Appearance

Play By: Daiane Sodré

Distinguishing Features: Though she has flecks of gold in her eyes, Izel does not have the wings that her mother was blessed with. It is said that she looks more like her father than mother, the gold in her green eyes and darker almost black hair the impact of her mother’s dual bloodlines. Izel’s features are beautiful and pleasing but one would be remiss to forget what a deadly weapon her mind and body are. Lean corded muscle is clearly visible to those who pay attention to detail. Her voice is melodic, a gift passed on from her father.

Personality

Personality:

Izel has spent nearly two lifetimes among the warrior women of the Felidae and it shaped her into a strong, unyielding woman. She's got a streak of stubbornness as wide as Shalador and an iron will to work hard as hard as the mountains that surround her home. As the leader of the woman named after the deadly forest felines, she’s cunning, deadly, and beautiful, a truly dangerous mix.

A warrior's heart, she channels her desire to protect Shalador and Shalador’s people into her leadership and training. As a girl she was a daredevil, taking risks and urging battle for the sake of the adrenaline rush. Wisdom of years and strong teaching from her mentor and best friend beat most of that out of her. Still, a corner of her heart relishes the thrill of conflict, so long as the justification is reasonable.

Due to her years spent as leader, Izel has a sharp mind for dealing with people. Though she is not able to rely on Emotional Craft, she has a sharp gaze and her father’s training when she was a child. She is not perfect and can be wrong like any other but she is practiced at dealing with the people of Shalador, not just her Black Widow sisters and brothers.

Another facet of her leadership is her willingness to see her decisions through. Though she knows that failure is an option, Izel stubbornly works an idea out until it is clearly impossible. Bullheaded, she can listen to advice but, if she really believes she is right, she will force her opinion down the throats of those around her.

While she is always striving to do good for Shalador, Izel is willing to get her hands dirty to see that change. She is pragmatic and if the ends justify the means, she will make those tough calls. A woman who is devoted to a land and people, she doesn’t consider the spiritual costs. To Izel, the Darkness’ approval or disapproval means far less than her mother or her sister's approval.

Among her sisters in the Felidae and within the Coven, Izel can lay down the burdens of her leadership and expectations. In merely social settings she laughs at jokes and enjoys herself, her wit scathing but eliciting laughter as well. Alone she enjoys books though she rarely reads. Izel is the type that is more likely to enjoy a leisurely swim or a hike than to sit still and do anything for a long period of time.

Her temper and her sexual desires are her greatest stumbling blocks. Training hard helps her funnel anger into energy. As for her desires, she is Felidae sworn and tradition dictates that it is frowned upon to form relationships. Though there are men ready to service the Felidae, Izel is one of the Black Widows who partakes most infrequently.

An extrovert at heart, Izel is quick to embrace new friends and companions and fears that sex will lead to attachment. As the leader of the Felidae, she expects herself to be the example that every Felidae should look up to. Though that does mean her temper edges towards anger more easily, Izel is relentless in her training and activity, burning away the excess emotions she would rather ignore.

Though Izel can be demanding and exacting, she does so out of a place of warmth. She believes that those who join the Felidae can be powerful warriors and pushes them towards that. Her reputation for being harsh is tempered by her willingness to work alongside a person until they understand her position or technique. Now, as she throws herself onto the center stage of Shalador, Izel is steeled by her determination.

She will make people work together. Or she will die trying.

Likes:
  • Running barefoot. She can feel the shape of the ground through her feet when they are not bound by leather. In the deepest parts of Shalador’s forests and holy places, there is almost a sense that she can feel the land through her feet. Remaining stealthy is easier when she can feel the brittle twig beneath her foot or the wet sensation of decay. The feel that she is almost connected to the earth, that Shalador accepts her and claims her.
  • Reading letters from home. Her mother writes her frequently, as well as some of Izel’s childhood friends. She has little free time so Izel is rarely home. Though she returns for the Festival of the Dead and Winsol, she misses her family and Tribe. Izel, for all her strength, cherishes the embrace of her mother and the feeling that nothing can harm her so long as her mother is near. She knows it is untrue but her love for her mother is one of her greatest strengths. To make that woman proud, Izel strives to be a better person than she was the day before.
  • Training. She is not the leader of the Felidae because she is powerful in her Jewels, though it did play a part in her appointment. Izel is the leader because she is powerful in her will and dedication. She rises before dawn, waking her sisters for training. Izel pushes her sisters harder, grinning with almost a sense of madness as they battle with daggers, bows or Craft. The satisfaction of seeing her Felidae sisters glaring at her underneath sweat matted hair is only one of the many reasons she thrives as the leader of the Felidae.
Dislikes:
  • Offending, embarrassing or hurting her mother. Izel’s love for her mother is almost as great as her love for Shalador and the land’s sacred beauty. The woman who raised her is a powerful woman, both in personality and willpower. Since her youth, Izel has guided herself with the question of if her mother would approve of her actions or not. Though she is grown, she holds a small measure of regret when she chooses a path that would bring her mother’s displeasure.
  • Lying. Others lie, that is a matter of life. Izel though tries to her utmost to be honest and forthright. That does not stop her from lying when she deems the situation necessary. Though she dislikes the lies that may come from her mouth, she knows that there is a good chance she will be believed, the daughter of Shalador’s most diplomatic tribe.
  • Torrential Rains. Izel loves a fresh spring rain but she does not like the flood of rains that occur in the summer, bringing flooding to the rivers and preventing almost all outdoor activity. Worse yet, sometimes her assignment has her protecting one of the women’s sacred places, out in the rains that even cause the creatures of the forest to hole up and wait out the storms. Shielded so she doesn’t become a drenched cat, the rains make her more and more surly as time goes on.
Fears:
  • Destruction of Shalador. Izel is bound to the land of her birth by blood, sweat and tears (though many of them happy tears). The land is her heart and the only child she has. As destruction beacons, Izel only fights harder against a future she won’t abide.
  • The Cost. The cost of her break of tradition is bound to be high. By taking the Felidae from a subservient role and propelling all the Territory’s Black Widows into the spotlight, she has shaken social norms and broken unwritten laws. Shalador lives by tradition and Izel threw her actions in the face of that tradition. At night, she imagines she can feel the eyes of those in the future if they survive to meet it, and their judgement will be heavy indeed.
  • Losing the respect of her sisters. The Felidae is her life, that which she is most committed to. Izel is not a natural people pleaser but she does work to earn the respect of her sisters. She strives to be a Black Widow and Felidae that is exemplary. To lose that would be a painful blow indeed.
Craft Strengths:
  • Offensive Webs. As both warrior and Black Widow, Izel strives with her sisters to develop webs that utilize the cunning and crafty nature of the Black Widow with their warrior hearts. Her webs are set up to be more of those illusions, of her power pushing away or attempting to break through Shields. Some of her webs are designed to kill but Izel values life so most of her tricks are intended to leave her opponent alive. If she must take a life, she does so where the blood and viscera are seen and felt.
  • Stealth Craft. Like the jungle cats that the Felidae are named after, Izel is a stalker of prey. She walks without sound and weaves her Gray and Green through the air so there is not even a shimmer of a Sight Shield when she passes. Comfortable in her power and her body, Izel in the jungle is impossible to see or hear.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Emotional Manipulation. Perhaps from either too Dark of Jewels or some other mental block, Izel cannot correctly manipulate emotions, good or bad. It is like her Craft is a brush of wind against a cool cheek for all the good it does. Though this frustrated her greatly as a youth she has come to utilize her more natural charm (or anger) instead of relying on Craft.
  • Compulsion. Akin to her emotional Craft, Compulsion is a different beast and one that Widows typically excel at. Izel at first thought it was because she hated the idea, being forced against one’s will. After her training in the Coven they decided that it was best that Izel just avoid use of compulsion in the future altogether. Her few early attempts required very intense mind Healing afterwards, much to her teacher’s dismay.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Eztli Itza, White - Broken Tiger Eye, 1/2 Shaladorn 1/2 Eyrien Hearth Witch. 375 yrs old. [She was broken during the Purge of her Offering, but retains a powerful personality and is a fixture of the Itza Tribe. Married after the Purge once she realized just how easily her life could be snuffed out. Presently one of the most respected Hearth Witches in the Itza Tribe.]
Father: Atl Itza, Opal - Green, Shaladoran Prince. [Decreased due to old age. Married her mother from a Lesser Tribe named Vopli but later was accepted into the Itza Tribe.]
Siblings:
(Brother) Momoztli ‘Momo’ Itza, Tiger Eye - Summer Sky, 3/4 Shaladoran 1/4 Eyrien Prince, 145 yrs old. [He and Izel are not close, for Izel was with the Coven by the time he was born. Momoztli followed their father, choosing politics over battle. Izel believes he is their mother’s favorite child.]

Mentor, best friend, and former Leader of the Felidae
Tlalli ‘Alli’ Marzena,  Green - Red Black Widow [Deceased due to old age. Never retired from the Felidae and died on her feet, guarding a holy place. Considered one of the best leaders in recent Felidae history.]

History:

Izel was six the first time she told her mother she wanted to be a warrior. Her mother, a half-breed Eyrien blessed with wings and a heart of steel, had only smiled sagely and patted her head. When Izel was older her mother told her that even as a babe she knew her daughter had the heart of a fighter.

Her father, a native Shaladoran, had tried to teach her the arts of patience and politics, of wooing with words, not war. Izel had loved him and listened but she’d watched the warriors of her tribe with desire. Before dawn she would wake to learn the women’s arts, to shoot the bow and throw daggers. Her father had loved her and understood, giving his teenage daughter the chance to see both paths set before her: warrior or politician.

When the snaketooth broke through her finger, blessing her with the Black Widow caste along with her powerful Birthright, Izel had whooped in joy before running to her mother and father. Her heart had still sung for battle, for the fight and the thrill of the fight. She was a daredevil who threw herself headlong into danger. In the pre-dawn light, she’d shoved her hand before her still abed parents and grinned like a half-mad woman. When her parents were awake enough to finally realize the implications, Izel merely told them she was going to join the Felidae.

No matter her proclamations, Izel was not allowed to join the Felidae at her age. She was barely thirteen, dangerously powerful and an emergent Black Widow. The Itza Tribe had a number of Widows but her training was done with the Coven of Shalador. There she was with girls of her age, learning from the best Black Widows in Shalador on how to control their gifts and mystic powers.

Blessed with the youth of an Eyrien bloodline, Izel was still barely a woman when the Coven bestowed upon her the title of fully trained Black Widow. She’d already had her Gray for years by then, aware each day that she was bound to Shalador by her power as much as her training. She was accepted into the Felidae the same day she left the Coven. There was a small celebration to honor the acceptance of a new sister, and that night among the warrior women of Shalador, Izel knew she was home.

For many years she merely trained, embracing the physical nature of fighting with weapons that were not typically a woman’s weapon. The spear, the sword, close combat with fists and feet. Each motion was akin to art for Izel, the sweep of the spear or the flow of her fist to an opponent her song to the Darkness. In training and mock combat, she was a whirlwind of death, all with a subtle smile on her face.

The first man she killed, for poaching in the Sacred places, was Tribeless. She dreamt of his face that night but it was not a nightmare. No, Izel dreamt of killing him again, of the justification of his death and the satisfaction she had felt. She had the heart of a fighter and the calm of a killer.

It was not long after that she was taken under the wing of the current leader of the Felidae, Tlalli ‘Alli’ Marzena, a Red Jeweled Black Widow. They had much in common, from beliefs to caste to almost shared Jewels. Alli didn’t befriend Izel just because they had much in common, it was because she had picked Izel out to succeed her. Though Alli was still young, barely past 40, the Black Widow knew that her death could come in a moment or could steal her away in the night years from then.

For decades Izel and Alli were close, best friends if one were honest. They laughed and loved together, and most importantly, Izel learned from Alli. She’d been raised in a Tribe known for their politicians and Izel was adequate at diplomacy. Alli forced her to relearn what had been explained at her father’s knee, to master the art form as much as she could.

By the time that Alli finally died, on her feet guarding a Sacred Place, Izel was ready. She seamlessly took over the Felidae. Though she mourned for Alli, tears flowing without shame, Izel shouldered the burden readily. In the years that followed, she proved herself a good leader. She was stubborn without being brutal. She was a teacher, relentless but with a small measure of compassion. She was elder sister to all the Felidae and trained them to protect all of Shalador, both her land and her people.

In the years that passed from that point, Izel became a fixture among the Felidae. With her long life, she spent over 80 years as the leader of the Felidae, training her sisters and watching as sisterhood and love of Shalador flourished among her sisters. Though a rare woman petitioned Izel to be released from the bonds of the Felidae, most of her sisters stayed until they died. Though at times the woman quarrel, Izel always reminds her sisters that they are devoted to each other and Shalador. If the reminder doesn’t work, Izel isn’t afraid to put one of her sisters in the dirt to enforce the point.

When the Black Queen returned, Izel had dared hope that Shalador would be unified. With a Priestess Queen wearing the Black in charge, it should have been unifying. Instead, fully native Shaladorans rose to fight against their mixed blood and full Eyrien neighbors. Even Izel felt the hatred, women she’d have once been proud to call sister refusing to serve under a ‘mixed blood’ like her. Chaos slowly grew and with it unrest among even the Coven and Blinded Vigil. Some of her sisters spoke of a darkness that would cloud over Shalador.

When that Darkness came, Izel realized that even she hadn’t understood the full impact of the danger facing Shalador. Izel can still recall the very moment she felt the Eldest Sister erupt, how the trees overhead shook and how, even on the Gray, she felt the reverberations from the mountain. When she reached out to the Winds, desperate to return to her sisters, she felt the shudder there as well, shocking her into stillness. She barely hesitated before she turned to the new Felidae recruits and barked at them to not jump to the Winds.

Through the dense forest treetops she barely saw the smoke plume into the air that heralded that the Darkest Days had come.

With a simple order, she began the run back to the Felidae headquarters. It would take them over an hour without the Winds but she couldn’t risk the young Widows on the destabilized Winds. Each footfall was desperation, realization that time was running out in each moment. By the time they’d returned her second in command had organized the Felidae to approach the Eldest Sister, to try and do what they could.

By the end of the day, the realization was that there was little to be done.

The Territory Court was gone, survivors from Aztlan saying that the Black Queen and her Court had gone to defend them from the mountain. None had seen any of them return.

Chaos descended over the Territory. Eventually, the winds stabilized enough to ride them, even though the Eldest Sister continued to blow smoke and ash into the air. As leader of the Felidae, she trimmed the protections of the Sacred Places to send her sisters to help refugees and keep order. With help from the Coven and the Council of Seven, a sort of stalemate in the weeks afterward descended.

With the murder of six members of the Council of Seven, the chaos broke free again.

The six Tribes who just saw their Elder killed shook with rage. Other tribes were bickering about who to appoint to the Council of Seven. The Blinded Vigil was reeling by the accuracy of their vision and all the Black Widows were without a guiding hand from the Council of Seven.

It was a still night when Izel broached the idea of taking over. She never wanted the power of ruling but she explained, to protect Shalador, they needed those with the visions of the future. At first there was resistance, from her sisters as well as some in the Coven and Blinded Vigil. They talked most of the night until such a time it had been agreed: they would assume leadership in the crisis, until such a time as the chaos had ended.

With the last remaining member of the Council of Seven, Izel joined with the Coven Leader and the Leader of the Blinded Vigil to become the Guardians of Shalador. Though they are reticent about their plans, they were earnest about their desire to protect Shalador. As they’d done for years, the Black Widows work together for Shalador, but this time, it is with them leading instead of following.

Not all trust Izel or her companions in the Guardians of Shalador. Many resent them. It matters naught to Izel. They are committed. Stubbornly, Izel will not fall until Shalador is set right again. Now, they watched the webs, beseech the Darkness for visions and pray that they will not be too late to save them all.

Character in Play:

She felt the shock through her Jewels only moments before the thundering boomed overhead. It was not the thunder of lightning though that shook her bones, it was the reverberation of something more dangerous, and far more deadly. The foot she’d been about to place was stilled, the leaves of the undergrowth moving with the revelations that still shook the forest around her.

From the corner of her eye, she saw another of the Felidae clutch a hand to her breast as the woman whipped her head towards the sound. Izel was more cautious, tentative weaving her Gray around her and searching the area around them for signs of anything amiss. With care she lowered her foot to the loom, tense muscles obeying but ready to fight or run. Only after she found nothing near them with her Gray did Izel turn to the Felidae around her.

Most of them were relatively new, some of them the loudest dissenters amongst the sisters in regards to her mixed heritage. Even the Felidae were not immune to the boiling troubles of Shalador’s people. Rizel, her second in command for their patrol was already forming up the woman, ordering them into a loose circle. Izel quietly joined them, opening herself up further and seeking the nearest Wind in which they could return to their encampment and meet up with the rest of the Felidae.

The nearest Wind, a Green, danced wildly as she felt it, bucking like a water buffalo might when a young boy tried to ride the beasts. Izel was shocked, horrified even, for the Winds never bucked wildly, never even shifted perceptible. Searching further she could feel the Winds shuddering, responding to the violent shock wave.

Whatever had happened, it went beyond just the physical but into the realm of the Darkness.

“Do not use the Winds,” she spoke, her voice commanding even as one pair of eyes darted to her with surprise. The woman hadn’t noticed Izel, her silent grace a testament to the dangerous jungle cat they were named after.

“What was that?” One of the younger women asked, shock clear in her words.

“Trouble,” Izel replied, her gaze darting to the horizon as she thought she saw something dark between the thick branches of the trees. “Tezi, climb that tree and tell me what you see.” Izel’s command was firm, not showing the confusion and concern that had bloomed in her breast.

The half-breed woman Tezi climbed the tree quickly, her wings an asset in the ascent. The forest was too dense for the woman to take off properly but in only a few minutes Tezi was sliding back down the tree, her wings braced for the descent. When the woman landed in front of Izel she wasted no time reporting in.

“Black smoke hangs in the distance, in the direction of Aztlan.” There were a couple of shocked gasps of breath from those around Izel, but she remained impassive. It was her fear being confirmed and now they were stuck in the forest without the Winds. Having so long relied on the use of the Winds to swiftly return from scouting, Izel felt a thread of anger at being so reckless. She couldn’t have planned for a worse position in the midst of a crisis. Nevertheless, she could not fix it from the middle of the forest.

Silent for a long moment, Izel frowned before she spoke. “We run, as fast as we can. If you cannot keep pace you will be left behind. We are Shalador’s protectors and she needs us now.”

Izel didn’t want for a reply before she took off. Some of the women launched into action before her, the thought of loved ones or old friends urging them forward. Whatever steeled their hearts did not matter to Izel, she only cared that they ran. The sound of feet slapping against the earth was a testament to their urgency.

Silence and stealth were forgotten as the first flecks of ash settled into the tree tops. The scent of almost burning filled the air as fear grew within Izel. She’d heard her brethren talking, heard the dangerous portents.

It seemed that the Darkest Days had arrived.

At this point in time, I would like everyone to step back and take a moment to appreciate the irony of Dash saying that about a character :)
