Personality

Personality:
Viktor is a man of complicated character that enjoys simple, yet unorthodox pleasures. It’s truly difficult to pinpoint his make-up when he can so easily tailor it to a particular situation he’s in. Few individuals outside his small, immediate family truly know what kind of man he is, and he figures it’s in his best interest to keep it that way. As far back as Viktor can remember it was grilled into him that the only loyalty needed was loyalty to family and Territory. The nature of business that the Torvins dealt in further reinforced these ideas by making it nearly impossible for any type of relationships beyond the circle of family. Others that he worked with, sometimes frequently, were nothing more than associates and acquaintances. Viktor kept his distance and while it was increasingly easy to do so, there was still a part of him that wanted to connect to others on a personal level that didn’t involve lies or dishonesty in the end.

His dedication to perfection makes him extremely reliable with tasks, jobs, and contracts he’s hired to work on. A fighter when he needs to be, Viktor works best in a large groups as a leader and strategist as far as conflict is concerned. Unlike the Warlord Prince’s in his family, his caste provides a bit more level headedness when it comes to stressful situations. Inspiring others under his charge has never been the problem, but as a mercenary no one can ever fully trust in the other. This fact makes him a slightly paranoid individual who feels that if it’s easy for him to deceive others then he should surely expect it to be done to him. Present times see Viktor working alone more often. Less involved are the businesses of pirating and direct assaults in favor of more clandestine and time-consuming jobs. It’s forced him to recently become a bit of a recluse, even in regards to his family.

While money and serving his homeland is always a motivating factor to do the things that Viktor does, the dark renown that comes with the job pleases him the most. Both healthy and dangerous competition between him and his brother brought about a growing self-pride that drives him. He wants the names that he’s known by to be whispered by others in fear. He wants to see the fruits of his labor end up causing pain, strife, and chaos for those unfortunate enough to be his targets. He wants to succeed at every challenge and come out on top every, single time. Failure is never an option in Viktor’s eyes and he’ll admit that’s part of the fun.

Likes:
  • Glacia: Home is where the heart is and no matter how far his work takes him, Glacia will always be his true home. It being his family’s homestead might speak for the feeling of separation that he feels being away from it at times, but a solid patriotic factor is a reason as well. Viktor was brought up to believe that Glacians were a strong and profound people. There is an unmatched strength in Glacia’s people that’s reflected in both Blood, Landen, and the land. It’s very easy to feel a sense of pride in this, but it can be somewhat overshadowed by the Territory’s political and religious aspirations. All in all, Viktor considers himself wholly loyal.
  • Work: For some, living an honest life can be difficult and a chore. In the case of Viktor, living an infamous life is basically the type of freedom he loves and wishes to keep at all costs. He feels a certain satisfaction and enjoyment in doing things that the righteous might whisper about in horror. It has taken the better part of his young adult life for his work to be more than just work, but it has since become a pleasure for him.
  • Companionship: When Viktor’s mind is put to task and an undertaking needs to be accomplished, there are few things that get in the way of that and become distractions. Women and his insatiable appetite for all sorts of sexual behavior are Viktor’s main vices. These few lead to other minor sins, such as heavy drinking, but Viktor will definitely go out of his way to warm or be warmed by a woman companion.
Dislikes:
  • Politics: The game of politics is something that Viktor has never played and never wants to take part of. Although he would admit there is something to be intrigued about when it comes to the lies, cheating, deceit, and ugly business of government. However, the end result of political ambitions can sometimes be bad for business and worse for everything else. Still, Viktor on occasion does business with the political elites of Glacia. If not for the money it provides then just to feed that nationalistic hunger that arises now and again.
  • Dark Religion: There is only one main symbol of the Dark Religion and that’s the collars that go around the necks of those that are Light-Jeweled. That same symbol represents control, and control is something that both angers and causes him fear. Viktor bills himself as an orchestrator of anarchy at times and tends to loathe any measure of forced control. The collars are a form of division that doesn’t sit well with the Prince, and more times than not, that division begins in the household among family. Something that he himself has experienced.
  • Rules: Viktor has been breaking rules his entire life. In the name of himself, his family, and even Glacia itself. Rules are made for the pawns in the game, but circumventing and manipulating them are made for those capable of so much more. Rules and regulations may slow down what Viktor stands for and accomplishes on a professional basis, but they have never stopped him. For his sake, he should hope it never does.
Fears:
  • Captivity: Mercenary work is a dangerous business and the stakes get higher when there are jobs and contracts taken far beyond the borders of Glacia. Viktor has done is fair share of espionage for clients requiring information and actions elsewhere, but the threat of being caught obsessively terrorizes him. Something like this is a good motivator to make sure things are done flawlessly right the first time, but there’s no mistaking the perils certainly match the pay in many instances.
  • Love: The ultimate commitment and one that Viktor never intends to fall victim to. He finds it incredulous how one word can make people do foolish things. However, Viktor would be remiss to admit that there are a few times where falling in love was a real possibility. The definition of four letters combined to make one would change everything about his life and that’s something he’s not willing to give up yet. Or ever, for that matter.
  • His brother: Viktor’s brother has always stated that he’d never lay a finger on his family. He heard the same thing from his father as well, but calming words are sometimes meaningless when they come from a Warlord Prince, and too many times Viktor’s sister and mother bear the brunt of that anger. It was no secret that love waned between Viktor’s father and his children. His misplaced rage saw to that, and maybe it was only a matter of time before one of them turned on their father. Unfortunate circumstances led to the death of Ivar, but Viktor has always suspected that his brother was the orchestrator. This is reason enough to have fear of his older sibling, if not for the fact that he has since become the sole owner of the estate following the death of their father.
Craft Strengths:
  • Exploiting Weakness: Viktor is already an inherently dangerous man. Adding to that is his ability to use this Craft to seek out the most efficient way to dismantle an opponent by honing in on any weakness. Unless an individual is truly omnipotent, in battle, Viktor will find what makes someone weak and make them pay dearly for it.
  • Power Bolts: There is no sport in prolonging a fight. Viktor was made to be an offensive beast, and as such, has been trained to end the fight as quickly as possible. Power Bolts can cut through a person as easy as any steel, and with enough Jewel power behind it, sometimes battles are over before they can even begin.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Combat Shielding: Viktor prefers to let his Craft do the fighting at a distance, but sometimes it comes to steel against steel. While no slouch with a weapon in his hand, Combat Shielding is an amazing compliment to hand to hand fighting. The odds remain in your favor at any distance, but if an enemy closes the distance on Viktor, without this precious Craft his chances of a promising outcome lower considerably.
  • Jewel Management: Conflicts that last longer than expected are a real danger to Viktor. He prefers a show of force quickly and powerfully, however, if the fight lingers too long then there’s a real danger of draining his Jewel to complete exhaustion. It’s a hazard that just might be Viktor’s Achilles heel.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Ingrid Torvin / Witch / White to Rose - 56 / Missing
Father: Ivar Torvin / Warlord Prince / Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk - 61 / Deceased
Brother: Gunnar Torvin / Warlord Prince / Opal to Red - 33
Half-Brother: Anders Nyberg / Warlord Prince / Rose to Purple Dusk - 31 *
Sister: Freya Torvin / Healer / Tiger Eye to Summer Sky - 26

History:

By the time Viktor was born, the Torvins illicit side businesses was already in full swing. Their home, situated in a rural area of the Salo, had been the center for all sorts of questionable activity for quite some time. Of course, Ivar and Ingrid’s intensions started out respectable before taking a turn for the worst. Both were accomplished weaponsmiths with their work being vended throughout Glacia. Marketing beyond their borders had been difficult due to their Light Jeweled status, and even if their work had been some of the finest, competing with other Dark Jeweled peers had made life more than a little difficult for them. Turning to other options like illegal gambling, fencing, and for hire thievery, the Torvins built a very small empire that both accepted and offered services that facilitated criminal activity. As long as their district caretaker was paid adequately and specifics unknown, they operated with a certain amount of anonymity. When Gunnar and Viktor entered the picture, things would significantly change in the Torvin household.

Viktor and his brother knew they would have to eventually leave home to do what most children their age did, and seek an education beyond what their parents could provide. It would be a welcome change for the boys who first enjoyed a life where family came first and their secrets stayed secrets. Sidebar activities had to be put on hold for a time when the Territory court became aware of the potential dark male descents. Viktor and his brother had to struggle through the growing fallout between their father, who felt constrained by the Territory attention and their mother, who seemed to want to end their forbidden, illegal conduct. It was common for Ingrid to be the target of Ivar’s rage, and when big brother Gunnar tried to stand up for her, his untrained Opal wasn’t enough to take on his father’s Purple Dusk. Guilt weighed heavy on the hearts of the boys when they left, knowing what their family was and the monster that would be watching over their mother. Then soon to be sister.

The brothers remained close throughout their growing years. Closeness turned to competitiveness, but this furthered their motivation. Full descents to Red and Sapphire automatically brought them into Glacia’s elite. Freya, who would forever be in the shadow of her siblings, would take up the mantle of Healer. Viktor and Gunnar themselves would excel as fighters. Parents with the ability to craft weapons had given the brothers an early start on the art of battle and it wasn’t wasted. Gunnar, who had gained several steps ahead of his brother by harnessing the Red had become a vicious combatant. Viktor handled things with a bit more finesse. He was seen as a natural born leader with a prudence that his Warlord Prince brother could never have. A natural tactician and an emerging strategist was a highly sought after commodity, even as Gunnar would argue jealously that brains mattered much less than brawn when it came down to a pure fight. All in all, the brothers would return home and await for word to be sent that their Glacian service would finally be called upon. During this time, information had come to the brothers that revealed their mother had gone missing.

Freya swore up and down that she had no knowledge of their mother’s disappearance. There were obvious signs of abuse that their sister showed, both physically and mentally. Viktor, who had been the closest to her throughout the years, found that she had become reclusive and withdrawn. At times even shying away from his touch. Meanwhile, through coercion, Gunnar found out that Ivar had been prostituting Freya and that his bad business dealings had been tied to working for, and sometimes against, the Glacian Underground. However, their father continued to maintain his innocence that he too knew nothing about Ingrid’s disappearance. Shunning their father was one of the easiest things that all three siblings had done. Gunnar and Viktor relieved Ivar of all extracurricular activities that the Torvin household had been involved in. They sized names and documents, while Gunnar assumed all Torvin assets as firstborn.

Viktor took to establishing connections with the people his father had done business with. Most of them were thieves, rogues, and murderers for hire. Meanwhile, Gunnar had put out a contract on the out of towners that paid a hefty amount for the right to abuse their sister. When word had come through that the three men had been found, their subsequent capture, torture, and death by the brothers came next.

Unbeknownst to Viktor, Gunnar had a fourth man captured. His torment and suffering had been as exquisite as a raging Warlord Price that commanded the Red could have made it. During the hour of the man’s death, Gunnar held a single, partially torn letter in his hand and presented it to his dying father that he had maimed only minutes ago. He’d question the man about the letter, why it would be hidden, why it was partly destroyed, as well as the identity of the person who signed it as Hannes. Even in his dying breaths, Ivar gave his curious son no answers. Until the rest of his family found out themselves, Ivar would take to the grave that Viktor was not his true son, but the son of Hannes.

Viktor found that his father’s disappearance was as strange as his mother’s, but a lot less hurtful. It was the start of another chapter in his life and that of his siblings. While Freya stayed at home and became the administrator of the household, Viktor and Gunnar went near and far. Under different names and for a price, the services of the brothers as mercenary marauders could be bought. Their exploits rippled through Kaeleer’s unsavory underground and eventually returned to the very place of their birth.

Viktor would soon be summoned by a Priestess named Reija. The family had gone through great lengths to conceal their Glacian identities when they worked, but Viktor was reminded that nothing was beyond any one person’s grasp as long as they had the money and means to acquire it. The cold and calculating Priestess started with threats first, in a very subtle way. She laid out all the things that could be charged against the Torvin household, including treason. Then Reija started to play on Viktor’s patriotic and religious sensibilities; for better or worse. Mentioning that his skills could be used to best serve Glacia’s needs as the Darkness intended. Viktor, not one to hold back on his curious side, asked why his brother wasn’t chosen and the response was that there was a certain level of required tact that could be questionable for a Warlord Prince of Gunnar’s nature. Viktor would have probably agreed to it all even without the coercion. There was nothing pleasant about being a puppet for government, but as long as he could covertly continue his lifestyle while furthering Glacia’s growing dominance – and for the right price – the man was on board.

To Gunnar’s dismay, there was little he could do to protest their splitting up lest the Province Court came down on his family. Viktor himself struck out as a self-made man. His contracts concentrated mostly in Glacia and against The Underground. Small but impactful operations that helped expose traitors. There was some conflict about it, having been born brother to a collared Light Jewel sibling, but Viktor continued his due diligence. Other contracts took him through Nharkava, targeting a resurgent rebellion. It was the place where he developed an insatiable hunger for foreign women, debauchery, and drink. He answered secretly to one person and one person only, and Reija continued to keep him employed, though he continues to be curious of what their end-game might be. However, it seems his next assignment would be one of his most important yet. One of great secrecy as Glacia seeks to send its feelers to other territories. Little Terreille is one of them. It was a place he’d visited before in quick passing. His contract called for low key observation, information and if possible, and low kinectic operations in key areas in Little Terreille. He was told it would be a long term contract and that ties to his family would be completely broken. Again, Gunnar could not object but the man that wore the Red had plans of his own.

Character in Play:
Viktor remembered back to his first few long cons where patience was the end game and he had none of it. These days, depending on the contact, he wished that the game lasted much longer than what was entailed. He’s seen other mercenaries like himself get so obsessed with their craft that they become victims of it. Especially if they didn’t have something other than “the job” as another anchoring point in their lives. His brother and sister were that anchoring point, but he’d be lying to himself if he didn’t feel like he was slowly slipping away from them. Much like how the three siblings slipped emotionally and physically away from their parents. The business was a slippery slope on all sides. One moment you’re finding balance on the very tip top of your game and the next you’re tumbling down that slope of inevitability before being consumed by the pit of consequence. You could lose it all in a moment and Viktor has come close more times than he’s comfortable to admit. However, that day was not today.

Glacia loves her Jewels. Despite the obvious inequality between Light and Dark, no matter the color, you are obligated to your homeland. For as patriotic as Viktor was, the treason that The Underground facilitated was enough for him to take the job for free. In that time he learned that the faction was much larger than could have been anticipated. Large in the fact that they were spread throughout Glacia enough that it was difficult to one small group to the other. The Underground’s level of furtiveness among its members was astonishing, but that was the long con in this situation. Waiting for the smallest stumble of even one individual could reveal information damaging to their cause.

When carelessness strikes, it’s usually unknown to the perpetrator of it. As soon as the Climber, an Underground guide for Glacian escapees awoke, his groggy eyes finally focused on the blank parchment that was laid at his feet. There was more fear at the realization of what it was then finally being aware that he was stripped of his clothes, his hands and feet were bound to the chair he sat in, and there was a tight, heavy collar around his neck. Fear was soon mixed with confusion when he looked up to see his friend, Viktor, standing there over him. “Joaran. What.. what is the meaning of this?” Cold eyes looked back at the man and when he realized that his “friend” wasn’t yet going to give him an answer he struggled against his bonds. The searing pain in his body the emanated from the collar around his neck caused him to scream out. This is when Viktor finally addressed him. “No one will hear you. It’s just you, I, and my companion over there that will administer as much pain as you’re willing to allow this to continue for.” There was a pause and Viktor smiled. “For the months and months you had me fetch your provisions for you before you up and disappeared, but I have seen you in the possession of one of these small pieces of parchments before.” He assumed that they were the instructions to a meeting place between Climber and escapees. The captured Climber had previously, every single time, destroyed the parchment which uses an unknown weaved Craft to read it. It was only by sheer luck that Viktor happened upon it discarded on the ground after delivering supplies to a known location between the two. It was the break that he had been looking for all along.

“Who is your contact for these messages? I want a name.” Viktor kneeled down and shushed him before he had a chance to mount of denial. The look in the Climber’s eyes was something Viktor had seen before. The look of being deceived. Who would have thought that their “chance” meeting in a tavern where Viktor as Joaran would meet, engage in conversation, and befriend would lead the Climber to where he was now. “I’ll ask for two requests. One, is that you don’t insult my intelligence. The second is that you shouldn’t take this personally. It’s only business.” The smile that stretched Viktor’s lips made the other man sigh. He knew that last bit was a lie.

“Now that we have that squared away, my friend.. shall we begin?”
