The Basics

Character Name: Emiliana Calandra
Nicknames:  Emmy, Lark
Age and Birth Year:  2506 (BP 2313)
Race:  long-lived
Caste:  Healer Queen
Birth Territory:  Hayll, Terrielle
Home Territory: Hayll, Terrielle

Birthright Jewel: Rose
Offering Jewel:  Purple Dusk

Role: Queen of Mutina District, Faro Province

Appearance

Play By: Lisa Bonet
Distinguishing Features:  Emiliana would be considered a beautiful, earthy woman with her sun kissed skin, high cheekbones, well muscled frame, and graceful bearing – if one could get past the body odor and untamed dreadlocks that is.

Personality

Personality:

Emiliana values her connection to the land as her most valuable asset and is often seen wandering barefoot about her homestead having conversations with the land, the plants, and animals she encounters as if they all could speak Hayllian fluently. She considers the Land her best friend and lover, frequently communing by rolling naked through freshly plowed fields, mud puddles, and open meadows. She has a very mellow disposition with an easy laugh and she is unabashedly friendly, smiling frequently to both friends and strangers alike. This warmth and welcoming attitude make her stand apart from most other Queens in Hayll.

Emmy's patience, love, and kindness also extend to the Landens in her care as well. She views them as the “hands of the Mother”, working the land and tending the crops that sustain the lives of Landen and Blood alike. During the Harvest, she is frequently found working from dawn until dusk side-by-side with the farmers to bring in the crops, singing the traditional songs and drinking and dancing at the festivals that follow with complete abandon. She is often called the People's Queen due to her ability to relate so easily to the plight of the Landens and the non-Aristo Blood under her rule, sometimes drawing the ire of the Aristos in Mutina.

Emiliana's Healer side comes to the forefront when she finds either humans or animals in distress. Some say her intimate connection to the land is what makes her potions, balms, and teas so powerful, but no matter the conjecture surrounding her Healing Craft, no one can deny the results. This makes her a much sought after instructor in the Healing Arts, and she is more than willing to share her knowledge and skills with people she deems worthy of the Arts. The downside for her students is the demanding regiment of instruction, practical application, learning retreats, and (to everyone's dismay) one-on-one instruction with the smelliest Hayllian they've ever had the misfortune to be trapped in a confined space with.

Likes:
  • The Great Outdoors – Emmy would spend every waking moment outdoors if the demands of ruling Mutina didn't interfere. She frequently schedules her meetings out in the herb gardens or at the seaside as these places are most comfortable for her. She swims, hikes, gardens, and explores the vineyards throughout Mutina, keeping close tabs on the health of the people, the livestock, and the land.
  • Teaching – her fame as and exceptional Healer has made her a sought after instructor, and she has found a lot of personal fulfillment, enjoyment and pride in her students' success. She also feels proud to be passing on her knowledge to the next generation of Healers.
  • Naturalism – Emiliana is a nudist, and spends much of her free time in her natural state. Of course, she takes into account the sensitivities of others and will don loose, flowing clothing styles for court, classes, and other public events as needed.

    Dislikes:
  • Small minded people – love and acceptance are key tenants of her life, and she struggles to understand and deal with those who cling to race, faction, or other non-beneficial to the whole community ideals. This is part of the reasoning behind her policy of “leave your faction alliances at the door” when taking on students. Emmy feels we can all learn and grow from exposure to as many different people of different backgrounds as one can find.

  • Protocol – Emmy admits that some protocol is necessary, but finds the demands of formal court life stifling to her creativity and spirit. Yes, the rules surrounding the interactions between men and women and between the castes and jewels help keep tempers and egos in check, but the constant jockeying for attention and ladder climbing she sees (even within her own court mind you) doesn't sit well with her ideals for peaceful interactions between all the peoples of Mutina. Besides, she has to wear shoes when she attends court in other Provinces.

  • Wastefulness – Conservation of resources, be it food, products, people, energy, etc., rate high on Emiliana's list of necessary traits not only for herself and her court, but for all who enter her lands. The health of the land and the people of Mutina rests on the balance of give and take, growth and harvest, building and destruction, and communication and silence. She strives to use only what is needful in all manners to make her impact on the world around her as minimal as possible, so when dignitaries from other lands come to visit they are sometimes shocked at the austerity of offerings in Emiliana's court. She is also mindful about her choice of words and can weighs them carefully before speaking her thoughts.

    Fears:

  • Plague – Having both Healer and Queen caste since childhood, Emmy has had nightmares of and epidemic taking hold in her small corner of the Territory where the suffering throngs of people would be looking to her not only for leadership but for healing as well. She envisions herself pushing to use the very last drop of her Jewel strength and all of her healing knowledge just to fail her people, leaving her alone among the piles of rotting corpses with only the carrion birds to keep her company.

  • Being lost to the earth – Lark strives to use her Queen's Gift to the best of her ability and for the greatest good of all the people in her own Districts and the greater Province, but she secretly fears that the Darkness will judge her lacking and take the Queen's Gift from her, cutting her off from the call and connection to the land that she has come to value so highly. This has made her somewhat superstitious, starting each morning with a prayer and small offering to the land, even during her Moon time despite the prohibitions against it and the horrendous pain she feels during that moment of magic. She figures it is a small price to pay to continue to be in good favor with the Darkness, but she knows it is considered anathema so she never mentions it or teaches it to her students.

  • War – Emiliana grew up during the Great War and survived the Purge thanks to the sacrifice of her parents. Part of growing up as a Queen-child was to be exposed to the harsh realities of young men and women dying under Eyrien blades as death reigned from the skies, all at the order of their Queen. The guilt and burden of their passing weighed heavily on Emiliana's conscience despite the responsibility not being her own. She vowed to herself that when she came to rule, she would try to negotiate peace at every turn as long as the people and the land didn't bear the cost too greatly. The trauma and losses from the Purge also weigh into this fear as many of her friends and family members were lost under Witch's wrath.

    Craft Strengths:

  • Queen's gift – Ever since Lark was knee high to a grasshopper, she could hear the call of the Land. At first, she believed what her parents told her, that it was all in her imagination, but soon the draw to  nourish the land became obvious even to them. Lark has spent years cultivating a deep, personal, spiritual, and oft times sexual relationship with the lands of Mutina. She considers the Land to be an intelligent, cognizant, self-aware being that lives in conjunction with the lives of the people who care for the land, and interacts with accordingly. She has even called the Land her lover on occasion, lying naked in moonlit fields, blessing the sowing of the grain not only with her blood, but with the energy of her self-stimulated orgasm.

  • Curing disease (human & animal) – It has been said that Emmy's gift with herbs may be tied to her deep connection to the land itself, and she would agree wholeheartedly. She found that the Healing Arts  are a complementary gift to her queenly caste, uniting the gifts the land has to give with her deep-seated desire to help people and animals to live healthy, happy, and productive lives. Emiliana studied diligently, almost obsessively at times, striving to become the highly skilled, widely read, and most knowledgeable Healer in all of Hayll in order to serve her people and her land to the best of her ability. Her real specialty, if she were pushed to define one, would be the healing of disease in both humans and animals. She understands bodies and the mechanisms of disease as both individual ecosystems and their interactions with each other in ways that few others have been able to fully comprehend. This benefits her patients in that she can go to the root source of the disease and cure or control the process faster than most any other healer in Hayll.

    Craft Weaknesses:

  • Queen's Touch – Emiliana was so fascinated by her own abilities and connection to the land that she never really spent much time learning or developing her Queen's Touch skills. This lack of ability to soothe and calm her males through touch means that she is not able to keep her boyos under tight control when their anger slips the leash. Luckily, Emmy has a  very mellow personality and disposition which has a calming effect all of its own, so this  rarely has been an issue. It does have the potential of blowing up in her face if there ever were a serious confrontation between her court and outsiders, so Emmy tries to minimize this potential by scheduling her meetings in serene surroundings and being as even-keeled as possible.

  • Reverse Healing – The idea of intentionally causing harm to a living being is so distasteful to Lark that it has made this craft skill one of her biggest weaknesses. Even when it is in the best interest of the patient, like when needing to re-set a broken bone, undoing the healing of another witch is extremely difficult and trying for Emiliana. She has been known to turn pale, sweat profusely, and breathe rapidly almost to the point of hyperventilating when presented with these tasks. It is a very strange reaction for a Healer of Emmy's skill level, but the panic she feels overwhelms her normally stoic professionalism and makes her a nervous wreck. She also hates to criticize the skills levels of other people in the field in front of her patients, knowing that this is not only in poor taste, but potentially makes her patients feel uneasy about letting her treat the failed healing, all of which plays into her panic-reactions.

    Life Story

    Family:
Mother:Cassandra Calandra, White to Tiger Eye Healer, deceased.
Father: Emilio Calandra III, Yellow to Tiger Eye Warlord, deceased.
    Siblings:
Mario Calandra, Yellow to Rose Warlord (deceased).
Luigi Calandra White to Tiger Eye Warlord (BP 3085)
Guido Calandra Yellowto Tiger Eye Warlord  (BP 2809)

    History:

The Padrino of the Calandra family was Emilo Calandra the First who passed into Darkness in the year   Cassandra had come be pregnant with her last child. Although not born into the Calandra family, she had come to love the Padrino dearly, treating him like her own grandfather. She and her husband decided to honor his passing by naming their soon to be born child after him, continuing on the family tradition.

To Cassandra and Emilio's delight, little Emmy was a mellow child with a sweet and gentle disposition. Something in stark contrast to the loud, bombastic, and incredibly kinetic sons they were also blessed with. Emmy was always drawn to the outdoors, frequently wandering off on adventures in the woodlands, fields, and beaches near their home. She also showed great compassion and care for animals of all sorts, often bringing home injured animals and nursing them back to health which pointed to her future as a healer. It was difficult to pin Emmy down long enough to complete her school work although she was intelligent and a gifted student. The shuffling of papers and sitting indoors reading and writing just didn't captivate her attention the way the natural world outside did. Her father often scolded her for “larking about” rather than studying, which became the source of her nickname Lark, one she still proudly uses with friends and students to this very day.

Emmy was a popular child at school, a natural born leader with a charisma that drew others in and a personality that was kind and endearing. For some strange reason, her opinion seemed to really matter amongst her friends and classmates, and they often deferred to her wishes when choosing games to play. Emiliana never thought too much about this, and it never occurred to her to press this advantage to manipulate the other children. It just wasn't in her nature to be cruel or self-absorbed, even after her Birthrite ceremony when she came away with the Rose much to her parent's surprise.

It was just a few years after that when a new teacher was employed at the local school that Emiliana's parents were called in for a private conversation with the teacher. Miss Julianna Giordano had come out to the country to enjoy a slower pace of life and to teach, leaving behind a failed marriage in the capital city. She had spent years teaching Blood children from every sort of background, and thought she had seen everything until coming to Mutina. During a very carefully worded discussion, she broached the idea that little Emiliana may actually be one of the rare dual-cast females in Hayll. Julianna confirmed her suspicions with corroborating reports from Emmy's parents about her adeptness with healing animals and the evidence of the girl's leadership in the classroom. Mellow little Emiliana was going to become a Healer Queen someday, and she would need training in both disciplines starting as soon as possible.

Cassandra and Emilio were gobsmacked, to say the least. They had always suspected that Lark was destined to learn the Healing Arts, but they'd had no idea that there was even a possibility of something more. Never in either of their family lines had there ever been a Queen before, and they were at a complete loss as to what to do from that point forward for Emmy's education. Over the next couple of weeks, with the help of Miss Giordano, they were able to make arrangements for Emiliana to study under a highly reputable healer working within the Province court of Mutina, and the Province Queen herself would take Emiliana on as a student as well come Autumn. The summer of her 12th year was bittersweet for Lark, knowing that at summer's end she would be leaving everything and everyone she knew. She spent as much time on the water as in the woods that summer, sailing and fishing with her brothers and daydreaming of things to come.

The next years flew by as Emmy was submerged in a world of study, excelling as a student in both healing and protocol to the pride of her family and mentors. Despite her achievements, Emmy struggled to balance the requirements of protocol and court life with her internal desire for freedom and tranquility. She longed for the ability to run free through the woods or swim in the open ocean with only the Hayllian sun clothing her body. She took to being naked within the confines of her quarters as much as possible and remaining barefoot at every conceivable moment as a way to cope with this desire. She still smiles to this day at the expressions on her escort and the Priestesses faces when she came to her Offering Ceremony wearing nothing more than her Rose about her neck.

Emerging from the Darkness with the Purple Dusk gave Emiliana a great boost of confidence in herself and her ability to serve her land and her people someday. This new found internal fortitude helped her become more authentically herself than she'd ever permitted herself before. She scheduled herself time alone in the gardens and wood surrounding the Mutina court halls, and embraced Nature in all her glory. The signature dreadlocks and flowing garments originated from this time of self-exploration, as did her private rituals with the land and her much frowned upon habit of not bathing regularly. Not even a direct order from the Queen could change Emmy's new level of connectedness, though on occasion she would bathe or don shoes when attending important court meetings just to keep the peace.

As the years passed, Mutina remained largely isolated from the politics and struggles of the rest of Hayll being mostly an agricultural region, but the rumors of pending war were heard even in this backwater land. The Eyriens were said to be invading Hayll, killing men, women, and children indiscriminately. Emmy's tutelage as a Queen was still a work in progress, but her skills as a Healer were on par with many of the more experienced Healers in the area, and this is where she could best serve her people during this time of great need.

For three years, Emmy worked side by side with other healers, sharing knowledge and techniques they developed with each other readily in the name of saving lives before the Eyrien forces overcame and conquered their lands. What came next is the stuff of nightmares, the mass genocide of the Hayllian people at the hands of the new rulers, and Emiliana still carries the emotional scars of this event. She had never imagined anything so brutal in her worst dreams. Nothing in her training as either a Healer nor a Queen had prepared her for the annihilation of so many souls at once. Little did she know that this was a harbinger of more pain to come.

When the Purge struck, Emiliana happened to be home visiting her parents. As the waves of power crashed into the land, Emmy looked to her parents wide-eyed with terror. There was no comfort for her there as their own eyes shown brightly with fear as well. Her Father took control, ordering them into the root cellar, thinking to hide from it like a powerful spring storm. As they huddled in the back corner, her father's arms encircling the two women as he spoke words of comfort and reassurances, Emmy followed her father's advice and thought about riding the waves like a boat on the sea. As she struggled to relax, the energy of the bare earth in the cellar reached out to her and enveloped her, making her feel like a bobber on a fishing line, being tossed about by the waves.

When the strike was finally over, Emmy came back to the world feeling the sudden loss of entirely too many lives, including those of her parents. Emmy emerged from the cellar like a shell-shocked warrior, stumbling down the lane way to lend her aid as a Healer to any and all in need. Over the next few weeks, she helped organize the people of her village into groups that provided each other shelter, food, water, and burial for the dead with great help from the Landens in the area.

News traveled slowly now, so each day brought more words of sorrow and loss. Thousands of Hayallian Blood had been wiped from the face of the earth in mere minutes, and news from afar said that throughout the realms the destruction had been just as devastating. The entire court of Mutina had been killed except for the Steward who lived with his Opal now broken. It was he who summoned Emiliana to the District throne, but it was the people of her little corner of Mutina that rallied behind her in support. Emiliana, Emmy, Lark, (or by whatever name the people chose to call her), could not refuse the summons and took on the daunting task of healing her Land and her People with great humility.

The reconstruction of Mutina was a long and arduous process, but Emmy's open and accepting nature eased relations between the Blood and the Landens, making cooperative efforts out of the rebuilding process in her District. A new equilibrium was struck and the land and people began to prosper yet again under Emiliana's leadership.

    Character in Play:

Lark had spent the warm summer night sleeping naked under the stars and awoke to the siren song of the songbirds singing in the first rays of the morning light. She stretched languidly, enjoying the feel of the light coating of dew on her skin as muscle and bone moved underneath. The red skies a tangy smell of ionized air foretold a summer storm coming ashore in the next few hours, but for now, Lark would greet the Land as she did every morning. Rolling over onto her belly and raising her torso up to a kneeling position, Lark tipped her head to the sky, mouth open and breathed in the essence of the Land. She then placed her palms down upon the bare earth, lowering her forehead reverently to touch ever so gently upon the face of the Land that sustains all life. Once in this position, Lark offered her own energy entwined with the Rose and her Purple Dusk in thanks-offering to the Land itself.

So enraptured in the moment, Lark never heard the approach of the stag, unaware of his presence until his cold nose pressed gently to her flank in greeting. Moving slowly so as not to startle her new friend, Lark sat up and gazed in wonder at the seven tinged gentleman before her. A stillness descended upon the clearing, the birds now silent, the only sound the labored breathing of the stag. Tilting her head to look for obvious injury but finding none, Lark used her Healer's sensibilities to consider other possible sources of his discomfort. She reached out to touch the stag, cooing soothingly as she examined him. He was obviously in some distress and came to her for help.

His eyes were clear, but shiny and red rimmed as if with fever, but his nose had been cold. As she ran her hands down his flanks she found nothing, but once she reached his left back leg, she felt a swollen, hot mass just under the joint. She then focused her senses on this area and discovered that the gentleman must have stumbled into some pasture land at some point, cutting his leg on barbed wire. The cut had healed, but the rust and dirt had remained trapped, causing the swelling and infection. She would need to lance the wound and apply a poultice to heal it properly.

Lark sang a calming song to the stag as she retreated a small distance away to summon in her veterinary kit. He stood enraptured and calm, knowing she was going to help him. She selected the herbs, mixed them with fresh water and brought a scalpel and bandages back with her to tend to the stag. She continued singing quietly as she tried to send the poor creature images of what she needed to do, hoping that he would comprehend. She worked quickly and efficiently, lending her strength to ease the pain as she cleansed the abscess and applied the herbal concoction. She then dressed the area with gauze bandages, knowing that he'd likely rub them off within the hour, but she was nothing if not thorough.

She sat back and gave him one more reassuring stroke, before speaking her first words of the day. “There you are sir. You'll be right as rain in a few days. Now just try to stay out of trouble, eh?” The stag snorted once, then turned and bounded back into the undergrowth, disappearing again into the woods that they both called home.

“Is that what you're doing out here? Staying out of trouble?” groused the Master of her Guard, come to collect the Queen for an early breakfast meeting with dignitaries from Dena Nehele to negotiate the final terms of a large grain sale. For all his rough and tumble edges and years of experience, he was never comfortable with his Queen's nakedness. It always seemed to make him squeamish, a fact that Emmy chose to exploit on occasion. But the morning of an important meeting was not the time or place for fun and games so she let the opportunity pass her by and dressed quickly to follow him back to the meeting. ”Hardly a trouble at all” her only reply.
