Personality

Personality:
Maud is an outwardly cheery, eclectic, dottering middle-aged lady with a purse dog. On the inside, she is a deeply lonely woman who has outlived all those she cared about and is waiting with fear and anticipation for her life to end.

Considered a harmless eccentric by most, and fun to be around for short periods of time, Maud has a large circle of acquaintances but few real friends other than her dog. Yet her mind is not dim as some may believe. Instead, it is full of information gathered over centuries of reading the paperwork that goes through her hands as she files it away. She knows something about everyone and is a nosy busybody about it. She never technically discloses confidential information, of course, but she definitely uses it to her social advantage. An expert at the motherly guilt-trip, Maud’s long fingers are on the pulse of both Landen and Blood society in Chaillot and she likes it that way.

She tries to fill the void where real connections and friends should be with gossip and information, but it never really works. Too afraid to love genuinely again, she keeps trying the same old ways and they keep not accomplishing what she hopes. That is her greatest foolishness, for if her deep-seeded depression would probably be greatly improved if she had people to care for and about. Instead, Maud lives in lonelyness surrounded bythousands of superficial connections that are so much less than the sum of their parts.

She likes to believe herself a kindly older lady, and indeed will bake people cookies and bring casseroles to coworkers who just had a death or birth in the family (even though her cooking is TERRIBLE), but while she does do it out of genuine compassion, she definitely enjoys the added perk of people telling her all about their lives over tea as she asks them pointed questions they feel would be rude not to answer after Maud went out of her way to make them cookies.

Likes:
  • Cecil: There have been 61 Cecils in Maud’s life. Each new Bichon Frisé she has names Cecil, regardless of gender, and the only distinguishing feature between all of them is that she does get them new tags commissioned with the name in a different font. She celebrates the birthday of the first Cecil every year and throws the current one a birthday party, complete with cake.
  • Gossip: Knowing things about people is what brings her joy. Maud has worked file clerk jobs all over Chaillot as regimes rose and fell. She loves gleaning little bits of info from the documents that pass through her hands as well as from social contacts. She never uses this information for much of anything, but she likes the satisfaction of knowing it anyways.
  • Brandy: Maud enjoy a stiff drink in the evenings, and several at parties. She also enjoys appearing drunker than she is. Often when you catch her snoozing in a corner, her glass hanging from limp fingers, her snores are just faked. She’s actually listening to every word you say.
Dislikes:
  • Snobby Aristos: Maud comes from a family that once, a very long time ago, had prestige and power. It hasn’t for a very long time and her villa is crumbling to ruin, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t annoyed when aristos pretend she is somehow lesser just because most of her family’s money and influence is gone.
  • Cats: They bother Cecil, and they, therefore, bother her. Many people assume she is a crazy cat lady, but she is not. Filthy things. She does not want an animal that will bring her mice. Yuck!
  • People who make tea incorrectly: Maud makes a perfect cup of tea and when it is not done right gets more than a little upset. She might not show it, but she is judging you.
Fears:
  • Loss of her Villa: It might be crumbling to ruins and filled with useless junk, but it is her home and the foundation for her entire life. It connects her to her long-dead family and is her touchstone. Not to mention all her Cecil’s are buried there in neat rows.
  • Death: Maud is starting to feel her years and has begun to realize that her long life has an endpoint. She feels she has wasted most of it but also does not know how to break out of the patterns she is comfortable in.
  • Intimacy: She has not had a real, heart-to-heart talk with anyone for centuries. She chatters with hundreds of people but it’s never more than superficial gossip. Maud is very afraid of actually opening up because the size of her loneliness is so vast and so painful.
Craft Strengths:
  • Telekinesis: Very useful in filing. Despite only having Basic Craft, Maud has used this power to help her keep on top of her workload efficiently.
  • Witchfire: The better to heat water for tea with. One must always have a way to make tea.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Psychic Communication: She has never been very good at this and while she can receive threads, she cannot open them.
  • Vanishing and Conjuring: She’s never had the knack for this so just keeps everything stacked up in teetering piles in her crumbling villa.

History:

Regimes have come and gone, but Maud has always handled the paperwork.

She was born into a family that everyone knew of and respected, but by the time Maud was entering the fifth decade of her life and truly figuring out that she would see centuries more (her mother’s lover at the time of her conception had failed to mention that he was half long-lived) her grandmother had gambled away most of the family fortune.

Maud, being a well organized person, got her first job to help support her aging mother. It was a simple, low paying but steady position filing paperwork for a city Court. Year by year Maud kept working and kept getting faster and more efficient until she had her pick of where to work. Around that time, her first husband gifted her with a small white dog. She named it Cecil and doted upon it until her husband died of an unforeseen heart condition. In the following months, her supervisor allowed her to bring Cecil into work and Maud just never stopped. Whenever asked she can confirm without a doubt that: “but they said it was alright at my last job.” or “it’s to cope with my grief.”

That it’s been over five hundred years since that discusion or even the first Cecil is irrelevant to Maud. She and Cecil come as a pair and she talks more to her dog than to any other single person.

Her children inherited little of her extended lifespan and died in the course of a mere century. Since then, Maud has never looked for love again. Given that her family still holds an aristo name, she is still invited to all the big social functions and uses those occasions to catch up on all the gossip and spread some of her own. She enjoys an eclectic variety of hobbies such as palm reading and tarot cards and pulls these tricks out at social events, making her a hit and always on the guest list.

Her life though, is one of constant low-grade misery. Living alone but for Cecil in a single room of her family’s crumbling villa, Maud is a hoarder of junk and a woman with severe lack of people she genuinely considers as friends. Everyone’s acquaintance, she is, in fact, very lonely.

Her most recent position has her working at the Department of Municipality Operations as a file clerk. She’s been there as long as the Department has, and has her own little underground file room that is her kingdom. Alone and unsupervised, Maud reads almost every document, tax stub and receipt that passes through her hands and despite being just the batty old lady in the basement, probably knows more about what’s happening in Chaillot that anyone should. She’ll even trade that information for you, if you make it worth her while. Even if you don’t she will always give you a cup of tea and let you give Cecil treats.

Character in Play:

Maud looked over the rims of her large round glasses at the receipt in her hands. “Oh my, Cecil, darling. Won’t you look at that. What a naughty boy mr. Colette is. He’s two months behind on his tithes and only paid a third of that this months. Tut, tut.”

Cecil, snoring in the dog bed at her feet made no indication of whether he thought Mr. Colette was naughty or not, except to twitch his whiskers in his sleep. That didn’t stop Maud though. With a flick of Craft she opened one of the file cabinets behind her and pulled out a file with the gentleman in question’s name on it and began rifling through it. “Yes. Third time in the last four years he’s had trouble paying, and wasn’t he just bragging last week about how well business was going? Hmm… I smell something fishy, and it’s not your breath, Cecil.”

The dos still didn’t deign her with a response, so Maud bundled the new receipt up with the old ones and pulled the whole file into her outbox, writing a note on it for one of her supervisors to take a second look.

Mr. Finnes,
I think it might be worth double checking the tithe amounts for Mr. Colette.
Hope the wife and kids are doing well,
Xoxox
Didi in filing

Then she pulled off her glasses and, looking around to make sure no one else was there, pulled a flask from her pocket and poured a bit into her empty teacup. It really did look almost the same color as tea, and really, what was the harm in a little midday drink? None at all, that was what.

Taking a sip, Maud bent down to scratch her dog’s soft head. “What’s next then, Cecil, my lovely? What shall we discover today?”

Could I get a general and 4 family rolls?
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead, We'll wander back to home and bed.
