Personality

Personality:
No one would argue that Juliet has led a somewhat sheltered life. She has always been a free thinker and a bit of an idealist, believing that deep down people are good at heart, and the evil in the world is due to the few who hunger for power or money. Her idyllic childhood in a middle class family in a prosperous section of Chaillot and comfortable adult life as a moderately successful architect did nothing to dissuade her from her liberal beliefs over the years.

She was known for participating in social movements that upheld the basic rights of all people, be them Light or Dark jeweled, or even Landen. To her mind, the Darker jeweled amongst the Blood in Chaillot were being unjustly discriminated against due to the fear and distrust people have had ever since the Purge. They especially deserved everyone's compassion and understanding for the burdens the weight of their dark jewels caused them to bear.  The Witch is tightly grounded and thoughtful in all her actions, using logic and solid factual evidence to outline her beliefs when confronted.

Over time, Juliet became more active and more vocal about her beliefs, encouraging others to spread the gospel of equality. She didn't just pay lipservice to her beliefs, she embodied them, hoping her lifestyle would set the standard for how Chaillot would come to treat its citizens. Juliet's views were extremely unpopular, and her advocacy for the Dark Jeweled people of Chaillot eventually brought her to the attention of the rulers. The majority of the aristos in Chaillot not only didn't agree with Juliet's campaign, they wanted to silence it. She was soon arrested and sentenced to the salt mines of Pruul.

Three years in to her imprisonment, the hardships of life in the mines have made Juliet struggle to hold on to her beliefs in the true nature of people. She has witnessed horrors committed against the bodies and souls of her fellow inmates that have made her question if her memories of her previous life were just some strange fantasy concocted out of heat and salt to compensate for the hollow shadow-life she was living now. Sometimes, late at night when she has a precious moment of quiet, she tells herself that she still believes in the human spirit. It is something more tangible to her than the religion of the Blood, and something she could have believed back in Chaillot.

Juliet has learned to keep her head down and not draw attention to herself in the mines, and she still bears the scars from learning this hard fact. The guards seem to want any excuse to abuse the prisoners, and Juliet does not want to be made an example of yet again. She does not let this stop her from being involved with other prisoners, still craving the social contact she desperately needs to keep her sanity in this house of horrors, for if she gave in to the anger and hatred she has developed towards the guards, she fears that she would become as callous and violent as her captors.

Juliet's insistence on retaining some of her own humanity and value for human life helped her find her place as a person of understanding and acceptance for her fellow prisoners and within the culture and hierarchy of the mines. She has become the steadfast companion of Queen Erisian, both as a supportive, compassionate friend and an understanding and gentle lover. She is the one person who is not shocked or put off by Erisian's quirks or moods, adapting to her Queen's needs readily from a place of deep understanding of the burdens she must be bearing as such a Dark Jeweled being.

Likes:
  • Debates - Juliet likes to argue with people. She's an incorrigible question-asker; for a while debates were less appealing, what with The Mines Happening and all. She felt too uncertain to ask as many questions as she would have usually. Six years and adoption into a new people has left her feeling safe enough to not just ask questions, but argue about them too.
  • The thrill of learning a new skill - It's not enough to just learn facts. Juliet wants to get in there up to the elbows with both hands. The newer a skill, the further from her experience it is, the more she wants to get good at it. The moment she has it down, she's ready to move on: a Jane of all trades but a master of none of them.
  • Touch - Juliet is a naturally tactile person. She like to touch things, because they feel good beneath her hands, and she likes to touch people, because she likes them. She collects things of particularly pleasing texture, and enjoys being in the personal space of people she particularly likes. The more she likes you, the more she wants to touch you.
Dislikes:
  • Snakes - So Erisian keeps snakes, right? It's probably Juliet's least favorite thing about her. She's not scared of them anymore, because Erisian helped her learn how not to be, but like, no. They move in such an unnatural way. Juliet doesn't go out of her way to avoid snakes, but she's definitely not going to go waltzing through a pit of them, and looking at them makes her fairly queasy.
  • Public nudity - Yeah yeah, bodies are art, but they're personal art. She doesn't care if other people are naked around her, because in the mines there was no time for that sort of nonsense concern. But Juliet considers the sight of her naked form a gift for herself and her lovers and maybe a Healer if there's no other choice.
  • Fighting - She likes to learn new things, true, and that includes combat (things like archery). But she really doesn't anticipate ever needing to use it, and finds getting mussed up and rolling around in the dirt to be a boring and uncomfortable pastime. She has better things to do than make people shed their own personal blood.
Fears:
  • Confinement - Oh, not small spaces. Those don't bother her. But being tied up (to anything) or blindfolded or gagged (even by a lover or someone she deeply, truly trusts) makes Juliet break into a cold sweat. No bondage for this witch, thanks much.
  • Dying without making a difference - Juliet still longs to make changes that benefit everyone around her. She doesn't necessarily crave a place in the history books so much as she craves the certain kind of immortality that comes with making concrete improvements to the lives of those around her. Right now, she feels she hasn't changed or improved nearly enough of the world to be able to die with no regrets.
  • Being unnecessary - Juliet knows Erisian loves her. But she looks at the Court around her dear Lady Mad and she sees Dark Jewels, important castes, powerful destinies. Fariq is a bandit king. Lyra is a fierce fighter. Akan is a Red-Jeweled Warlord Prince. Karlissa, where-ever she's gone, is an Ebon Gray Black Widow. She is an ant among titans, and she knows it. What use is there for someone as boring and normal as a Tiger-Eye architect?
Craft Strengths:
  • Controlling temperature: since childhood Juliet has had the ability to change the ambient temperature of the room she was in to her preference. As she grew older and more practiced, she could narrow the focus to a much smaller and potentially more intense placement. She frequently uses this skill during massage, adding heat to soothe or cold to reduce inflammation as needed. In the mines, she only has the ability to do this in small bursts due to the poor nutrition and lack of rest.
  • Psychic barrier maintenance - A skill that came quite useful in the mines. Juliet has very strong inner barriers, especially for her Jewel strength. They're not unbreakable, but her very organized mind and powerful awareness of self allow her to weather psychic attacks that stronger Jewels would shatter under.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Probing food and drink: A skill that has always eluded Juliet, she either has to trust that the food and drink she has been given contains nothing harmful, or find another person she trusts to probe it for her. She is so embarrassed by this weakness that she just accepts the risks, making her decisions based on observation and intuition instead while keeping her fingers crossed that her roll of the dice will keep her from harm.
  • Mediation Craft - Not a day goes by where Juliet doesn't wish she was good at this Craft. Yeah, arguments can be fun, but when it's REALLY important she REALLY wishes that her Craft could just like. Make the thing do. Words aren't always enough, not in this life. But nope. N o p e.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Bernadette Marche, 69, White to Rose Witch
Father: Alain Marche, 70, Yellow to Tiger Eye Prince
Daughter: Yllian Maboya, 1, Healer

History:
Born in the suburbs of the capital of Touleans, Juliet grew up fast and bright. Her performance in school bought her a scholarship to a boarding school in the capital proper, where she did her parents proud and developed a keen sense for right and wrong. Having seen how cruel her aristo classmates could be, young Juliet took it upon herself to stand up for her less fortunate peers. While she was no aristo herself, she was high enough in socioeconomic class to have otherwise made herself a non-target until she forcibly involved herself. The teasing that was crushing her poorer classmates only seemed to drive Juliet to thrive, and she graduated near the top of her class. That enabled her to secure a lucrative apprenticeship with another graduate of her school.

By the time she was 24, she was working as an architect in her own right, though she hadn't quite got her own firm off the ground yet. Still, she had a good income and lived comfortably, which left her a lot of time to reflect on the world around her. She could see in the people she knew that those few rare Dark Jewels born in Chaillot had a terrible time. She could see landens and Jeweless Blood being ground into the dirt by the same aristo morons she'd spent her school years arguing with. It couldn't be borne; it struck against everything she believed in at her core. So she used her connections, her friends, her talents to work to make things better.

It took years, years and years and years, but she managed to network enough to help the people who needed her. She found jobs for the jobless, homes for the homeless, and advocated before Queens for those who couldn't do it on their own. Her work brought her notoriety among the aristos and a reputation for benevolence among the people she helped. Word spread, not just where she wanted it heard, but to the sort of people who had the political power that might make an uppity witch disappear.

When she was thirty-nine, she grew frustrated with the lack of concrete physical change. She could help a few people, sure, but her resources weren't growing enough to keep up with the demand. It rankled that she had to choose from among the needy to find the neediest, the most helpless, when all of them were deserving of help. So she started to agitate more, harder, utilizing dirtier tactics than before.

She went from being a nuisance to being a concrete threat, and that was when the aristos took her down. They framed her for building collapses that had nothing to do with her work or her firm, and for inciting a riot that ended in the maiming of a member of the Touleans Province Court. They arrested her, tried her, and exiled her. Rather than sending her outside the Territory and leave her there as was custom, a particularly unscrupulous aristo arranged to have her sold to the salt mines of Pruul. She'd been prepared to be left in Raej with nothing but the clothes on her back. She wasn't prepared to be bound, gagged, and shipped in a tiny box to a humid salt mine.

Though the urge to give up was strong, Juliet persevered. She kept her chin up and her shoulders back, and she did what she could to make life livable for those around her. That indomitable spirit brought her to the attention of Erisian, the hidden Black Jeweled Priestess Queen. She was brought into the fold, a valuable stabilizing influence that persisted past their freedom in Juliet's forty-second year. She stayed with Erisian until the Court was prepared to return to Shalador, and then they all left together.

In Shalador, Juliet had none of her Chaillotan connections. Returning to her home territory was out of the question; even though the Queen who had exiled her was long dead, she was still an exile and a traitor to the Court. So she started from the bottom, using her intelligence and her empathy to win a place in the Mitzi tribe, known for its mediators. Even in Shalador, there is a need for architects, and Juliet put considerable energy into learning the local styles and over the last three years has established herself as a reputable and reliable artisan. She had enough custom to consider taking on an apprentice of her own... but then the volcanoes began to awaken.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:
Eris had been gone for a week now. Juliet had let herself have the first day to take a deep breath and adjust to the knowledge that her lover would be gone for a time, but on the second day she'd gotten out of bed, done her hair, and gone to work. There were homes to be built, trees to be examined for suitability, meetings with tribal elders to be arranged. Today had been intended for a visit to a work site to assess some sort of rot problem, but the sudden and heavy downpour had prevented all but the most determined of inspectors. Juliet did not work with the most determined inspectors, and so she had chosen to stay home.

In the space she did not share with Erisian, she had old converted wine racks full of plans and scrolls of record. There were framed images leaning against the walls: paintings and plans, things she'd acquired by reaching out to the right person at the right time. Among the pieces were the original plans for the first home she'd built at her own firm in Chaillot, an item acquired only two years ago from a Mitzi tribe trader who had seen it up for auction. Honestly, Juliet was surprised it hadn't been burned. Still, she was glad to have a little piece of home, a little reminder of what she'd lost.

She stood to lose more now. Rain pounded sharp against the windowpane, and Juliet pressed a palm against its coolness. The Court had gone, leaving her behind. Eris had clasped Juliet's hands in her own: The only way I can dare this is if I know you will survive. Pretty words, but Erisian would have dared it regardless. Mother Night demanded it of her, and what Juliet lacked in spirituality was more than made up for in the woman she loved. No, it wasn't to protect her. Juliet had been left behind because she was useless.

Her right ring finger, adorned by her Tiger-Eye in a gold setting, twitched at the thought. Useless, for this endeavor. Against the earthly might of a volcano, what was one casteless witch? She hadn't said that she didn't know that she would survive not knowing that Erisian was all right. She had kissed her love goodbye and let her go, because Mother Night--the goddess that Juliet didn't even believe in--had demanded it.

Juliet had lived through worse. She would survive. And Erisian would come home. She had to. Not because Juliet had some special caste or foreknowledge. No. Nothing so precious.

Erisian would come home because Juliet demanded it.

Looking at her old profile, Juliet never got a cut/uncut roll on her jewels; could I get those?

Give me the light jeweled witch who the mines could hold but never break.

AKA all Erisian mentions okayed.
mostly i am an absentee parent to all my fictional creations.
sometimes i have inappropriate public reactions by which i am later mortified.
