Appearance

Play By: Nabeel Ahmad Khan
Distinguishing Features: Ilyas needs glasses to read but sees well enough otherwise. He usually is carrying a large bag of papers, ink, reference materials, snacks, extra water bottles, ointment for chapped lips and sunburns, ect. He is everyone's mom-friend and is always prepared.

Personality

Personality:
Ilyas is a thoughtful, precise man. He takes his time and great care with everything that he does, from the way he dresses to the way he moves to the tone he chooses to use in any conversation. Even someone who cannot read a psychic scent would peg him as a Prince, but precision and efficiency are not all he got from his Caste. Ilyas is also fiercely devoted to the people and causes in his life. He doesn't believe in giving less than 100% of himself to anything that he believes in. Right now, that is getting used to and becoming useful within the Tabur, which were his mother's people but who he is just beginning to get to know.

For all his care, Ilyas is not a man constantly in motion. He believes that downtime is important to efficiency and so takes care, now that he is free, to have some time every day to chill and engage in activities he enjoys, such as playing with his cat, watching a sunset over the desert, or playing a game of Blood chess. He makes friends if not easily, then not with great difficulty because the people he likes are usually the people doing similar work to his own so there is a natural commonality. He is a little shy at first around new faces but once he is in his element (with a task in hand) he does well enough in social situations.

Because of how much he hates surprises, Ilyas tries to be prepared for every situation. He carries a self-care/care of others kit with him everywhere he goes and has all sorts of reference notes written out in advance of any task. Even in bed with a woman he is careful, seeing to her needs with all the care and gentility he has. Not one for casual sex, Ilyas hopes to one day find a partner that he can truly build a life with.

The loss of his Offering Jewel, especially since he never really had the pleasure of using it, shattered something else in his soul. In every use of his Summer Sky he flinches and is reminded of what he could have been and what he had lost. The pain had been immense and he has yet to really stop and deal with what the loss of Jewel, family, and way of life has done to his psyche. Instead, he has very much repressed it, focusing on the physical and the every-day, even though the grief is always there, nagging at the back of his mind when he uses his Jewel.

His freedom means everything to Ilyas, though sometimes it also scares him. Where before someone else always made choices for him now he is the master of his own fate. This is a huge burden and one he hopes he is up to the task of dealing with. Anxiety still eats at him at times, and not a day goes by when he doesn't think of his family and how they are still in bondage. If ever the day comes when he can afford to do so, Ilyas's greatest hope is that he will be able to find and free his family and bring them back to Pruul.

Likes:
  • Organization: From when Ilyas was a boy, organization came naturally to him. Numbers, documents, rooms, schedules, everything that can be optimized will be if it is his job. He takes great joy and pride in efficiency and approaches all projects not just with an eye for order but also for elegance. There is a true artistry in this facet of Ilyas's personality.
  • Freedom: He has been a slave most of his life. Holding his freedom papers changed his world forever and he will never, never let someone take his freedom from him again. No, Ilyas will bask in it. He takes his time with all the tasks and pleasures he is allowed as a free man. He watches sunsets, takes weekends off to sleep in, and takes his time eating every meal. In these small indulgences, Ilyas finds near-endless enjoyment.
  • Cats: Ilyas has always liked cats. They are efficient predators but also know how to enjoy the finer parts of life. Getting a cat was one of the first things he did when he was freed. Now his little feline lady is his pride and joy and sleeps every night curled up on his pillow.
Dislikes:
  • Silence: Especially at night, silence weirds Ilyas out. He slept in the same room as his siblings and mother growing up. The perfect quiet of the desert is something he has had a hard time getting used to and deeply unnerves him.
  • The unexpected: Ilyas like routine and plans. Throwing him into the deep end usually results in a very grumpy, upset Prince and will end in sub-par work. He is not the person you want dealing with a crisis, but he's great at avoiding them, to begin with.
  • Insect bites: He is very, very allergic to biting insects, especially mosquitos. Where most people get small bumps, his bites swell to several times the size and itch terribly. This makes Ilyas very grumpy and has resulted in many small scars from constantly picking at bug bites, especially in his years as a Slave when he was not allowed his Jewels as a shield.

    Fears:
  • Failing his family: Ilyas wants to find a way to free his family but it is beyond his reach now. He fears that it will always be so and that his mother will fade and die in captivity and that his brother will never know a life out of chains.
  • A return to slavery: recidivism is a known occurrence. Ilyas has seen the numbers and knows he is not immune. What if he cannot adjust to life without the collar now that he is out in the world? What if he cannot learn to live without that structure that he has always craved?
  • Worms: they didn't have those in Raej and the first time he saw one it scared him deeply. Those things are mosters out of nightmares and then, not days after his freedom was handed to him they destroyed a city! He hopes never to encounter one.
Craft Strengths:
  • Efficiency Craft: This is where Ilyas shines. Even without his Jewel he can organize his thoughts in a manner that just makes them all make sense, and when he boosts that with power it seems like all the steps needed to complete his project are clear to him. He uses this power to always be exactly where he needs to be when he needs to be there and with the resources he requires. This has given him a reputation for startling people because he's just always there when you need him.
  • Contracts: Ilyas's master made him craft many of the Contracts for his business. Because of this, Ilyas has a lot of experience in this field. He is skilled in both crafting and reading Contracts and takes pleasure in legalese and annotations much like some men would enjoy a fine wine.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • Offensive Craft: He was overtly not taught this type of Craft. He just flatly sucks at it. While he is learning how to use his body to better be able to defend himself and those he loves, his Craft continues to misfire when he tries to use it this way, sometimes producing nothing and sometimes much, much more than he wanted. This has left singed eyebrows on more than one occasion.
  • Diplomacy Craft: Ilyas isn't bad at the old-school talking-type of diplomacy, but affecting the emotions and minds of others? That was forbidden by his master and the few times the young Prince tried experimenting with it he was punished. Because of this Ilyas is shy about initiating any sort of psychic connection with another and cannot affect their minds at all.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Ilana al-Tabur, Yellow - Tiger Eye Hearth Witch, 53 (b. 140AP)
Father: Mirza Hareed, Rose - Purple Dusk Warlord, 66 (b. 127AP)
Siblings: Kurzo al-Tabur, Rose - Purple Dusk Warlord, 25 (b. 168AP)
Kalid al-Tabur, White - Rose Warlord, 27 (b. 166AP)

History:

Ilyas doesn't know how his mother came to wear the collar, but Ilyas was born to it. Ilana was a skilled and proficient Hearth Witch who despite enslavement managed to do well for herself. She was organized and efficient at leading others and by the time Ilyas was born she was the housekeeper and overseer of a large estate. Her usefulness to their masters ensured that she and her son were rarely punished or beaten, that they had enough food, and that they slept on clean straw mats with a sturdy roof over their heads.

His father, he assumed, was his master. Mirza Hareed was a big man with dark eyes and a kindly smile. He took his liberties with most of the female slaves he possessed but was not cruel to them like some master Ilyas heard of. His mother was one of Mirza's favorites, and after Ilyas she bore him two more sons. Mirza made it clear that she was not to confirm paternity for he would not have his line tainted, but he did promise her that the boys would live good lives... for slaves.

Mirza likely thought that he did treat them well, for he honored them in his way, just not always in a fashion they would have chosen for themselves. His brothers were both strong and fast and were taught how to fight so that hey could become guards for Mirza's legitimate daughters. When they were deemed ready, the two youths were taken away by Healers and drugged into a deep sleep. They were rendered eunuchs and appointed to lifetime positions as protectors to the two little witches.

Ilyas was spared a similar fate. He had been bookish and good with organization and numbers since childhood and he learned many things at his mother's side. By the time he was ready for his Offering, Mirza had paid for him to be trained to be a scribe and accountant. His mother was getting on in years so, with his Green handed over to his Master and his life largely unchanged by that right of passage, Ilyas set to work helping his mother run his Master's large household and estates.

Ilyas learned to always be prepared, to anticipate Mirza's whims and needs. He worked hard because that was what his mother had taught him, and only rarely dreamed of what life would be like without a collar around his neck.

His mother, though, was fading while fairly young. Struck with early onset dementia, she became unable to do her work as well as before and often seemed to forget where she was. It was in this year that Ilyas first heard the word Tabur. His mother whispered of her people, on the far side of the mountains in Pruul. She spoke in rambling circles about the desert and the mountains and of a family he had never heard of.

Then Mirza caught wind of her failing health and her mistakes in her work and sold her.

Ilyas snapped. His mother had served their Master loyally for decades. She had given him three sons and raised them to obey him, yet the moment she stopped being useful to him, he simply sold her like a chicken.

Not having any formal fighting training and not being in possession of his Jewels, Ilyas's rage burned hot but was ultimately futile. When the red haze left his eyes, he was kneeling at Mirza's feet, with blood on his hands. He had managed to snatch a kitchen knife and take a chunk out of his master's shoulder, a wound quickly tended to but that would change his life forever.

Furious, Mirza didn't just sell Ilyas. He had one of his assistants break the young man's Offering Jewel in front of his eyes and sold him to the worst place he could think of. For the crime of attacking his master, Ilyas was sold to the Salt Mines of Pruul.

Ilyas was not permitted to say goodbye to his mother or brothers. He was just dragged out of the house in chains and shoved into a slaver's wagon along with dozens of others bound for the place slaves went to die.

The trip to Pruul was long and tear-filled. Ilyas had never known any life outside of his Master's estates and the other slaves seemed to pick up on it. He was given the worst spots to sleep in and had his bowl of food stolen most nights, but he never fought back, still too much in shock from his Jewel breaking and everything that had happened. It wasn't until he was suddenly IN Pruul, his mother's land, that Ilyas managed to shake off some of the daze and look around. She had been right, the desert was beautiful, and when he asked, he was told that the Tabur were a great people, a Clan of the desert.

Just as his shock was wearing down and Ilyas was starting to accept that he was going to get one last glimpse of the sun before dying underground, he was escorted into a room. There, a woman waited with a piece of paper. She had Ilyas sit and sent him right back down the rabbit-hole of shock anew, just this time with a word he had never expected to hear.

Freedom.

The contract was a simple one, but he still read it over three times to make sure he understood. It detailed how the owner of the Mines, Prince Izil Jofari, offered each slave purchased the choice to shuck their collar in exchange for going into debt to him for three times their purchase cost. They would work in the mines and live in open-air communities where they could live, marry, and be as close to free as it was possible to get while still being contractually obliged to work. Once the sum was repaid, Ilyas would be a free man and able to either go anywhere in the world or petition one of the Clans of Pruul for admittance.

He signed without another moment of hesitation. His collar was removed, his Jewel returned to him and he was a free man.

The Commune was simple and basic, but full of free men and women. Each of them had been a slave and had a story. Ilyas passed his days when not in the mines writing down the stories of any who would tell him, fascinated by the many different paths that had brought them all here. When he wasn't doing that, he volunteered to help organize things around the Commune. He was given more and more responsibility and thrived. Yes, the mines were hard work, but his body adjusted and knowing he could go home to his new friends and neighbors motivated Ilyas like nothing else could.

It was some time in his second year that his work around the Commune came to the attention of Prince Jofari. When an opportunity arose in the northern mine at Aquetus, Ilyas was among those offered a place on the team. Prince Jofari promised them expedited release if they could get the mine working with this new water-method in three months, and Ilyas signed on with excitment. He worked alongside engineers, metallurgists, and technicians from all sorts of trades, and was able to use his skills at optimization to make the system flow as smoothly as he could.

By the deadline, Aquetus had been producing salt and water for three weeks and Ilyas as proud of the work that he had done. He was even prouder when Prince Jofari himself came to oversee the release of all those who had worked on the project and personally handed Ilyas a pouch of marks to start his new life with.

As they milled around together after Prince Jofari had left to meet the Sabbah Queen, one of his fellows asked Ilyas where he was going after this. Ilyas just smiled and replied,

"The Tabur."

With a bit of assistance from the Court of the Sabbah Queen who had apparently set up some sort of network to get slaves that wanted to remain in Pruul to where they wished to be, Ilyas joined a Tabur caravan and crossed the desert to Onn. It was an exciting journey, full of discovery. When he told them that his mother had been Tabur, the clansmen and women accepted him with open arms, though he was told that only the Queen would be able to confirm his place among them and determine if he would be allowed to stay.

Character in Play:

Ilyas sat at the table and knew, on some level, that the numbness he was feeling was shock. The contract before him was perfectly clear, wasn't it? There was nothing difficult to comprehend. Just a price tag multiplied three times and a rate at which Ilyas would be able to pay back Prince Jofari's investment in him before he would be a... free man. Entirely free.

"Prince?"

"Huh?"

"Do you accept the offer?" The woman behind the desk smiled kindly at him.

"Everyone is a little in shock at the beginning. I was one of the first to get to the communes and have seen a lot of men like you come through here. Born to the collar, right? That's the only way you get skin that pale beneath it."

Ilyas nodded mutely.

"It will be alright, I promise you. The work in the mines is hard but fair under Prince Jofari. You'll be off and free before you know it and until then, the Communes make good homes. Do you need a little time to consider it?"

Ilyas flung himself towards the desk and the pen. The woman chuckled and sat back as Ilyas signed with shaking fingers. When he pushed the contract across to her, she took it and added it to a stack. "What's next?"

"Next is we take that ring of metal off your neck and get you over to the Healers to check that you aren't sick or infected with lice. You'll be given boots and sturdy clothing and then taken to your new home where you will rest for a few days."

Ilyas's hand rose to the collar around his neck. "Wait, you're removing the collar now?"

The woman nodded solemnly. "Yes, of course. You're no longer a slave, Ilyas, just a man in some debt and with a work contract."

He still gaped at her, his usually brilliant mind unable to wrap itself around this concept. So fast, it was happening so fast. Already she was standing and had a key in her hand, labeled with a number that matched the one on his collar. He flinched when she first reached for it, then stilled. There was a moment of fumbling, then a click, and the metal that had graced his neck his entire life was lifted away. Ilyas's hands sprang up to touch his throat. The skin there was tender, soft...

"This must be a dream..." he whispered under his breath.

"No, Ilyas. This is real. Welcome to your new life."
