist to practice Craft, was to combine it with his physical training, whether it was creating Witch-light while running or or performing Fine Manipulation while working out.

From that point on, he pushed himself even harder.

The birth of two Queens to his Clan honed his protective instincts to a fine edge. And his temper grew to a formidable thing, isolating him further. This proved an advantage for a young man in a war-torn Clan, but also gave him the focused honesty to be a merciless task master. He began to be asked to assist in training bouts and drills.

Raild's offering resulted in a descent to the Sapphire. Now the call of the Abyss was even stronger, his temper more hair trigger. Only iron-clad rules of Protocol kept him from true atrocities that first year, but his new strength and deep standing in the Abyss had him training directly with Ian Malcolm Falkirk, the Clan Laird. He found new purpose, and a whole new level of control. He formed a rare and deep friendship with Ian.

The Clan Blood feud shaped the young man profoundly, putting many of those he trained with at risk, killing the old Armsmaster, and Breaking his Healer sister. It was during this chaotic time that he became the Master of Blades. Though he lacked the diversity to aspire to Armsmaster, there are none within his Clan and few warriors at all who can match Raild's skill with bladed weapons, and fewer even yet who can match him with his chosen weapon, the broadsword.

His greatest trial as the Master of Blades surrounded training the two young Queens. Every fiber of his Warlord-Prince nature wanted to shield them. The very nature of combat training forbids this. In addition, after the death of Yseult's mother, he has felt a decided partiality for the little Queen. Her Emotional Healing and Queen's Touch made him acutely aware of what he was lacking, and resulted in a harsh, distant manner with her.

The necessity of performing Yseult's Virgin Night shattered the careful distance he had kept between them. They are occasionally lovers, but only on the exceedingly rare moments when they are accorded privacy. He finds it highly amusing that both of Yseult's Bonded males subtly oppose her sharing his bed.

The brutal apparent end to the Killan / Sheane war has caught Raild off guard. He doesn't believe it is over. He knows Highlanders, and their stubborn lust for vengeance. He cannot imagine any Scelt without a generous helping of rage; the Sheane Clan won't sit down and die. The Falkirks wouldn't.

He is painfully aware of his Clansmen's new, subtly enhanced wariness of the strongest Jewels in the Clan, drawing him closer to Ian as they both struggle to demonstrate that a deep standing in the Abyss doesn't mean disaster for the Clan.

Raild stood still, the cadence of his breathing matched to his heartbeat. Sweat ran in rivulets down his bare shoulders and back. He had reached that perfect state where he was attending to everything, and nothing. He was totally focused, yet aware of the faint change in air currents.

His Sapphire blazed in isolated glory on his chest, sending the rich, deep blue light to every corner of the salle, bouncing off of mirrors and creating shadowy images throughout the room. He waited until the precise moment his students entered the salle, and blinded them with a brilliant cascade of Opal.

It wasn't fair. But then, life rarely was, and someone trying to kill you never was.

"Hey! That hurt ..." Padean's voice was aggrieved, but at least he didn't whine; and if it hurt, good. His habit of waiting to shield until practice actually began would be fatal once he was fighting real opponents.

The whining, irritating snivel of, "No fair! We're working footwork only today!" came from Conlead, Padean's best friend, musical accompanist and limp-wristed fool. All the culture in the world wasn't going to help if these two consistently refused to learn.

So Raild spun a Sight Shield and an Aural Shield, vanishing from sight. His voice echoed from every corner of the room, changing in pitch and volume randomly. "When denied your sight, use hearing, when denied your ears, use your Psychic senses."

Padean paused while fumbling for his sword, "How did you do that? That was cool ..."
Instead of throwing up a personal shield, he threw out a Psychic Thread designed to analyze what Raild had done.

Which meant that what Raild was going to do next was going to hurt.

Raild uncloaked, standing once more in the middle if his salle. He breathed slowly, evenly, subtly relaxing muscles tensed during the bout. He was ready, when the air currents announced his next duo of students.

Raild grinned fiercely at them, giving them a heartbeat to register Padean and Conlead, unconscious on the floor, before his Opal flared to life once more. He was certain these two, at least, would never again walk into a practice bout without shielding. For the first two ... he would have to wait and see.

Raild is ready for review!

I hope he is ready. 😊

He's reasonably short, anyway!

He's my first super scary sapphire so I tried to make him growly.
