Personality

Personality:
Cassiel strives to be like the land she serves.  Steady and firm yet fertile and nurturing like the soil.  Peaceful yet a force like the rivers.  Soothing yet devastating as the wind.   Born the oldest daughter of the Chieftan and her husband, Cassiel grew up caring for her younger siblings, practicing for the day that she would care for their tribe.

Gifted in the art of Hearth Craft, Cassiel took to the Craft like bird to flight.  Forever at her mother's side, Cassiel was determined to be the kind of woman her mother was and the kind of Chieftan their tribe would need.   Even as a child, Cassiel displayed an incredible gift for soothing the tribe she called family and also had a knack for mixing herbs for healing brews and singing the songs of spiritual healing.  One of the few things that Cassiel regrets is that her duties pull her away from the things that need to be done around the house.

Like her mother before her, Cassiel has a very large, very loving family.  Along with her husband, Aikanos, Cassiel has stepped into the position of Chieftan, medicine woman, protector, and diplomat.   Despite being all of these things, Cassiel still tries to make time to cater to her Hearth Witch tendancies.  Though her duties often take away from Cassiel's ability to answer her Hearthy calling, Cassiel has accepted the help of her beloved husband and tries to find the time to still take care of her home.   The home that Cassiel shares with her husband and their brood of children is warm, homey, and always smells of some sort of baked goods.  While Cassiel is a Hearth Witch through and through, she has accepted the fact that her husband, Aikanos, has stepped in to fill in the roll of the one who would help maintain their home to keep the stress off of his beloved wife.

Cassiel has been known to till earth with the farmers, bake with the wise women, sit around the fire with the warriors, and hunt for venison with her husband all while carrying one of her infant children on her back.  Not one to shy away what needs to done, Cassiel will gladly get her hands dirty, take on any challenge, and go toe to toe with anyone that threatens the way of life she has been raised to protect and nurture.

Despite the strain of being Leader, Diplomat, Healer, and Caretaker, Cassiel has a very loving and balanced relationship with her husband.  Aikanos and Cassiel always have an open door policy in their home.  Anyone who needs a place to stay, a warm meal, or a helping hand know they can call upon the Lady Chieftan.

Likes:
  • 1- Herbs- Cassiel believes with all of her heart that the land, when loved and cared for, will provide and care for its people.  Herbs are one of the many ways that the land nurtures its people.
  • 2- Children- From a young age, Cassiel always had a love of young children.  Their blunt honesty, loving naivety, and undying affection are attributes Cassiel which that adults could keep.
  • 3- A Clean home- A Hearth Witch through and through, even with the responsibilities of being a Chieftan, Cassiel still loves the smell and look of a clean home.  A disorganized home leads to a stressful family life.  It's not uncommon to find Cassiel up late baking a pie or scrubbing the floor after completing her duties as Chieftan.
Dislikes:
  • 1- Disorganization- Cassiel's Hearth Witch instincts make the woman absolutely hate disorganization.  A clean and orderly home lead to happiness and healthy, productive children.
  • 2- Nomads- A strong family makes for strong people and a strong tribe.   People who have no base in a family surrounding lack the moral fiber needed to succeed in life.
  • 3- Outsiders- Even though Cassiel will never turn away someone seeking aid, anyone from outside her tribe needs to earn the trust of the Lady Chieftan.
Fears:
  • 1- Losing their way of life- Cassiel has known nothing but the tribal lifestyle.  While the outside worth progresses, Cassiel strives to keep their home life the way it has been for generations.
  • 2- Losing her husband- A weak person would be unable to admit they'd be lost without their partner.  Cassiel knows for a fact that if it wasn't for her husband, she would be lost and overwhelmed.
  • 3- Not having enough time for her craft- Even though Cassiel loves being the Chieftan, the lack of time to practice her hearth craft is devastating.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1- Hearth Craft- Cassiel was born and raised to love and practice her craft.  Though she's a touch rusty, Cassiel still instinctively flexes her Hearth craft without much effort.
  • 2- Protective Shields- One of the things that her mother taught Cassiel was the art of protection spells, mainly shields.  As the Chieftan, Cassiel sees it as her personal responsibility to protect her people by any means necessary.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1- Offensive Spells- Cassiel would rather build a spell wall between her and her tribe and anyone attacking them.  It's not in Cassiel's nature to attack anyone.
  • 2- Seduction Spells- Cassiel has a loving husband who adores his lady Chieftan without the need of craft or spells.

History:

As the oldest daughter of the Chieftan, Cassiel was born into a world of responsibility and sacrifice.  Though her mother taught her the ways of Hearth Craft and to take pride in her Caste, Cassiel's mother also taught her oldest daughter that her craft and desires may take a back seat to the needs of the tribe.  While watching her mother care for their people, their land, and their family, Cassiel couldn't help but notice that her mother was an expert at hiding her anguish.  A Hearth Witch feels the need to clean, bake, and care for her home.  But a Chieftan rarely has the time for such things.

Once Cassiel reached her birthright, the tribal match maker chose her husband.  Aikanos Soto was chosen to hopefully be Cassiel's husband, partner, and shoulder to lean on.  Luckily for Cassiel, it was easy to fall in love with her husband.  Aikanos saw Cassiel through her Virgin  Night just in time for Cassiel's mother to fall ill.  With very little time to prepare herself, Cassiel made the Offering to the Darkness, and arose with a Purple Dusk jewel and a new found appreciation for the connection to the land and to the Darkness.

Soon after the birth of her first child, Cassiel's mother passed away leaving the new wife and mother to take on the roll of Chieftan.  It was a long and painful process for Cassiel to adjust.  The tribe accepted the new Chieftan but Cassiel has always thought that they compare her deeds to the effortless deeds of her mother.  Soon after becoming Chieftan, Cassiel began relying on her husband to help raise the children and keep their home clean while Cassiel worked to keep their Tribe safe, happy, and healthy.

Though Cassiel's mother had declared Cassiel her heir, Cassiel found herself defending her right to lead their people.  Yes, the Hearth Witch was young.  Yes, Cassiel was already struggling with her own, personal problems but that wasn't going to stop her from doing what her mother had set before her.

With the aid of her siblings, Cassiel took her mother's place, declaring herself Chieftan and Matriarch of their tribe.  It didn't take long for those who did not believe in Cassiel's strength to question whether or not the young woman could lead them forward or if the death of their Lady would be the end of their tribe.

Cassiel was her mother's child.  Refusing to accept any form of insolence, the Lady Chieftain made her first declaration as tribal leader.  The people of their tribe could accept her and allow her the chance to prove that their trust was well placed, or they could leave.

What Cassiel did not expect was that the resistance would come from her own brother.  Perhaps Torvalt had hoped that if the tribe denied Cassiel the right to rule, he could take control.  Even though Cassiel loved her brother dearly and it pained her to do it, the Cheiftan had made a decree.  And the decree would be kept.  Within a week of Cassiel becoming Chieftan, she had to make a tough decision, let her brother undermine her or stand true to her word.  After a long discussion with her husband, Cassiel banished her brother and his family from the tribe instead of having him executed.

Despite Tribal law, Cassiel couldn't sentence her brother to death.  Doing so would strip his family of their father, husband, and protection.  Cassiel, instead, banished her brother for life.  Being banished from their Tribe and family was a far worse punishment in Cassiel's eyes.

Cassiel eventually got the hang of being Chieftan.  She could finally see how her mother effortlessly handled the strife of being the woman in charge while inner conflict and unanswered aspirations gnawed at her.  Though Cassiel's home is not nearly as neat or clean as she would like, Aikanos does what he can to see that his wife doesn't pull her hair out.  Several children later, Cassiel and Aikanos are inseparable.  If anything were to happen to her husband, Cassiel would be lost and probably never found.

The Soto Tribe
Connections and Alliances: The Soto Tribe pride themselves on their trading agreements with the other tribes.  Cassiel has encouraged her tribe to take pride in their talents and crafts.  As the lady Chieftain, Cassiel has shown her people her pride in their talents by keeping up the trade routes and markets to encourage self sustained wealth for her Tribe.

While the Tribe is interested in maintaining trade with the other tribes, Cassiel is not interested in getting involved with personal politics.  What disputes other tribes have with one and other, Cassiel isn't interested.  Any tribe that brings their troubles to her doorstep are met with the hostility of the Lady.  It is made clear with all new contracted trades that relations are to remain amicable and peaceful while in her territory or Cassiel will see that whoever threatens the peace of her Tribe will never trade with them again.

The Maboyas: Though she does not share with her people the troubles Cassiel sees in those who live outside their tribe, Cassiel keeps a close eye on what happens outside their boarders.  The tribe itself remains neutral in their thoughts on the Lady Queen.  Though the thought of Shalador being ran by a half Eryien is almost offensively unheard of.

Landens:  The Landen population is treated like any other Blood who enter the lands that belong to the Tribe.  As long as they follow the laws set forth by the Lady Chieftain, Landens are treated the same as Blood.  In recent years, Cassiel has lightened the requirements to join their tribe.  Both Landen and Blood are allowed to join them so long as they keep the peace and their way of life.

Eryiens and other races: Though they are proud Shaladorians, the Tribe has no external prejudices towards other races.  Though they are leery of those who are different and not one of them.  Even peaceful in nature, the Tribe is suspicious of outsiders and those who are different.

Torvalt Soto: Cassiel's exiled brother is a huge concern of the Tribe.  Upon his controversial exile, Torvalt seems to have abandoned the beliefs of the Tribe.  Torvalt has joined the underground movement attempting to expel the Eryien and Landen population from Shalador in the belief that the influence of outsiders has swayed his beloved sister to go against the traditions of old.

Upon Cassiel's order, Torvalt is now treated as a nomad.  His poisoned rational is to be ignored as that is not the belief of the Tribe.  Though Cassiel loves her brother, she has forbade the Tribe from communication with Torvalt.

Writing Sample:

Drums.  She'd dreamed of drums.  When Cassiel opened her eyes the drums faded into the delicate thuds of little feet on hard floors.  Even with the sun barely peeking over the horizon, life was already in full swing in the Soto home.

In an attempt to prolong the peace and attempt to organize her thoughts and push the dream from her sub-conscious, Cassiel rolled, curling into the protective warmth of her husband's body.  The love that Cassiel felt for her husband was just as strong this morning as it had been the day they had wed.  Seeing the strong lines of his face in the glow of the early morning brought a great deal of peace to Cassiel's heart.

Wrapped around her husband, Cassiel mentally noted where her children were based on the sounds of their voices and footfalls.  Try as they might, the Soto children were never quiet enough to escape their mother's hawk like attentions.  Maybe it was from having several siblings of her own, maybe it was just Cassiel's natural calling.  Either way, the sound of feet approaching the closed bedroom door was the signal that it was time for the day to start.

Closing her eyes and feigning sleep, Cassiel couldn't help but smirk as the door quietly opened and several warm bodies hit the foot of the mattress.  This was truly the life.  A loving husband, loving, adventurous children, and a tribe filled with people Cassiel would be honored to live and die with.

Cassiel opened one eye to see the round, glowing face of her youngest daughter.  Barely older than a toddler, the look of mischief was hard to mistake, even on such a young face.  “Yes, my love.  We're up.”
