Appearance

Play By: Cobie Smulders
Distinguishing Features: Dark hair surrounds a fair skinned-face.  it's eye catching, even in a place with as much diversity as Little Terreille.  What truly sets it apart, though, is the bright and piercing blue of her eyes.

Personality

Personality:
Odelle is loved by everyone in her province... or at least, that's the goal.  This isn't some shallow need for approval or popularity (the only people she needs approval from are the few that she truly relaxes around, and Laurel Gold) - this is a driving ambition to do what is best for her people.  She had made her home in Little Terreille, and for all of its faults (of which they are numerous) it is her HOME, and she wants it to be safe from those who would take it for the Gate that it guards.  She wants her parents safe.  She wants to keep her bonded safe.  She even wants to keep the landen safe from the cruelties of the world.
She is all too aware of the avarice that Glacia holds for territories that could give it an edge, or more of a shine... and what could be better for the spread of its cult than the only functioning Gate in Kaeleer?  No, the only way to ensure that Little Terreille doesn't simply fall before the might of the triple caste Star of Kaeleer is to ensure that they are strong enough to not be worth the effort.  Kaleva, her bonded, has told her tales of the 'kindness' of his homeland in their shackling of their lighter jewelled brethren.  How anyone could think that 'holy' strikes her as insane.
Protecting Little Terreille from this madness requires unity, which she stresses above almost all else.
People assume that she wants these things out of the goodness of her heart, and she allows them to believe it because it isn't altogether untrue.  She's not a monster, she has compassion and kindness to spare... she also has a ruthless streak and ultimately, she is goal-oriented.  She runs many charitable events with the ultimate goal of teaching her people to better themselves, and thus not rely on ANYONE.  If her people rely on no one, then she can better focus on protecting the territory in her own way.
She'll also kill for it, and has.  No one will ever find Hyster Megdalene, she's sure of it.  That woman fled during the chaos.  Her chosen inheritor though...  Odelle drew the blade across the woman's throat herself, and she saw to the disposal of the body.  If that farmer noticed his pigs were fatter than usual, he would likely chalk it up to the generous donation of feed from the new Queen.
A Queen is meant to be a steward for the land...  There is nothing she would not do to protect her new home, her bondmates, and her family - even if the acts require staining her soul.

Likes:
  • 1.  Deeds, not Bloodlines - Who you are born to, your status as Landen or Blood... these things don't really matter.  The Darkness judges who we are based on what we do, not who we were born as.  Those who attempt great things or to fulfill their ideals to the betterment of province and territory she will cherish and raise up above others regardless of station of birth or jewel ranks.  Even if the actions of a person put them at odds with her politically, she holds great respect for those willing to put their nose to the grindstone.
  • 2.  Efficient Compassion - Charity and kindness are grand ideals and should be exercised often - but they they should be done efficiently.  Merely throwing money at the poor does nothing to help them AVOID being poor.  It is better to use that money to instead find those people jobs so that they can feed themselves.  She prefers to use kindness and charity to TEACH, not just to quiet the din of discontent.  There is a joy gained in teaching the ill educated to read, and a satisfaction unmatched in watching the once homeless gain their first crop or livestock.  The idea that those she helps will not need assistance after she is gone is a thrilling one.
  • 3.  Music - Music is the great equalizer of all the world.  Landen or Blood can both hear a piece and be soothed.  Music is universal, and she truly believes that those gifted in music should be treasured as the rare creatures they are.  When she is alone with her males, she has been known to sing to them while they all work on their individual projects for the territory.
Dislikes:
  • 1.  Messes - Both the literal and the figurative.  Whether it's a body on the floor or a political knot needing to be untied, Odelle finds avoidable messes infuriating.  Obviously life throws curveballs, but that doesn't mean we have to ACCEPT messy situations and not fix the problems.
  • 2.  Unreasonable Prejudice - There have been some Blood that cannot stand Landen... and despite her obvious care about merits rather than bloodlines, she has accepted these individuals and worked with them without any problems.  Mostly because those individuals hated landen because of landen uprisings that killed their loved ones.  While she feels their emotions are regrettable, they at least make sense.  Those who hate a particular type of person for a reason not based in experience drive her up the wall.  She rarely tolerates these individuals long without a good reason.
  • 3.  Wines - What is it about wines?  Why does everyone rant and rave about this vintage or that vintage or which wine is best with what dish?  This truly is the part she hates most about politics - a choice made poorly in wine selection can put her at a disadvantage during a party, and she hates wines.  She tends to rely on someone more knowledgeable for such things, and lets the chips fall where they may.  She's willing to do and learn many things to ensure her territory does well.. but she's not willing to swallow sour vinegar.
Fears:
  • 1.  Glacia -  There is something... disturbing about Glacia and their Dark Religion.  She has a problem with people dismissing the landen... how in the Hells could anyone expect her to swallow the idea that light jewelled are somehow 'wrong' in their existence?  There is little that can immediately move her to agree with Warlord Princes in their lust for violence... but the hint of Glacian interference in Little Terreille would be enough to do so.
  • 2.  Small Spaces -  There was an accident, when she was younger.  She was only trapped for a few hours, and she'd only gotten a few scrapes... but the incident left its mark.  The dark doesn't bother her, but being trapped in a small space will send her heart climbing into her throat.  This occasionally rears its head when she's being crowded, even by her males.
  • 3.  Dark Jewelled Widows -  Black widows are... concerning in and of themselves.  A dark jewelled black widow, on the other hand, makes her skin crawl.  The cunning of a widow is legendary, and the idea of a dark Widow setting her in the crosshairs as it were is enough to make her be a bit paranoid.  The last thing she wants is some widow laying a compulsion on her... and her not being able to do anything about it.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Emotional Manipulation - Why terrify people into listening to you when you can ensure that they love you and will do what you need out of sheer loyalty?  From the first time she'd maneuvered a few street hoodlums in Dharo into protecting her mother rather than robbing her mother blind, she has worked tirelessly at this particular talent.
  • 2.  Queen's Gift - Some might think that Rockland would not be suitable for someone with her gift... she would argue that it is the best place for someone like her.  So much of the land is obviously unsuitable for farming - but what land IS suitable will only prosper under her touch.  Every parcel of land she has gifted has born food that is better, stronger, and more durable in the climate from whence it is grown.  In turn, the many animals that are fed from the crops and wild flora of Rockland do much better now than they did under the weak Hyster.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Power Bolts - it takes twice the energy to accomplish a typical bolt, and it wears her thin quickly.  If Odelle ever casts a bolt, then she is likely in a situation that is life and death... as she would never tax herself so inefficiently without a damned good reason.
  • 2.  Queen's Touch -  It burns her, truly it does, to realize that her males will not gain as much from her touch as they would from a Queen not so deficient in this skill.  AS much as she makes people love her, as hard as she tries... her touch should come without quite so much effort.  But for some reason, it takes more effort on her part to bring peace to those she Touches than it should.

History:
The first few years of her life were spend in Dharo, and she had no reason to suspect that they would ever go anywhere else.  Her parents raised her, but she lived so close to a village queen that it didn't matter whatsoever as far as her initial training went.  Truthfully, she would have been more than content to grow up and rule a small village in Dharo.

But her parents were.. uneasy with the politics of the situation.  She learned after they moved that her father was Cymrean, and her mother was Dharoan.  She knew her history, she knew it was unusual... but she didn't realize this meant that people would see her as a Cymrean queen, for better or worse.

Her parents took her to Little Terreille, to one of the more rural sections of the territory where they might feel slightly more at home.  She fit in well enough with the other queens in the area, and she showed a knack for feeding the land.  Life was good.

She devoured books on various economics and politics, intent on learning how to best serve the land and the people upon it.  She was just as likely to ask the local landen about their farming and how it was going as she was to ask the Queens how they felt the land was doing.  She learned early on that the landen's opinions were often ignored, and really shouldn't be.  Who would know better whether the land was working to put food on a table than the people without Craft to assist them in their lives?

Unlike many Blood, she never really had any fear amongst the landen.  She was a child who was extremely easy to love and that charisma continued throughout her life.  When she fell into a well and screamed herself hoarse it was a landen farmer and his family that rescued her.  The wife of the farmer had cleaned her up and put her in clean clothes while they awaited someone from the local court to come fetch her... and she was gently admonished by the landen woman about how dangerous it was to go wandering around on her own at her age.   The landen, she learned, were people just like her family.  The only difference was that they had no Craft to assist them... and she began to more keenly understand why the Blood were meant to watch over the landen.

That was also when she first met Jack Bolton, a young warlord tagging along with his uncle as the elder man fetched her from the landen household.  Their bond was instant, and a source of stress for her poor father.  Jack made her laugh, and would constantly come to her home to just be near her.  Her father ensured they were never left alone, at least, not until her Virgin Night -  a night that both herself and Jack insisted be performed by him.  Despite the obvious affection, Jack never expected her to only seek his bed.  But he did always insist on meeting the males she might take to her own in order to make sure her judgement was sound.

From that moment on, she dedicated herself to really learning how to RULE, and not just administer.  Her room was often filled with notes and books on legal systems, currencies, economic policies.  Her small journal would be filled with ideas of how she would make sure her own village treated all of its people correctly, regardless of status.  And Jack, bless his soul, understood her need to see to the welfare of all her people, including the landen.

That mindset about the landen never changed.  It was, in fact, solidified when she met Laurel Gold during a family trip to Portland.  The woman was startling, and it didn't take long at all after working up the courage to speak to her that she discovered a kindred spirit.  The trip was over too quickly, but she extracted a promise from the long-lived woman that she would arrange to meet again.

And that promise was kept.  Over the next few years, she and Laurel would exchange letters arranging long lunches where they could speak regarding economic theory and judicial jurisprudence regularly.  It was Laurel who helped her really learn what she meant to do with her life, and it was Laurel's carefully spoken views about the state of the world that made her realize just how dangerous the realms could be.

It also made her realize that the only way to fight such ruthlessness was to develop some ruthlessness of her own.

As she gathered her first three bonded males, and heard their tales of where they had come from and who they had been before she found them, she realized all too quickly that the world was far from fair and kind... and that to make Little Terreille what she wanted it to be she may have to sully her hands.

Kaleva Virtanen was her second bond, and his story made her heart bleed.  His tales of how Glacia was collaring their own people to 'protect' their lighter jewelled brethren burned her blood.  What 'protection' could such a device offer them when its very existence allowed for torture through the smallest touch of Craft?  What sort of twisted Queen would allow her people to be so harmed?  It was through Kaleva that she came to truly despise Glacia... and it was because of Kaleva that she didn't disagree with Bride's welcoming of the Glacian Refugees - though she would have been more subtle about it.

Kamal Kapoor was her last bond, and she often finds him the most... thrilling.  Unsettling, but thrilling.  His dark eyes miss nothing, and the aura of restrained violence surrounding the man raises her every instinct to soothe - while also making her feel an impish desire to prod him just a little.  Not that she ever does, really.  Kamal has been through quite enough, watching Glacia take lands in Nharkava from his cousins... all because of their lighter jewels.  He claims that they haven't yet begun collaring the lighter jewelled Nharkavans... but he came to Little Terreille so that he wouldnt' have to watch them begin to do so.

He and Kaleva are of the same mind on that.  Where Glacia treads, the collars are not far behind.  She has vowed to never allow such a fate to fall upon her males...

Her philosophy on the need for ruthlessness was vindicated.  Again, and again, and again.  From the stories of abuse that she would hear from Glacian refugees to the tales her males would tell her of things they had witnessed or experienced in their own homes.

When the court of Logain Morr was destroyed, the territory fell into chaos.   Odelle was of two minds about the entire situation.  On one hand, Logain had a good sense for running things - even if she very much disagreed with many of his policies.  On the other... he had collared a citizen of Little Terreille... their territory queen, no less!  Such a sin is unforgiveable in her mind, and if she'd had any idea how to do so she'd have seen him dead for it.  The very thought of anyone, much less a male she trusted, slipping one of those torture devices about her throat is both terrifying and infuriating.

The ruthlessness of the gangs in Goth began to be even less easily ignored.  Her friends and contacts within the city reported of outrageous violence - some of them stopped reporting at all.  She could only assume the violence had caught them in its fury.  Her province queen disappeared... and her own district queen was making noises about taking the reigns in order to try to make something of the situation.  She had quietly followed the Lady Bethany from a distance; waiting and watching.  She knew this Queen, and this Queen would be terrible for Rockland.  She couldn't allow it... and she couldn't allow her males to take care of this for her either.  They would never forgive themselves for what was necessary.

It was when the Queen was in the garden the night before she was to make her announcement that Odelle came up behind her, shielded so tightly that the lighter jewelled Queen would have no chance to feel her coming.  She drew a blade against the queen's throat, holding her tightly as her life bled onto the ground below them.  she didn't move until the body stopped twitching... and then she quickly got to work cutting through the limbs in order to make it easier to package the body.  She knew of a few pig farms not far from Eastville... and she used them.  Bits of the would-be queen fed the beasts at three different farms.

A week later, it was Odelle Ackley who stepped into control in Eastville and began to clean up the messes that the dysfunctional chaos had created.  Her calm and orderly methods ensured that people took a breath... and all too soon, the familiar swelling of loyalty began to pour in.

Eastville was hers.  Now it was time to turn her attention to the outlying villages.  From there?  The territory.

Character in Play:

"There is still no sign of Lady Hyster."
She continued looking over the various papers, the many accounts.  Rockland was not Portland... she hadn't nearly as complicated a province as the Lady Laurel Gold... but it was in a bit of a mess considering the chaos of the last few months.

Hyster's doing, as much as the chaos of the ... disruption.  Hyster had been a lovely woman, kind and caring and good with her people... but she'd had no head for numbers.  Odelle took a moment to remember the woman's kindly laugh, her smile... and then cleared her throat.

Her eyes rose, studying the steward for a moment.  "Well, we must keep an eye out for her.  A missing queen is good for no one.  What of the rest of the court?"

"Nothing, my lady."  The steward sounded fairly upset about that.

She sighed, rubbing her fingers over her lips.  She'd hoped that some of them, at least, would return to work.  But it seemed that was not meant to be.  The news wasn't entirely unexpected, but she'd still hoped for more.  This meant she'd have the Steward at least... which was better than having to fill EVERY slot on her own.

"Very well... I expect a list of names that you would recommend to fill the court, as well as a dossier on each.  And Javin?"  She turned her eyes up, studying the elder male's face before rising from the desk to approach and clasp his hands.  "I cannot thank you enough for helping me sort the chaos."

The faint flush of embarrassment on his face was enough to brighten her smile, and have her letting loose a soft laugh.  "Truly, I couldn't do it without you.  Oh, one more thing... I want one of the local landen farmers for my third circle."

"The ... landen, m'lady?"
"Yes.  This is their home too.  Who better to help me ensure they are taken care of than one of their own?  I was thinking they could help me with agricultural needs.  The landen farm the land more often than the blood here... it makes sense to me."  She smiled, patting his face.  "Don't worry, Javin.  Everything will be fine."

Of course it would be fine.  She wouldn't allow it to be anything else.  Things were moving as she'd planned.  Out of the chaos, the resplendent valor of the Rocklanders would be an example for the rest of the Territory.  Her eyes turned to the window.  She was going to honor the lessons that the Lady Gold had taught her.

Glacia and its precious Star would not find her territory an easy thing to swallow.  And if they tried it, she'd make sure they choked on their attempt.  But that would require the loyalty of the people. All of the people.

It was just a shame that the missing Lady Bethany hadn't seen such simple truths.  She winced, thinking about it.  She wasn't happy that the female had died... but there was no denying that Bethany would have been a disaster.  One that Rockland simply could not afford.

She took a deep breath, smoothing out the front of her gown before turning to face the desk of reports again.  "Alright... to more important matters.  Javin, let's go over the reports from the livestock.  I think that the farmers have been getting fleeced by one of our friends in Goth.  They should have received at least half as much on that last flock."

And if anyone was ever caught cheating her people again... she'd make sure they paid a very public price for it.
