Distinguishing Features:

Personality

Personality:
Basile is, at the heart of everything, a businessman. Everything in life, material or not, is a transaction. He’s always been able to spot the give and take of everyday life between others since he was a child so now it’s all second nature to him. But to get an idea of the real Basile, you have to ask others what they think of him, and even those responses only scratch the surface of this man’s mysterious personality.

Other men will say he’s a fine negotiator, a man of integrity and inner strength. Someone they would trust doing business with, someone they silently look to lead. It’s true that Basile speaks softly and carries a big stick. Men respect that about him. They know he isn’t prone to violent outbursts or impetuous moments. They’ll say that everything Basile does is with class and patience. Oh, they’ll recognize the predator behind those actions, but so long as that predator isn’t hunting them, they won’t say a word.

Woman will say that Basile is absolutely charming, a classic gentleman. Spared no expense when it came to courting them or just conversing with them. Most women lap his attention up without thought. The perceptive or intelligent will get a distrusting feeling about him; they can see it’s all a facade Basile uses to get what he wants. Witty banter, intelligent debate -- Basile will cross intellectual swords with a woman but he truly never sees them as a worthy opponent. He sees all women as things so easily conquered because they are ruled by their emotions.

His children...ah, there’s where the real Basile comes out. His children know him as stern and uncaring, quick to dish out reprimands, slow to give praise. He expects his children to succeed and doesn’t coddle them. Tough love, he says. Emotionally abusive might be a better term. It’s hard to tell. When his children were young, he whipped them when they did something wrong. Now that they’re older, he’s traded a physical whip for a whip of the tongue. His children probably hate him but Basile believes that one day they’ll thank him for being so hard handed because they’ll have succeeded in a tough world.

Likes:
  • 1 - Fine things. Linens, art, china, gardens. Basile is a man of luxury. This is partially why he’s an art dealer, so that he can have access to a lot of these things. But in truth, it’s because he’s materialistic and greedy.
  • 2 - The praise of his peers. Basile is a man who appreciates a good ego stroking on a regular basis. It helps him feel as though he’s doing things right, even if others disagree, because he thinks he’s an admirable person. This is the easiest way to get Basile to like anyone but he can also tell when it’s overdone or insincere.
  • 3 - Birds. From songbirds to raptors, Basile is a connoisseur of these creatures. His home is decorated with original paintings done by famous artists of birds.
Dislikes:
  • 1 - Sick people. Basile is a bit of a germaphobe. He isn’t so bad as to not shake hands with someone, but if someone is coughing or sneezing near him, he will quickly send them away. He avoids hospitals and other places were sick people gather.
  • 2 - Women in positions of authority. Any time a woman gets into something like this, they remind him of his little sister: bossy, vexatious, demanding. Basile is hugely condescending and judgemental about women leaders.
  • 3 - Black Widows. While Basile is a man of indulgences, he shudders to think about women given over so much to poisons and lust. One step above animals, he thinks, though they have their uses in scrying the future.
Fears:
  • 1 - Having his mind shattered. Basile is a man of thinking. Constantly thinking. Not all of it is about how he can screw over others but the idea of losing his mental faculties, being reduced to some driveling husk...that’s the stuff of his nightmares. This fear developed from volatile interactions with his son growing up, who would often lash out psychically as well as physically.
  • 2 - His son Jean-Baptiste. Not only did Basile somehow sire a Dark Jeweled child, he sired one of the monster caste of Warlord Prince. From the moment Jean Baptiste was born until even now, Basile fears his son losing control and destroying them all. He thought he could tame his son by breaking him but now he realizes that he used the wrong methods to ensure their safety.
  • 3 - The Queens taking away his wealth. A woman in charge is fickle, mercurial. Men are far more level headed and stable. If the Queens get back in power, they stand to take away everything Basile has worked so hard to attain. He will be left with nothing, less than nothing.
Craft Strengths:
  • 1 - Emotional projection. Of course, a businessman would want this skill on his side. Basile’s proficiency with this sort of Craft can be mostly found in the way he speaks: he combines his already honeyed words with it to act as a persuasive lure into that gets others to agree with him.
  • 2 - Vanishing and conjuring. It’s all in the hand. Now you see it, now you don’t. Basile uses this Craft with a bit of sparkling flourish, attracting attention where he wants it like a magician does with his audience. And then, with a wave of his hand again, it’s all gone.
Craft Weaknesses:
  • 1 - Telekinesis. Weak in this Craft, Basile hides it by casting judgment on those that rely upon it. You’ve got two perfectly good arms and legs; get up and use them.
  • 2 - Witchfire. Basile’s weakness in this Craft comes because he only ever uses it to light a cigar, so his witchfire is always brief and flickering. Sustaining it for any longer than that would take practice and Basile doesn’t have time for mundane things like that.

History:
Though he had a sister born after him, Basile always felt like he was the youngest child in the family.Perhaps because his sister was so bossy. Still is, he’ll say. They never got along. Basile preferred to spend his time with his father and brothers, learning the family business at first and then learning how to do more business than just that. They were a family of craftsmen, so Basile started out working a lot with his hands but switched to working more with his mind as he grew. He learned the subtle art of manipulation, justifying his methods by the gains they brought. His father should have watched young Basile more closely to teach him how to be a more honorable sort of man, but craftiness and guile were rewarded with praise, and so Basile began his way down the slippery slope of an oily businessman.

He learned how to deal with Jeweled Blood from his father, by watching his father’s reaction to that vexatious sister of his getting a Purple Dusk Birthright. Fights between the two were common, and Basile always blamed his sister for doing more than just disrupting the supposed harmony of the household. It was a deep-seated resentment that carried into his own parenting style, when his firstborn son became the very thing Basile had come to hate: Dark Jeweled.

But before that happened, Basile had what he considered a good run of success: starting his own businesses, courting and marrying a pretty woman who proved her breeding worth, rising higher in the social hierarchy of Chaillot, etc. Terribly successful, he thought of himself, even if it came at a cost. He was constantly working, hardly ever home. He justified it by saying he was providing a great life for his growing family and considered those late nights of rubbing elbows with the affluent in Chaillot as his personal reward.

His wife wanted more children because that was the only fulfillment she got out of a life where her husband was barely in it, but Basile denied her even that, stopping them at five children. She was no broodmare, he’d say, but in reality, children were expensive and a pain to raise. They were an investment that took very long to yield positive returns. Basile was out to build a decent-sized empire in Chaillot -- nothing grandly ambitious, no, just a nicely lined nest of wealth for himself.

And there was another point he would not admit to anyone about why he wanted no more children: he was afraid of his firstborn, the Dark Jeweled Warlord Prince Jean-Baptiste. He wanted no more chances, no more risks to his reputation. His fear of his son grew as the years passed. In all honesty, Jean-Baptiste’s “instability” was as much his father’s fault as it was the society that crafted and twisted him into a monster. Inexperienced with handling both a Dark Jewel and a Warlord Prince, Basile eventually turned to the only option he saw.

He had his son collared and chained away in the Dark Haven.

With the problem of his son now belonging to someone else, Basile focused his efforts on keeping his wealth safe. Slick and suave, he won over other businessmen to Roux’s cause in keeping the Queens out of command, easily able to bring forward facts and twist them against public perception of events. He was a snake in a business suit, but charming at that. He made sure not to speak too ill or disparagingly -- no, he just guided people towards the conclusion that they already wanted to make but just needed permission to make it. He believed that the Territory would go to Hell in a handbasket if the Queens had their way again. A lot of men did. And the ones on the fence just needed to be persuaded to come down on the right side.

So now, besides selling fine art and playing with his grandchildren, Basile spreads a quiet poison throughout Chaillot that the Queens are unfit and cursed, just like the Dark Jeweled they keep locked away.

“Don’t do this! Don’t do this!”

The pleas fell on deaf ears. Turning his back to his eldest and volatile son, Basile slid his hands into finely made leather gloves before giving his attention to the attendant standing nearby. “I expect monthly reports about his general well-being but nothing more. Am I clear?” It was obvious that Basile had no hopes for his son ever being released back into society and was only making the pretense of caring. The attendant nodded and Basile took his leave, his cane adding a light tapping beat to his stately departure.

It was for the best, he told himself, that Jean-Baptiste be here. The Darkness knew that Basile had tried his best to foster stability in his Dark Jeweled son. He had carefully whittled away at those violent tendencies that had haunted his son since birth but they were a cancer that insisted upon returning. And when Jean-Baptiste had first gone into Rut? Basile shuddered. Such animalistic instincts. A true sign of instability. No Blood in his right mind would do such a thing to another. The fact that it happened annually bothered Basile as well. His son was sick and needed help, help that the family was ill-prepared to offer. Basile was no longer willing to sacrifice his family’s safety, and, more importantly, his own reputation, because Jean-Baptiste was unable to control himself.

It was for the best, this place, even with its rumors of abuse and mistreatment.

As he walked, Basile mentally prepared eloquent statements explaining what had happened. His side of the story, of course, painting Jean-Baptiste in a violent, unstable light and shining a pure light of martyrdom and love on Basile and his family. They had tried everything. A shame it came to this but understandable, given what had happened. That poor, poor woman. Eventually, friends and colleagues would stop asking about it all, mostly out of embarrassment but Basile would take it. The name of Jean-Baptiste would fade from memory as Basile pushed forward and higher his other, more suitable children.

Eventually, Basile knew, there would come a day, a quiet order given to a trustworthy pair of ears to slip a blade along the cords of the neck or a poison into a final meal, where Jean-Baptiste would cease to exist at all.

It was for the best.
