The Basics

Character Name: Jasper al-Situla
Nicknames: Jax
Age and Birth Year: 30, born 163AP
Race: 1/2 Long Lived (Eyrien), 1/4 Pruulian, 1/4 Dena Nehelen
Caste: Prince
Birth Territory: Pruul
Home Territory: Pruul

Birthright Jewel: Uncut Opal
Offering Jewel: Uncut Red

Role: Escort
Faction: Aubdina

Appearance

Play By: James McAvoy
Distinguishing Features: Jasper has the dark hair and wings of an Eyrien, but the lighter skin and blue eyes of the blood of Dena Nehele in his veins. Even though he really doesn't look nearly as Pruulian as he would like to, he makes up for it by dressing the part, and long years under the sun have tanned his naturally lighter skin to about average for the Territory. No one, looking at him and the Khanjar at his belt, would have trouble believing that he is a creature of the desert.

Personality

Personality:
Jasper is a Prince to his core. Charming, organized, eloquent, fierce. His devotion to the Aubdina and to those he counts as friends and family is absolute, and he would give his life in a heartbeat for them. While his birth brought much grief to his family, his own life has been blessedly devoid of any major trauma, leaving him with an unbroken ability to laugh and be merry when duty allows. When it doesn’t, Jasper learned the value of silence from his grandfather and how to always be one step ahead and prepared for the unexpected from his grandmother.

His half-Eyrien blood brought with it a certain rash, run-headlong-into-things attitude, especially when his passions are riding him. He is forever grateful he was not born a Warlord Prince because the times when he lost his temper or acted without thinking are usually the moments in his life he regrets the most. These tendencies have only gotten harder to control as he descended to the Red. His temper became more hairline, his lust for life and women went from something he could control to something that sometimes controlled him, and it took years of training and practice to wrestle it back. His mentor built in outlets for that restless energy and intensity into his weekly schedule of training, making sure he had time to unleash the full brunt of his pent-up power and emotions in safe and healthy ways, and Jasper has continued this practice even after leaving Dar-el-Salaam.

Growing up around Priestesses made Jasper a deeply devout person. He finds great peace and solace in Communion, and the silence of standing in the Abyss is mesmerizing. He believes that Mother Night has a plan for him and that he was given his Red Jewel for a purpose. He is particularly reverent towards those women who have taken the Trials of the Aub and come through to bring water to the sands of Pruul. They are magic to Jasper, and worthy of every honor no matter their personal temperament. Those who disrespect an Aubdina in his presence will receive a death-glare at best, and more likely a tongue-lashing worthy of his Sapphire Jeweled grandmother.

Likes:
  • Priestesses: His grandmother was an Aubdina and was the center of Jasper's life from the moment he was born. He was raised in and around Priestesses and has always had a deep love and reverence for the Caste and their special place in Pruul. He never even considered a path other an becoming the bloodsworn of an Aubdina.
  • Blood Society: He loves the rules, protocols, and niceties of Blood Society. He believes it is right that males serve. It is an honor to protect, a pleasure to pamper, and the place of every male to care for the females in their lives.
  • Weapon Mastery: He wears the Red, but he is Pruulian to his bones. Jasper understands that in the desert all men are equal, and Jewel will not protect his charge. Because of this Jasper has spent most of his life mastering the use of his two primary weapons: his Khanjar and the spear. He prefers the latter to the former since it gives him range and versatility, but he has tried not to let his preferences keep him from studying a whole range of fighting styles.

    Dislikes:
  • Eyriens: He has a lot of conflicting feelings about his wings. He loves to fly, loves the freedom and power it gives him but knows without a doubt that it was his wings that killed his mother. The unnamed Eyrien male who fathered him set Jasper up for a life of always being treated with suspicion, and he has a general distaste for the whole Territory.
  • Being Outmatched: He wears the Red, has spent his entire life training to be a warrior, and yet that scrawny asshole, Aahad, still manages to beat him on occasion. That they inevitably go drinking later and are good friends makes this bearable. With others, Jasper gets quite bitter when he feels like he's losing.
  • Lack of a Plan: Jasper likes to be prepared for things. He is not the sort to run headlong into trouble, but rather consider it from every angle and formulate a strategy. When those plans fall apart or he doesn't have time to make one, it causes him great annoyance and a bit of anxiety.

    Fears:
  • Failing his charge: He knows he is not responsible for his grandmother's death. She was old, and returned to the Darkness in peace. But for a bloodsworn to outlive one charge is hard, two would be heartbreaking. Jasper has every intention that next time, it will be for life, which limits the number of Aubdina he can serve to those who have long-lived blood in their veins.
  • Sandstorms: He once almost got caught in one while flying, and the fear of both landing with Craft in an area with Worms and the terror of the raging sand have made him apprehensive of these dangerous weather patterns. He tries to always be prepared for them and is extra cautious when planning desert crossings to account for the days it sometimes takes to recover from one.
  • Darker Jewels: Jax has never met anyone who wore something darker than the Red, and doesn't want to. He is comfortable as the most powerful person in any room and finds that his temper tends to be hairline even in the company of the few that match his Jewel.

    Craft Strengths:
  • Shields: Protecting his charge is his primary focus, and because of this, shields are an essential piece. His Red means that any time when Craft is safe to use, anyone under his protection has a very high chance of staying alive.
  • Flight Craft: He knows the dangers of going to ground in the desert, and also the benefits of being able to get himself and his charge into the air fast. He has spent long years pushing his body and his Red hard to be able to stay aloft longer, and with more weight than just his own body.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Passing Through Objects: Jax has just never mastered this. He always snags his clothes or himself and it's never quiet or graceful, and sometimes takes a bit of the wall with him. If he really needs to get through something, he can always blast through with brute force. Stupid walls...
  • Exploiting Weakness: For all that his mentors and friends have tried to drum this into Jasper, when the heat of combat comes over him, he just doesn't think the way he should. All the poise and confidence and keen intellect get eaten up in his anger and thirst for victory. It's earned him many a trip to the Healer during his training, and several very embarrassing losses in his skirmishes with Aahad.

    Life Story

    Family:
Grandmother: Taraneh al-Situla, Opal - Sapphire Priestess (Aubdina)
Grandfather: Mahim al-Situla, Tiger Eye - Summer Sky Prince
Mother: Zarine al-Situla, Rose - Summer Sky Black Widow
Bio-Father: Name Unknown, Summer Sky - Purple Dusk Warlord Prince
Mentor: Dalir ibn Aub, Summer Sky - Purple Dusk Warlord, 51, born 142AP

    History:

Jasper’s story began long before his birth. Taraneh al-Situla, a Sapphire Jeweled Priestess, undertook the Trials of the Aubdina and passed after three days of fighting for her life and her people. She underwent all the training that was proper and required and returned to the Situla Tribe of her birth.

Her bloodsworn was a solemn older man who viewed her as a daughter. One day they were separated from their Tribe in a bandit raid. Her bloodsworn got her away, as was his primary objective, but took an arrow to the back. They were near the northern border of Pruul and those traveling with Taraneh had all been killed or taken. Alone, she set out towards where she knew the nearest seasonal camp of the Situla was. She could make water for herself and knew the desert as well as any Pruulian could, so she would have made it there just fine if not for a single scorpion.

Delirious, she did not remember the next few days, only that when she opened her eyes she was camped with her people, and a beautiful man with blue eyes stared down at her. Her Tribe said that he found her in the desert, and brought her to them. He never said what his name was, or how he had ended up here, although in later years he admitted that he left his home Territory for less than idyllic reasons. Still, he had saved an Aubdina, and the water debt he was owed for that, paired with the love that grew between them as he helped her recover, meant that when they married a year later, he happily took the name Mahim al-Situla (first name means ‘blessing’), and swore himself as her guardian and defender from that moment until his last.

They had a daughter, Zarine, who grew to be a Black Widow, and they could not have been prouder of her. Zarine’s gift was foretelling the future, and one day she came to her parents and said that she had to go to Onn for the next festival. When they asked her why she admitted that she had seen a child in her webs, one with eyes like hers and Mahim’s, and Taraneh’s dark hair, who stood tall and proud beside another Water Priestess.

“I don’t know who she is, mother, but I think she’s important, and I think my son will one day be for her what father is for you.”

So Zarine went and followed her visions to a square where people danced and sang and she saw a man there, the one with beautiful golden eyes and ebony hair that her Tangled Webs had told her needed to be this particular son's father. They crashed together like thunderheads in a storm, again and again throughout the night. They spoke little, though she told him of her life among the dunes and he spoke of how he stared up into the sky and listened to the wind blow over Onn. He didn't tell her this, but he too was on a mission. He had been born not in Dhemlan or Terrille as Zarine guessed but in the high mountains of Askavi. Born with atrophied wings that had to be removed at birth, he had been cast out of the land of his birth by a family ashamed of his appearance and traveled far and wide around the Realm to try to find some way of going back. He had come to Pruul hoping to learn more about Hammam, to see if that, perhaps, would be a weapon great enough that his homeland would accept him back even without his wings. He didn't share any of this with the witch who rode him though, far too enthralled to question his luck in this dark desert beauty. In the morning, Zarine pressed a kiss to his sleeping brow and left without a word.

The next nine months were filled with excitement and anticipation, until the night of the birth, when Zarine labored and labored and as the sun crested, held a baby boy with shining black wings in her arms for only an hour before blood-loss returned her to the Darkness. The new grandparents mourned their only child and wondered how, in all her webs, she had not seen the wings that killed her, or that the man she had traveled so far to find had been one of those Eyriens, even though he lacked the wings, that had caused so much harm to the world.

Still, the baby was half their daughter’s, and Taraneh and Mahim set about to raising him the way his mother would have wanted. Chasing after a little winged boy was hard work, but Mahim, in particular, took great delight in playing with the child. Jasper was a hyper but thoughtful child, and his grandfather was his hero. He wanted to grow up to be just like him, and considering the visions their daughter had seen of his future, his grandparents encouraged this.

When he came away from his Birthright with an Opal, Taraneh decided it was time to move the family to Dar-el-Salaam. She wanted Jasper to learn how to be the Bloodsworn guardian of an Aubdina one day, and she was ready to begin teaching the next generation as well.

Throughout his childhood and his time at Dar-el-Salaam, Jasper’s was on and off again friends with the slightly older Aahad al-Situla. Aahad’s oddities and Jasper’s wings meant they were often the odd ones out of any social situation. This friendship was at its strongest while they both lived and studied at Dar-el-Salaam. Jasper had imagined a future where Aahad and Jasper could make a real impact on the Territory, but that dream crumbled when Aahad left Dar-el-Salaam. A few years younger than his friend, Jasper grumbled about this for months, then set about his studies in fighting and defense with renewed vigor, under the tutelage of his grandfather and his mentor, Dalir.

Jasper made his Offering at twenty and came away with the Red. It took a few more years of training before he was comfortable with the new depth of his power, and in those years several young Aubdina approached him to ask to be their escorts. Each time he politely refused, knowing that his longer lifespan meant that if he wanted to find someone he could swear his whole life to, the pool was remarkably small.

Then his grandfather died. It was a stroke of the brain, the Healer said, and that he didn’t suffer. His grandmother did, though, and declared that she wanted to return to the Situla, to her people, for a time. Unable to leave Dar-el-Salaam without an escort, Jasper offered to fill his grandfather’s role.

Their journey back to her people took a long time, as she was getting old, but Jasper never hurried her. But his time as her escort was not to last long. She had loved her husband dearly, and when a fever took her a few years later, she did not fight hard against it. On her deathbed, she told him of the visions Jasper’s mother had shared and encouraged him to find the Aubdina he had been born to protect. Aahad was there for Taraneh's funeral, the two mending much that had been broken between them and, heartsick, Jasper returned to the quiet of Dar-el-Salaam for a time to grieve. Only after he had taken the time to truly remember and honor the grandparents who had raised him, did he emerge back out into the world, determined, this time, to find an Aubdina who he could be with for the rest of his days, and fulfill his destiny in a changing world.

    Show Us What You've Got

    Character in Play:
Jasper stretched his wings to catch the evening breeze and stared down at the city of Onn. Somewhere, in all of this mess of houses, markets and crowds was the witch he was looking for. Azar had been ranting about the Mineborn Aubdina enough to make the walls of Dar-el-Salaam rattle for long enough that Jasper almost felt as if he knew this Hadjara, even though they had managed not to cross paths in her stay at the Peaceful Place. A stay that had been cut terribly short, in Jasper’s opinion, considering the young Aubdina, from what rumor said, would live centuries. He would keep those opinions to himself though, at least until he met her.

But where was she? And was she even the one his mother had seen in her Tangled Webs. Not for the first time the Red Jeweled Prince was saddened that he had never had the chance to speak to the woman who had given her life for his. What might she have taught him about the world and about the place she had seen for him in it? It was frustrating to be a child born of prophecy and not have a fucking clue what the prophecy was about!

Other than that there was a Priestess who needed him.

His eyes roved over the city once more, black wings folding back close to his back lest they catch the breeze and tempt him into soaring free instead of focusing on his mission here. The Temple would be the place to start. She was a Priestess, and Jax had lived his entire life surrounded by women of that Caste. Even if she did not work at the Temple, surely someone there would be able to tell Jasper where it was that she lived and served the Darkness. It was evening though, and the sun setting. Perhaps he should find a place to stay for the night and begin his search tomorrow. He was dusty from travel, even over the relatively short distance from the Sapphire Wind to Onn. There had been plenty of times in his childhood that he had cursed his wings, but they certainly did give him the freedom of speed that his Red alone would not have.

Yes. Tonight he would wash and rest, perhaps inquire as to the gossip around town, and tomorrow… tomorrow he would find this Hadjara that Azar so wanted, and see what all the fuss was about.

Side note: This character was in the keep before Kenna's Long Lived ban in Pruul. As per her directions I have been able to complete him as is. Original Wanted Add included requirement for 1/2 long-lived and I have done everything I can to justify this. Please let me know if more is needed.
