Distinguishing Features
Lord Ian Malcolm Falkirk is a man who resembles the rugged Highlands that spawned him: hard, immobile and majestic. He is tall, fighting fit, and unafraid of going toe-to-toe with any Warlord-Prince. Natural aptitude helps, but so does a lifetime of warfare.

Spoiler:  Detailed Description (click to show/hide)
Personality

Personality:

Ian Malcolm Falkirk was a man born to rule. He was able to unite his clan behind him at an astonishingly young age. His charisma, confidence, and natural leadership shape everything about him.

He is profoundly loyal, more given to a few deep friendships than many shallower ones. He fell in love only once, and married her. He is choosy in where he bestows his affections, and has taken no steady lover since the death of his wife, dealing with his ruts through violence, isolation, or if he must, a discrete lady arranged by a Red Moon House. The simple, physical couplings leave him empty and missing his great love.

While his passions run deep, they are neither sporadic nor out of control. This is less the result of his duties than the cause of them. He likes to be in control, to trust his destiny to no one but himself. His commanding presence, desire for power and mastery over himself and his surroundings were why he had the skills to take the Clan at such a young age. His ability to take the needs of the many into account were why his Clan rallied around him and permitted it.

He tends to approach most problems with the same determination and focus as he does battle. This can lead people to assuming that he lacks finesse, but the truth is that he would just rather be direct. While capable of subtly and finesse he does not often choose it. That is more the province of his twin.

Ian is dedicated to his Clan and his family, in that order. That being said, he most certainly adores his children, and accepts no point in their lives where he does not have the right to meddle. From their love life (including children, or more notably, the lack of them) to their training and positioning in Clan and Court politics, he allows no secrets between them, and expects their obedience to his will.

He feels the same way about his siblings, especially his twin sister, and guards her closely. She can yell or pout, he pays it no mind. The Falkirks, one and all, are his. He attends every Birthright, Offering and marriage, save when he is actually in combat. He finds no political duty more pressing than being a living, breathing part of the lives of his people, including the Landen.

Accusations that he is over-controlling and interfering are not met with anger, but with amused bafflement. How could a Clan Laird 'over-control' what is his?

Likes:
  • 1 Killing. Many Warlord-Princes fear what they are, or are shamed by what they do. Laird Ian Malcolm Falkirk revels in it. He is a Darkness forged weapon, with a legal right to kill those who threaten his Clan. He is experienced enough to direct his violence effectively, achieving an almost preternatural clarity while riding the Killing Edge.
  • 2 Power. Power means many things, to many people. The personal power of any Warlord-Prince appeals to Ian, to the point that he relishes the rare opportunities when he is privileged to test himself against them. Only a keen sense of his responsibilities as Clan Laird keeps those confrontations to a normal level. The real source of his power is being Clan Laird, being able to control and direct the destiny of his Clan. He sees his children as extensions of his own power, and can therefor be over-controlling with them. He is in fact an over-controlling, dominate male, with a profound amount of influence within his own domain. He also loves to wield power over himself, controlling his own passions and needs for the welfare of his Clan
  • 3 The Highlands. Laird Ian knows each stick and stone of the Falkirk Highlands, and has fought battles over most of it. He knows each dwelling, each creek; every bridge or secret ford. He loves the harsh weather, the challenge of living. he loves wresting food and sustenance out of the Highlands as if she were foe and lover, all in one. He would protect any portion of the Highlands, even those belonging to other Clans, because to him they are the center and purpose of existence.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Foreign Queens. Any Queen that is not one of his own, yet dares to feel she can give orders to his people, on his lands, is both offensive and infuriating. A Highland Queen, at least, could be trusted not to get everyone killed through simple ignorance. Between the Clan Laird and his daughter, there are likely a whole string of traumatized Queens who would rather have no Court than serve as Village Queen in the Falkirk Highlands. Ian does, however, have blood ties to the Killan Clan, and would always treat a Killan Queen with great courtesy. That is not to say that he would not advise, lead, direct, teach, and point her at any of his handsome sons.
  • 2 Lowland ways. In the Highlands, all life is precious, Mother Night dances in the Northern Lights, and the concerted enemy of all living things is the harsh, brutal weather. This means even Landen are Clan, and both guest-rite and honor are of critical importance. A dishonorable man will not find the help he needs to survive. In the lowlands, honor is optional, there are more people than positions for those people to fill, and Landen are victims, not Clan members. (His brief, early experience of a corrupt lowland Court has shaped his view point. Note, it isn't lowlanders he dislikes; many current Falkirks are adoptees. It is the attitudes he ran across which he dislikes.)
  • 3 Falkirk Firth. For all of his love of his Clan and the Highlands, the coastal village with its seasonal port is a constant thorn in his side. Vulnerable, transient populations, no defense from the terrain, and a port just barely profitable enough to attract raiders, mercenaries, Pirates and thieves. It's brutal destruction allowed him to rebuild with modern defenses, but nothing can truly be done to eliminate it as a target. Considering all of the kin he has lost defending the holding, it is a wonder he hasn't razed it himself.

    Fears:
  • 1 Succession. Ian has no single, strong heir to his Clan. His plan had been to wed Yseult to Raild, cementing the Master of Blade's claim to the Clan. It was a crushing blow when Raild Bonded the Killan Queen. Now he is faced with his son, Seamus, who is too polished for a Clain Laird; his nephew Aaron, who wasn't raised in the Highlands; his nephew Malachy, who is deeply unsteady and standoffish, but who bears the darkest jewel; Aellesdair, who has the skill, talent and drive but carries Landen Blood; Conn, who has the correct balance of polish and grit, but who is only distantly related to Ian. He feels that none of them could keep the Clan whole if Ryane's family chose to fully back a different claimant.
  • 2 The Court leaving. He fears his girls leaving to serve in higher Courts. Given his own love of power, he knows that when it is offered one or both of his little Queens will leave him. This is both a personal fear, as he would send those he trusts most - his friends - with them. He is already achingly lonely, so sending his best loved off with his daughter or niece would hurt him deeply. This is also a fear for them, for their safety. He cannot control things out there the way he can in the Highlands. The physical, mental, and emotional pain they would face would be profound. And that doesn't even begin to address their physical safety. Finally, it is a political fear. Who would bless his crops, or feed his land? Another string of Queens who won't listen to him?
  • 3 The Killan Clan Falling. Given the Falkirk Clan's historical stance on Black Widows, and the blood ties to that Clan, the Killan Queen falling from grace could trigger a witch-hunt, a mini-purge in violent backlash against Black Widows that would result in disaster for his Clan, given that his oldest son is a Black Widow. He needs the Killan dynasty to weather the political fallout of the Witchstorm, and the Sheane outlawing, both. He knows the Sheanes will not surrender; the Falkirks wouldn't.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Power Bolts. Ian's whole life has been combat, from the murder of his grandfather to the present day. He also loves it; this is the one area of Craft he does not resent studying or practicing. In particular, he excels at power bolts. As a conceit, he loves to shoot power balls out of his craft-enhanced sword, and uses the blade as a focus for most of his Combat Craft.
  • 2 Enhanced Battlecraft. Ian loves to fight, loves to kill. Really. And Battlecraft is his greatest strength, for he fully embraces everything Mother Night made him. He never feels quite so alive, or impassioned, as after a really close fight.
  • 3 Advanced Combat Shielding Ian Malcolm, after training with the powerful Grey Jewels at the Killan Court, has learned a finely honed power and skill with Combat Shields. They are faster than normal, allowing him to either layer the shaped, deadly Shields to be effective beyond the normal constraints of his Sapphire Jewel, or to rapid-fire them and multiple opponents in a coordination both rarely see and hard to achieve.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Stealth. Ian did study it, once upon a time. But his offering alone made Stealth craft less than effective unless he masked his scent and his aura before invoking any other aspect of it. Once he became Clan Laird it went from expensive and tedious to pointless; his job is to be the diversion, not to be hiding. A fierce and aggressive Warlord-Prince, this merely allowed logic and duty to mesh with his preferences: standing in the front lines.
  • 2 Intricate Craft. intricate (timed) Craft is just what it says: intricate. Complex, time consuming and is usually mastered after one's Offering. Ian was Clan Laird immediately following his offering, and a husband and father shortly after that. He knows the theory of Intricate Craft, and certainly would recognize an incoming death spell, but that is as far as his training took him. Both the Clan and Court Craft Trainer's hound him regularly to correct this deficiency. His reply is always the same: When I retire. For now, let's review your combat Craft.
  • 3 Breaking Jewels/Death spells. Ian Malcolm Falkirk loves fighting, loves killing. He even despises the shattering of Jewels as a form of sacrilege. Indeed, one reason the Falkirks have managed as much tolerance as they have for Black Widows is a deep seated belief that Mother Night's Gifts, however terrifying, should be handled with care and respect. To Break a Jewel is wrong, akin to rape. But Ian's trouble with Death spells is shallower. He simply has many ways to kill that he very much prefers to use.  Powerbolt, Witchfire, and sword play are all far, far more satisfying to his basic nature. He has never mastered either Craft, and often ends up at odds with the Clan Council when a Black Widow chooses to be Broken. He feels that no sane, whole Blood could make such a choice, and therefore the mere fact that one chooses it means they are not capable of making such a choice.

    History:

    Spoiler:  Timeline (click to show/hide)
Ian was born to a very patient Hearth-Witch who strongly felt that what Ian's father, Malcolm, needed most was some responsibility. She accorded Malcom Paternity to help steady him, and ended up with an active roll in all of his acknowledged children's lives. She did so with grace and ease, never publicly admitting to jealousy or insecurity where his many other lovers were concerned. She was Malcolm's on-again/off-again lover until her death, the most constant (though not always the most desired or respected) woman in Malcolm's life.

This shaped Ian profoundly, for he did not want to treat other people as has father had treated his mother, and many of his casual lovers. He learned to be choosy about where he bestowed his time and affection, and never forgot how even seemingly slight insults or powerless enemies could come home to complicate his father's life.

The young Warlord-Prince thrived on pressure and responsibility, even at a young age, stepping up to play the role of father to his younger siblings, and modeling himself not on his father, but his grandfather. He wanted to be everything his father was not, eschewing intellectual pursuits for martial and political ones. To this day, he distrusts any overly polished and charming courtier.

His Birthright Ceremony was complicated by a quarrel with the Priestess as to the appropriateness of horses in the Temple as witnesses, but Mother Night must have liked his loyalty to his horse, for he was gifted with an Opal Birthright, the same as his Grandfather, Falkirk Clan Laird Emyr. This forged an immediate bond between the two Warlord-Princes. His grandfather was often lauded as having a great destiny before him, because he was half long-lived. He was a symbol of hope and enduring power for the Falkirk Clan.

Ian's focus on combat and eschewing of intellectual studies has left him with great rifts in his Craft knowledge. He hasn't cast an Illusion or used Whimsy Craft since before his Offering. For Hearth Craft, he can manage Reinforcement Craft, from the need to stop breaking his daughters' more delicate furniture. He is astonishingly bad at psychic cleansing, tending to paint the area he sought to cleanse in the smells and feels of his latest battle. This may be because he tends to use his sword as a foci in his Craft, or simply due to his nature. He has not used Stealth Craft since he was a child and still had leisure to truly hunt. Intricate Craft requires time and practice that, as an adult, he simply has not had.

Ian's Offering ceremony resulted in a Sapphire; it was crucial, as the old Clan Laird, Emyr, was dying of a lingering Black Widow Poison. Ian challenged his grandfather for leadership, and won, despite not being the best politician amongst those who were rivals for the position. He was, however, the most driven warrior, Emyr's grandson who bore identical Jewels. Driven by fear, anger and sentiment the Clan united behind him as they sought either a cure, or vengeance.  The Old Clan Laird was asked to hold a place on the Clan Council, but served only briefly before succumbing to the Poison.

Ian's first act as Clan Laird was to seek out more Healers for his Clan. He was looking for differing training, hoping somewhere there was a cure for his failing grandfather. He searched the Highlands for a Healer. Unexpectedly, he fell in love with Healer Cotriona Killan. He managed to win her hand in marriage, and her loyalty for his Clan. She left her powerful and wealthy Killan Clan to join his, even changing her name. Their romance is one of the great love stories of the Clan.

The following year, Cortriona gave birth to a Warlord-Prince son, and the future of the Clan seemed bright. All they needed was a young Queen to train at the old Falkirk Queen's knee.

A year later, still searching for new Healing techniques for his swiftly failing grandfather, Ian instead found his Bonded Queen. She returned with him to the Highlands, bedazzling him with the glory of a Bond, and her Queen's Touch. She offered hope and trouble in equal measure. The Clan was quite anxious. Despite her often reiterated desire to rule, she would not join the Clan and bitterly resented the Falkirk Queen's insistence that she apprentice for five years to the older Queen, before she would hand over responsibility (and income) from even one village. In addition to the Queen's ambition to rule, she desired Ian in her bed. If Ian bedded his Queen, his Killan wife could have the entire Killan Clan roused to a brutal wrath.

Unwilling to wait, furious at being scorned, the Queen conspired with a half-crazy Black Widow from the enclave to ensnare the minds of Ian's infant daughter and toddler son, making them love her and hate their parents. She also began poisoning the Killan Healer, to make her barren.

Ian's youngest brother, Aonghus, discovered what was happening and saved Ian's family. Despite their age difference, they became inseparable. Ian executed his own Queen and her other Bonded male, exiling most of her Court from the highlands. Only a few members were permitted to stay.

When his Queen daughter was born, the future and safety of his Clan seemed ensured. Even a second Queen, born to a cousin, seemed but another blessing to Ian.

Then his oldest son, his Warlord-Prince heir apparent who was already as strong as most grown men, manifested a natural Black-Widow Caste. The news was heart-wrenching, with his own Council debating the need to execute such a dangerous monster. But his lady wife, his brilliant and fiercely loyal Healer, told them that she would bring down the wrath of the Killan Clan if they did any such thing.

Mere rumors of Calum's second caste caused political issues with long time allies who retreated to neutral, even a few who became outright hostile, believing that Ian was ambitious enough to have forced his son to learn the Caste in order to win the hand of the Killan's Black Widow Queen.

Then the attack on Falkirk Firth occurred, and the constant mercenary threat disrupted the Highlands. Clan war, blood feud, and bitter betrayal divided the Falkirk Highlands, all apparently caused by his decision to support his son. His son, whose loyalty and devotion made him a legend within his own Clan, and had earned him the title Lord Protector from the local Landens.

The old Clan Queen perished just before the lowest point in Ian's life. The assault on his home, Falkirk Keep. His wife was killed by a powerful assassin, in the midst of the battle. He burned for vengeance but evidence was just enough to show the Clan they had been battling was as much a victim as the Falkirks. To the horror of all the Highlands, the Ragged Raider's Mercenary company they had believed to be working for the Haldane Clan was not. They stayed in the highlands, looting and pillaging.

For the last ten years the Falkirks, indeed, all of the Highlands, have faced a formless opponent, with murky goals, seemingly endless resources, and wildly differing minions. In all of this time, very little had been discovered about the Red Archer who had murdered Laird Ian's wife.

After the Sheane Clan atrocities were made public, that particular mercenary company was linked to the Sheanes. At that point, all of the Clan's careful distance from Territory-wide politics crumbled. The whole Clan needed to know who has been orchestrating war in the Highlands.

The trip to the Court did not produce enough evidence to either slay the Clan's enemy, or drive off the remaining Sheanes, or in any way lessen Ian's rage. What he found instead was far more valuable: his true Queen, Coira Sheane Falkirk, and the elusive Dual Casted Oona Sheane. He might some day even forgive Niall for existing, once he learns of his daughter's bonded's relationship to his elusive Ialach Falkirk (Oona.)

    Character in Play:
    Blood Price, part two

Laird Ian Malcolm Falkirk stood still, blood dripping from his sword, entrails splattered on his armor and in his hair. His chest heaved for air, but not from exhaustion. From the effort of stopping. He didn't know how much time had passed, or whether Falkirk Keep still stood. What he did know, was that this particular army would never, ever challenge him again

It wasn't enough. Neither the fury that had routed an army, nor the near-mindless rage that had hunted down even those who ran were enough. Maybe no amount of killing would be enough, but Ian was willing to keep killing anyway, until not one Haldane or Falkirk remained.

He fought the urge to turn and slay those warriors of his Clan that were gathered behind him, driven by a grief and fury that could not be expressed in words. How dare even one Falkirk warrior live when his Lady-wife was dead? The rage threatened to overtake him again, but this time there were no enemies with which to slake his blood-lust. He fought with his inner beast, until his breathing steadied.

He reached a blood encrusted hand to his chest, to trace phantom arrow wounds that burned like acid. The pain was real, the arrows were real. But the wounds resided on the empty husk of his wife's body. He had not seen it. He didn't need to see it. Because he had felt each blow, felt the stir and spilling of Healing energy.

His brother, Aonghus was speaking. Ian didn't know for how long, or even why the man dared to intrude upon his grief. His temper flared again, and for a moment, Aonghus' life hung in the balance. But then the man's words registered. They gave him a new focus, a new target. Sanity crept into the Clan Laird's eyes as he listened.

"The Keep held, Laird. It held. All of your children are whole of life and limb."

Congratulations!

Ian has been blessed with Advanced Combat Shielding.

You may add this specialty & its description to this character's existing Craft Strengths section, along with an additional Craft Weakness for balance.
