Distinguishing Features:
There is no denying that the two eldest of the Devlin boys look incredibly similar. Though there are enough differences in expression and their mannerisms that it is very rare for someone to mistake one for the other on sight, the resemblance is almost uncanny.

Kean's eyes are always lit up by a fire that whispers of a secret that he has kept deep within, a laughter that is always lurking. He is thinner than his brother, his body kept in shape, but the lean body of a man who spends most of his days behind a desk rather than out training with the guard.

Personality

Personality:
Kean Devlin was quite honestly the perfect choice for Steward of the Territory Court. While he held one of the darkest jewels in his family, it was not this strength that commended him for the title or position. He possessed a detailed mind, where he kept information sorted and filed, his ledgers neat and pristine, ready for perusal whenever someone feels it necessary to look over his accounts. He is also fair yet firm with the scheduling of staff, and always keeping track of their birthdays and family members in a way that seems almost impossible to someone who does not have access to his extensive library of notes that he keeps in his office. Perhaps it is not all of it useful, but when there is something that he wants to know about any number of topics, there is always a place for him to begin his search.

In that same sense, he takes his position quite seriously, always checking every account he receives or writes multiple times before passing it along. While not perfect by any stretch, it is quite rare for a report to pass his desk with any question of accuracy. Also any advice or suggestion he gives to the Queen in regards to the ruling of her Court and home is always given with a sincerity that is in contrast to his usual persona. He understands the gravity of the situation the Territory is in, particularly with Loreniel and her dual caste as the leader, and he does everything in his power and personality to strengthen her as a person and as a Queen.

Of course, that does not mean that he tells her everything he does on that front. Kean is not above making the most difficult of decisions - decisions that Loreniel and other members of her Court are reluctant to make. He understands that there are times when ruling that one cannot stand on kindness and compassion, but must make a judgement that will damn some innocents in order to save even more. He never takes such a judgement lightly, often weighed down by the responsibility of his actions in such a case, but that does not hinder him from making those decisions. There have been times that warnings or reports have crossed his desk that should have been looked into to mitigate the damage done that he simply overlooked in order to force Lore's hand in a way that was necessary for the Territory as a whole. It is not completely manipulation - at least he does not see it as such. He does not force the Queen to stand one side or the other, but simply to make the decision that is necessary to strengthen her stand and gain support for her.

Despite the rather serious manner in which he approaches his work at Court, being so surrounded by his family and childhood friends as he is in the Court, he is always perceived as a happy man. In fact, it is one of the traits he is most known for. There is hardly a day that he goes without a smile, and he is always quick to tell a joke whether it be a good one or one that is rather old and frankly bad. He also was one of the ones who encouraged the prank war between the families by the younger of his siblings, even if he was far too old and responsible to initiate the battle. He loves deeply to laugh, and when he works with such a serious outlook, he is quick to release it in order to smile and be at ease. This of course, is not without fail. He has been known to be something of a grump if he does not get enough sleep, more particularly when he goes without coffee. It is one of the reasons the staff has taken to spoiling him and keeping a warm pot of coffee ready for him before he even wakes up. This is also the case when the man is sick. He is the poorest of patients, and it is so unusual to see him so grumpy and out of sorts with the Court as when he happens to catch the summer cold.

Kean's quick smile and easy, rich laugh make him quite a guest at parties. He's quick to make friends, though perhaps none outside of Court that he allows close enough to learn those secrets, but just the same he is not without someone he can call on in order to go get a drink after dinner. He is also known as quite a charmer, though he does not put any real effort into it. When he is not working, he has a personality that simply attracts others to him, something he can at times take for granted.

The Prince is not untouched by the animosity and prejudice against those who bear the Black Widow caste. It seems unusual for the man as he serves so closely to a Queen who also bears that caste. Still, he has not grown past that innate fear that the Territory has held for quite some time. While it was the influence of the prejudice of the Territory that began this emotion in the man, he began to learn of them and also found that he does not trust their craft. That is not to say he treats them poorly - no in fact he is rather just himself when he comes into contact with them on his own. But that does not stop his allowing certain tragedies to occur in regards to them when he feels it necessary. He knows that they have sight beyond what the eyes see, and he knows that what he does will not always be hidden from them. Each decision he makes is a risk to himself, and he understand that - but he still makes them, as it is the only way he sees to garner the result that is necessary. He limits his interactions with Black Widows on a private level, as he does not entirely trust them to have his best interests at heart. But more than a personal fear, he is not entirely convinced that their craft is not going to be what tears the Territory apart.

Likes:
  • A good joke. And along that same line, a good prank as well. Or perhaps he simply loves to laugh. While he may have been forced to adulthood and to serve the Queen in seriousness, there is a part of him that still longs for the days where laughter came so easily; of days when the weight of the Territory did not so hinder his actions. He is always on the look out for the next great joke, and is always known to quietly encourage the younger of his siblings to create a rather ridiculous prank to ease the tension that everyone feels.
  • Coffee. While there are many in the court who prefer tea, Kean prefers coffee. While not a completely unusual request, it is something the staff has become accustomed to, and he has been known to send for a personal blend of coffee for a particular flavoring or aroma. Each morning the coffee is hot and waiting by his bed, something that he has become so accustomed to he has not ever had to go without it.
  • Being surrounded by family. It is a fortunate position to be in, the man who was raised in such a large family. Kean adores the size of his family and loves that he is able to still be so close to them all. He feels quite content that the arrangement in Court is as it is, and that he's able to live so close to those he cares about and those who care about him.
Dislikes:
  • Being forced to make the tough decisions. Despite the ability to look at the facts with a cold detachment, Kean does not want to be the one forced to make those decisions. He does not want to be the one who has to wake up every morning knowing that he is responsible for no small amount of wrong in the Territory. He does so because it is necessary that someone be that man. And if no one else will step up to take the position, then he is forced to - but the nightmares have been known to haunt him on occasion.
  • Late nights. Being awake so early in the morning has a great number of benefits, but one of them is a deep dislike of working late into the night. He would much prefer to finish all his work within the time he allots so he can move past it into the evening. That of course, is not always the case. In a Territory like Scelt there is always something that needs to be done, and when trying to keep everything from fracturing as it is wont to do, he has spent many evenings working in his office rather than falling into his bed to find sleep. That is not to say he is opposed to late nights when spent in far more favorable exchanges, but he is still a man who enjoys his sleep.
  • Being sick. No one likes being sick, but Kean is so seldom ill, he takes it as a personal offense when he is. He becomes something akin to professionally helpless, and grumbles and whines the entire time. A summer cold can quickly turn into a rather remarkable tragedy when it is Kean who gets ill.
Fears:
  • Scelt erupting into civil war. The threat has been very real and immediate for some time now. How the Territory has managed to hold on to some semblance of order and decorum is a small mercy granted by Mother Night herself. Kean very much fears what will happen to his homeland if that were to happen. Civil war would do nothing but weaken the Territory, weaken it from the inside leaving it primed for any outside influence. The rumors of how things are happening in Nharkava with Glacia are terrifying enough - Kean does not want to see what would happen first hand. Nor does he trust any of the Territories in Kaeleer too much currently.
  • Black Widows. It is the sort of fear he does not openly display. No one knows of this fear, particularly because the Queen he serves is of that caste as well. This is one that is deeply rooted in the man - from growing up in a Territory that has such a distrust for the caste. Despite his serving the Queen he was destined to serve due to familial ties and childhood friendships, he does not trust the caste completely. Despite the animosity that was raised throughout the Territory, theirs is a craft he cannot completely understand - nor is it one he could ever trust. He does not trust those crafts that delve into the mind or the future, nor is he ready to trust one who walks so close to the Twisted Kingdom.
  • Fear of being rejected. Kean puts quite a bit of his focus in his family - he relies heavily on their support in order to make it through the day to day life of the Steward of Scelt. He fears that were it ever to come to light the decisions he's made or the things he's done would reflect poorly on them, but more than that - that they would no longer want anything to do with him. That they would see his actions as abhorrant and therefore reject the man who made those decisions. He would far rather face his own death than deal with that sort of disappointment.

History:
For the all of his life so far, Kean has always heard stories of how his father was with his mother. There are only words of happiness between them, the love they shared rare and fresh in their life. Kean never would see it first hand, since shortly after he was born, his mother became very ill. Aidan and Kean were cared for by the Doyle's and Killans, a pair of families that were very close to the Devlin clan while Liam took his wife away to the countryside to try to heal. When he returned, it was without his wife, so Liam was left with two really small sons.

Focusing through his grief on his family and the weight of the duty that was on him for the Territory, the little family holding tightly together. Liam shortly after added another child to the family, a boy close to Kean's age being adopted. They did not know it then, but that first action would soon stretch across their entire lives, the Devlin clan soon becoming well known for the ever-expanding family.

However focused on his duty and children he was, Liam wanted to find happiness again. He met a beautiful woman, someone he found who loved him. What Liam did not know when he got married was that she was a selfish creature whose love could not extend past herself and what she held for Liam to care for the family he had already begun with another woman. The three little boys wanted a mother's love, and were quite excited to try to earn her affection, however it soon became apparent that she was more interested in her own family with Liam.

When Veira had her first son, the entire family was excited. Little Brogan was the newest addition to their family, and the three little boys were beginning to see the importance of the connection with their ever-growing brood. Over the years, Veira had another child and Liam brought a number of other children into the family. The little family was growing quickly, and Kean was quick to forge out his own place in their midst. As one of the oldest, he found his own place complete with laughter and jokes, the boys all rambunctious running through the estates.

Kean did not hear much about the circumstances involving Veira's departure from their home for many years. He knew there had been a fight, but he did not hear the details until many years later when he and Aidan had been discussing the rift that was being erected in their family. He began to grow more serious, seeing the path his life was intended to take and began to focus on that. The close ties between the Devlin, Doyle, and Killan families soon resulted in a formal Territory Court. Kean heard from Aidan - also saw the state the Territory was in. The eldest of the Devlin boys stepped up to the task, each finding their place as the mantle was slowly passed from one generation to the next.

That looked very different for each of them. When Liam stepped aside in favor of Aidan as a ruler, Kean was left as the most logical choice to join Loreniel Killan's triangle. So he was brought to the servitude by the most logical manner, his dark jewel and family ties holding quite an influence in the Court. Kean kept his easy going nature in most things, but when it came to business of the Court, he faced it with a seriousness that the weight of such ordeals demanded. He has a quality to his decisions that does not lack compassion, but that favors results over compassion and kindness. He knows there are difficult decisions to be made, and he knows that there is no way to make everyone pleased with those hard decisions - but he is prepared to make them, or to advise his Queen to do so, if it is for the betterment of his Territory.

Over the years there have been some reports that have slipped from his desk, not all of them obviously - but enough so the Prince using the accident or the tragedy can spur his Queen into the decisions necessary for Scelt as a whole. He does not like doing so, but he is not above such things. There have been a number of warnings about the increasing violence towards the Black Widow caste, and while his fear of the caste does not rank high enough to ever set out to harm them, he has been allowing the persecution to continue.

Writing Sample:
The paper work on the Steward of Scelt's desk seemed to be unending. Whenever he would complete one stack of reports to his satisfaction, three more had already shown up needing his sign off or his attention. Nothing was ever done easily either. Every line was looked at, each report was gone over with painstakingly speed, but that was not the real issue. The real issues was that it never ended, and there were other things at Court that required more pressing attentions. The first of which, being that with Aidan gone to Dharo, there was Jade that he had to look after.

Some may have considered other things at Court more pressing than that, but Kean took his relationship with his older brother quite seriously, so he was determined to royally spoil the girl the entire time she was with him. Unfortunately, there were a number of things that were also vying for his attention. Not the least of these things were the fact that Loreniel had welcomed a Sheane into her Court - prisoner or not, he still wore the Gray and that had everyone in the entire Court on edge. She had also managed to earn him more paperwork by dealing with the accounts from the village to go to the family who would be raising the orphaned daughter of the Black Widow burning in Galarny. Not that he was opposed to the decision she made, but that was yet another excess of numbers and accounts he would have to go over before the week ended. It was looking as though he would have very little time to spend with his niece, something he was not pleased with. More than that, it meant she would be spending more time with Caoilainn White. Kean had no real issue with the woman. She was friendly and quite pleasant - he may have in fact liked her more than even that if it were not for the glaring issue with her caste. He could not trust a woman who bore that dangerous of a caste so completely with his niece.

But those were thoughts he had to push from his mind. Caoilainn was a woman his brother trusted - so when it came to Jade, Kean would trust her as well. She had never been anything but kind to him and the entire Devlin family, so there was no foundation outside of the innate fear of her caste. The Prince ran a hand through his hair, distracted by his thoughts from the numbers that he was calculating in regards to the funds needed to be raised for the small family. He was still calculating those numbers when he heard the door open to his office. Very few people would so easily waltz into a Red jeweled Steward's office in some other Territory, perhaps, but here it could be any number of people. With a family as large as the Devlin family, and each of them holding one another in such familiarity and regard, it could have been any of them in addition to other triangle members or even the Doyle clan. He hoped it was a servant with another pot of hot coffee for him - he was going to need it if he was going to get through this morning.

When he glanced up from the paper he was figuring the numbers on, his pen holding his place, he was surprised to see Shiv there. She was the youngest of his siblings, and it was not uncommon for the two to spend some time together, even if that was forfeit in recent days. Still, he had not been expecting her to show up in his office. Hadn't she been sent away to keep her safe? He could not recall if she had or if it had simply been something the family had considered when the dangers of Scelt became much more personal and real to the Court.

"Shiv!" There was surprise but also pleasure in his voice at the exclamation as he looked back down at his paper quickly, making a notation so he could once again find his place were he to be distracted longer than a moment with his baby sister. Kean was a family sort of man, and he would never have sent any of his siblings away, but particularly not his baby sister. He stood up with a smile on his lips, real pleasure shining from his eyes as he moved around the large, cluttered desk to wrap an arm around her affectionately. "This is a surprise. You haven't come with any pranks up your sleeve have you?" He sounded as though he was sincerely hoping she had not, but there was no mistaking the brief glimpse of excitement that crossed his features for just a moment.
