Spoiler:  Detailed Description (click to show/hide)
Personality

Personality:
Cormac has strong, sensitive hands, a soothing voice, and great patience. He has mastered a reassuring manner. He is even tempered ... for a Dark Jeweled Falkirk.

While he usually keeps his thoughts to himself, preferring listening to talking, he still has a sharp mind and strong opinions. Since acquiring his Sapphire, he finds it easier to leash his tongue altogether than to carefully edit his speech.

Part of his skill with horses is his ability to read non-verbal cues, which translates into an ability to 'take the temperature of the room' without using Craft, making him invaluable in both trade negotiations and navigating a danger strewn Court.

Cormac can always be counted on to smooth over social awkwardness, and to be gentle with those who are shy or unsure.

He is responsible for the training of the Clan's horses, from war horses to the tough mountain ponies. His brother Donncuan is Stable Master for the Clan Laird, in charge of gentle riding horses, children's mounts, and plow animals. The two have a bitter rivalry.

Working with horses, Cormac learned to never pit himself against another's strength, but to outwit and outthink his opponents. Right now, he is apprenticing to Yseult's Court Steward. When Aonghus follows Ryanne to found her own Court, Cormac plans take over as Steward for Yseult's Court.

Bonding:
When dangerous political intrigue and tricky diplomacy threaten to damage his Queen, Cormac will have answers. When she is so frightened she cannot speak, or so angry she is a threat to all of Scelt, he will have the skills to calm her. He can be counted on to gentle a Queen in much the same way he soothes wild horses.

Likes:
  • 1 Horses. Cormac loves horses. One of the few things that will bring on a rage is the deliberate abuse of horses. He admires their great trust and willing nature. He looks for intelligence primarily, over temperament, looks or gate. Training one proves to himself that he has mastered his own feral nature.
  • 2 Command Cormac likes to mark out his territory and claim it. He expects to be in charge of any group to which he is assigned, and is both charming enough and smart enough that he usually manages it without ruffling feathers. He expects those under his command to be loyal, and punctual. If they have those two traits, all else can be added to them. He feels that he mastered his moment when only 10. Even then, he had the strength of character to make the hard call, to make certain the deaths of his own people meant something.
  • 3 Good Stewards He believes that much of Scelt's unrest is because of the poor management of details. If every village and town had a good wall, a solid economy and a foundation for education, the men and women of Scelt would be less desperate, less prone to violence for no reason.

    Dislikes:
  • 1 Sloppy generals. He blames the Sheane disaster not on Queen Loreniel, but on sloppy generalship, pure and simple. Good generals study tactics, strategy and logistics, and Princes usually love to study. They like to be experts. Warlords are good too, almost always studying at least two of the three disciplines. Warlord-Princes usually make terrible generals. They tend to act on impulse and gut, rarely mastering even tactics (maneuvering in the presence of your enemies). Sometimes, they will gain a passing acquaintance with Strategy (maneuvering out of sight of your enemies), but convincing them that things like an escape route, and contingency planning, are part of their job is very hard.
  • 2 Archers. Ever since his first encounter with the Red Archer, Cormac has an aversion to bows. He hates and fears that man, with the unfortunate side-effect of disliking all archers. He won't give you a speech about honor, or facing your foes like Raild will. He simply admits it: Archers scare him. There is no warning, and no one can be shielded at all times. He's tried.
  • 3 Disrespect. Cormac is a nice guy. He is controlled, responsible, mature. Don't ever confuse this with safe. He is deadly, and capable of great viciousness; he simply won't be out-of-control when he kills you. He is fully capable of brutal retaliation. It will be well thought-out, precise, incredibly effective retaliation, instead of killing the nearest three people.

    Fears:
  • 1 The Red Archer. Ever since the attack on Falkirk Firth, Cormac is obsessed with the Red Archer. Before the rest of his Clan knew to fear him (a lesson painfully learned three years later in the attack on Falkirk Keep), Cormac suffered nightmares and flashbacks, not just of the fire, but of arrows that come out of nowhere, shattered Jewels and betrayed trust. His inability to escape the Red Archer haunts him. The man's scent lingers in Falkirk Firth, the Falkirk Temple, and even the Keep. The only road to peace and easing Cormac's fear is to find and kill him.
  • 2 The Landen Revolting. The Sheane Queen had a very poor track record of dealing with Landens, and maybe lowlanders don't care or don't need the Landen. But in the Highlands it takes every hand to keep the children fed and the wolves from the doors. If the Sheane were to provoke a large scale uprising, it would go poorly for the Falkirks.
  • 3 Arson. He has seen buildings burn too swiftly for even a Sapphire Jewel to stop; he has heard the screams of dying horses and men. If there is one tactic of both war and crime he despises, it is burning buildings. Most of the Falkirk humans are privileged to shelter in Cumach Falkirk's gift, the scattered great stone caves dotting the land, but their stock is usually less fortunate. The wooden outbuildings and stables are an invader's first target. Cormac has been in burning buildings, felt the scorch in his flesh and the smoke in his eyes. Being too warm in the evening, or even seeing a poorly tended fireplace can trigger nightmares. While the scars are mostly invisible now, he still traces the shape of where they used to be in his flesh, and some ridges yet remain along his rib cage, forearms, and back.

    Craft Strengths:
  • 1 Combat Shielding. Riding horses he loves into battle has led Cormac to master shielding others. He can throw a shield up over an area, several horses or a whole passel of people. He pays particular attention to the legs, stomach and throat whether he is shielding a person or an animal. He has on occasion used Shields to block fire arrows from barns and other flammable buildings. That is the reason that he admits too, anyway. The truth is darker and far less noble. Cormac is afraid of arrows, and works diligently to perfect his shield work. Someday, he intends to kill the Red Archer, and this skill will be essential to that moment.
  • 2 Empathic Craft. A combination of Craft skill and extensive work learning to read non-verbal cues. He is extraordinarily gifted at gauging the atmosphere of a place or persons. He is very, very observant, and good at finding the one piece that doesn't fit, the hidden viper in the grass. His family have urged him to give up the stables and study security, but he has so far resisted.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 Witchfire Ever since being caught in a burning barn as a young man, Cormac cannot summon Witchfire. His tactile and sensory memory of fire is so ingrained now, that if he summons it at all, it is as a raging firestorm centered on himself. He has no intention of ever attempting to summon it again, being fairly certain that his Offering strength would simply incinerate him.
  • 2 Stealth. While he learned Stealth a child, he cannot recall the last time he even tried to pass through an object, go invisible or disarm a ward. He can't stop and undo a ward at a gallop, or mask the scent and sounds of his animals. He has no dislike for such Craft, he simply has no call to do it.

    History:

    Spoiler: Timeline (click to show/hide)
Cormac was born in Falkirk Firth, with both of his parents present. He is Clan Steward Aonghus' oldest child, and his mother's second son.

Until the time of his Offering, he spent half of each year in Falkirk Firth (while their tiny dock was useable) and half in the Keep, gaining the education necessary to a nephew of the Clan Laird. His maternal brother Donnucan attended with him. There was always a subtle divide and not so subtle rivalry. They were trained to the same skill of animal handling and horsemanship, which strengthened the rivalry.

His mother is a skilled Hearth-Witch, responsible each year for cleaning, maintaining and managing the docks of Falkirk Firth.

Cormac's Birthright gifted him with a Purple-Dusk, the Darkest Jewel in his mother's side of the family. His mother was opposed to him removing to Falkirk Keep full time, and kept her little family together.

When Cormac was 10, his home Falkirk Firth, was brutally attacked. He saw a stranger, down by the docks the night before, but thought little of it. The man's odd gear and unusual bow, with sparking Red arrows, just made Cormac assume he was one more annoying mercenary. The man's Psychic scent was distinctive and powerful, still haunting Cormac to this day.

During the attack, he and his brother hid in a barn, see CIP.

His older brother was burnt, loosing a finger, and Cormac suffered severe burns to his back, bottom of his arms, and the edge of his rib cage. Cormac's mother had been on the docks, at the mercy of the raiders. They severed her left arm at the elbow, and attempted to remove her left leg as well, succeeding merely in crippling her for life. She stank of the Red Archer's psychic scent, who had threatened to come back and finish the job. This frightened Cormac deeply, as he believed he had killed the Red Archer.

After that, Cormac would not leave his mother unprotected, and for a brief time the two brothers were united in that goal. They nursed her back to health, neglected their own studies, and performed her responsibilities at Falkirk Firth to the best of their abilities. The Clan Laird never forgot their love and loyalty, and promised each one a position on the Clan Council or in Yseult's Court when they came of age.

The two boys wanted the same position  ... Master of Horse.

That ended their one and only accord. Both were trained for the position, apprenticing first with the Clan Stablemaster, and then with the Court Master of Horse.

Cormac was 13 when Falkirk Keep was attacked and the Clan Lord's Lady slain by the Red Archer. He was even old enough to be told that the Red Archer had been targeting children, increasing his fear of the man.

By the time of Cormac's Offering at 18, his mother was independent enough for him to leave home and train full time at Fallkirk Keep. Which was good, as the Sapphire gifted to him in his Offering was too dangerous for haphazard control. When he walked out of his Offering, surrounded by his kin, he felt the Red Archer's hand on his shoulder, and heard his voice, "Now you will know pain."

No one else heard or saw or even scented the man. His nearly hysterical response was not a great way to convince the Clan he was ready for the burden of a Sapphire.

While he was studying at Falkirk Keep, the old Clan Stablemaster succumbed to his wounds. The Clan Laird picked Cormac's older brother Donncuan for the position. Cormac and his brother quarreled over the appointment. This disappointment sparked a deeper focus and self-discipline in the younger man.

By the time Cormac was 20, he had attained the coveted position of Master of Horse. Since traditionally, the Stablemaster is promoted to that position, this blatant favoritism has fueled a bitter rivalry between the two brothers.

For five years, he has struggled to maintain an even temper, but the call of the Abyss is strong, and sometimes unsettling. He worries that he may have to give up his duties of training horses. But that is his lesser fear. He is determined to find and kill the Red Archer but a decade of investigations and correlating data have not yielded any information of note. Instead, he has to wait for the man to strike again.

He looks forward to a chance to compare his information with that of the Territory Master of the Guard.

Sweat and tears poured down his face, so intermingled he could not tell where one ended, and the other began. He had watched the archer with Craft-Enhanced Red arrows drive the leaders of Falkirk Firth down to the docks. He had wanted to run down there and save his mother, but she screamed at him to get the children inside. He watched as a Red arrow shattered her Shield and leg.

But then the Red Archer had taken aim at him, and he had fled into the barn with the other cowering children. It didn't save him. The Craft-Enhanced Arrow had exploded into vicious flames that instantly engulfed the barn.

Cormac clutched his flickering Purple-Dusk tightly in his hand, trying to block out the roaring fire, and the screams of the dying horses that were too far away for him to Shield. Four children crammed as close him as they could get, a chicken, two pups too young to fight, and the new foal sheltered between them. He poured his strength into holding the shield, but the flames ate away his shield faster than he could build it.

His brother's heat Shield had flickered and died ages ago, and little Mira's Tiger-Eye already lay shattered at his feet, where she sobbed uncontrollably. The air had grown thick, and hard to breathe, ever since the young Healer's birthright Jewel had shattered.

And Deirdre ... she didn't move at all.

He felt an emptiness, a searing pain that was in his soul, not his heart or his head, and he knew he had to choose.

Choose to die in the fire, still fighting, or choose to die sobbing.

It was a terrible thing, to have to choose your death so young, before you'd even lived.

He heard a strangled cry, amongst the sounds of battle, and focused on the flame shrouded form of the Red Archer, as he gutted the baker.

"Strike Fiercely!" Cormac screamed, the sound ripping dry flesh and sending speckles of blood into the air. He gathered his remaining strength and he brought the building down upon the enemy, upon his brother, the Broken Healer, the trusting puppy between his legs and the foal at his back.
