Appearance

Play By: Brock O'hurn
Distinguishing Features:
He is most often recognized for the long and flowing hair that he rarely ever 'dresses' up.  The interweaving of light and dark is at best, tied back out of his face in a loose tie.  He sees no reason to cut it, and even less reason to try to mimic the males of the Court.  If he were ever to be asked to join a Court, he doubts it would be for anything requiring short hair and military manners - which he also does not have.

Personality

Personality:
Leif prefers to remain quiet, even when his veins boil.  As calm and passive as his body posture may seem, his eyes always give him away.  There is a passion that boils in their depths, one that screams for recognition and reciprocation.  He does his best to be what he is expected to be - he strives his hardest to ensure that nothing he or his sister does will bring shame upon their family.

Well, further shame than their existence already seems to accomplish.

As such, he strives to appear as a respectable businessman who wishes to repent for whatever sins may have granted him his Jewels, though he truly doesn't give two shits about the Dark Faith and their supposed 'sins'.

His humor and warmth is only visible to those who take the time to get to know him - and not many of their clientele is inclined do such a thing.  It is mostly seen by such people when he is escorting his sister around, his icy exterior melting a bit whenever she smiles or prods him into laughter.  But even then, the genuine humor and laughter masks a deep pain in his heart.  He was born a Prince.  He wants to serve, and to be accepted... and he knows the chances of that are unlikely at best.

No one wants a Light Jewelled Prince.  Not as part of their Circles, and not as a father to their Children.  They wouldn't want to risk the souls of their offspring, after all.  Something his father has drilled into his head repeatedly.  As much as he wants to be a father, he fears it.

As such, he rarely has lovers for more than a few weeks.  His father has already made passing remarks of having him 'gelded' to ensure that his sins aren't passed through his seed, and he would rather not have the cruel male give it serious consideration should word of a possible love match reach his father's ears.

Likes:
  • 1.  Order - There are rules, and there are routines.  Working in the family shop, without his father anywhere nearby, means that so long as he follows these rules he and his sister are safe.  So long as things remain ordered, the world will spin and life will not be overly uncomfortable... provided his father remains out of the picture.
  • 2.  Gemstones - Specifically, he likes shaping them into artful pieces to be worn by the glittering throngs of the Courts and the aristocrats of his homeland.  He enjoys taking something rough and unsightly - and shaping them into sparkling treasures that will be sought after even by the Darkest of Kaeleer.
  • 3.  His Jewels - despite his Jewels being seen as a curse by most, he finds them beautiful.  His Jewels are the color of his skies at dawn, his favorite time of the day.  The bright yellow of the sun pouring over the mountains is reflected in the gifts the Darkness gave him.  He finds beauty in them, and wishes that others could see it as he does.
Dislikes:
  • 1.  Davyn Belsteig - the man was given Paternal rights over himself and his twin, despite not being their true father.  Far from seeing it as an honor, the man sees it as a chain around his neck, and he enjoys punishing Leif and Analis for their existence.  There has been many a time in Leif's life when he wished that his father would perish in the mines or at his own hands -- and many a time his father has punished him for the involuntary wish.
  • 2.  Collars - It was bad enough to have his parents consistently rifling through his thoughts.  To him that was little better than rape.  When the collars were first fitted around their throats he had almost thought that the violation would cease - instead it grew worse from his Father.  With the collar to ensure that his son was biddable, his father could get even more heavy handed in his 'inspections', and it was only when Ayala stepped in to take both controlling rings that their 'cursed children' breathed easier.
  • 3.  The Dark Religion - his parents are aware of it, he has been punished often for his thoughts on the faith of his homeland.  Eventually, they came to terms with the fact that 'this' might be their son's sin upon his soul.  So long as he never breathes a word of his disdain for the tenets of the faith aloud, they leave him be about it.  He observes things as he is supposed to - but his heart is never in it.  He can't bring himself to worship the Darkness in the same way his people do - not if they believe that the Darkness curses some of her children for things they haven't even done yet.
Fears:
  • 1. Genocide - Leif is not an unintelligent man, nor is he a man that can ignore obvious trends. Glacia is his home, and he loves it.  But he is also well aware that Glacia does not love him.  He can understand why so many are willing to run, and why so many are willing to smuggle them out -- but he is also aware that antagonizing the Darker Jewelled will have only one inevitable outcome - death.  AT what point will the fanatics of the Dark Religion call for all those 'cursed children' to simply be broken if there is no chance of a Dark Offering?  And if that should happen, how much longer afterwards until all those 'cursed' are encouraged to be culled from the bloodlines?
  • 2.  Dark Males - specifically, those who look at his sister with any heat to their gaze.  One of his recurring nightmares is that a Dark Male will Rut on his twin - and that she may come out of it Broken if she comes out of it at all.  His sister is a headstrong female who remains unbowed despite the many trials of her life, and he often bristles when he sees anyone Darker than himself eyeballing her like a fresh side of beef.  He would do anything to protect her... and he is aware that this threat is one he would lose against.
  • 3.  Befriending Smugglers - he doesn't advertise the fact that his mind isn't the best at hiding secrets.. and he worries that any friends he makes might not be as willing to swallow the injustices of their lives.  If any of them ARE smugglers, he sincerely hopes he never finds out.  All it would take is a visit from his father, and they would be found out.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1. Diplomacy - his 'father' often releases his temper on his light Jewelled children, and Leif often found ways to ensure that the worst of it struck himself.  Through use of body language and words, he was always able to draw his father's anger squarely onto his more sturdy shoulders once he began to notice the tell tale signs of his father's rising irritation.  That skill has been handy while working in the shop as well, for customers can sometimes be... problematic.  Of course, in those cases he is soothing tempers rather than riling them.
  • 2.  Artistry Craft - Beneath the calm and stoic exterior, there lies a male that seethes in anger over the injustice of his society.  He buries his anger and channels it into his work on the pieces of jewelry for the shop, taking raw gemstones from the family mines and carving them into truly extravagant pieces of work.
  • 3.  Enhanced Sight (Advanced) - Leif has learned to specialize his eyes into seeing the flaws in items.  Whether those items be Jewels, jewels, jewelry, swords... he can spot the flaw with relative ease.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Mind Barriers - Even before his family got collars for their 'cursed children', Ayala and Davyn made a habit of sweeping through their thoughts to ensure that they were 'doing as was right'.  Ayala at least attempted to keep her touch light, most times.  Davyn, on the other hand, seemed to enjoy making his 'children' squirm in discomfort as he went over every thought and memory.  As such, Leif has never been able to muster up more than the flimsiest of barriers to keep others out.
  • 2.  Aural Shielding - There were to be no secrets, at least not from Leif or Analis.  Whenever they were caught trying to muffle their conversations, even over something as innocent as what games they would play, they were punished.  As such, even attempting to raise Aural Shields makes Leif extremely uncomfortable and causes his shoulders to twitch as if he is expecting to be struck.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Ayala Tostain - Summer Sky to Opal - Black Widow; 136ap
Father:  Davyn Belsteig - Purple Dusk to Sapphire - Warlord Prince; 130ap
Siblings:
(Twin) Analis Tostain - White to Yellow - Hearth Witch;  157ap
Trystan Tostain - Opal to Green - Warlord Prince; 161ap
Brynhild Tostain - Purple Dusk to Opal - Black Widow; 170ap

Birth Father: Jorund Ygvilef - Rose to Purple Dusk - Warlord Prince; 135ap (Jewels Not Rolled)

History:
Ayala Tostain grew up in a precarious situation - she had a Summer Sky birthright.  While she wasn't immediately written off, especially due to her caste, she was given classes with a few other aristocratic children in similar positions.  There she met Jorund, and as they came closer to their Offerings they grew closer.  Jorund was in even more of a precarious situation than she... he could descend to the Opal.

After her Virgin Night, she and Jorund spent a great deal of time together.  They fell in love.  After their Offerings, those feelings were still there.  But Jorund had only descended to the Purple Dusk, and Ayala had claimed the Opal.  This didn't matter to Ayala nearly as much as it mattered to Ayala's mother - who then promptly arranged a marriage to another prominently Dark family.

Ayala was married to Davyn Belsteig quickly - and was caught in her affair with Jorund after only a few short months.  Worse, Davyn knew that the swelling belly of his wife was likely filled with the offspring of her affair, not with his own.  But he couldn't prove it - and Ayala named him as the Father at their Birthrights.

Birthrights which infuriated him.  Leif was certain that his mother had done it to ensure that Davyn couldn't kill them out of hand - but as the years passed he wished she had at least had the decency to not name a father at all.  Davyn's already heavy hand grew even more tight when both he and his sister emerged without even a Rose.

What had been a mostly happy childhood quickly devolved into a tense and painful set of years.  It was Davyn's idea that they 'ensure' the thoughts of their cursed children were on the right path - and it was Davyn who checked them the most often.  There were many nights where Leif could hear his mother arguing with their 'father' about how he might damage them if he continued to be so thorough with the inspection of their thoughts... she, at least, was considerate enough to be light in her 'checks'.

Every thought, every wish, every memory was inspected.  He and his sister were not even granted the most intimate of privacies in their minds.. let alone in trying to keep to themselves when playing games.  They were to be observed in everything - they were to be kept to a strict and zealotous upbringing to ensure that they did not encourage more of the Dark Mother's punishments.

And in his parents minds, surely, such methods worked out.  None of the rest of their children were born so cursed.  In fact, neither of them were.  Trystan was born to an Opal, and Brynhild was born to a Purple Dusk.  They were both guaranteed to be welcomed with open arms wherever they chose to go.  While Leif and his sister were shuttled off to learn how to work in the mines and oversee operations there, Trystan was given the best tutors and lessons in an effort to ensure that he could be granted a position in a Court.

While their thoughts were breeched at random points and in painful ways, Trystan was doted on like some sort of savior for the Family's Honor.  Even Ayala began to drift away from Leif and his sister to shower affections on her Dark Son.

Leif and Analis knew, as that became clear, that they had only each other.  As Trystan grew, the lesson was made even more clear - because shortly after Leif's Offering, Davyn had Trystan dipping into his head.  To 'teach' him how to oversee his Lighter family.  That would be his responsibility someday, after all.

Trystan wasn't cruel about it, at least... but his disgust for Leif and Analis was made clear as he made a misstep and allowed such thoughts to transfer to Leif.  It was the first time in his life that he pictured choking his father to death.. and Trystan was dutiful in explaining the sinful thought to his father.

He was beaten for hours after that.  He never forgave his little brother for the betrayal, nor did Analis.  Fortunately, by the time Brynhild came of age, they were 'well behaved' enough to be sent to Vaasa.  They both knew the truth - they were being sent to Vaasa because of the situation with Nharkava, and because his father had negotiated trade deals with the darker-skinned territory.

Leif and Analis were well aware that Davyn didn't want them being 'corrupted' through any contact.  As insulting as that was, they were both inordinately happy to be sent away... even if it was to one of the most terrifying Dark Cities in the Realm.  Ayala spent the first year with them, helping them get the shop settled and situated before returning to her husband and Darker children.

They were pleased to see her go.  Between the two of them they were able to ensure that the shop not only survived, it thrived.  Analis had a head for numbers, and Leif had a talent for the mingling of Gem and Metal.  He even began to take commissions for pieces that could seat the most precious of belongings - Jewels.  For the first year of commissions, he was to make them only for the Lighter Jewelled of the city.

When he saved three Landen from being crushed during an accident in the street, he obtained approval from passing Dark observers who saw him shield the three with Craft and Body.. and they rewarded him with commissions for their own Jewels.  The letters from his Mother were warm and approving for the first time in his life... and he felt hope.

Until the year 191... when his father and mother arrived for a visit and with collars.  The next three months were sheer hell, at least for Leif.  He did all he could to ensure his sister was always with his mother during that extended visit.. and he screamed.  Often.

It was only when his sister finally convinced his mother to intervene that Ayala removed the control rings from his father, and then took his father home to see to their other Children.  At least she had the kindness to give Analis money to ensure that her brother could heal properly.  Analis swore she would never let Davyn near Leif again... and he had to drag promises from her that she would not do anything stupid.

Character in Play:
"They're here, Leif."  That strangled tone in her voice let him know it was not just their mother that had shown up this time - though truthfully he could already tell that Davyn was with her.  The cloying sense of the Abyss in his skull trailed fingers down his spine, as it always did.  He sighed, setting the half cut emerald in a small box.  Then he set his fingers to moving his tools back into their proper place.

"Leif.."

"He will take it more poorly if this desk is a mess, Analis.  I'll be right down."  He drew himself together, doing his best to pull everything into place.  He organized his thoughts in the same way he organized his desk, each subject going into the proper place and position in his mind.

It wouldn't remain that way, if his 'father' picked up his usual habits.

Then he actually took the time to braid his hair back, and shrug on the jacket.  The travel down the stairs was too fast for him - he didn't WANT to see their father.  He didn't want to look at him,or smell him, or feel that darkness creeping along his skin.  But what he wanted never mattered - not when that man was around.

Ayala's warm kiss to his cheek earned a flicker of a smile before he lowered his gaze.  "Mother."

"You've done well, Leif, Analis.  Come.  We've brought something for the two of you."  His jaw tightened as he offered his mother his arm, walking with her towards the small kitchen where Analis kept tea ready for clients.  His father was already seated at the table, and he was smiling.

Instantly, Leif knew this was going to be bad.  His father never smiled when it came to Analis or himself.  Not even when they were going over the books and could prove that the shop was doing inordinately well.  His eyes trailed down from his father's face to the boxes on the table, and he felt his hands run cold.

"As you may have heard, the Light Jewelled are to be protected, and granted external signs of that protection by their families."

His hearing dulled, his vision darkening a little.  He'd been taking some commissions for these things... collars that could seat the darker Jewel of the unfortunate that had to wear one.  He'd been praying, in his own way, that his mother would not do this.  He should have known better.  He could hear the higher pitched gasp of Analis as her eyes took in the offending apparatus on the table, and he removed his arm from his mother's hand.

"I see."

"This is a good thing, Leif.  These will ensure that no one..."

"I see, Mother."  He clenched his jaw, his mind racing.  HIs own mother was going to slap a collar around his throat... little better than she would a dog.  Never mind that the collars were silver with etchings of gold.  Never mind that they were obviously meant to resemble jewellry more than the chains that they truly were.

Really, the collars were just a physical representation of the disease of the Dark Faith.  He knew that.  But the thought of wearing one made his skin crawl.  His mother stopped trying to reassure him.  She knew, as well as anyone, just how he felt about the Dark Faith.  So it was no surprise when she collared him first.

The feel of it latching about his throat had his eyes locking on hers, and there was no hiding the disgust in his gaze for that brief moment.  He thought he could actually see a bit of sadness in her gaze, but she resolutely turned from him to settle the other about his sister's neck.

The sound of his father clinking two bits of metal together drew his attention... and seeing those rings settle about his father's hand made his hands clench.  If his father used that ring to torture his sister, he was going to kill him.  Consequences be damned.  Even thinking it, he flinched.

"Now then, son... sit.  We shall see how the two of you are doing in your paths today, hrm?"
