Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Naima stands deeply in the Abyss, with a keen awareness of that which makes her people Blood. She is saddened and angered when Blood don’t seem to appreciate that the Darkness is more to beg shiny rocks from twice in their lives. Naima grew up immersed in the mysteries of the Darkness herself and encouraged to spend as much time as she wanted in that Abyss. She can’t imagine life without touching it on a daily or hourly basis. It’s left an unmistakable mark on her nature. She is a tightrope walker who balances on the edge of the Abyss and the physical realm at all times. This requires a sharp wit, sharper focus and a keen awareness of her own boundaries. She is insatiably curious and not afraid to go out on a limb in the name of chasing down an idea.

Naima tries to embrace her culture’s teachings of serenity and patience in her own life, accepting the will of the Darkness even when events are not to her liking. She believes that there is a reason for everything, something to be learned, and there is always another turn of the wheel to get it right. She isn’t always successful in following those teachings, however. It’s more in her nature to dig in and show her teeth than to concede gracefully without a fight.

Naima has been rather sheltered in some ways; an inevitable byproduct of needing to be kept away from prying Glacian eyes who might take the young woman away to be educated in the “right” path. She knows her Protocol and has been taught Court manners, but has yet to get any practical experience with the latter. She relies on instinct and intuition to compensate for lack of experience in both Craft work and life.

The Priestess is accustomed to a measure of private meditation to center herself and commune with the Darkness, but she is on the whole a social creature. The whole point of being a Priestess, as she sees it, is to share Mother Night’s blessing with others and that requires interacting with them. Her humor tends toward the dry and sardonic- that when combined with the force of her personality and Jewels can be a bit overwhelming for people and put them off. But there’s no denying she has a certain dark charisma with those solid enough of will to stick around.

Naima is never careless with her body. Her dancer’s training and her otherworldly nature mean that any physical touch is bestowed with deliberate intent. It does not mean that she lacks the sensuality of the Blood. To the contrary, many rituals and communing with the Darkness inspire such a rush of feeling and euphoria that once bereft of the experience, she must purge that sensation with the physical vessel remaining to her lest she be overwhelmed. But even in this, sex is more spirituality then seduction for her; a holy experience in itself.

Likes:
  • Dance-Dance is the vehicle through which Nharavan Priestesses conduct most of their rituals and general worship, so the act automatically carries pleasing connotations for Naima. She also enjoys the outlet for her passions and the physical exertion of the activity.
  • Participating in Ritual Craft- Wearing the Gray, Naima doesn’t get many opportunities to feel an equal to her Sisters instead of their superior. She loves the feeling of belonging to something greater than herself that a well-run Ritual can bring.
  • Quiet mornings- Naima loves getting up early enough enjoy a bit of solitary peace and then getting to see the world around her slowly wake up. It’s a little ritual she values ever more as she gets older; her personal reminder of the persistence of life and that every day is a new beginning.
Dislikes:
  • Moontimes- She hates the blood and the pain and the hideous vulnerability- she’s had people to watch her back over the years, but she’s no Queen to have a whole Court ready to fuss over and guard her. Between her Gray and the enhanced potency of her blood, moontimes carry for her a special agony that no healer’s brew has been able to do more than take the edge off of, particularly if she has not been able to expend her energy in worship prior to the ordeal.
  • Leading Ritual Craft- Because she wears the Gray, Naima has led Rituals in her time and no doubt will again. But she doesn’t like being the focus of all that will and energy and would rather be a voice among the chorus, for there she can safely lose herself in the beauty and holiness of it.
  • Arrogance- She’s seen what it’s done to good Blood, and no race is safe from this fatal flaw. All things are creations of Mother Night and should be respected as such.
Fears:
  • Any injury to her feet or legs-Dancing is her art, her life, her holy vocation. She fears any accident or deliberate maiming which would render her unable to do so.  Even with Healers available, there is no guarantee they’ll be able to fix what would ail her.
  • Mice- Filthy little creatures with scrabbly little claws that can climb anywhere and get into everything. Plus, they draw snakes- and Nharkava has some nasty ones for the unwary.
  • Alienation from her peers- Naima had stood apart from almost everyone but her eldest brother since her Birthright and at the Gray is almost unmatched in Nharkava. Between Jewel depth and the isolation of joining the Sekhalasi, Naima fears that she’ll run out of places and people who welcome her as one of their own. The knowledge that she’ll outlive the rest of her community only enhances this fear- sometimes imagining those long, lonely centuries stretching out before her scares Naima to death.
Craft Strengths:
  • Spiritual Communication and Binding- Naima is particularly sensitive to the presence of spirits and can bend an ability to commune with the Darkness into communing with Her avatars as well. She has had the natural ability trained and honed by one of the oldest sects of Nharkava.
  • Blood Magic- Though Naima communes with the Darkness regularly, her ability to share its influence directly with others and renew their Jewels is merely average. Her Communing most vividly manifests itself with a sizzling increase to the power in her own already Gray-potent blood. Rituals she conducts involving the shedding of blood tend to work faster, better and more efficiently for her than for most Priestesses. Those who partake of her blood in worship can indirect feel the Darkness through her and have their Jewels filled that way.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Connecting to the Darkness- Because she stands at such a deep level of the Abyss, Naima takes longer to summon up her full power than most Blood. This is perhaps also a subconscious check on the destructive potential of an extremely Dark-Jeweled Priestess- if it takes her longer to act, she has more time to think about if she really wants to take the action in question. If she needs to act quickly, it will almost always be with her Birthright instead of her Offering.
  • Ceremonial Craft- Though Naima knows how to run Birthright, Offering and marriage Ceremonies, the enhanced potency of her blood and Craft usually make her an uncomfortable choice at best for officiating Priestess unless the participants really want a kick in the teeth. Naima will decline to do these ceremonies for anyone wearing lighter than Opal and flat out refuses to do Birthrights at all out of concern for the children’s ability to handle exposure to her power.

    History:

Naima’s older half-sister once ruled the village she grew up in and its Landen neighbor. After the Purge broke her Jewels and bent her spirit, their Healer mother stepped up in her stead. So Naima was fortunate enough to grow up in a place that was spared the worst of the post-Purge Landen upsrisings out of respect for the broken Queen and the venerable Healer who’d been around long enough to see their grandparents from cradle to grave. The downside, of course, was that a mother doing her best to hold her corner of Nharkava together with a parody of a real Court was a mother who didn’t have a lot of time to cuddle her young daughter and kiss her hurts away.

Her oldest sister filled that gap, raising Naima as if the girl were her own daughter. She’d been broken back to Yellow in the Purge, but Veda was Naima’s first introduction to the mysteries of their shared caste. Veda taught her sister how to listen with her heart as well as her ears and to dance for the glory of Mother Night even before she had her Birthright. Veda herself conducted that ceremony and was the first to congratulate her on the rough Sapphire she was gifted.

Her training got more intense after that, and the adults in her life more worried. Dark Jewels were rare in ordinary times and more so after the Purge. Naima would have to be guided and protected and hopefully taught the wisdom to handle all that Dark power before the foolishness of youth could get her into trouble. Their worry turned out not to be unfounded. Their village began flooding unexpectedly when she was ten and it was Naima who discovered the source: a lost and bored river spirit. She wasn’t yet quite articulate enough to convince the spirit to go away, but the Priestess who’d been tracking it was. And that Priestess recognize raw and rare talent when she saw it. The Priestess talked to Veda and soon she was off to learn with the Sekhalasi. Her family encouraged the move, happy to have someone  else share the burden of trying to feed one of their Dark Jewels when the village, like most of Nharkava, felt the lack of powerful Queen’s blood to help with the harvests.

Glacia swept into the land when she was 12. Half the people she talked to spoke of them as saviors and the other half murmured darkly about everything having a price. Naima was at first too busy training to pay much attention. But gradually things began changing. The Sekhalasi became increasingly reclusive and, after being banned, withdrew almost completely from Nharkava at large. Even Naima’s visits home had to be painstakingly planned out and shielded. But the adults in her life generally made sure that all she had to worry about was her training and spending time with her family- and, as she came to maturity, the two biggest events of a young witch’s life.

It is an open, though strictly not discussed, secret among her home village that her brother Ganaraj handled her Virgin Night. They two were the Darkest in their mother’s domain and Sapphires hard to find in Nharkava at large outside of Glacian sympathizers. One-time incest was deemed better than risking her loss to Glacian indoctrination or bring broken on the wrong spear. The night was at least successful and Naima completed her descent to a respectable Gray soon after.

The six years after were much the same; gaining entrance to the Priestesshood as an equal and working her way up the ranks; honing her Craft; discouraging the few males brave or foolish enough to try and court her. She had a lifetime for that, if they survived the gathering storm poised to break upon Nharkava. More of Naima’s focus went to learning shielding and combat as unrest rose on all sides –blood, landen and glacian. She  wanted to be able to help make a difference as one of Nharkava’s Darkest Jewels, as little as one Priestess could do against the might of Glacia. She even began whispering in the ear of the High Priestess of her sect to try and convince her to share their greatest secret with the Territory, lest they see it wiped out forever.  But Naima didn’t get the chance to see if her plans would bear fruit.
The Territory, along with the rest of the Realm, had forgotten its silent sibling to the west. Unfortunately, it hadn’t forgotten them. One desperate Seeker quested as far as Nharkava only to decide Naima was exactly what Gale Galoneth had (geas and all) ordered.

    Character in Play:

Naima didn’t recall a time in her life when she’d been more angry, frustrated and worried than she felt right now. She’d argued that Agnishika was not ready. The girl had had the will, yes, and the talent. She’d had her Offering and to all appearances merited the chance to take her final test and join the Sekhalasi as an equal instead of a acolyte. But Agni had been a little too eager for her liking. Too in a hurry to prove herself and sloppy if not watched like a hawk. Naima herself had been guilty of that a time or two (never in Agni’s sight, Darkess forbid!) but she had the power and the experience to make up for a lack of perfect form- Agni had not.

One’s final test was intended to judge an acolyte against what she would face out in the real world when help from a Sister might not be readily available. The candidate was not expected to harness Rajendra Himself, but the senior Priestesses had captured one of the more hostile forest spirits who’d stolen a tiger’s body; Agni’s task had been to exorcise the spirit from the tiger and bind it to one of the stone vessels specially blessed and kept for the purpose. Not an insurmountable task if one was sufficiently prepared. But the girl had been careless and neglected her spells on the ritual circle meant to contain the spirit. Once it found a weakness, the spirit had shredded the circle and the young Priestess both. Flush with blood and power, it had broken containment by the officiating Priestesses entirely and killed or maimed any it found on its way out.

They’d driven it off, but now those of sufficient power and seniority now had to track down the malicious thing and finish the job that Agni had failed. Naima prowled forward in the growing dark, Craft lending sight to her eyes and silence to her feet as she scanned the jungle around her for signs of the heavy cat that it inhibited. She’d already been forced to leave behind the Sister of the Black Lotus who ought to accompany her (as any Priestess of the Sekhalasi who left their sect’s grounds), victim of a deep clawing to the gut. Mother Night willing, their sisters would find her in time.

Naima called in a pouch and dipped her fingers in the basil-and-lemongrass blend as she retreated to the Abyss and gathered the power of the Gray about her, and dabbed the herbs at her third and sixth chakras; those centers of energy responsible for awareness and power. The practice ought to enhance the spells already laid and boost her perceptions to help her find the beast before it killed anyone else. The Priestess waited long heartbeats, feeling achingly exposed in the wilderness, but finally her Gray thrummed with the fullness of her power and Naima cast her net wide. She listened with her heart, hyper-aware, for any disturbance to the carefully-woven blanket of power she’d cast as any hunter would listen for the springing of a trap.

There! Feeling a jarring note to the peace of the Abyss, the Priestess bolted after it, praying she wouldn’t be too late.
