Distinguishing Features:
Being identical twins, it is incredibly hard to tell Annina and Ofelia apart. They are each other’s mirror in looks, except for a swirling design tattooed around Annina’s left forearm and Ofelia’s right. However, one can easily distinguish one from the other by their psychic scent; Annina’s being that of a Queen and Ofelia’s that of a Priestess.

Personality

Kind, Shy, Soft-spoken, Romantic, Free spirit, Stubborn, Empathic, Loyal

Personality:

Most people would describe Annina as timid and quiet, perhaps even biddable. Those people do not know what lies beneath the surface of soft compliance. Beneath her shy and quiet nature beats the heart of an idealist, a romantic...and a Queen. Wearing the lightest of the jewels, Nina is not able to rely on her strength in craft to get anything done so she has had to develop other means to get what she wants. She has had to develop near endless patience, using subtlety and empathy to influence the people around her. This, of course, takes a lot more time than allowing jewel strength to determine the outcome of a conflict, but Nina is incredibly stubborn and she is loath to veer from a course once she has set her mind to it.

The need to develop this kind of influence over people does not come from a desire to have power over anyone else, but her constant fight for freedom to be her own person. It is a means of survival in a world where lighter jewelled blood need to tread with extreme caution if they want to retain some semblance of autonomy at all.

This may sound like she is incredibly selfish, when in fact she is not. Having grown up as a white jewelled Queen, a disappointment in so many ways to everyone around her, she has developed an astute sense of empathy for the people around her and especially for the lighter jewelled blood and their suffering under the Dark Religion. Being a soul that longs for freedom herself, Nina would love nothing more than seeing her fellow light jewelled blood freed from the bonds of oppression and the leashes of the controlling collars and rings.

Nina is an idealist and a romantic and she longs for a world where it doesn’t matter what kind of jewels you wear, instead your measure will be taken from how you treat others around you. Kindness begets respect and it, in turn, breeds loyalty. What jewel a person wears should not have anything to do with that. It is something she would like to change, but she is smart enough to realise that she doesn’t have the jewel strength to cause a radical change and upheaval on her own. So instead she has chosen to take another path, a path of empathy and kindness in the hope that she might be able to sway minds that way.

Her being a romantic is not just in regards to her dreams of a free and equal world. She is also a romantic in the true sense of the word. She harbors a passionate dream of finding the kind of true love that will sweep her off her feet and last for a lifetime. It is one of the reasons she has tried to delay her Virgin Night. She believes that her first time should be with someone special, someone who loves her and who she can trust to see her through it safely. The people around her, namely her family, are a bit more practical in their approach and have dismissed her notions as foolish and dangerous. There is nothing romantic about the ceremony and it should be done by someone experienced and trusted enough that she will rise from the bed intact. Nina is vehemently opposed to that cold view of things and have tried her very best to keep the decision from being made on her behalf.

Likes:
  • Romance novels - Nina is an avid reader, but her favourite kind of novels are romance novels. Not necessarily the smutty kind, but the kind where love always triumphs over anything and can heal any emotional trauma. She loves to escape into these fictional stories for hours and hours at a time, as it is a way for her to protect herself against the harsh reality that she’s facing outside of the realm of stories.
  • Gardening - Not all Queens like to get their hands dirty by digging around in the soil. Nina, however, is not one of those Queens. Wearing the white as her birthright, it has been drilled into her that she will never be good for anything but breeding and that she will most likely never have her own court to rule. Spending time in the garden, caring for all growing things and feeling the land via such a physical connection is one of the few times where she can feel like a proper Queen. It gives her pleasure and joy to care for the earth and tend to her gardens; it is her own domain, the only territory she will ever rule and it is precious to her.
  • The outdoors - Connected with her love of gardening, is her love of being outdoors. Nina may be timid and shy in public, but beneath that facade beats a heart that yearns for freedom. She loves her homeland with its harsh winters and stark landscape and being outdoors, truly outdoors in the wilds (hiking and camping) makes her feel alive and awake in a way that being confined inside a house or a city never will.

    Dislikes:
  • Confinement - Nina doesn’t mind being cooped up indoors with a good book, but being confined against her will, that is an entirely different story. Ever since her life changed after her birthright ceremony she has lived at the whim of others; her parents, the darker jewelled blood in Glacia...even her brother at times. As a soul that longs for freedom, having restrictions and confinement forced upon her is stifling and she hates it. The collar around her neck is just another sign that she is no longer her own person, that she is being held on a leash and is confined within the boundaries of that leash.
  • Gatherings - As an introvert, Nina prefers the company of books over people most of the time, the exception being her twin sister, her brother and Kaisa. Her preference for solitude is something that has been, and still is, frowned upon and has also been yet another source of disappointment for her parents. Queens are supposed to be strong and imposing, with magnetic personalities that can keep an entire room focused on nothing but them. Nina, being shy and soft spoken, does not live up to those expectations. Because of this she has always hated gatherings of any kind, be it family gatherings, large parties or religious celebrations. People will just look down on her constantly and keep reminding her what a failure she is, both as a Queen and as a daughter.
  • The Dark Religion - Having grown up in a deeply religious household, Nina does revere Mother Night and the Darkness. However, she cannot forgive the Dark Religion for creating a chasm between parts of the family. Up until their birthright ceremony her sister and Nina had lived a happy and carefree life, but once they walked away wearing light jewels, religion dictated that they were now somehow lesser, tainted...and their parents treated them as such. What had been a bright and loving childhood turned into a place of coldness and despair.

    Fears:
  • Serving as a Queen - Being a light jewelled Queen in a territory that considers light jewels inferior to anyone else is a struggle. Nina fears that she will never be able to serve her people in her capacity as Queen in a proper way. She may fight against a lot of the Dark Religion’s tenets, but the fact that she is still considered lesser and somehow impure is still something that weighs heavily on her. How can such a deeply flawed vessel ever be able to rule in a proper manner? How can she ever be considered a strong Queen?
  • Losing her siblings - The Dark Religion has created a rift between herself and her parents. They betrayed her and her sister, but thankfully their brother did not follow their parents' example and they still have him on their side. Nina is intensely loyal towards her siblings. She adores her twin and idolizes her big brother and she would do anything for them. But considering the state of the territory and the persecution of the light jewelled blood, she fears that a day may come when she is forced to part with her siblings for whatever reason. That the Dark Religion will drive a wedge between her and her brother, or tear her apart from her twin. They are her safe haven, the ones she can always turn to. If they are gone, what will happen to her?
  • Darker jewelled blood - Darker jewelled blood are scary. They may consider themselves guardians and caretakers of the lighter jewelled blood, but at the end of the day, they are the ones who are controlling her. They control every aspect of Nina’s life and they are also capable of tearing it apart in the blink of an eye, should they wish to. Nina fears the power of the darker jewels, both in regards to craft and in regards to the control they wield over her and any other light jewelled blood. How can they ever hope to break free from that kind of oppression?

    Craft Strengths:
  • Emotional Healing - Being empathic, Nina is very attuned to the emotions of those around her. Using her inherent empathetic skills to heal and soothe emotional scars comes naturally to her and it is something she has devoted a lot of time to studying. She would like the opportunity to use her gifts of emotional healing on a more regular basis, to offer her gifts to those in need.
  • Land Sense - Spending as much time as she can outdoors, Nina has developed a keen sense for the land. It is a skill that has developed naturally over time due to her interest in exploring the land around her. She has received no formal training in this craft, but she does have a natural affinity for knowing where to find shelter, caves and other such things, as well as good instincts in regards to knowing what the land needs and what it can yield. As this ability is still a bit rough around the edges, she would require proper training to develop it further.

    Craft Weaknesses:
  • Travel Craft - Nina is unable to use craft to travel. She cannot catch the winds at all, be it from fear or ineptitude. Travelling is, therefore, quite an annoying or time consuming endeavour for her since she either has to rely on others to carry her, go by coach or her own two feet.
  • Jewel Management - Managing the strength in her own jewel is still a mystery to Nina. She only wears the white, but she still manages to drain herself by expending way too much power doing the most menial and small tasks of craft. She requires careful supervision when using her jewels to do bigger tasks so that she does not go that one step too far and drain herself past the point of breaking.

    History:

Annina and her twin sister Ofelia were born into a warm and loving household. Adored by both their parents and their elder brother, their first few years were blissfully happy. A Queen and a Priestess in the family was a blessing from Mother Night, it had to be, and their parents had high hopes for their two young daughters.

Shortly after Sakari met Kaisa for the first time, Annina met Taavi, one of Kaisa’s brothers. The same age as Sakari, Taavi was a bit better prepared when it became clear that he was bonded to the young queen. Nina was six at the time and had no idea what the sudden feeling of “MINE!” meant, aside from the fact that she had just earned herself a new playmate. Shy and soft spoken she may be, but she can be bossy when she wants to be and she certainly managed to herd Taavi around in true Queenly fashion. Not that he had much say in the matter when the six year old he was suddenly bonded to made her will known. Sohvi and Vilhelm were both happy and disappointed at once in regards to this. Happy because they believed that their young daughter must be truly blessed to have a bonded male already, disappointed because that male wore a light jewel. But, despite that minor detail their hopes for the twins soared.

Their hopes were dashed on the day of the twins’ Birthright ceremony. Ofelia walked away with a yellow jewel and their Queen, their blessing from the Darkness, clutched a white jewel in her small fist. A -white- jewel, the most impure of all. Being devout followers of the Dark Religion, Sohvi and Vilhelm were devastated by this blow. They had thought the Darkness favoured them, but both their daughters had been tainted, were impure. It was a sad day for the Uljas household.

Sohvi and Vilhelm set their hopes to Sakari instead and the twins were put under a strict regimen of confession, prayers and lectures about all the ways they had failed in Mother Night’s eyes. Their Priestess mother was a hard taskmaster and relished guiding her two young daughters in the Dark Religion’s most sacred tenets. Annina, by nature of her caste, did not have to participate in the more intricate lessons, as those were reserved for her Priestess sister. Grateful for this very minor mercy, Annina would use that time to flee into the family’s garden and spend hours amongst the plants, trees and growing things, allowing the physical work to help drain her frustration and help find her calm again.

Annina also found solace from her mother’s preaching in the family library. There she scoured the shelves for books whose stories were ones of strife and loss, challenges to be overcome, but they all had one specific thing in common; they all had happy endings. Most of the stories were romances, where good triumphed over evil and true love lasted for a lifetime. It was a way for Nina to escape into a happier place, a happier world, for a time. Sometimes she would invite Taavi to join her and the two of them spent many afternoons curled up on a sofa in the library, reading together.

In another effort to escape the gilded cage their home had become, Annina spent a lot of time outside of the city limits, exploring the land by hiking or skiing. As she was not allowed to go that far outside of the city by herself, she dragged Sakari, and sometimes Ofelia, Kaisa and Taavi as well, with her. These small adventures, these moments of precious freedom together with her siblings and friends, were some of the happiest moments in Nina’s life.

When the twins were 19, Ofelia brought the idea of combining their craft and blood into a an inked design on their forearms. The design would allow the Uljas children to communicate across longer distances than they might otherwise have been able to. Annina and Ofelia managed to talk their brother into agreeing and on a day when their parents were gone for the day, they enacted their plan. Their experiment was a success, but they ended up paying a terrible price for it. Their parents were furious when they found out, and six months after the incident the twins were collared.

Annina hated the collar. If she had been shy and withdrawn before, she became even more so after having the slave mark around her neck. It had been made to look decorative, to soften the blow, but it still marked her for what she was; someone’s property and that did not sit well with the young Queen. Luckily for her and her sister it was Sakari that ended up with their controlling ring, but even if he never used it, and never has since, it still made Nina more wary of her brother from that day forward.

Shortly after that Nina was accepted as a ward at the Salo Province Court and travelled there together with Ofelia who had earned a place in the Queen’s third circle. It was with both dread and anticipation that Annina approached her new role, hoping to learn more about her Queen caste and craft, but also realising that she was in considerably more danger at court than she had been at home. But knowing that her brother is there at court and can protect her, helps assuage the young Queen’s fear. Another happy surprise was to encounter Kaisa again, whom she hadn’t seen since the day Sohvi and Vilhelm decided to collar the twins.

Just as she had not seen Kaisa, Annina has not seen Taavi since that day either. She misses him something fiercely, as his presence has always managed to bring her a sense of comfort and safety. Taavi was one of her most constant companions growing up and even if six months is nothing in the grand scheme of things, it has still felt like an eternity to Annina. Hopefully she will be able to see him again soon.

    Character in Play:

It had been a particularly bothersome day and all Nina wanted to do was to hide inside the library for a few hours. She sent a small prayer to the Darkness that her mother would leave her be at least until tonight. If she got a few hours to herself, she would dress up and play the dutiful daughter at the party tonight. No matter that is was supposed to be -her- party, or well, hers and Ofelia’s. Today was their fifteenth birthday. It shouldn’t be anything to celebrate, considering that both sisters were light jewelled, but her parents took any excuse they could to throw a party, much to Nina’s chagrin. But for now, it seemed as if the Darkness had heard her prayer and she would have a few undisturbed hours to herself. Selecting a book from the nearest shelf, Nina curled up on the sofa by the window. The pillows were thick and plush enough to almost swallow her slight frame, but it was just the way she liked it; cozy and comforting. She had just pulled a blanket over her legs when the door to the library opened and she heard a voice behind her.
    “Hello?”

She shifted in her seat and studied the young man at the door, a shy smile of welcome spreading across her lips.
“Taavi! How wonderful to see you!” She beckoned him over and as he walked towards her she felt it. It had been present ever since she first met him, but today it was stronger somehow. A fiercer connection that screamed “Mine!” inside her. She had always felt a bit possessive of Taavi, protective even, but today was the first time she had realised what that strange tug on her heart actually was. She stared at the young male, -her- male with wide eyes, not quite believing it.

“You’re mine…” her voice was barely above a whisper.
“I am, yes.” Taavi’s response came accompanied with a slightly lopsided smile. “It took you long enough to figure out.”
The normalcy of the teasing remark snapped Nina out of her awestruck state and she stuck her tongue out at him. With a chuckle Taavi sat down at the opposite end of the couch, snagging a piece of the blanket to cover his own legs.
“Do I have to observe protocol from now on?” Nina suddenly asked, worry radiating off her in waves.
“With me? Never. You didn’t when you were six, so I don’t see any reason as to why you’d need to now.” Taavi’s smile was sweet and slightly teasing and Nina breathed a sigh of relief. Just because she knew what he’d known since they first met didn’t mean that anything would have to change. He was still hers, just as he had been when she was six. He was still her Taavi.

Could I have Nina's jewel strength rolled for me, please? And perhaps her descent as well, even if she hasn't gone through with it yet? Thanks!
