Appearance

Play By: Lara Pulver
Distinguishing Features:
Her skin is gold, but not so golden that Eyriens approve.  Her eyes are obviously more gold than brown... but not enough to sate her father's people.  Her hair is too... Rhilander for her to fit in well with her father's people.  The red highlights amongst the dark strands are all too evident in witchlight and sunlight both.  Worse - she has no wings, as well as the scars to prove it.  Of course, she did have wings once... but her wings were too malformed to function and were finally removed when she was a young girl.
She's too Eyrien for most Rhilanders' tastes as well.  Her hair just a few shades too dark, and no amount of strange highlighting helps.  The gold of her eyes is too bright to dismiss, not to mention the odd shape and formation of her features.  She's too willowy, too tall, too... everything.  Rather than dwell in a pit of despair over this, Lissi has made a habit of dressing well and highlighting her oddities.  She always wears a pleasant smile, and has a pleasant manner of speech.
These habits of hers have made her very easy to approach for Communion or other troubles... because surely someone so Outcast on every side will not judge those who come to her for guidance.

Personality

Personality:
There is a softness to the outward demeanor, and voice, of Eliisa Lykke that belies the inner fortitude she's had to build.  She comes across as somewhat soft spoken, with movements that are deliberate and graceful so as to evoke a sense of peace and calm.  Some see her as a mountain unassailable, others as a gentle river that simply moves forward and finds a way around whatever obstacles may be in her path.

She approves of that last allegory, as she finds that with patience any hard-headed person can be worn down to at least negotiate in a situation.

These studied traits disguise the all-too-aware of danger woman beneath the surface.  Her father is a harsh male, and Eyrien besides.  She learned at a young age the behaviors least likely to set off his temper, and she cultivated them well past adulthood.    Because of this, she has a manner that makes people aware that she is focused upon them - and most interpret this as having her complete attention whenever they are in her presence.  Most of the time, this is even true.

Beyond these immediacies, however, lies a mind that is truly in love with history.  She loves collecting the stories of her people, as well as the stories of those she comes across in Dea al Mon.  There are obvious signs of joy and pleasure when she is helping others connect to the Darkness from which they are all born.

For the supplicants that come to her in need, there is little she will not do to assist.  And if anything were to threaten those same Supplicants while they are with her, she will cajole, fight, and die to guard them in their need.  The only way to ensure that others have faith in themselves is to be willing to prove that she has faith of her own.  She lives by the idea that she should model the very strength of spirit she wishes to instill in others... no matter how difficult the task.

Likes:
  • 1.  Clothing -  Everything from the simplest work garment to the most elaborate court gown is something she treasures.  She wears things that are both comfortable and beautiful;  she also tries to find things that highlight her odd appearance and make her more exotic rather than strange.  She follows a simple motto.  "Never Forget What You Are.  The World Will Not."  So why not flaunt it?  From the makeup that highlights the strange shape of her eyes to the clothing that accentuates the curve of her shoulders, she likes showing off her appearance.
  • 2.  Communion -  The All-Mother, the Night Mother, the Darkness... whatever her name, she doesn't care about race or purity of Blood.  She only cares that her supplicants have faith and act accordingly.  In the depths of communion, Eliisa truly feels loved.  It is a rare sensation, and one she treasures above all others.
  • 3.  Dogs -  There are few creatures able to so quickly make her smile.. but dogs are definitely at the top of the list.  With very little effort, a dog will befriend you and be loyal beyond reason.  She has been known to find strays, rehabilitate them, and grant them to families most in need of companionship.  If not for how often she had to travel, she would have a dog of her very own... alas, she is unwilling to burden others with the need to transport an animal along with herself whenever she is needed.
Dislikes:
  • 1.  Forbidden Things - Very little is truly forbidden by the All-Mother... so the idea that someone else will forbid anything from her is almost a guaranteed way to earn her ire.  Whether it be from her Father forbidding her from bedding a particular male to the Prohibitions forbidding her from bedding a woman... she despises the very concept of 'forbidden'.  Only the All Mother's tenets should be followed with such severity... and no Religious text she has copied or read has ever stated such things as being 'forbidden'.
  • 2.  Banging, Booms -  Generally speaking, sudden loud noises have never meant anything good in her home.  The sudden clattering of pots and pans is just as likely to have her going still as a loud yell.  The sudden urge to sink into the floor, or hide in a closet, is something that has stuck with her even into her seventies.  Those who scoff at the idea of an angry sounding pot being set on a stove top have never had to listen to it.
  • 3.  Mornings -  Point of fact, she despises mornings.  Her work often has her up at all hours of the night... and if she sees the dawning light against the east, she is instantly rather grumpy about it.  Dawn's early rays are her nemesis... and she would gladly shut them out of her life entirely.
Fears:
  • 1.  Her Father - Jovaar was not the kindest of males on the best of days.  His coupling with her mother having created her... with mangled wings, was blamed equally on her own inadequacies rather than on an accident of birth. It has never occurred to her that he is more furious that his daughter will never have a real place amongst his people - to her there is just the knowledge that she is never 'good enough'. There is little that can cow her quite as quickly as the idea of her father coming to 'speak' with her... and the confident creature she is disappears when he actually appears while she tries frantically to think of how NOT to anger him.  Difficult, considering simply SEEING her seems to anger him.
  • 2.  Unseen Skies -  She's half Eyrien, and half Rhilander.  Home is in on the windswept plains, or traveling the mountains.  She's never been very fond of the deep caves, and while she finds Dea al Mon beautiful, the ever present canopy from the trees gives her a feeling of being caged and trapped.  She may never have learned to fly, but she still yearns for the open sky above her.  Being unable to see it for too long makes her twitchy.
  • 3.  Swimming -  When she was little, and her back still sore, her father was teaching her how to swim.  She failed, abysmally, at it.  He was so furious he plucked her up, and then dropped her further out in the lake.  He told her 'you'll figure it out'.  HE was right... she did learn how to swim.  Quickly towards shore.  Ever since, she has had an aversion to lakes and rivers.  The idea of actually having to swim speeds her pulse.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1.  Blood Magic - Using blood magic ensures that Lissi is able to truly protect the Chalice of those she leads into the Abyss.  Whether it is for a Birthright Ceremony, an Offering, or Communion, she always uses a bit of her blood to ensure that the tie between herself and the supplicant is stronger than it would be without.
  • 2 .  Preservation Craft -  Part of her job is the recording of events.  She learned in her thirties that snow and rain have little care for how much work a Priestess might put into creating legible records... and so she put in the effort to learn how to best Preserve books and papers so that nothing natural could possibly harm their contents.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1.  Warming/Cooling Spells -  Others would see this as not being too problematic... but those people don't live near the mountains, where temperatures can plummet terribly at night.  THOSE people don't have to worry about freezing to death while tending to their altars... because everyone seems to love their altar being somewhere either deep in a cave or out on some windswept plateau.  If Lissi wants to have a decent temperature about her... she needs to dress appropriately, or have someone else with her who can manage these spells.
  • 2.  Travel Craft - Having to pay others to take her wherever she needs to go is... embarrassing.  But she'd rather not fall out of the Winds in the middle of nowhere.  And it's happened before.  THAT was even more embarrassing, and almost fatal.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother: Mera Lykke - White to Rose - Witch - 85 AP
Father:  Jovaar Yvase - Yellow to Rose - Warlord Prince - 612 BP

    Cousins:
Aalut Lykke - White to Tiger Eye - Warlord -  158 AP
Bastyen Lykke - Purple Dusk to Opal - Warlord -  156 AP
Rodulf Lykke - Summer Sky to Purple Dusk - Prince - 160 AP

    History:
Mera Lykke was a lovely woman in her youth.  She was known for her singing, and her gentle nature with the beasts that she sheared.  She was a spinner, and a weaver of tales.  She would teach the youth while she darned wool and teach them of the ways to live true to custom while still being at peace with their Eyrien conquerors.

She continued to do this, even after Jovaar Yvase Rutted on her.  True, she was a bit more careful.  And true, she was not as likely to smile when speaking of the Eyriens that flew above them.. but she continued to live her life.  Even after that three day spurt of hell resulted in a pregnancy.

She could have ended it... but she chose to honor what the All-Mother had given her.  The result months later was Eliisa Lykke -  and Jovaar was present.  He was not happy about it, but he was present.  His conscience did not allow him to ignore the birth of a child born of his Rut, even if he was displeased that his Rut had focused on a short-lived woman amongst the Walkers of his territory.

He was even more displeased when he saw the mangled wings of his child.  Her mother managed to convince him to wait for a few years to see if she could straighten it out with the help of healers... and so her wings weren't removed until she was five.  Her father was furious that she had 'failed' at healing her wings... and he never failed to let her know of it.

As much as he seemed to terrify her mother, Mera seemed fond of Jovaar and his aggression.  She also approved of the fact that he was willing to be present throughout her daughter's life, going so far as to grant Jovaar paternity at her Birthright, but he never truly lived with them.  For this, Eliisa counted many blessings.  He terrified her.  Oh, he never beat her without just cause... but she wished on many occasions that he would just get it out of his system.  Surely that would be better than the constant state of anxiety that she wore against her skin whenever he was around.  Surely it would be better than the hyper awareness of the tone of his voice or the way he moved.

It did have its blessings, that awareness.  She became quite adept at reading body language.  She learned how to be a smooth talker, and a graceful creature despite the strange scars on her back and shoulders.  She learned how to soothe even her father's temper, after a while... though she was far less confident in doing so with him than with others.

And so she lived her life.  She took her training in her Caste, and she administered to the many Rhilanders that sought counsel or solace.  She became a bit of a traveler, never settling at any particular Altar and choosing, instead, to go where she was needed most.  She loved to set up new altars, and she adored teaching new children.

After Kalvar Elbremov took over Rhiland with all of his Black Fury, she tended to the concerns and worries of her people.  Prince Elbremov was not showing any signs of being a true Tyrant.  Kalvar Elbremov was destroying the Jhinka and ensuring that the Rhiland people were able to truly live within their customs again.  Surely the Black Eyrien Prince was not all bad, and they should not be so concerned about it.  What were the risks that the average Rhilander would have to even SEE Kalvar anyways?

Often people left her more at ease than they arrived... and so she grew to enjoy giving her people solace about the odd turn in their leaderships as well. Wherever she went she had to rehash the same conversation.  From the Altai District to the Svendai District.. which is where everything went to hell.

Unfortunately for her, her father had separate beliefs in regards to the future of Rhiland.  He joined the Rebellion, and believed that his Priestess daughter should service his cause as well.  She refused to follow him.  He spent a few days trying to convince her of how her knowledge of history would be of great use in ensuring peace for her people.  He took the time to explain to her that her ability with ceremonies would be necessary to assist his people's children in their needs..  She still refused.  If she hadn't known better, she'd have thought he was trying to protect her or keep her close; but she knew full well her father held little love for her.  He threatened and postured... and so she took off.  Escaping her father and his comrades was more difficult than she would like to admit.  Really all that saved her was her depth in the Abyss compared to theirs.  Her best bet was the mountain paths... and she took them.

It was better, in her mind, to risk death in her mountains than to service a group which would continue to oppress her mother's people.  No, the Eyriens hadn't been all terrible in their rulings.. but they had been terrible enough that she was unwilling to help return her homeland to the state in which it had existed for so many years.  She was unwilling to assist in returning her mother's people to the fears for their Queenly daughters and the slow destruction of what truly made them a people.

She lost track of time in her escape through the mountains... every time she tried to take one of the more open paths to find a way back to civilization, she would hear the beat of wings.  After a few days, it wasn't just the Eyriens in the Mountains that were a problem... the Jhinka lived amongst the rocks as well.  She grew hungry and weak with thirst... but refused to stop moving.  She had to keep going, had to find a way out.

But the mountains were not somewhere she went on her own typically speaking... and without being able to get a good look at where she was, she quickly got turned around.  She knew she must have gone north in the range, because snow and terrible cold had started to become more regular.  If she'd had to make a guess, she'd have thought she was nearing Scythia... but she was terrible at warming spells.  In desperation, she needed to stay deeper in the caves at night. She'd taken refuge in such a cave when she heard it...  a soft noise that drew her attention further into the darkness.  Maybe she was dying.  Maybe it was just a pleasant illusion that the All-Mother was weaving to let her fold gently and with less pain into the Darkness.

Either way, she rose to her feet and followed that sound.  She stumbled through the dark of the cave for minutes... hours... days?  And then she felt a pop in the back of her head... and she fell into grass.  Warm, sweet grass.  It left her gasping, confused... and she rolled over to blink in surprise at the odd trees above her.

She had no idea where she was... but she knew she was not dead.  She could hear the sound of running water... and for that, she eagerly crawled through the grass to drink at the water.  To gulp at its sweetness and relish in the renewed sense of life it gave her.  She was not dead!  She had no idea WHERE she was.. but she was not dead.  She couldn't know she'd stumbled through a weakened border spell into Dea al Mon.  She couldn't know that she was currently on the border of the Devinos Province... hell, she didn't even KNOW about the Dea al Mon at all.

She was in for a hell of a surprise when her rescue showed up.  She'd never heard of the strange race of people that lived her, for she'd never heard of this place at all.  Their predatory movements reminded her of the Eyriens she'd been escaping from.. but they had no wings.  Their ears were a bit odd, and their teeth a little sharper.. but it was the sheer ferocity they seemed to exude that surprised her.

Despite that strange sensation, they were all too eager to greet her.  She was fed, clothed... and told she would be escorted to Nieste, the capitol of their Territory.  There, she was to meet with their Territory Queen.  No matter how many questions she asked as to WHY she would need to meet their Territory Queen, she was not given an answer.  She was simply told that the Capitol could answer her questions better than the strange people in red cloaks that had found her.

Strange as the circumstances are... she's grateful to be safe from her father and his men.  And she is curious about the place she seems to have stumbled into, as if guided by the hand of the Mother herself.  The least she could do is explore the new circumstances.. and the odd people she has met in this new place.

    Character in Play:
"Rodulf."  She set a few pins into her hair, tilting her head this way and that to see if the braids and bun were able to remain in place.  SO far, so good.  She beamed, tightening her robe in place before rising to greet her cousin.  Well, second cousin.  Irregardless, he was family.  His hands clasped her own, her lips touching his beard-covered cheek in fondness.  "How have you been, cousin?"

    "... upset."

"Well that's hardly new."  She laughed, pulling him over to a couch to set him down.  She pat his hands before moving to her changing screen.  "Is it that woman again?"

    "She's pregnant now."

"Congratulations!"  She popped her head out the side, arching an eyebrow at him.  "I thought you loved her, Rodulf?"

    "I do!"

    "Then... why the upset?"

"What if I'm terrible at it?"  She watched as Rodulf looked at his hands, then sighed and finished buckling her dress into place before sweeping out, barefoot, from her changing screen.  She knelt at his feet, reaching up to take his hands.  "Rodulf... you can only do your best.  Show her and your child your heart and love... and trust in the All-Mother to guide you."

"You keep thinking the Darkness provides, Lissi... even after everything?"

"If not for the All-Mother, how would I be myself?"  She smiled, beamed, up at his face.  "Trust in her Grace, and trust that she has a plan for you and yours.  Do your best with the challenges granted you, and you will be rewarded with a joy unknown to you prior.  THAT is the promise that the All Mother gives to each parent."

She raised Rodulf's fingers to her lips, laying gentle kisses across his knuckles.  "You'll do fine, little cousin.  Everything will be fine. Shall we pray together?"

"I was wondering when you would ask."

She laughed quietly, drawing him up from the couch.  "Come.  Let us be away to the altar.  A little time with the All-Mother will grant you peace that, it seems, I cannot grant to you alone."
