Appearance

Play By: Alfonso Herrera
Distinguishing Features: For someone who has been through so much violence, Diejo is remarkably physically unscarred.

Personality

Personality:

On the surface, Diejo is a perfect aristo Prince. He's well educated, he's precise and methodical, organized and diligent. He learned how to play the part at a young age, rubbing elbows with Visanda's most prominent families at his father's parties. Diejo's command of Protocol is comprehensive, and he moves through formal social settings gracefully. The problems occur when he lands himself in a situation Protocol doesn't cover. Without strictly delineated social rules, Diejo flounders. He's too candid, or talks for too long about something that isn't interesting, or says all the wrong things. It's gotten worse since the war ended. After so many centuries of fighting, after the Purge, after decades of living rough in the mountains with Yago, relating to civilians is nearly impossible.

Crack his veneer of cold etiquette and you'll get witty, sarcastic humor that's nearly indistinguishable from Diejo's regular dry tone. He's kinder than might be expected given what he's been through, and he'll sacrifice himself for his people without thought.

The war, rebellion, and Purge left their scars on everyone, and Diejo is no exception. Tracking variables and assessing threats in every situation was a key to survival, but habits die hard. Diejo is hypervigilant and twitchy, always half expecting an Eyrien warrior to pop out from around a corner. Small noises send a stab of adrenaline through him, and anyone (friend or foe) who surprises him from behind will quickly find themselves with a knife at their throat or a fist to their jaw. Diejo's panic attacks aren't frequent, but they hit like a hurricane and leave behind a shaking, sobbing wreck, curled in a closet or under his desk. Nightmares are a more frequent concern, and between those and the insomnia Diejo hasn't had a full night's sleep in over a century.

His relationship with Yago is his stability. When the Purge hit and they slowly starved together in the Eyrien cell, psychic communication was their refuge. They sank deeper and deeper into each others' minds, clinging to each other as they waited to die. Though they were rescued, the bond they formed remains strong. Yago and Diejo rely on each other for everything now. They keep each other– not whole, but at least patched together well enough. Their psychic thread hums in the background of everything now, always open. They share information, pass thoughts back and forth, feel each other's emotions, sometimes experience each other's dreams. Every time Diejo and Yago have experimented with trying to separate themselves, it's ended in breakdowns and panic attacks. Whatever semblance of stability they have, it's because they've built it together.

Overall, Diejo craves structure. He had it as a child in the form of his father's strictness, at university, and as Alicia's escort. Even the chaos of the war had its own procedures and formalities. Since the Purge, Dhemlan has been crumbling. It's a shifting, changing territory, and Diejo hasn't yet found his place. He's no longer a Healer's escort, no longer a soldier or a scholar, and the aristocracy holds less and less power every day. Dhemlan must adapt or perish, and so must Diejo himself.

Likes:
  • Healers: There was Alicia, of course, but Diejo also made friends with a fair number of other Healers and their escorts. Their tenacity, dedication, and (often foolish) selflessness always impressed him, and he developed a lingering soft spot for the caste.
  • Codes: Diejo has had a mild obsession with secret codes since childhood, and his studies of cryptography in school only fueled that. Cracking a code is like nothing else: the frustration of puzzling over it, trying different solutions to no avail until it all suddenly clicks, enlightenment and satisfaction washing over him.
  • Payback: Vengeance is satisfying. Whether or not it's acceptable or right, it just is. Diejo doesn't revel in violence, but damn does it feel good to see someone get what's coming to them.

Dislikes:
  • Inefficiency: Nothing is more irritating than needless time-wasting. A good system is an efficient system, and inefficiency is unacceptable. Watching someone take extra steps to complete a task is physically painful for Diejo.
  • Goodbyes: Diejo has been left too many times. A goodbye is a period at the end of the sentence, an admittance that you might never see someone again. It feels like giving up.
  • Overconfidence: Cockiness gets people killed. It's what made Diejo dislike Yago so instantly when they first met, and something he still finds irritating after all this time. There is nothing outside the facts, no luck, no divine providence. Overconfidence is nothing more than foolish, dangerous superstition.

Fears:
  • Yago not needing him: Diejo and Yago are more than battle partners, more than friends, more than lovers. They've been there for each other at rock bottom, shared nightmares, clung to each other during panic attacks. But Yago is improving, slowly and steadily. One day, he won't need Diejo anymore, and then Diejo will be alone.
  • His father: Leonardo has always demanded perfection. He views his sons more as projects or achievements than as people, and when his children disappoint him, punishments are harsh and quick to come. Even as an adult who has seen some of the worst of what the world has to offer, there's little Diejo fears more than Leonardo's rage.
  • Being left behind: Dhemlan is changing, and Diejo is struggling to find a foothold. He can't leave the past behind while his trauma forces him to relive the war, threatens to make him a relic like so many other old soldiers. By Dhemlanese standards Diejo is still a young man, but he feels like he's lived a hundred lifetimes already. Reinventing himself all over again feels impossible, but rotting away while the world moves on around him is worse.

Craft Strengths:
Before he was Broken, Diejo was particularly good at Healing and Efficiency Craft. Now, without his jewels, he lacks the power to channel into his former skills. Most Basic Craft comes very easily to him, having had nearly two thousand years with his jewels, but he's particularly good at:
  • Emotional Projection. Diejo copes (or, doesn't cope) with his trauma by keeping himself tightly controlled. He projects an aura of calm, competent, and logical, no matter what's going on in his head.
  • Communication Craft. It's difficult for him to initiate psychic threads, but he can usually do it. Logically, Diejo knows that he's lucky he can do it at all, but compared to the depth of power he used to have, it's just frustrating and disappointing.

Craft Weaknesses:
  • Shielding. He was good at shielding, before. Now, the effects are so minimal that Diejo feels it's a waste of time and energy. A shield any Jeweled Blood could break through is nearly worthless, so why bother maintaining one? He's out of practice and bitter, and as a consequence his shields are weak and flickery.
  • Witchfire. Even when he had his Red, Diejo had to really concentrate to make fire. Now that he's Broken, he can barely even make sparks.

Life Story

Family:
  • Mother: Felisa Rios, Rose to broken Purple Dusk witch. b. 2584 BP, age 2777
  • Father: Leonardo Iglesias y Verdesio de Puerto Pomar,  Tiger Eye to Rose Warlord Prince, b. 3018 BP, age 3211.
  • Sibling: Leonardo Verdesio, Rose to broken Summer Sky Warlord Prince, b. 2005 BP, age 2198.
  • Healer: Alicia Iglesias, Opal to Green Healer. b. 1230 BP, d. 322 BP. (Also Diejo's 2nd cousin on his father's side.)
  • Life Partner: Yago Suerte, Yellow to Tiger Eye Prince, b. 1051 BP, age 1244.

History:

Puerto Pomar is a coastal town, known for its production of fine olive oil and its lemon groves.  It sits in southeast Belona, Visanda Province.

Diejo Verdesio is the second son of Prince Leonardo Iglesias y Verdesio de Puerto Pomar, an aristo politician and the owner of a sizeable percentage of Puerto Pomar's lemon and olive orchards. With his brother Leonardo Verdesio bearing the brunt of family expectations, Diejo was relatively free to pursue his own interests. He was a solemn and academic-minded child, and after receiving his Offering he was accepted to a prestigious university in Ardath. Diejo excelled there, and after graduation he landed a low-level administrative job in Visanda's provincial government.

His life changed when he met Alicia Iglesias at a boring aristo gala, hosted at the Verdesio family estate. The young Healer was a distant cousin on his father's side, and Diejo's connection with her was instantaneous. A few weeks later he agreed to become her escort. It wasn't love in a romantic sense: what Diejo felt for Alicia was devotion, a deep and lasting connection.

When the war with Askavi broke out, Alicia threw herself into service as a battlefield healer. Diejo never envisioned himself as any kind of soldier, but not following Alicia was never an option. She was fearless and determined, and he was hers. When the Treaty of Queens was signed, Diejo was thrilled. Implications for Dhemlan aside, this meant the end of Alicia's career as a combat medic, a return to the safety of working in a clinic. It didn't last long. The sheer injustice of the treaty just galvanized Alicia, and when she heard about Emerald Company she begged Diejo to join her in the resistance. It was the first real fight they'd ever had, but in the end Diejo followed her to Sarque. He always followed her.

Alicia threw herself into the fight like she was born to be a soldier. Diejo found himself adapting to the terrorist lifestyle surprisingly well: he excelled at tactics, helping Emerald Company to plan and execute complex attacks, and his knack for timing and planning helped Alicia infiltrate treacherous Eyrien strongholds. Alicia grew bolder and more ambitious with her missions, and eventually set her sights on taking out the Eyriens' largest base in Sarque.

It was just a reconnaissance mission. Diejo and Alicia were just scoping out the compound, taking note of weak points, in and out without getting noticed. The mission was a success, but on the way back they argued. It was too dangerous, Diejo said. There was no way to get out after setting the charges, it was a suicide run. Alicia just kept stressing the mission's importance, how much of a game-changer it could be for the resistance. When they reached the bottom of the mountain below the compound, Alicia paused. "Wait here a minute. I saw some herbs back there I'm running low on, I'm just going to go and grab them."

Ever-obedient, Diejo waited patiently. He was just about to go and check on her when the compound exploded, the fireball large enough to fill the valley.

With Alicia dead, Diejo no longer felt he had a place in Emerald Company. He fell in with Gold Company, first as a cryptographer and tactician, then as a soldier. He was eventually partnered with Yago Suerte, an infiltration specialist.  Yago was everything Diejo wasn't: brash, cocky, and reckless. Their relationship was immediately antagonistic, though the longer they worked together the more their relationship shifted from belligerent coworkers to brothers-in-arms, their bickering softened by camaraderie.

They were being held in an Eyrien dungeon when the Purge hit.  Diejo felt the Witchstorm coming, felt it rip through his Red and then his Opal before he lost consciousness. The shockwave killed their Eyrien captors, leaving Diejo and Yago locked in separate cells for twenty-five days before they were found. Twenty-five days of licking condensation off of the stone walls, twenty-five days of no food but rats and insects. Psychic communication was their lifeline, their thread of sanity, and both Princes clung desperately to each other. When they were brought back to the field hospital, the healers tried to take Yago away to treat his wounds. Diejo weakly threatened to kill anyone who separated them. An empty threat from a starved and Broken Prince, but the healers took pity and let him stay.

The end of the Eyrien occupation brought new challenges. Diejo had been a soldier for the better part of seven hundred years, and readjusting to civilian life felt impossible. He and Yago were too traumatized for city life, at first. Every noise made them jump, every footstep that of an Eyrien attacker. They took to the mountains of Sarque, moving from village to village, doing whatever was necessary to get by. Their relationship shifted again from brothers-in-arms to dysfunctional lovers. War wounds faded with time and gradually, Diejo found himself able to hold down jobs, if only for a short time.

They bounced around from town to town, city to city, until they ended up in the capitol. Diejo landed a low-level administrative job at his old university, slowly working his way up. Yago took to being a bit of a socialite, leaning on Diejo for financial support.

When the elections were announced, Diejo paid only casual attention– that is, until Andalusia Caro was named the Registrar of Voting and Candidacy. Diejo had long been a fan of her academic work: first as a university student, and then as a resistance cryptographer. He was immediately determined to meet Andalusia Caro and work under her. Diejo made a point of showing up at a few social events he knew she'd attend, dropping by her favorite cafe a few times, hanging around in the park near her office. Whether because she was actually impressed or because she wanted to keep a closer eye on him, Andalusia eventually offered him a position as her assistant. Diejo happily accepted.

Show Us What You've Got

Character in Play:

Wind whipped over the mountainside, biting at Diejo's exposed ears and nose. He couldn't risk the drop of Craft that would warm himself, couldn't risk detection.

Yago moved over the rooftop a few meters below, just a shape in the shadows as he crept over to the fortress's upper entrance. He lingered at the door, and Diejo reached out on the spear thread.

*The next guard rounds the corner in thirty-seven seconds. Thirty-six. Five. Four--*

He was cut off by Yago snapping at him to *shut the hell up and let me concentrate, then.*

Diejo rolled his eyes, tracking the Eyrien soldier on his patrol route, tasting his psychic scent. He wore the Yellow, his shields no match for the death spell that Diejo leveled, ready to drop the man where he stood.

*Nine seconds before I drop him, another twenty before this place is swarming. Five, four, three…*

Annoyance buzzed back at him, and just as the patrolling soldier rounded the corner, Yago slipped through the wall. Diejo let out a breath he didn't know he'd been holding, and ducked back behind the rock ledge that hid him from view. This was the worst part: the waiting game. Each of these missions was worse than the last, Diejo cooling his heels while Yago risked his hide to steal documents or assassinate higher-ups. It didn't matter that the plan only worked with Diejo in this role: every moment Yago was out of his eyesight made him more nervous.

The seconds dragged on into minutes, and Diejo pulsed a query along their psychic thread, a wordless blip of energy.

There was no reply.

One pulse meant everything was proceeding according to plan. Two pulses for "help," three for "abort." Nothing… was nothing. Nothing was very bad. Before Diejo took his next breath he'd formulated seventeen contingency plans, before the next he'd narrowed those down to the three best options. It all depended, of course, if Yago could be extracted–

*Stop panicking and look alive D, I've got the intel and I'm coming in hot. Got a couple bats on my tail and they're real pissed.*

*That makes this twice in a row you've tripped an alarm, Suerte. It appears this behavior is becoming a pattern.*

A smile certainly didn't tug at the corner of Diejo's mouth. It would be highly unprofessional to smile. It would be unprofessional of Diejo to secretly be a little pleased as his throwing knives buried themselves in Eyrien foreheads, to feel a chill of excitement as he threw himself down the mountain after Yago, to revel in the adrenaline surge as he flung his arm around Yago's waist and caught a Red Wind.

And Diejo was ever the professional.
