Distinguishing Features: Finn is a strung and muscular man, and he keeps himself in excellent shape. While he's not particularly stylish, he does sport a beard and its maintenance is probably his one vanity.

Personality

Personality:

Finn is not friendly or sweet or nice - but that doesn't mean he's mean and hateful either. He just isn't particularly sociable. Nor does he really like... people. As a general rule, he finds most people tiresome, draining, or at the very least mildly annoying. Even when he likes a person he can often come off as brusk and standoffish, a naturally rather grumpy disposition mixing with a lack of social grace making him a seem somewhat unpleasant despite whatever best intentions he may have in the moment. He has been in the Courts long enough and is an astute enough man that even the Protocol he doesn't quite care for or understand has been absorbed into his bones - but unfortunately just because he can say all the right words and bow all the right ways doesn't make him any more apt at congeniality.

This isn't to say that he's a terrible person - or even a cold one. On the contrary, Finn is actually a very warm and compassionate man. He just isn't very good at... feelings. Or rather, he has them, he just doesn't do very well expressing them much of the time - and doesn't see why he should. He loves his family, he cares for the Court he serves, he is faithful and loyal to Maarika and considers himself a true patriot of Glacia. The sentiment itself should be enough, he doesn't see the need to brandy it about or broadcast it.

For the softer side of Finn that most don't see - stick him in a room with something small and furry. Dogs in particular, but just about any animal will soften the grump if you're looking close enough. He loves animals and cannot quite stop himself from giving aid or attention to one when they seek it or seem in need. Similarly, animals tend to gravitate toward him, sensing someone who will give just what is needed without making extra demands of them. A safe human.

Despite holding a position of martial skill as the Master of the Guard first to a Province Seat and now to a Territory, Finn is not a violent man. Quite the opposite, the Warlord is very calm and even-tempered. He prefers to listen and watch, to learn and plan accordingly. He is a strategist, and his goal is always more about defending and preserving lives than taking them. Both professionally and personally, he dislikes anger and violence and rarely raises his voice outside of what is needed when he's running drills with his men. When he is pushed to anger, he compartmentalizes exceptionally well - and focuses instead with a cool and logical clarity until he can takes some time alone to work out the emotions physically. It's a method he has developed over the years serving in and around Glacian politics when he despises the bastardized corruption that has infected their culture by way of the Dark Religion.

Likes:
  • 1 - The cold. The chill and serenity of winter and mountains is calming for him. The complete quiet that only an evening after heavy snowfall can bring is his favorite atmosphere. The chill helps center him and sharpen his focus as much as it does soothe the anxiety he's been carrying around his chest for a bit more than a year now since coming back from the inside edge of insanity. It reminds him of home, of the cold mountain peaks where he grew up - left unbothered by the storm of hate and oppression that denser Glacia was bathed in.
  • 2 - Dogs. Dogs are honest. They can tell the truth of someone's character upon meeting them - and will respond accordingly. They don't care if you are landen, Blood, Light Jeweled or Dark. All they care about is the strength of your character. The also do not expect you to engage in conversation with them - and are pleased with just quiet attention and care. He enjoys dogs - from the exuberant puppies all the way up to the unsociable old curmudgeons who just wish to be fed and left alone. Being around dogs also gives him a way to fend off loneliness and true isolation without requiring him to be around or interact with any people, who always feel the need to interact with just about anyone just because they're in the same room - a trait of humanity in general that he's never possessed or appreciated.
  • 3 - Training. Finn relishes in physical activity - in honing himself into a perfect weapon that he hopes and prays never to have to use. As a warrior, Finn prefers to fight from the defensive. He prefers strategy over brute force and he prefers to know the enemy ad avoid physical combat whenever possible. Whenever combat becomes the strategy people are guaranteed to be hurt, and people are likely to die. It is his job, his sworn calling in life, to protect and defend - not hunt and kill. The physical training is both an outlet for him and a way for him to get an instant gratification - a way for him to feel strong and capable, ready at a moment's notice to be able not to strike down an enemy, but protect and defend his charges. He will gladly be the shield and the wall between an attacker and his charge, and in order to be that shield he must be fast, agile, and able to think on his feet. Daily training reinforces those abilities and his confidence in himself to perform should the need arise.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Small spaces. Growing up high in the mountains where he spent most of his days outdoors no matter the chill in the air, Finn has always disliked the cramped feeling of being in a small room or a dense crowd. They make him edgy at best and anxious at worst, given the situation, and he always gravitates toward a window or door if at all possible. This serves two purposes - as it typically gives him a better vantage for the defense of whomever he is guarding (and he can monitor the possible entrances/escapes), and also gives him the feeling like he has more room to maneuver.
  • 2 - Chit-chat and social niceties. He's just not good at them. He never has been and he just doesn't like them. Meaningless chatter just for the sake of talking has never been pleasurable or logical to him. Finn will speak if he has something to say, but being forced to be social with someone just so that they can hear the whine of their own voice is tedious at best. It also puts him way out of his element and makes him feel uncomfortable.
  • 3 - The Dark Religion. Less of a "dislike" and more of a "burning hatred". He righteously blames the Dark Religion for the death of his siblings and the breaking of his parents. It's really only thanks to years of practice and his naturally sort of apathetic disposition that he's been able to keep his opinion on the matter close to his chest for so long. He was raised outside of it's influence, though he was aware of it's prevalence, and regards it as a load of poisonous bullshit meant to control the masses.
Fears:
  • 1 - Losing grip on his Self (again). Finn does not remember much of what happened in the months that his mind had been broken - which heightens this fear more than if he could at least recall what happened or what he'd done while under the influence of his insanity. Finn is highly devoted to his job as Master of the Guard, as a soldier, not because he relishes in violence but because he hates it - and sees anger and rage as a tool of such destruction. There is no question in his mind that he holds a very deep pit of that poisonous hate and rage inside of him, and losing himself to it and succumbing to it's seductive promises is one of his greatest fears.
  • 2 - Being separated from Maarika. Finn's loyalty to Maarika has only grown deeper with each year he has served her. He finds it a matter of pride, actually, that he does not have a heart bond like some of her other most loyal men - because that means that Mother Night (the True Mother and not that bastardized view of her that those beholden to the Dark Religion believe) believed that he did not need one to keep him close to her and help raise her up. Especially since she healed his mind and enabled his recovery, he's grown even more determined to remain by her side. The idea that somehow he may be separated from her, and be unable to serve her, shakes him. He can see no other purpose to his life other than to protect and serve the Queen of his choice.
  • 3 - His parents being discovered. After what happened with Gerrund and the breaking of their Jewels, Finn carries a daily secret fear that there is someone else out there who will find and hurt his parents. As soon as his mind was mended and he was able to gather the courage, he approached them and begged them to let him help them leave Glacia. But Glacia was their home, and they refused. Now, he's even further away from them - serving in the interim Territory Court of Nharkava - and less able to protect them. Their well-being is a constant ache and anxiety troubling his heart.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Calming Rage. Even for a Warlord, Finn is very even-tempered and steady on his feet. He is grounded and calm even when his temper is prodded, and fully believes that more battles are won through cool heads and careful planning rather than brute strength and raging conviction. He has worked to be able to pull a Warlord Prince back from the edge - usually with his own men but occasionally with those who are not under his command.
  • 2 - Shields. As a man who stresses defense, shielding is a large part of his combat style where it comes to incorporating Craft. He can call up shields quickly and then disperse them - using them to block, deflect, or absorb an attack depending on it's origin. He is also very skilled at maintaining multiple shields at the same time or weaving his Red into a pre-existing shield to add his strength to theirs. The latter takes a bit longer for him to do but ultimately less power/concentration once it is done.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Compulsion Craft. He has a natural distaste for controlling other people, particularly against their will or without their knowledge. While he can understand the usefulness, especially when in hostile territory, his attempts at it are weak at best and obvious at worst. He lacks any basic natural social grace to buffer and encourage the raw craft - so while if he were to truly try he would likely be able to get some effect, but it wouldn't be the smooth and subtle encouragement and manipulation that this kind of craft is best used for.
  • 2 - Reading Emotions. He typically isn't great at this even without Craft, which causes him to be suspicious and skeptical of just about everyone. He has tried in the past to learn how to supplement his lack of skill in reading other people's subtle emotions by learning the craft equivalent, but either because he can't grasp the concept mentally or is just naturally bad at it it's always dreadfully obvious what he's trying to do - which really defeats the purpose.
Life Story

Family:
Mother: Bethilde Hallman, Purple Dusk to Opal witch (b. 136 AP)
Father: Erik Hallman, Summer Sky to Opal Prince (b. 133 AP)
Siblings:
  • Damyan Hallman, Yellow to Rose Prince (b. 158 AP, twin brother; died at age 22)
  • Elisia Hallman, Tiger Eye to Rose hearth witch (b. 160 AP, died at age 20)
  • Gerrund Hallman, Tiger Eye to Purple Dusk Warlord (b. 168, died at age 22)
History:

Bethilde and Erik Hallman raised their small brood in a sturdy cabin high in the mountains where they raised and trained snow dogs. They were not believers in the Dark Religion and regarded those they dealt with who were followers with amiable wariness, especially as all but their oldest walked away from their Birthright Ceremonies with light Jewels.

As was the way of polite society, however, few made any point or effort to single out the children or treat them any differently in their brief interactions. Perhaps if they had faced adversity earlier on in their lives, the Hallman children would have been more prepared for the trials that would face them later in life. They were by no means raised in ignorance of the way their society was split, but for the first twenty-two years they were largely untouched by it.

For his part, Finn loved his family dearly and never saw anything off or odd or wrong with his siblings. They had lighter Jewels, yes, but they worked just as hard as he did. They all did their part contributing to their family, to the little village several miles down the mountain, to the dogs that they cared for. If anything, he felt a heavier responsibility on himself to look out for them - but as to whether that was because he was the oldest (if even by three minutes in the case with him and his twin) or because he was the darkest Jeweled was never a distinction he made.

The change happened fast, and hard, and painfully.

Elisia had recently returned from her Offering with the Rose and twins had planned a day to celebrate with her in the city. It was a far journey normally, but they had splurged and rented a carriage, which Finn drove along the Red - turning a several-hour trip into a short jaunt that would leave them an entire day of indulgence.

While in the city, Finn parted from his siblings only briefly to step into a shop and purchase something for their mother. By the time he returned to the street both of his siblings were dead. Later, he would find out that an Opal Prince had made an advance on Elisia, and Damyan had interfered. What started off as a snarling argument quickly escalated to a fight. The Prince did not waste time with punches and instead slammed him with the full power of his Opal. In a contest between Opal versus Rose, Opal always won. Elisia had merely gotten in the way and was felled as well.

He did not see the fight, only their bodies and the Opal Prince standing above them. Finn did not need the strength of his Red to subdue the other man, and cut him down with the power of his own two hands alone. Unfortunately, the man belonged to the Province Queen and the situation would not end there. Murder was not illegal - but a Price would always be owed. The life of her dark Jeweled bonded male was deigned to be worth more than the two light Jeweled lives he had slain - and Finn still owed a debt.

His sentence was to serve in place of the man he had slain, though at a lower level. Thus began his career within the Courts.

He was hauled off to serve before he could even send word to his family that their two middle children were dead, and he was stricken with grief and disbelief potent enough the all it took was a muted threat against whatever family he had left for him to comply.

It was while he was serving in the Province Queen's Court that he got to know Maarika. In her, he was able to find a Queen that he thought perhaps would be worthy of service. Someone who could be true to Glacia's heart. Which was why, when the Province Queen retired some years later and Maarika was chosen to take her place - it took no more than a simple request for him to accept the position as her Master of the Guard. Perhaps he had not initially joined the Province Court by choice, but while he was there he had learned a great many things - and saw the offer to join Maarika as a way to help protect the Glacia he loved and the people he loved therewithin. He was not a combative person, but a defender - and that, he believed, was what Glacia needed.

It was almost ten years to the day that his twin and younger sister were slaughtered that another horrible personal tragedy struck. Prompted by an anonymous note sealed with blood, Finn took sudden leave of the Seat in the middle of the night, heading for his mountain home. When he arrived, his parents had both been broken of their Offerings, reducing them to their light Jeweled Birthrights. His youngest brother, Gerrund, was missing. It took him two days to track where his brother had been taken, and when he arrived he was uncharacteristically ready to slaughter just about anyone who got in his way. Instead, he was subdued with poisons and drugs, the culprits having being lying in wait, ready for him when he arrived. They knew exactly who they were dealing with and were prepared for him.

The group about about twenty-five men and women were extremist followers of the Dark Religion. Gerrund had caught their interest because he had spoken up against the Religion within earshot of the wrong person. When they had discovered his brother was Master of the Guard to a Province Queen, they had decided to take it upon themselves to make sure such corruption was not polluting one of their precious Queens. Using a cocktail of drugs and compulsion craft, they manipulated Finn into first breaking, then slaughtering his own baby brother. Upon realizing what he had done, Finn did what most Warlords never do even once in their lifetime and he hit the killing edge. When he came out of the haze, everyone was dead.

It was almost a weak before he stumbled back to Court - having ignored every psychic attempt at contact in the interim questioning his whereabouts. Even when he returned he did not answer. In fact, he was hardly himself. He was moody, angry, snappish and violent. Those who knew him well and cared about him were worried - but whenever they tried to speak to him about it he just... was not the Finn they knew. It was Maarika who figured out that there was something fundamentally wrong, that something in his mind had snapped. It was Maarika, with the aid of the Court Seer that mended his mind. Once they knew what they problem was, they piece by piece put him back together again.

It's something they do not talk about, and Finn still doesn't know how much Maarika was able to piece together from what she saw while she was inside his mind. Nor can he remember what he did or what he was like during those months when his mind was fractured.

Since then, he has remained even closer to Maarika's side. He knew before the rest of her Court that she was also a Black Widow, and was also fairly confident on her views of the light Jeweled and the Dark Religion long before the day she brought her inner circle together to lay everything out on the table. Now in Nharkava - he prays that he can protect her, and serve her, and through that perhaps also play a role in rescuing Glacia from the darkness that has gripped her soul.

Character in Play:

He'd been asleep.

The night was a cherished time for Finn. It was a time of rest, a time of quiet. Most of the time he relished in that dark quiet - a time where he didn't have to focus on any one thing in particular, a time where the likelihood of him having to interact with someone was next to nil. With the night came sleep - and while sometimes he was still haunted by plaguing ghosts from the past, he was usually able to rest peacefully in the dark quiet he cherished.

Which was why the first emotion that filtered through him upon his sudden waking was confusion. He didn't realize, at first, that what had woken him was the subtle triggering of his wards. The moment he did, however, he was wide awake and on full alert - sliding from the bed and to his feet, a shield in place and a small blade in hand even as he crouched near the bed and honed his attention in on the window without losing awareness of the rest of the room.

There was no one there.

Not one to be fooled by appearances, Finn probed gently.

Nothing. But there was the brush of psychic residue and the quivering along his wards that told him that perhaps no one was there now but someone or something had just been there recently. Another probe.

They had left something behind.

Drawing himself up to his full height, an intimidating stature before most men, he strode to the window and lifted the thrice-folded note that had been wedged under it from the outside. Before he opened it he peered out through the glass even though he knew it was unlikely he was going to see anything. Whoever had put the note there just now likely did it from a distance and with a very fine and deliberate use of craft. Impressive, and concerning.

Not a man of many words, Finn did not waste breathe speaking to himself or musing aloud as to what the note might be. The only way to know that was to reading, so that was what he did.

Did you know that your parents are traitors?

His whole body went very, very still. He kept reading.

They paid their Price tonight. Now your brother will pay his. If you are worthy of your position, Finn Hallman, you will understand. If you are not, then your corruption will be burned out as well.

He did not pack. He did not give word. He didn't even bother going out the front door. He vanished the letter, shoved his feet into the nearest boots he could find - and he left through the doors near the kitchen - his rooms being only just above them and right beside the stair. Inside him was a dark and fretful fury, a mixture of fear and rage and a dark and horrible knowing that whatever he found when he reached home... it would not be the smiling faces of the family he joined this Court to continue to protect.

Your Jewel ratio is currently at 1:3. You need to bring it to 1:2 (or buy a ratio slot) before Finn can be put into play. Reply to this thread again when you've done so and we'll get him up and running.

Finn's good to go, now.
