Appearance

Play By: Lais Ribiero
Distinguishing Features:

Karana’s skin and eyes carry hints of her Hayllian heritage, but that purity is tainted by the Raejian blood coursing through her veins. Her eyes are a dark brown but glow with a soft golden undertone that makes them stand out in darkness or by the light of the fire. She is gaunt, both from rigorous exercise and the constant use of her jewels, but her thin frame is still attractive. Karana’s posture is perfect unless she’s slinking or sneaking about the forest. During those times, she is reminiscent of a jungle cat stalking her prey.

Personality

Personality:

Karana Marzena knows something you don't know and that's the way that she likes it. Tradition dictates that Black Widows hold close the mysteries of the Twisted Kingdom and the future to stymie the ignorant and blindly ambitious who would pervert them for greater power and cause greater harm to Shalador.

She is utterly devoted to the mysticism of her Black Widow Caste and her study of the Twisted Kingdom. She is charged by Mother Night to read the webs of fate and help the people of Shalador reach their highest purpose. She takes her Caste as seriously as a Priestess does Mother Night’s communion. She does not she condone the training of the Black Widow caste without wringing deep concessions from the supplicant. She has killed “rogue” Black Widows in the past who have stepped outside the bounds of tradition. This requires keeping important knowledge out of the hands of those ill-prepared to use it to best effect. Challenging authority and poor thinkers is her duty and right as the Head of Coven in a Shalador where the Sisters have erupted. The jungle takes care of its own and now it falls to herself, the Coven, and the tribe to do take care of the jungle.

Uncovering secrets and lost knowledge drives Karana to travel the length and breadth of Shalador, meeting other tribes and learning whatever she can. She’s not afraid of a long journey or a difficult task. Nothing worth accomplishing is easy; if it is easy, then it isn't worthy.

The pursuit of knowledge requires a price. Karana has not found long-term companionship. She tells herself (whenever she ponders it) that any man she enjoys will die long before she can truly enjoy him. Her daughter's father passed on some thirty years ago of old age. Karana cared for him, but his death solidified her belief that a long-term relationship does not exist for her within Shalador. Since this jungle is where she will die, it means that she must give away something to earn the power she seeks.

She takes solace in her daughter, Tera, and in the presence of the Marzena tribe. Tera is also a Black Widow and blessed even further in the Darkness than her mother. Karana has been a difficult taskmistress in her training of Tara, making certain that the younger woman can take her place as the leader of the Black Web if ever Karana falls. While she is deeply proud of her daughter, she also demands much of her, leading to a bit of competition between both women to see who has mastered the intricacies of various bits of Craft.

Karana considers it her honor and duty to advise her tribemates. She's attended the birth of at least two of them and held the hand of another as she returned to the Darkness. Whenever a member of her tribe breaks into song while working, or the drums beat out an enchanting song during a hunt, Karana is the first to join in, bow at the ready, to aid her chosen people.

Likes:
  • 1. Finding lost knowledge: Karana has traveled all over Shalador seeking knowledge and artifacts from the ancient times. Sometimes she gives these to the Priestesses for safekeeping. Other times, she keeps particular items for herself for further study.

  • 2. Ambushes: Little in the world is more exciting than catching someone with their figurative (and sometimes literal) pants down. Fair fights are for children and soon-to-be dead fools. Karana does not consider this a commentary on her character or personal ability. In fact, the very fact that she can catch others on the back foot is a stronger commentary on their lack of preparedness. Those who know better, do better.

  • 3. Dancing: The way one dances informs so much about their personality. Karana’s body moves like a snake when she dances, smooth and sinuous movement mixed with sharp and sudden gyrations designed to draw eyes to her most attractive features. Her dancing during revels is one of many reasons that her bed does not remain empty unless she wishes it.

    Dislikes:

  • 1. Bigotry: Shalador’s heart is its people. All of them. It does not matter how one came to accept the jungles as their home, so long as they do. While she doesn't hear it among the Marzena, she's heard the whispers of disdain from many people (inside and outside Shalador) about mixed-breeds "polluting" the purity of each race. Fools espousing this belief in Karana's earshot are swiftly checked; those that continue to spout their foolishness tend to meet bad ends. Karana, if asked, would simply answer that said person’s demise is a boon to their society. Such poison shouldn't be spread through the jungle.

  • 2. Secrets: For all her belief in hoarding knowledge from those who would use it poorly, Karana doesn't believe that such applies to her. She has not only the responsibility but the right to learn every secret that she can find. When she senses information is being kept from her, she goes to great lengths to rectify the matter immediately.

  • 3. Storms: Karana’s father was a naval merchant who often took his family on his voyages across the oceans of Terreille. Her initial love to of the sea became a full-blown hatred of sailing when her father’s vessel was caught in the storm that brought her to Shalador. While she understand that fate brought her to the land where she was supposed to be, she has not forgiven the storm winds for nearly killing her in the process.

    Fears:

  • 1. Rian and Erisian are truly dead: While she didn't know Erisian Maboya as well as she might have liked, Karana counted Rian among her few friends. She has attempted to divine their whereabouts or final fates, but has found nothing to confirm or refute their destruction. Hiding the power of a Black Jewel is impossible by anyone save a Black Jewel, leading Karana to suspect that both women may truly have returned to the Darkness. If they have, then Shalador is in graver danger than anyone knows.

  • 2. Losing Her Sanity: Between her sojourns in the Twisted Kingdom and the help she provides others through Mind Healing, Karana is aware that several of her actions are not fully her own. The Head of the Coven cannot afford to have weakness or seem of unsound judgment. And yet she gains no relief from the ghosts in her head no matter what she does.

  • 3. Losing Power: Becoming the Head of the Coven had long been Karana’s dream, but the bigotry of previous leaders pushed that dream further and further out of reach until Karana formed the Black Web and took it back. Now, she sits as one of the most powerful Black Widows in Shalador. But she cannot rest on her laurels. Even now, she sees new challengers seeking her power. If she is not careful, her reign may be shorter than she anticipates.

    Craft Strengths:

  • 1. Tangled Webs:A fool only considers today. A wise leader ponders seven generations of consequences.

All Black Widows know the pathways leading to and through the Twisted Kingdom, navigating them to glean portents of the future. Karana is especially skilled in this navigation and is capable of finding threads that elude others. The scent of the Twisted Kingdom clings to her in the waking world, making her seem more ethereal than her fellow Widows.

  • 2. Shadow Building: “Never trust fully what you see. Life is artifice.

Karana’s shadows are so extremely lifelike that her enemies (and allies) are never fully certain whether or not they deal with her. Karana’s shadows engage four of the five senses, dissolving only when engaged physically.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • 1. Defensive Shielding: “The one who can die at any moment has more power than the one protected at all times.

Karana cannot shield herself from projectiles. Stealth and the ability to strike first preclude the need for defense. As such, Karana has forgone development of Defensive Shielding and chooses to live the thrill of hunts on a daily basis.

  • 2. Mind Healing: "Every time you touch someone, you take a piece of them with you. My flaw is that I take too much."

Karana focuses so deeply when enacting this skill that, when it's over, she sometimes takes away pieces of her subjects Mind with her. More than once, Karana has adapted the interests (or dislikes) of those she helps, unable to distinguish them from her own. Karana’s “ghosts” are a secret source of shame and fear for her, for she never knows just what she will pull from a given subject.

    History:

When asked of her past, Karana Marzena usually offers silence. But when she’s had a few cups of liquor and is more willing to speak, she relates this story...

Gaius Septimus Orsini was the seventh son of the seventh son of the Orsini, one of Hayll’s Hundred Families. The Hundred Families wielded power throughout Hayll, but Gaius understood from an early age that he was last in line for practically everything. When he did not receive a jewel for his Birthright Ceremony, he understood that he also would not ever hold important enough for an alliance of marriage. Seeing that his fate was tied to providing valuable service to his family, Gaius excelled as a salesman, trading in wine from his family’s vineyards along with fabric, cotton, wine and other items. Gaius success eventually allowed him to purchase a merchant vessel, the Dream Wind, and sail the high seas of Terreille to make his own fortune and fate apart from his family.

While docked in Raej, Caius met Khatera Abbasi, a Blood female who sought independence from her provincial family. She and Caius got along well from the first. Flirtation during his times in port eventually grew into a anticipation of seeing each other again, which blossomed into love. More than once Caius worried over the fact that he’d outlive Khatera hundreds of times over, but Khatera, or Tera, always reassured him that she had chosen him as much as he’d chosen her. Their love produced a daughter, Kira, who eventually gained the Summer Sky at her Birthright. Both parents were thrilled that their daughter earned a jewel, but it earned Kira no special favors.

Her father put her to work learning to trade, to evaluate the useful and discard the useless. Kira’s life, he reasoned, would be hard enough as a mixed-race woman. She would alleviate many of her issues by providing a useful service. Kira learned well, though the work didn’t excite her. What did excite her was the emergence of her snaketooth during her teenage years. The family returned to Raej and submitted Kira to the Coven of Kemet for training. Despite the odd looks she received from some of the populace, Kira excelled at learning Craft, especially where it came weaving Tangled Webs to see the future.

Her first vision was of a woman covered in face-paint and dark feathers, extending a hand to her.

She obtained her Green at her Offering Ceremony and considered how she might now use her talents to benefit herself. During her time on land, she’d grown to enjoy the faster pace of life in the city and she did not want to return to the confines of her father’s ship. Caius, however, considered living on a land a slow death of the soul and demanded that Kira return to the family business.

Bound by obligation to her family, Kira put aside her desires to stand beside her father.

Her father wanted to make one final run to Chaillot before the storm season settled upon the waters near Raej, as he had a lucrative contract he wanted to finish. Kira’s visions hinted at tragedy befalling the family if they left Raej during Autumn. She explained to him her visions and pleaded with him not to go, but Caius wouldn’t be swayed. They would dock and Chaillot and stay there the rest of the season, but they would make their final run.

The storms set upon their ship less than a day after they cast off.

Sometimes, the rains are hard enough that she remembers that night in great detail. The Dream Wind was tossed about like a small toy in the hands of angry child while Kira clung to the starboard side railing for dear life. Their weather witch was killed by a falling beam. Her mother was blown overboard into the dark water and Kira never saw her resurface. The Black Widow closed her eyes and waited for death, knowing that her chances of survival were nil.

Waking on an unfamiliar beach, it took three days for Kira to accept that her family was gone. No one else surfaced among the flotsam and debris of the ship. There was no sign of her father and Kira considered that well enough. Had she seen him, then, she would have killed him.

Stumbling further inland, the lush jungle and its scents nearly overwhelmed her senses. Further storms made her huddle against trees for warmth, only for the bright sun and the humidity to make her sweat every last drop of moisture she possessed. Hunger and thirst gnawed at her. When she found the brace of wild rabbit in the trap, she lunged for it, barely staving off her hunger long enough to start a fire and cook the small meal to her desire. It was the first, and last, free meal she ever received from the Marzena tribe.

She was placed with the Tribeless, where  she learned more about the land she’d come to. Shalador was beautiful and deadly, and the Black Widow felt a kinship with the people here that she’d not found elsewhere. Here, they did not consider her mixed heritage a disadvantage. In fact, they didn’t consider it at all. Some made fun of her for her Raejian clothing or her Hayllian hair style, but she eventually shed those customs to blend in. She helped her newfound friends learn when they were being cheated by outside merchants and how to spot the best items they produced.

One year and one day later, she received her test from the Matchmaker. She does not talk about what that test was. She only mentions that she passed it. The Marzena tribe accepted her not long after, with the Head of the Coven smiling in approval and extending her hand to her newest sister.

Kira Orsini died when her family’s boat sank for her father’s ambition.

Karana Marzena would live for herself and her tribemates and she would not allow them to be guided by the incompetent or the ill-prepared. When she turned sixty, but still appeared in her late twenties, she learned the truth of what it meant to be descended from the long-lived. It has been hard to watch friends and lovers pass on for over ninety years, but she has her daughter, Tera, to keep her company for the time being. It’s likely that she’ll outlive even her daughter and sister among the Black Widows, but Karana now understands that she must retain perspective in all things. No one is eternal, though many things seem that way. Even the dark days of Shalador, with the sisters waking, the tribes in disarray, and the death of the Council of Elders are fleeting. She will look back upon all of this some day and tell her children and grandchildren of the story of how Shalador rose from the fire renewed...or burned to ashes from greed and lack of cooperation among the tribes.

No matter how the story ends, someone must tell it.

    That someone will be her.

    Character in Play:

All is progressing as I have foreseen it.

The antechamber of the cave was dank and dim, but not silent. A river ran beneath it, so the flowing water could be heard beneath the soft rumbling of the land that had become prevalent ever since Elder Sister had woken. The skies were dark now and the land smelled of fire and ashes, but this cave remained as a testament to all that Shalador once was and might be again if the the tribes stood together instead of pulled themselves apart with infighting and power-mongering.

Karana’s dress itched and she longed to throw it off and sink deeper into the power afforded by her sisters and the Twisted Kingdom. Even now as she sat with her five sisters in a circle around a large stone marked with sigils drawn in the blood of each woman, Karana saw the future shaping and reshaping itself before her eyes. Unlike her sisters, who sat weaving their own Tangled Webs into hers to increase the potency of their visions, Karana stood a good chance of surviving long enough to pay the Price for the actions she’d take today. Already she’d seen a century; the Hayllian blood gifted by her father would let her see many more if the Darkness did not call her home first.

Dark days lay ahead for the children of Shalador, and all of Terreille;  not all would survive them. The Council of Elders, save one, were already dead. Their loss was saddening, and yet their deaths would save thousands of others. The better deal was apparent in that exchange. Every vision she’d seen, every bit of the future she’d glimpsed made Karana certain of only one thing as she sat in the darkness, waiting for her guest to arrive:

    Do not wait. Act

    Drip.

    Drip.

    Drip.

    Drip.

The drops of water fell from the ceiling, landing atop her head. Karana’s dress was now not only itched, but was wet besides. She did not move, though. A faint tingling sensation ran from the base of her spine to the base of her skull, hinting that the security web she’d set at the mouth of the cave had been tripped.

    Her guest had arrived.

Divada Otso, Head of the Hourglass Coven, stepped into antechamber and sighted the group of rogues calling themselves the Sisterhood of the Black Web. The Coven within the Coven. Lady Divada’s Sapphire jewel of rank glowed softly and Witchlight illuminated herself and her sisters. Divada looked at them with thinly veiled malice. Isandra, Aida, Luna, Anda, and Dara all rose from their places, but Karana remained unmoving, whispering softly to herself.

Karana Marzena, you have defied the Coven for the final time.” the old crone said, moving forward. She conjured her bone-knife from her psychic cabinet and approached her fellow Black Widow, the anathema that would ruin the Coven in the decades to come, were she allowed to live. Divada believed that rulership of the Coven was meant to pass from time to time, not to be held by one of the long-lived, or even one of their blood.

You will not lead this Coven while I live. But I understand now that we cannot both live in Shalador together. I will slay you before you can slay me. Return to the Darkness and pray that Mother Night judges you fairly.

Divada drove her dagger into Karana’s back. Karana sputtered, coughed...and melted.

Divada didn’t sense Karana as she stepped from the shadows behind her and drove her own dagger into Divada’s back. For good measure, she slit the old woman’s throat before letting her body fall to the ground.

The Head of the Coven was dead. Converting or destroying her supporters would take less time than this.

Gather as much of her blood as you can, Sisters. We will use every drop in the days and weeks to come.” Karana said.

    It was true.

All progressed as she had foreseen.
